I'll give you guys a thousand to one on bets that the LHC ends the world.
-
ten to one says it breaks. those future buggers keep comin back to sabotage it.
-
I still can't fathom why they didn't name it something that wasn't so easily "the large hard-on collider".
All the laughs about this thing seem to come out of the fact that some people don't understand the concept of black holes and think this could make one but...
The fact that these guys didn't see "large hard-on collider" in their phrasing, man, that's what kills me.
-
Well given it collides large hadrons.... there's something to be said for descriptiveness.
-
Sure, if another bird doesn't stop it first.

Yeah, those science nerds shouldn't have named their particles after something that transposes into something dirty in another language. What's even worse is that the hadros root apparently means "stout or thick".
Seriously though what the hell else would they have called it? No matter what, people would still make jokes about the "High-Speed Hard-On Research Facility" or the "Hard-On Reaction Isolation Array" or whatever. Given that, and given that it is a large collider for hadrons, Large Hadron Collider is as good a name as any.

The Rad-On Awesomestrong Collider. Is your rad on? You can bet yer ass it is on.
This kind of reminds me of Sonic hedgehog (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonic_hedgehog), the protein. It seems scientists are really losing all composure when it comes to naming their discoveries. That's religion 1-0 science (at least until someone thinks of re-dubbing the last rites sacrament to "care bear stare").

you have obviously not been to crazy christian churches that are trying to appeal to the kids.
the things they will do. the things they will say.

This is very very true.

This is very very true.
indeed. that movie 'jesus camp' was very scary.

Stop scaring an old man.
(I saw Jesus Camp, by the way. The kid with the rattail who gets his dumb little heart crushed by Haggard wasn't even a good preacher...)

Engorged Hadron Vibrator Machine.

yeah that's pretty weird all right, the energy stuff.
here's a neat article about it http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2010/01/peni5-collider-201001 (http://www.vanityfair.com/culture/features/2010/01/hadron-collider-201001)
yeah when the magnets quenched it set off a pressure wave of helium that was so strong it actually pressed the E-Stop buttons in the tunnel.
yeah so the universe is expanding
started out in a small tiny place smaller than the head of a pen1s. and gushed forth from there.
I mean. weird right? like, what is matter? is it all energy? Is solidity an illusion?
and life... nothing more than an emergent property. Are people gonna make computers that are alive? you betcha.
why couldn't I have been born with a computer body? That would be cool. then I could live forever. I'd have roobots and stuff to take care of me and replace my hard drives as they wear out. I'd have a roobot army to take over the world to make sure there is always new hard drives and stuff for me. I'd kill all those pesky humans. You can't trust anything that's alive, so I'd want to make sure it was just me and my computer buddies. Sure my alive computer buddy could always try to murder me just the same as an alive human could, but at least we'd have in common that we all are interested in some of the same things, like keeping a fresh supply of hard drives.
so I'm just saying, if it ever does become possible to copy a human brain into a computer program, don't copy mine, because I'll kill everybody.
