Alternate title: "a bucket of Colonel and a pint of dippin' gravy"

Raise your hand if you are so easily identified by the items in your car.

Back when I had a car of my own...the leopard print: seat covers, steering wheel, hanging air freshener, CD case, rear seat organizer, and visor mirror usually gave me away.  If not that, then the bumper sticker that said, "You can always tell a [my alma mater] girl, but you can't tell her much."

I mean, if you even have to ask the question there's so much fundamentally wrong there that I don't think there's anything anyone can do to help.

My car appears completely clean from the outside since I never leave anything on the seats/floor. But if you get close you can see I'm too lazy to vaccuum/dust. Ever.

Easy for you to say from your cushy Pacific coast state.  Try coming here and borrowing the leopard print monstrosity of a motor vehicle when yours is unavailable.  It was nightmarish.  Truckers would laugh at me on the highway.  Truckers! (http://www.sssf.org/images/trucker.jpg)

My suspicion is that these people are actually in Heaven and just subcontracting misery. I really doubt poor Scrambles went to Hell.

I love the idea that Ray ordered all that KFC and then apparently didn't actually eat it. It's so... Ray. (And I love the fact that Beef can apparently spot the KFC from long range -- at first, I thought he was just supposed to be mystically sensing Ray's car, despite it being an identical 1982 Brat to everyone else's in Hell.)

Meanwhile, where's Robert Johnson? I want to see the conversation between him and Beef.

Pedro is right - you see, in old fashioned pinball tables you could literally tilt and bump the table to get the ball rolling where you wanted.

Sometime in the 60s manufacturers started adding little mercury bubble switches (the same kind used as booby-traps in bombs which make the bomb explode if you pick up or jostle the bomb) that would turn off the flipper controls if you bumped the table too much.

Often the "TILT" light would come on to admonish you for playing dirty.

But it is generally agreed that tilting the machine is part of the game, and part of any winning player's strategy.

Just ask Tommy.

I was just kidding with the pinball machines.  I thought this was some new ice machine related usage I'd never heard of.

In the newer pinball machines, TILT makes your flippers go limp.  This often reinforced association with banging on the machine and going limp later proved to be a psychological barrier difficult to overcome.

Recovery was a hard road.  I'd like to thank my wife and Whack-A-Mole (http://www.fathom.org/nicky/whackamole2.jpg).

Though not always evidenced by my posts, I am able to remember old-school pinball. You know what makes my flippers go limp? Condescension.

Seriously though, let's think. Ice machine... on tilt... DAMMIT! All I can think of now is pinball. All hitting the ramp bonus. All wondering what freak had a 14-digit high score.  All spending my day at the water park in a vain attempt to be that geek. All abandoning the machine when Shinobi dropped...

I have always used the term "on the tilt" to mean broken - just like saying "on the fritz" - and that's what I assume it means.

A broken ice machine, while totally fitting my past experiences with Best Western, does not explain 4 things adequately:

1) I had forgotten that the word "Tilt" is capitalized.
2) its "on Tilt" not "on the tilt"
3) why Beef would actually be looking for a broken ice machine. Maybe he will follow a trail of ice from a vandalized (re: Tilted) ice machine that Ray has likely toe up?
4) why I harp on things I cannot explain

good and obsessive points - I was thinking the machine Beef is seeking would be broken from over use from over drinkin', but the capital T has now thrown me as well.  Hooray for semantics!!

Not so much vandalized as completely exhausted. Wherever there is an empty ice machine, Ray is somewhere nearby getting his mad drink on. If we want to be overly obsessive about it, I will point out that old pinball machines, once tilted, were pretty much locked up until reset by the operator.

These days (not that they're really making pinball machines anymore, the bastards) the tilt mechanism is a plumb-bob suspended in the center of a metal ring. If the machine is sufficiently tilted / physically abused, plumb-bob touches metal ring, completes circuit, triggers Bad Things, etc. It would be completely unscrupulous to open up a pinball machine and tape said plumb-bob out of harm's way.

Your post does not explain 3 things adequately:

1) wouldn't that be #5? or are you answering? it is not clear. if only everyone could be an asshole in organized list form like myself...
2) yours is a statement of fact, the above points sought to explore the root of Roast Beef's statement on a fundamental etymological/semantic level

On Tilt, or full tilt can also mean taken to the extreme, as in as far as you can go before you totally tump over.  It's old school dope slang.  In the case of an ice machine on tilt I would take it to mean one that is hella making ice as fast as it can.

