This is the kind of thing I've been talking about!
http://technology.todaysbigthing.com/2010/08/13
If seeing creativity like this doesn't give you a future-boner, then honestly, I think you're too old to live.
-
Neat, well-designed stuff but hardly a new concept.
-
Not new, certainly, but not quite old, either. Very nice designs. I'll have to consider one of those wallbeds when I build a tiny house (http://www.tumbleweedhouses.com/) in my backyard as a writer's retreat. (I've decided this is a thing I want to do when I have 20 grand to spare. I am really fascinated by these ultra-efficient small homes, if I didn't have young kids I would love to try living in one for a year.)
My in-laws have a coffee table kind of like the first one on the video. They have a 3,000 square foot home with an ample dining room, but they eat in the living room so they can watch House Hunters while they eat.

the saddest thing
-
Especially since they can actually see the TV from their dining table, albeit from 20 yards instead of 5...
-
the saddest thing
What is the attraction of those shows, anyway? Is it just voyeurism?
-
I like to watch the DIY shows because I have a house and want to make it better.
My MIL likes House Hunters and its ilk for the same reason my mom likes the Home Shopping Network, but more so. "Look at the stuff we could have!"
-
That's going on my Facebook wall ASAP. Maybe not new, but its new to me. We're casting around for a way to get more functional space in my daughter's room. Our 4 bed house should probably be 3 beds with bigger rooms.
-
jaydub, you might want to check out Wasted Spaces on Hulu. Lots of good ideas there for how to DIY and save some $eriou$ bread.

Well duh, of course they're not new, what am I, an infant here? But imagine this:
The couch and TV disappear effortlessly into the walls. Racquetball court.
After the game winner you play air guitar, but it sounds like a real guitar.

I like DIY better than HGTV. You can actually learn stuff DIY.

that's neat... however... addressing one point...
the reason a small studio apt costs what it costs is because you can't live in it comfortably... The factor that determines the price is the question of how much discomfort people are willing to put up with. If new technology makes a thing comfortable, then it will go up in price, and this opens up a price point for a new uncomfortable thing, in this case that new uncomfortable thing would be even smaller apartments. The free market is really a bitch in this way. As long as the market is free and unregulated, there will always be uncomfortable price points for products and things that suck.

Way to shit on a man's dream of sleeping on a foldaway bed.
-
JL, you don't need a whole tiny house to write in, you just need a shed:

I'm sorry, I think the foldaway bed is great, I'm just sayin', the solution to the ills of our time is not to be found in new inventions of technology, it is to be found in how we share resources, and how we manage the use of existing technologies. So the only new technological invention that would truly help us would be of the information technology variety.

I was waiting for someone to figure everything out. Thanks for this.

when were hungry, information technology will keep us alive.

You're fuck*ng retarded.

I sense sarcasm, Captain Picard... I don't think it's safe for us to approach...

okay... you don't like logic?
-
okay... you don't like logic?
I know I wasn't around when everyone went down this road, but . . . well, you're in your twenties, right?
-
early to mid 30's. but age means nothing. I am simultaneously wise beyond my years and retarded. It depends on the subject matter. So I dunno if maybe you are calling me retarded for failure to integrate some kind of socialization gradient into my logic or something, but generally speaking, my logic is pretty strong. except when it's weak. But yeah, I'm like rain man in my logic, sometimes. I understand shit like... like Neo from the Matrix, man. I see the system around us. anyway, you're all dissing on me and stuff, well, whatever dude, if I were you, I'd kill myself. ha ha ha. See what I did there. I'm happy to be me. so anyway, I (me) was trying to share some logic with others (you included) but you all are like "you're retarded" and you know what... I think you all of you who feels that way just don't like logic. you're all logic haters. you want some nice vision of the world that is the way you see it, but you know what, I think your retarded!!! so their!!!!
-
You seem like a guy who likes to hear people agree with you, so I'm going to suggest the documentary named Collapse. I bought this movie the other day and couldn't bare the moon man logic the guy uses, but you, you would enjoy it.
-
Is that based on the book with the same name by Jared Diamond?
-
I must have missed seeing some stuff in what I wrote up there.
-

