Title: Wombat Watches the Super Bowl
Post by: pmcd9 on February 02, 2009, 01:21:53 am
Daaaam, The Boss has some slick moves.  I enjoyed that immensely.

What about that 100 yard run to end the half?  That was completely awesome.

Was that it? They're going to play more football already?

I assumed you'd be watching the Puppy Bowl, but you'd be wrong.

What you should be watching instead is the Predator Bowl on MSNBC.

I have a story to do with this. (start from HOWEVER if you are not interested in young British males and their reaction to American football)

Me and my flatmates were perplexed when the lovely Match of the Day showed some footage of today's Premier League action as per usual, only to return to the studio where Adrian Chiles sat adorned in full American football armour and Alan Hansen and Lee Dixon sat very awkwardly with pigskins in their hand.

"What is this?" we thought. I'd heard the BBC were beginning to show American football and presumed this was some sort of stunt to make us blokes chuckle and think "I'll give the Superbowl a watch, seeing as old Chilesy's dressed up and all! And in an extremely deadpan manner he's informing us they are cutting straight to the action!"

It worked.

Until they actually cut to the 'action' (after a very long-winded introduction including and implying Obama in all this malarkey). A brief check of the TV guide told us we'd be up 'til 3am watching this, and I briefly recalled the nature of the sport.

After recounting what I knew (lots of breaks, 'plays', the rules, two seperate teams, the overriding feeling this is just gay rugby) and our previous experience trying to watch baseball, we gave it a miss.

HOWEVER.

Their is obviously a concerted effort to make American football a more global, inclusive thing (probably that Obama again) and the BBC had even sent a commentary team. I will inform you of it's impact over here.

The most important thing is, and I'll let you guys field this:

A) Is it easy to play 'off-the-cuff'? As in, could I suddenly decide to get a game going, head down the park (a flat unmarked grass surface) with minimal preparation and get a game going?
B) Do you need equipment?
C) Do you need a certain amount of players?

I ask because one of the successes of rugby/football here is that it's very versatile. Football can be played with one/two goals (made of jumpers), literally any amount of players split and don't have to be equal teams, etc. and rugby is the same except it requires two 'ends'.

If you could do this with American football and it was promoted enough, kids would start playing and success would be yours in the battle for hearts and minds.

I think most pickup games around here end up being touch football, which you can just play on a soccer (sorry--football) field. I prefer soccer, but probably because I grew up playing it. Also because I'm not into a lot of pain.

''Oh MYGAWD I'm gonna, like, cut your MOUTH open and TOTALLY break your LEGS, you grody Southern BASTARD!"

With proper inflections such as emphasizing the last syllable of every word? As if everything's a question?

Totally cute.

Hmm! I can see that!

Yes.

I can see this happening.

See to it.

I watched it at the frat house where we used a projector to watch it on a wall. I thought it was a great game, I had money on arizona +7 points, so I won even with my team losing. God bless America.

I took some mushrooms with some friends and kind of watched it.  I was really happy when Arizona took the lead and then lost intrest so it was alright.

Judy, to answer your questions:

You can play bastardized versions of football.  I think most kids in the U.S. start playing football on recess in elementary school (1-5th or 6th grade, 5-11ish) probably at around 7-8 years old.  You would not have any of the offensive or defensive lines or running backs, but would be like 6 to 10 person sides with 1 quarterback and the rest receivers or defensive backs (the dudes who guard the receiver).  Maybe you would have 2-3 pass rushers who, instead of getting blocked, have to rush on like 5 mississippi or something (a count to about 5 seconds).

By this time kids who are into sports have probably played (in organized leagues) soccer around the ages of 4-5, then most stop, baseball from 5-6 to whenever they quit, and basketball starting at like 6 or 7 to whenever they quit.  Flag football starts around 8 and is pretty lame.  Then when you are about 12 you can start to join leagues and school teams that tackle.  I haven't played tackle football in years, but my last few years of high school we would have lots of pick up tackle games.  Again though, there would be no offensive lines, defensive lines or running backs.  You would get to hit the shit out of each other though, without pads, which is pretty fun.  I remember being really sore after these games and it would probably destroy me as an adult, but it is super fun if you can do it.  Lots of people also play like 2 on 2 or 3 on 3 games as adults in the park or something, and maybe in organized 8-11 person teams, mainly flag football (belts with flags that can be ripped of instead of getting tackled) but sometimes tackle.

Basically to sum it up:  you can play football without a shit load of organization, but it is kind of dangerous, probably more so as you age, and takes away what could be the three most important areas of the game (both lines and running backs).

And when did Doc become an emergency backup pug?

Several years ago I read some book that said the average football game actually last about 16 minutes if you only count the time that the ball is actually in play. How they stretch that out to 3 hours I'll never know.

And what happened with the running time last night? It used to be that they scheduled the "after show" for 10, but it didn't usually start until 10:15 or so. This year The Office wasn't even scheduled until 10:30 and it didn't start until like 10:45. The rules of the game didn't change, so where did that extra half hour of waiting come from?

Of course I'm still bitter because the last season of Futurama never actually aired on the east coast. With a 7pm start time it was always preempted by some boring game running long and a post-game show with a bunch of washed-up players nobody has heard of and Terry Bradshaw.

With all the crap going on in and around the Super Bowl (and other mega-events like the Oscars), it ALWAYS takes longer than the scheduled time.

The old cliche about football is that it combines two of the worst aspects of American culture:  violence and committee meetings.

I had absolutely no dog in this fight--plenty of reasons to root for or against either team, so who cares.  At least it was a good game.

My favorite commercial was the one where the two guys try to play frisbee with a yak.

I believe it was shortly after the phrase appeared on Wombatarama.  There was a thread somewhere (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,4773.msg128174.html#msg128174) that he heaped praise on the concept and his .sig switched from (natsukashii - sp?) to emergency backup pug that same day.

I was wrong - it was here.  The charming photo of her $2000 haircut was what I was thinking of initially.

The game was pretty good, though I still to this day do not really understand football.

Bruce Springsteen makes my flesh crawl and always has. Phony, has-been, schlockmeister.

The tone of the advertising this year was downright sociopathic. That said, the best moment of the day was seeing a koala getting punched in the face.

I thought perhaps some people would appreciate a link to this interactive Twitter map: http://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2009/02/02/sports/20090202_superbowl_twitter.html

The emoticon and "Go" filters are pretty funny to see. I would love to see a short video of game highlights mixed with the various twitters going on at that point. One step towards the colloquial "hive mind."

Super Furry Animal's tank is better than Bruce's various American sounding cars mentioned in his songs

Welsh is better than American

Songs in Welsh called Ysbeidiau Heulog are better than songs in English called Night

Songs about growing old and aiming to do something good with the rest of your life are better than songs about growing old and looking back at how good you used to be

Victory for Super Furry Animals.

Anyway

I'm not drunk because of sadness/girl troubles! I am drunk because I was out clubbing all night and I'd left my laptop on and decided to post something

The girl troubles have turned into girl good things

Also the Acid Casuals are awesome.
