Rather surprising guest appearance at the end, there. (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=07292009)

SPEAK IT GINSBURG!
Hmm. I have a feeling that Beef will acquit himself more admirably that Ray did.
-
Why does Roast Beef have five fingers but Cartilage Head have four? ONSTAD YOU ARE A HACK AND BEAT YOUR WIFE.
-
OMG IT'S CH. I was just looking at his strips a few days ago.
I really wasn't ready for that this week.
Yeah, I'll take it. Shit, dude.
-
Gasp!
-

The missing fingers are the least of his problems.
-
I got it on good authority that Death grabs its car keys off the table by the door for each of us the moment we are born. That's why I siphoned his gas. You're welcome.
-
Do I sense a classic "I have no idea how to resolve this story so I'm just gonna have it veer in a completely irrelevant direction" move going on? All helicopters with long legs style? I'm excited by this.
-
A man that can't stand to be seen with a Blackberry is a man that has my respect.
-
In 2001 I went to work for a wireless cellphone carrier. I was issued my first cellphone. I was embarrassed and thought I might be perceived as putting on airs.
"WHOAAA LOOK'IT ROCKER-FELLER HERE, TALKIN' ON HIS MO-BILE-PHONE! asshole."
In 2009, everyone has one. I'm still embarrassed by them.
-
I fought hard not to be leased to a pager for my first few years here. Now I note my cell-phone number is on the handy laminated card my admin issues to our work team.
-
I mean, cell phones... I get cell phones for certain people.
Between rolling around at the bottom rung of the entertainment industry drivin' around fetching things and now drivin' the old piss-and-blood van for a large combined portion of my life, I get it, there are lifestyles and occupations where you need that shit in your pocket for business and/or emergencies. Especially now that I spend about half my waking thought process on the white hot fear that my little brother had a seizure in a men's room in the last hour, cracked his head on a urinal and is dying in a puddle of urine, alone and scared in the face of The End... I get it. I get it. For pressing business and emergencies when you're mobile... full-on.
But holy fuck. If you need a GPS, get a GPS. If you need a digital camera, get a digital camera. If you need to send text messages and e-mails to people, wait until you get to your office computer or your home computer and send your little :)-faces out. If you need to play music, get a fuck*ng iPod! It's all very easy.
To be able to do all that from one incredibly expensive-to-use device in your pocket, why do you want yet another way for people to track you down and bother you about completely irrelevant shit? If what they had to say was so important that you needed to know it immediately, they wouldn't text you or e-mail you the information... they would CALL you.
ON YOUR CELL PHONE. All I need is yet another crutch for my already criminally divided attentions.
-
I don't even understand what you're saying there.
People should carry a camera and an ipod and a GPS separately, or else should have a device that does all of those but is not a phone, but really if someone wanted to get in contact with you they would use a phone.
I like talking to people. I like when people call me. This is the difference here. I like having my handy little iphone guy, and I like that people can call me on it, in addition to checking my mail. and playing Tower Defense games while waiting for classes, and listening to music, and looking up movie times, etc.
I can't really think of times when people have called me when I wanted to be alone (other than when I was sleeping, at which point I turn off my phone). Mostly times when I wished people would call me when I was alone. What is with this whole "aloneness" thing?
I was initially embarrassed by my iphone, and then realized there is >60 percent smartphone saturation at my school, and tried to get over it.
-
What I'm saying is that... man, in the old days, all the Big Scary science fiction was about the government forcing us to have cameras and microphones and tracking devices fuck*ng everywhere and MAYBE a few scrappy free-thinkers would be actively fighting it but everyone would, at least, secretly hate it but feel they had no way to act against it.
And now... everybody not only WANTS these things and NEEDS these things but they'll even sign a two-year committment to pay slightly less for the newest iteration of all these devices that tell everyone exactly where they are and exactly what they're doing at all times and... the coolest person is the one with the shiniest newest tracking-distraction device.
Why would anyone want MORE ways that people can bug them when they're in one of the few situations when they can't be directly bugged without actively carrying the tools to be bugged? Why would you want another tool whereby people can get totally offended if you don't immediately answer their piddle-shit requests about this or that, because they know that even when you're walking around a bookstore IF YOU VALUED YOUR FRIENDSHIP/VALUED YOUR JOB YOU WOULD CHECK YOUR E-MAIL EVERY TEN MINUTES?
Call me nuts but there's something sacred about having quiet time and alone time, even if its in a crowd. It's bad enough to completely divest yourself of your privacy ANYWHERE for the sake of allowing people to call you with their voice in the case of an emergency... that's bad enough but I get it. But why the fuck would you want people to be able to bug you anywhere with things that even THEY don't consider worth actually vocalizing to communicate in the breaking of your sacred solitude?
I can't say I get it.
-
Inev, you may not get it because people call you for pleasure, not business. If you've never gotten a phone call from someone who wants you to drop everything and do something for work instead of whatever interesting thing you are doing at the moment, yeah, you probably don't understand the attraction of being unreachable.
You know, I agree that people who seem to use their Blackberry to show how important they are are annoying, but I would get something with mobile internet access in a minute if I could justify the expense. Like when I am waiting on a long line or something like that, it just seems like the obvious thing to do is send email or check a messageboard. It's smaller than carrying a book everywhere. And it doesn't bother people around you like a cellphone conversation would. But I am not away from a computer for enough hours in a day to justify it.
I definitely wouldn't mind if it looked like a stock ticker, though. Or maybe one of those Star Trek communicators.
-
I like cool gadgets. I don't like being connected all the time.
It is the quandry of our times.
-
I went cell phone free for like 5 months a few years ago and it was so nice. But it was equally nice to get one again. The solution is to silence it or turn it off when you don't want to be contacted, and if it offends your needy friends, fuck 'em.
-
I have said this a thousand times, but why cant we just have a fuck*ng ipod plus phone, not all of this fancy stuff. I mean, the internet is cool, but about 3 times a year I wish I had it in situations I don't. That's not too many. On the other hand, a phone and ipod in one would be one less thing to carry, and besides cigarettes wallet keys and maybe drugs, that is all I carry.
-
I've been strongly in the "it's just a phone" camp for years but I'm breaking down and getting a MyTouch 3G next week. Partly because I'm about to start dating again and SMS has become a required part of the dating procedure and partly so I have access to Google maps on the go.
I very rarely need a real GPS, I'm more a "OK, if I see Hanover St then I've gone too far" kind of driver but I'm driving into DC a lot more often than I used to and having maps handy makes this much easier when you invariably miss your turn or discover it's one-way during rush hour.
I won't use a phone for music until it has at minimum a 32GB capacity and a battery that can play music for 8 straight hours and still make phone calls.
-
SMS has become a required part of the dating procedure
WTF?
-

