Title: Happy New Year
Post by: Choop on January 01, 2009, 07:01:15 am
Welcome 2009, may you swiftly manage the cleanup left in the wake of 2008.

If you good folks have any resolutions, I wish you the best with them. My resolution is to not owe on my taxes agoddamnedgain. I'll need your prayers.

Yes, may all our wildest dreams come true!
It's 5:20 in the pm and I'm finally feeling good enough that I managed to keep down some noodles. I don't have any resolutions but I should probably make one about vodka.

May the New Year bring death to all your enemies.

Unless I am your enemy. Then, like, totally not that.

I have resolved to go to the gym more often, in a couple of weeks after it stops being crowded with people who've resolved to go to the gym more often.

I believe in two things, the placebo effect and the power of lowered expectations. So I am not going to shoot for wildest dreams, but here's to hoping that this year doesn't get a whole lot worse than it is starting out. Happy new year!

How is Rose  anyway?

Rose does not have a brain tumor, which is good. Apparently she has meningitis, although we are not sure what kind because of the holiday and not having the labwork back yet. She may already be on the right meds for that, or we might have to add another. Vet said 75% of dogs completely recover although he may have been exaggerrating since I presented as the kind of person who was positive her dog was about to die of a brain tumor.

She is doing fine, knock on wood, except for some little agitated episodes in the middle of the night - no full blown seizures. And except for scratching her shaved parts till they bled, so I had to go back to the vet for another medication for that.

I am doing worse than her, of course, because I have been sleeping terribly and also, dogs don't worry. Oh yeah, and dogs don't pay the vet bills. She had an MRI and a spinal tap. They gave us a disk with the MRI on it. so the Technical Staff felt he got a little more of his money's worth, getting to see the inside of the dog's head himself.

Yeah I can appreciate that would take the edge off. Good to hear she's alright though.

I was awakened at 3:30am by the fire alarm. Either it went off on its own or some drunken jerk set it off. Either way it was very loud inside and very cold outside.

Today I have to pack for my trip to New York. I leave too early tomorrow morning. I can't believe I'm finally going to see Spamalot and it's going to have this Clay Aiken jerkwad in it.

I saw Spamalot.  I was unimpressed.  I mean, the parts where they stuck to the original Monty Python was treasure.  When they deviated from that and went into Broadway musical mode it was... average.

The woman I've been seeing came home with a Clay Aiken CD.  I was like "we need to talk."

Happy New Year* touambers. This year this might actually mean something to me, as it looks like I'll FINALLY move from a dead-end job, working with something I HATE (computers) to a decent job that pays decently, with chances to make progress in ADULT LIFE, in an area that I love (languages).

* - "Happy New Year(tm)" might not be available depending on location.

You go DJ, dream the impossible something!
Languages are awesome, ADULT LIFE is also awesome but apparently rather elusive (if I'm to trust half the adults I know).

What is the job exactly?
Title: Re: Happy New Year
Post by: dejavroom on January 06, 2009, 01:42:52 pm
Basically I'll be in a huge room with other translator drones, each in his individual cubicle, translating the living shit out of the boringest technical documents & manuals imaginable (but hey, at least I'm not being called to fix paper jams anymore, so yay me). Of course it's not my dream job of translating literary material (which was the scaled-down version of my dream of writing for a living, which in itself was the scaled-down version of... anyway. It's a palpable possibility of a career, which I thought was lost after I kinda... never... finished college...

Hey, where would the world be without people who fix paper jams? But, good for you. If you can speak more than one language fluently, fuck college, you know?

As for the other thing, I always thought that literary translation was something that was done more on a freelance basis or as side projects to a day job - much like actual literary writing - anyway. So what's to stop you?

I read "fix paper jeans". That would have been a worse job.

Happy 2009 pereople.

For '09 I broke my damn ass-bone. Apparently I've gotten the worst out of the way already.

My mom broke her's off entirely and had to have it removed when she was in high school.

I am inclined to agree.

The morning after my New Year's celebration I discovered that I was almost completely out of gas, and I had to stop at a Circle K on my way home.  On a whim, I decided to go inside looking for Circus Peanuts, and somehow managed to come back out with a butterfly knife instead.  So now my New Year's resolution is to learn to do tricks with it, and not a) forget I even own it, or b) chop all my fingers off.

Well, I suppose they did issue me a weapon, but the cool hats have not been forthcoming.  Maybe I dithered around too much.

I would like to request that we establish a filter that turns "Circus Peanuts" to "Circus c*ck."

Thank you.
