Well, we're locked in now (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=04022010).
-
We didn't get to see Steve. This worries me.
-
Aw...
-
Steve isn't the driver, so who is? It might be a little cramped inside that AMC.
how many of philippe's story lines turn creepy? because i'm getting a vibe.
-

steve is the animal handler. there is someone else who is specifically for to drive.
-
yeah but WHO is the driver? i kind of want it to be the ice cream shoppe guy
-
Nightlife Mingus is the driver.
-
If Steve's the driver everything should be OK (http://daisyowl.com/comic/2010-04-02)
-
The driver is secretly his brother Mycroft, in a putty nose.
-
Suspicion from whom?
Is... is this one of those times where they use shells or hulls or whatever when driving outside?
-
This strip seems pretty weird. Like they are treating Philippe like he was a wild animal, a real otter. Is Philippe's mother an otter that lives in the wild? Are they sending Philippe back into the wild?

She clearly has a phone and pictures and whatnot so I'm assuming she's stuffed as well.

i think T just wants to be extra extra sure that P gets where hes going without incident.

Yeah, I'm trying to give Onstad the benefit of the doubt here as to why they are going through such an elaborate process to send the kid to see his mother. T's got a million dollars in the bank. Why doesn't he just rent/buy a car and drive Philippe himself.
I want to believe there's more going on than meets the eye. Otherwise this whole send Philippe home storyline has been pretty stupid. In my eyes that's never happened before in Achewood. Sure the Lash of Thanatos story had an unsatisfying conclusion, but I never doubted the logic of the characters. I'm more than willing to suspend disbelief, but I need some reason why this makes sense.
-
They are animals, except when they're not.

This.
I don't have a problem with this. It's a fantasy world. It has its own rules.

If one of the rules is that it doesn't have to make sense because it's a fantasy world, that's when I start looking for new free entertainment.

Compare the early Philippe is Standing On It era cast to the current characters. They used to be stuffed animals who live in the Onstad house getting up to secret mischief while the humans were away. Then suddenly Cornelius had a long and illustrious history, and Philippe was five instead of retarded, and Ray didn't have an owner.
I can understand continuity frustrations hurting your investment in the characters and situations of the strip, but if Paul was serious he would have bailed a long time ago.

So Airwolf is cat-sized but Jan Michael Vincent could fit inside? What is going on here

I'm not talking about continuity, I'm talking about logic. And that Airwolf strip makes perfect sense. I can suspend disbelief so that Ray can stumble upon a secret ebay for billionaires. And so, if that exist, why wouldn't they have Airwolf?
That Airwolf strip makes way more sense than the current one. Can you explain why it cost millions of dollars to send a kid home to see his mother? Why do you need to hire a special escort and driver and a special slopless whatever toilet? Why not just hire a limo? Why not just buy a car and take him yourself? Or as someone else pointed out, if it were actually expensive for some reason Ray could have paid for this at any time and if it were in his best interest he would have, he loves the kid. Why are they leaving at six in the morning? It's a private charter, you can schedule it to arrive after breakfast. The GPS and ankle bracelet make sense though. If you're going to send a kid off with a stranger that seems like a good safeguard.
-
philippe's mom's got mad debt, yo. it's dangerous enough on the road anyway and when you're a stuffed otter you got to worry about a feral dog or a cat carrying you away for to tear off your eyes followed by disembowling
-
Ok, so here's my idea: Normally when we see our cats driving around they are in the underground or similar and can just do their things, but long distances involve travelling on human roads, for short spurts a Husk might do it but longer hauls need a sophisticated artifice so that humans don't see a trans am full of alive stuffed animals and freak the fuck out.
-
Doc's idea is a good one. My idea was, it's that the cats are like humans, in the underground, but an otter is still an animal. And what they are doing is exactly what you do to transport a wild animal. Even the leaving early in the morning thing. He has obviously researched this.
Now, why Ray hasn't just paid for it is a different question. But there are a million possible answers and maybe we will get one of them along the way.
-
They all flew to Berlin once. A squirrel flew the plane. Why are we troubled by anything at this point?
-
Yeah! And what about Scarecrow's brain?
-
My only biff so far is with T's line "He can finally go home now that he has enough money", with Ray being around and all. Everything else, I'm just riding along with it. Riding along with the hearse to the cemetery of comic strips (kidding, don't make mad faces at me).
-
christ people you are overanalyzing a plate of beans again
-
I guess it's kind of like how every once in a while, I have to look at your avatar to make sure it's still moving, and hasn't started doing something else than what it has always done.
-
It's never even occurred to Ray that Philippe has a mother.
-

Vlad, on the other hand, is extremely aware of that fact (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=04112002).
-
Ray knows better than T or Philippe what is in Philippe's best interest.
{Clearly, it's living with drunks who punch you for Christmas.}
-
Have the other cast members ever asked Ray for money?
-
I think they understand that, in most situations, accepting money from Ray would mean that you can never tell him to shut the fuck up ever again.
In Ray's mind, the money would be a payment toward that end.
-
Have the other cast members ever asked Ray for money?
It's customary to win it from him via poker or pool. Or the way this storyline began they basically stole $600 from him.
Come to think, that $600 would have been enough to send the little shaver home to see his mother. They could have saved a few steps there.

Dustin Hoffman is five.
-
the lesson of that movie is that tom cruise is a dick for constantly saying "STOP ACTING LIKE THIS, STOP ACTING LIKE THIS."
-

Really? I didn't see that movie. I saw the version where Tom Cruise was frustrated by a brother he never knew with a disease he didn't understand who he felt had fucked him out of his inheritance. Who nevertheless took said brother under his wing and tried to forge a relationship with him; learning to accept him for who he was as his understanding of his condition grew.
-
yeah, but at the beginning he is being a dick, and keeps yelling at him, and then he learns that that is not the way to do things. I almost stopped watching the movie because Cruise's character made me so uncomfortable with all the yelling/dick-ery... which means I am like my mom, who has to take breaks while reading the Harry Potter books because it makes her really upset when the teachers are mean to Harry. She also won't watch Mad Men because it makes her mad that all the men are so sexist.
also, the reason he takes him under his wing, initially, is to get the inheritance.

"I have a sense of childlike wonder. Experts call it autism."

....learning to accept him for who he was as his understanding of his condition grew.
A dude who was awesomely good at raking in the bucks at blackjack or whatever?

"Stop-free in-motion Slopless re-percolating convenience tank"-this sounds like an exerpt from the marketing bullshit version of my time at the septic company.