Yeah, it's got that.
-
WTF?
I don't like it any more than you do. But if I'm going to have to start texting I want to be doing it with qwerty.
[Huh. Firefox's spell check recognizes qwerty but not texting]
-
keith, as far as i know you don't have to sign up for the internet data plan when you get a smartphone
but look, andy rooneys of this forum, you don't *have* to leave your phone on all the time. you don't *have* to carry 8 digital devices that each do something different. you don't *have* to use the capabilities that come in a phone. you don't even *have* to buy the thing so why the *fuck* are you complaining.
-

This. Sometimes I get an exasperated message from my mom saying, "Why is your phone always off??!!"

This is why I've been carrying a Razr. I basically just makes calls. But now I feel like smarthphones are finally reaching that nice intersection between non-ridiculous prices and usability.
This. Sometimes I get an exasperated message from my mom saying, "Why is your phone always off??!!"
My mom goes to the opposite extreme. She only turns her phone on to make a call then immediately turns it off. She does this even if she leaves a message saying to call her back. And she's never set up her voicemail despite the fact that she's had the same number since 1998.
-
This. Sometimes I get an exasperated message from my mom saying, "Why is your phone always off??!!"
Moms are different. But this is a problem with Moms regardless of whether you own a cell phone. They always will think you are not in contact enough.
-
I would get an iphone (or something comparable) in a minute if I could afford it. As soon as I can I will.
-
why the *fuck* are you complaining.
Recreation.