No its based on some space cadet's assumptions that technology will never advance and human society will just let itself crumble into oblivion rather than continue to do what it has done since the beginning of time and develop unique and innovative ways to solve our problems.
-
run on sentence ahead...
The human society which is developing unique and innovative technologies to solve problems is only a small percentage of human society. The vast majority of human society isn't innovating at all, rather it is just stagnating and trying to survive, and that minority of human society which is innovating really has, since the beginning of recorded history, yet to do anything substantial to improve the quality of life of the vast majority of human society, and indeed to the contrary, 'innovation' has not improved the quality of life for the majority of human society, rather it has lowered the quality of life for the majority of human society, to wit all those suffering in 2nd and 3rd world countries... these countries have adopted various economic innovations and technological innovations, and are far worse off for it than when people there were happily existing in pre-industrial society. Moreover, all of that high-quality-of-life in the '1st world' which you equate with technological innovation, sure to some extent it's a product of technological innovation, but keep in mind that a central ingredient of '1st world' quality of life is the exploitation of the 2nd and 3rd world for cheap labour and cheap raw materials. Show me some society where the majority of technological innovation positively impacting quality of life isn't married at the hip with extensive exploitation... You're seeing only one site of technological innovation, without seeing the full picture of the actual reality of the situation.
I don't care if you disagree with me, but merely stating so is boring. It might be interesting to hear why you disagree with me.*
*(it could not be interesting because you are wrong.)
-
That's why I'm moving to Mars.
-
Are you seriously suggesting that technological innovations haven't improved the quality of life for the majority of humans? What about Norman Borlaug? What about anti-biotics? Whether or not these sorts of technologies are beneficial in the long run remains to be seen, but life expectancy has improved for the majority of humans.
Also, you're making a huge unsupported assumption when you suggest that every person in a 2d or 3d world country is suffering and that they're suffering worse than in pre-industrial times. Cite? Aren't you romanticizing pre-industrial times a little? Or a lot? What makes you think subsistence farming was an idyllic existence?
-
To come in late: I really like this furniture because cartoons in the 1980s primed me to approve of things that become other things but in my head these will either be wonky and nowhere near as easy to operate as they seem in the video or so expensive that if I could afford them I could probably afford a bigger house, this might be based on a misconception of how much houses are going for these days, though.
-
Oh okay, so youre a marxist. You could have just come out and said that, it aint a thing.
-
JL, you don't need a whole tiny house to write in, you just need a shed:

Yay! Shed! I have one of those!
Unfortunately, it's full of bicycles.
Actually, I want the tiny house as a combination writer's retreat/guest quarters. I might even like to build it on a trailer so that we can take it with us on vacations.

I mean, the stuff Fanta is saying is not retarded, a dude (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amartya_Sen) won a not-Nobel prize in economics for his work on that. The problem is not lack of technology, but lack of efficient/"fair" distribution of resources and technology. The year Borlaug's hybrid crops were introduced to India, they were already dumping millions of tons of grain into the ocean because they had so much, but corruption/inefficiency kept it from being distributed. Maybe it's easier to increase production than to end corruption, though (someone will link to this sentence and say "DING DING DING" and ignore everything else in this post.)
Also relevant is this stuff (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farmers'_suicides_in_India) and this professor who inspired me to switch majors. (http://www.sarep.ucdavis.edu/seminar/bothsidesnow.pdf)
I don't see how it is controversial to say that new technologies are not inherently beneficial or not-beneficial, and it's all about how we use them. "Guns don't kill people, people kill people."
I am glad that it is cheap for me to live in a big-ish apartment in Saint Louis. When I tell my friends in other towns how much my rent is, they weep.
Normally first they're like "oh, you pay that much each? That is really cheap" and I say "no, we pay that much COMBINED."
-

I can't disagree with that, but that's not how I interpreted the Phanta(m). He can speak for himself, but I took him to say that the technology itself was the problem.
-
Call me old-fashioned, but I always figured that prices increase when demand outstrips supply.
How, then, would decreasing the square footage of an apartment without sacrificing livability (and therefore being able to fit more comfortable apartments in a single building, increasing the supply to approach the level of demand) possibly cause prices to increase?
