The game's name is Retro Game Challenge. It is for the Nintendo DS. The premise is that you have been sent back in time to the mid-1980s and must meet specific challenges in 80s Nintendo games before you will be sent home.
The games are not real 80s games. Instead, they got Namco (creators of Pac-Man among many others) to make games they might have made in the 80s. The result is that you have a collection of games that feel like some of the better classic Nintendo games, without being direct copies.
This game is thirty dollars for a bunch of quite good old-style Nintendo games, plus they can go in your pocket. I highly recommend acquiring it, particularly because the company localizing it is using it as an experiment to see if there's enough appeal in old-school gaming to make a market of it.

There will always be a market for anything that fetishizes the past.

That is cute.

If I was sent back to the mid-80s I would probably stay. Go out to Vegas and bet massive sums on sporting events.

Which is why there is an endless stream of reprints of older games, yes.
However, this is something unusual: a set of new, high-quality games in genres that are no longer produced, compiled and released for a low price. I would definitely like to see more of this.

Speaking of classic NES games on the DS, does anyone have a card in the mode of the R4? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nintendo_DS_storage_devices
My card of choice is the Edge DS: http://www.edge-ds.cn/?lang=en
I had it for a few weeks before selling it to my cousin at cost (he wanted to give one as a gift and they're currently out of stock).
You can get an NES emulator for it and load every NES game (which, all told, are easily under a gig).
Really fun. But this game sounds fun (and legal) as well.