I don't think that that's what it means, cuz it just wouldn't make sense in the context of things.  Unless Ray used so much ice that the brain in the ice machine needs to make more speedy fast.  Doubtful though says I.

i took 'tilt' in the pinball sense, picturing an impatient ray banging on the machine when it stopped giving him ice for a while though his bucket was only HALF FULL.  the ice machine senses that it's being banged upon (via mercury switch, plumb bomb, or other such device), and starts beeping and flashing 'TILT' at ray.  this of course that the machine will refuse to even so much as make the "i'm trying to find some ice for you" noise when ray pushes the button.

to me, that mental picture was the funniest part of the strip

Say, can you tell us about Pedro and that movie?

She's letting me tell it.  While I think Pedro is a fun moniker for a blindingly white-skinned person, I was actually born with the equally unlikely name Adrian.

One day while I was proctoring the SAT (Scholastic Achievment Test), I told the kidlets to call me Mr. Dunston.  One of the girls responded, "Like Dunston Checks In."  I smiled painfully because I like my name and don't like apes, but I decided to go with it.

"Yeah," I said.  "Actually, my first name's Adrian like Mrs. Balboa.  You know.  Yo Adriaaaan."  They stared.  "You know, Rocky?"

The girl kind of smirked.  "I think that was before our time."

Just before saying I hadn't been born in 1978 either but I've heard of Rocky Balboa, I remebered hearing on NPR the night before that Sylvester Stallone's last two movies had gone straight to video, and that he was pretty much washed up for all time.  I can't understand it.   I mean.  Who could forget Rocky III with Mr. T?  The man could do no wrong.  (Except maybe Rocky V, but that's not the point.)

I've since given up.  Wife, job, mortgage.  I haven't been alive a quarter century, but I'm already old.

I ended up telling the administrators that I had caught the girl cheating on her SAT.

Actually, Rocky was released in 1976, and won best picture that year.

And deserved it.

And incidentally, most of the male Adrian's I've met have been of eastern european or of Russian descent.

And yes, if you were to introduce yourself to people in Philly they really would say "Yo, Adrian" but not because of the movie.  They really talk like that here (but generally only in South Philly, a predominantly Italian community known for having the best restaurants in the city, or possibly the whole Eastern Mid-Atlantic).

Or are you kids too young to remember an obnoxious yet oddly hot MTV-Jay named simply "Kennedy".

Or are you all so young as to not remember when MTV played music videos?

There were only short bursts during my life in which one of the cables plugged into my television ultimately led to Ted Turner, and I am not currently enjoying one of them.  I'm not old, but it could be said that I'm living in the past.

I do remember the first Al TV though.  That's got to count for something.

Boy, you remember when MTV played videos?  And now they don't play videos anymore!  No videos!  None!  They call themselves "Music Television," but they don't play any music videos anymore.  Videos were so cool.  And now they don't play them.

If I had a quarter for every time someone pointed this out, I could set up my own damn music video station.

Hate for Kennedy seems to be near universal, but I was always a big fan.  She used to be an intern at the radio station I listened to in high school, and occasionally talked on the air.  She was then called "The Virgin Kennedy".

I still watch Friend or Foe (http://www.chris-lambert.com/FOF.html) (occasionally) on Game Show network just to see her.  It's not a bad game show, either.

Boy, you remember when MTV played videos?  And now they don't play videos anymore!

Yes.  I remember the breathless anticipation that gripped the VJs leading up to the World Premiere Video of Loverboy's "Hot Girls in Love." And then that would lead into an Ultravox video.  Good times. (http://www.geocities.com/videogamelists/mtv01.html)

Now it's pretty much Lifetime Cable Television For Horny Teenagers.

Long live April Wine.

Hate for Kennedy seems to be near universal, but I was always a big fan.  She used to be an intern at the radio station I listened to in high school, and occasionally talked on the air.  She was then called "The Virgin Kennedy".

I find this an oddly charming image, or perhaps I just like the title "The Virgin Kennedy."

Anyway, this thread reminded me today of the time when, on a high school trip, I once found an infamously-stonerish friend of mine staring at the ice machine and repeating "Ice." in an extremely baked monotone. Both he and the machine were on tilt, I suppose. (Of course, this was the same trip when one girl managed to smoke up our entire floor of the hotel, and another friend of mine went spontaneously paranoid during a Hearts game -- in retrospect, we may have actually been in Hell. Or at least in western Nebraska.)

only vaguely related but here goes:

My first job was at a KFC, and the training video was narrated/hosted by a finger-licking and gyrating "Downtown" Julie Brown in a frightening spandex outfit.  Being Canadian and not really seeing MTV ever, my awareness of her B-grade celebrity was weak to say the least.