True. Everywhere people are signing up and paying for the opportunity to be controlled - not just with phones. What happened?
I was sitting there thinking about the ticker and the font
Me too - what font is that?
-
True. Everywhere people are signing up and paying for the opportunity to be controlled - not just with phones. What happened?
With phones I would suggest that the enhanced communication and organization tools these gadgets provide allow one to take greater control over one's life. Or at least they provide the illusion of greater control.
-
I guess that I just don't see more freedom or control in being beholden to more people, more of the time, with every new device.
-
i think our difference here is in seeing oneself beholden to one's friends. if you and the cadre of people with whom you associate see yourselves as beholden to each other, that's a dynamic with issues. i see myself as loyal to my friends, and i enjoy their company, so it's a pleasure both to receive and to initiate contact with them.
anyway you can have a phone that only makes calls and never receives them: turn off the ringer and don't pay for voicemail. and you don't have to have a camera in your phone. and you don't have to send or receive texts. and you can have a separate machine to listen to music with. i just don't see why you're pissing on my phone when it's easier and cheaper for you to have what you actually want. nobody's holding a gun to your head and demanding you to buy an iphone are they? if they are, then brother, you got a screenplay in the works.
-

-

You have a point, no guns are involved, but there is a sort of soft coercion.
Consider cars: on the surface they increase the individual's freedom: he can travel long distances independently whenever he likes. But what are the costs? To own a car you need - besides participation in the money economy - insurance, registration, license, and...a job. The job you need will cost you more things: your time, your energy, possibly your dignity. It will very likely also require you to drive your car even when you don't want to, and prevent you from travelling, or force you to travel, those long distances against your will. The insurance etc. involves giving loads of personal information to various governmental and commerical bodies, not to mention more time spent dealing with them. Furthermore, cars require a network of flat roads, a system of fuel production and distribution, a repair and support infrastructure, and so on, all of which demand more money, more time, more disciplining of populations....now where has the freedom got to?
It's not enough to say "Well I feel free buddy, you're just uptight." That's precisely the kind of winner-takes-all mentality that led to this situation in the first place.
Many Africans live and think collectively and rely upon sharing rather than individualistic success or achievement. In many villages in remote areas of Africa, one finds people that are generally cheerful, content, and live on a day-to-day basis without much anxiety or stress. An average Westerner's fear of even the possibility of unemployment or reduction in standard of living can be a cause of depression and much anxiety. - Shaykh Fadhlalla Haeri
It is that fear of suddenly finding oneself on the bottom of the pile, down there with "them", the unwashed unemployables, that is the gun at people's heads.
And yes I know it's possible to live off the grid.
-
just shut the fuck up and go away, you. i don't think smets has any concern if he ends up with "them" regardless who "them" might be.
-
Wow, this thread kind of soured my mood. I liked the comic. It's all tense and such, and sassy Roast Beef is one of my favorite Roast Beefs.
I have a cellphone. Most of my friends don't even have land lines any more. A good 60-70% of the people I interact with daily have smartphones. My phone is dying and I think I'll probably get one with a keyboard on it because I'm finding text messages to be convenient and less intrusive than a full voice conversation in public. I've had every type of conversation on a cellphone, from "It's 3 AM and you need to come in to work" to "Hey, you want to come have a delicious burger?" to "The person you wanted to spend the rest of your life with is dead, sorry." I don't think the good would have been better on a land line, and the bad could definitely have been worse. I don't think technology is the problem, here.
So, uh, yeah.
-
I find myself very polarized when it comes on phones. On one hand, I like to take long bike rides in rural areas, and having a GPS with me all the time would relieve me of my reliance on paper maps. On the other hand, I like having a phone that I don't feel bad about abusing and shoving in my pockets along with car keys, loose change and maybe a rock or two.
I feel like I will either get an iPhone or that Motorolla F3 phone that is like $30, indestructable, and has insane battery life
-

Do you not like to be disagreed with? You might find a gun a useful accessory. Fits against heads.

Speaking of cell phones, I would like to stop having this experience where I call the Technical Staff on his cell phone, and he doesn't pick up, and when he finally picks up after I have tried another half a dozen times and I ask why he didn't pick up, he says that the phone didn't ring. This is after replacing his phone with one that we tested in the store to make sure he could hear the ring when it was in his pocket.
I know what you're thinking, but I don't think he's that good a liar. Also, there's the other 75% of the time that I call and he has the phone turned off, so if he really didn't want to answer he just wouldn't have it on.
-
What carrier do you have? Friends of mine have T-Mobile and I can never reach them in certain areas because the coverage is so spotty. This is assuming of course that the problem is technical in nature, and not that he just doesn't hear the phone. If that is the problem, is there a way to set the phone to both ring and vibrate? That is what I have mine set to do.
-
We have Verizon. I think the calls are reaching him - it rings a long time instead of going straight to voicemail. I don't know if the phone can ring and vibrate at the same time. I'll have to check. Which I can't right now because he has gone somewhere that really doesn't have reception.
I'm not sure anything's going to help short of a phone that jumps up and grabs him by the throat, though.

