Ok. Here's my theory:
Beef's not really dead. The potion is just some kind of knockout drops which put him in a deep state of catalepsy. This is all an elaborate play? stunt? moral lesson? orchestrated by Cartilage Head to further demonstrate the characters' flaws -- Beef's depression and utter lack of self-esteem, Teodor's ineffectiveness and Ray's buffoonery.
He's not really dead. Surely he's not really dead. Ah Beef, we hardly knew ye. (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=08272009)

He's a cat. He has nine lives. He's only used up a couple, right?
-
In my ongoing attempts to second guess our tour guide on this carnival of dreams I think that's Cornelius in the audience.
Those are rather trite last words though.

beef gets reincarnated as ray

beef gets reincarnated as ray
and ray gets reincarnated as beef. It's perfect!

Yeah, not happy about this. If CH knew Beef was about to die of whatever, then so be it. For him to offer up the "hemlock" and hurry it along... I am not down with that.
-
my guess: uncle marion culpepper (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=06072004) - but i do notice that the hat is different. and i think this is beef's fourth death since he joined the cast:
- pat with the gun in vlad's subway (wherein we meet molly)
- nightlife with the weed and golf cart (wherein beef almost scores)
- lie-bot with the gun at the hospital (wherein we meet trouble man and no-no)
though it could be argued there was a fourth already (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=12112003), which would make this the fifth. now, how many times did beef die before onstad decided to chronicle his adventures? he's got a maximum of 4 left and he's used 4 or 5 since his first appearance (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=01102002) which ain't such a good track record, but hey at least it happens less than once a year.
did i miss any?

I think it would be great, on a number of levels, if this was simply the last Achewood strip, and the series ended here. It's pretty clear that Onstad's losing steam, and he seems more interested in prose writing and flexing his dramatic muscles than in providing the rough chuckles and cartoon cat shenanigans of yore. Having your lead character fade and die as entertainment for an almost abandoned theater is a nice metaphor for how he must feel about Achewood sometimes. I know this won't happen, but a dude can fantasize.

catalepsy
Right? Right?

If only it were thus. The decline and fall has been downright painful to watch.

He's just about to release his second ever book from a real publisher for sale at Amazon and everything. I don't see this happening.

"Roastbeef is offline." Is this Onstad's way of telling us that 'Beef strips will only be available to subscribers from now on?
-
It is true that heaven is for subscribers only.

can'd for truth

I don't understand people who say he is falling off. I don't see it. Late strips are as funny as early ones - funnier in certain ways. He's changing, sure, but sic transit gloria etc.

You say that like it's a bad thing. Oh wait...
-
it has been a while since roast beef visited the afterlife. we haven't seen troubleman and no-no in a while.
it is funny how Roast Beef was so cooperative with all this.
let's recall Roast Beef's greatest victories:
1) hacked yahoo
2) created successful greeting cards
3) engineered Ray's Great Outdoor Fight Victory
4) sold lots of stuff at a garage sale.
5) piloted a rocket to the moon

if thats all it takes to arouse his fury, then how does he e-get along with the rest of you guys? unless my reply was, in fact, overly douche-y...