In a world where everyone is required to own an iphone...
Canned, Canned, a thousand times Canned.

Canned, Canned, a thousand times Canned.
if only there were a country wherein one could enjoy freedom fries, but not have to put up with e-phones......

The only things I use my cellphone for is making/receiving calls and playing Clarence Carter's "Strokin' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P7gMkiOPSeA&feature=PlayList&p=EDAAF0E2309F91B2&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=66)" at critical moments.

One of my favourite gags in a tv show is when a character's phone will play the shows theme song, Boston Legal did this a bunch and I never got sick of it. To this end I need to work out what my theme song is so I can provide my viewers with the same enjoyment.
-
I have been trying to do a gag where my phone plays the Keyboard Cat song, but so far it isn't working out.
-
I looked that up and apparently keyboard cat is dead. :'(
E: How is the song not working?
-
My ring tones:
- For my wife: the electric piano lull, then the big splash from American Analog Set's "Come Home Baby Julie Come Home." My wife is not named Julie, it just seemed like a good ring tone.
- For work-related callers: the "Powerhouse" theme from old Warner Brothers cartoons.
- For non-work/friend type people: the opening of the Hold Steady's "Stuck Between Stations."
- For unknown callers: Mantronix, "Who Is It." (see what I did there? I'm so fuck*ng clever I can't stand it!)

I have one Hold Steady song (Chips Ahoy) and I like it, but it sort of bugs me because the singer sounds exactly like the dude from Sugar High in Empire Records. So every time that song comes on I have a big high school flashback when we all loved that movie.
-
I used to have a recording of my dog barking as my ringtone. But then Verizon disabled the ability to do that kind of thing and I can't convince the Technical Staff that that is a valid reason to change providers.
-
I really dislike the Hold Steady.
nDed: it's not working in the way where, Apple won't let me use just any old file as a ringtone.
I heard that if you just change the file extension it will let you do it, but my computer seems to be too smart for that. I end up with a file like, cat.m4r.m4a, not cat.m4r like I want.

Are you using a Mac or PC? If using a PC, then you generally have to go to the file properties to change the extension (at least this is the way it is in XP). Unless you have your folder set to display extensions--then you might be able to edit it without going into the file properties.
-
I have a ringtone where my phone vibrates and buzzes like it's really angry about something.
-
Oh god, that reminds me. Saturday evening I put my cell on vibrate in case the Technical Staff called while I was out at a loud street concert with the pugs. You may recall my earlier complaints about never being able to reach him on his cell when he is out of town, so I didn't want to risk missing the call. He didn't call, of course, because of some typical elaborate series of mishaps that left his phone inoperable. So since the phone never vibrated, I never got a chance to be reminded it was set that way and turn it off.
So the next morning, I went outside to sit on the patio with my laptop, and the very instant that my butt hit the chair, the phone started to vibrate, and I thought I had sat on a HUGE buzzing stinging insect, so I LEAPED up screaming and dropped the computer on the other chair.
The computer seems to be fine, so this is funny. Holy shit, that 'vibrate' setting does not mess around.
-
i have a clip of an instrumental latino/punkabilly song called 'malaguena' by the band calavera. it looks like my blackberry wont let me use voice recorder notes as custom ringtones for specific contacts. unless i havent figured out the trick, yet...

That sounds like it would have been really, really funny to see.
My phone is always on vibrate. I'm in and out of courtrooms where you have to have the ringer turned off, plus I can't hear the dang thing ring when it's in my pocket anyway.
-
I'm sure it was. I really have a big problem with stinging buzzing insects. It was a sad waste that no one was watching.
-
My ring tone is the Metal Gear codec alert because it sounds innocuous enough to normal people and allows me to identify nerds in public.
it's not working in the way where, Apple won't let me use just any old file as a ringtone.
.
Yeah, like Sr. Jorge said, you probably just have to set up your folder properties to display file extensions.
-
YES!
I think this just worked.
Except, I forgot, I never figured out how to get just the audio from keyboard cat. I'm sure i can find it easily, but I have to run to class right now.
So for now my ringtone is the opening guitar bit of "California Sun" (Ramones cover).

This condition, of spazzing out when your phone unexpectedly vibrates, has been called "beepilepsy."
-
Well that is particularly appropriate since I had mistaken it for a bee. Well, it would take more one of those ENORMOUS HORNETS to buzz like my phone does, but it's all the same to me.
