Title: Sloppy Fallout 3 Makeouts
Post by: Nabubrush on October 18, 2010, 06:33:24 pm
Speaking of video games - you said you have Fallout 3 on the PC, didn't you? I'm thinking about getting it because I have it on the PS3 and it hangs and crashes constantly (only since I got the expansion packs). Do you have many if any problems with it? Also, I'm assuming the new one you're talking about is New Vegas?

I play it on the Xbox, actually. I have had a half-dozen episodes of hanging/crashing in my 120+ hours of gameplay, half of which have been since I installed Broken Steel around hour 90.

And yes, New Vegas is the one I'm picking up, but I can't crack it open tomorrow -- it's my brother's Christmas gift. He's getting me the same thing and we're exchanging when we get together at Thanksgiving. We fully expect our collective family to laugh, point, and ridicule us, but that's just the kind of nerdery we share.

Digitally-rendered blood is, after all, thicker than water.

I'm strongly considering buying FO3 and the expansions for the PC at about $35. At this point it's unplayable on the PS3. Grr.

Why not just get New Vegas? It's out for PC tomorrow (PS3 on Thursday) and, unless you're not very far in, it would kind of suck to have to start from scratch on a different platform.

Though I have to say, I've considered trading in my copy of FO3 to go towards the price of New Vegas, but I can't do it. There are still a lot of locations I haven't explored yet, and I've only got half the bobbleheads. Will I actually go back and get them after I start New Vegas? Possibly not. But I want to know the option is there, you know? Plus, I really love exploring the DC ruins because that real-life landscape is much more familiar to me than anything out west.

Is it time for us to get a room (aka new thread)? Have we bored everyone else into oblivion yet?

I've just figured out the problem with video games. Not enough pugs.

Pug Rising: 3 - Pug Vegas is coming out soon for Xbox.

It follows the story of a photo journalist from Dog Fancy.   He's covering a Las Vegas dog convention when all the pugs simultaneously get loose and run free.

He has 72 hours to capture photos of eat pug, before the dog catchers arrive to subdue the dogs.

I played the first one.  Pretty good.

I know a person who is very, very happy right now.  He left our company to go work at Obsidian because a lot of the Fallout people were there... and then they got to do New Vegas.

Hope it works out for the dude.  Maybe I'll pick it up for my comp time week off if the bloom wears off the Civ V rose by then.

(in case it wasn't clear, I was talking about the game Oblivion. that game turned into "collect the flowers" for me way too fast.)

my friends found a weird pinball bar in Saint Louis and I really want to go soon. classic punk records on (in?) the jukebox, run by two weird middle-aged dudes.

lately I really want to play an RPG. Actually, exactly what I want is to either play Diablo 2 with my college friends who moved away, or play Neverwinter Nights 2. Unfortunately, NWN 2 is unbelievably unstable on the Mac, and since I downloaded it illegally I can't exactly call in and complain.

What does that mean?  Why "collect the flowers"?  Is that a thing?

Oddly enough, it means collect the flowers. There are maybe a hundred ingredients with which you can craft potions, up to four ingredients per. Many of the ingredients are found as plants as you wander the landscape, and after harvesting (and a delay) they will regrow.

I'm kind of surprised a) this isn't in S&L, and b) it's sticky. But I don't know nothing about that stuff.

I started playing FO3 again based on this thread and NV coming out. Still lots of fun. I'm paranoid about my version being glitchy, though. Supposedly it doesn't get bad until the save file is 8mb. Right now it's sitting at 2.6mb or so.

Save often, is all I can suggest.

OK, so where are you, story-wise? Level-wise? What perks have you chosen so far?

I play a level 30 stealth/thief character with good karma and high medicine, lockpick, and science. Favorite perks are Grim Reaper's Sprint and Explorer; I wish I hadn't gotten the Mysterious Stranger perk, though, because I have Lawbringer as well and the bastard keeps poaching my kills. (Do I need to translate this into English? I get obsessive about stuff like this and may be over-jargoning.)

Are you aware of the Fallout wiki (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fallout_Wiki)? It's a good substitute for the dead-tree version of the Prima guide.

Not a huge fan of explorer, because I can find everything in the wiki (as you noted). The first time through, when I was having issues, I'd maxed to 30, and finished all the add-ons, other than Broken Steel (I think). I also finished the main story-line. Reaper is the best, but do you have LeDoux's hockey mask? It's basically unlimited AP, and never breaks. I ended up with that and Chinese Stealth armor, and even Deathclaws trembled hearing my name.

On my restart I'm level six. Three intense trainings, comprehension (must-have), and toughness. I really like sniper. Bloody mess is nice for the damage add-on, but I kind of get tired of all my opponents exploding when I kill them. Anyhow, I'm looking forward to playing through it again. It's been months since I fired it up. I may open up my old guy and look over his skills today.

I usually go with the Ranger armor; it's got a reasonable stealth rating and it's easy to repair with merc armor, plus the small guns bonus. My big brother plays a tank-type character and always goes for the power armor at the earliest possible opportunity, but I find it too heavy to carry around all the time and can't stand the speed and stealth debuffs that come along with it.

I have LeDoux' hockey mask, but I don't wear it because I don't like the way it looks. I play a female character, and she wears horn-rimmed glasses and an Enclave Officer's hat. I don't usually have AP regen problems any more (sniper + concentrated fire + Reaper's sprint + high luck = fuck*ng BAD ASS) and usually I can KO several super mutants without taking a single point of damage, provided they don't have an overlord with them. (Those bitches are insane.)

As I mentioned above, sniper + concentrated fire is awesome, especially if your small guns skill is anywhere near decent (gunslinger perk is nice in this combo too). I never took Bloody Mess, because I don't like searching all over the map for body parts. I hate when two or three people explode on a critical hit and you've got all these mismatched legs and eyeballs lying around and you have to click on them all looking for the one body you haven't looted yet.

I'm still messing with my first play-through because I took my good sweet time doing all the side-quests. I don't think I'll start again -- I like the character I ended up with, and while I'd take different perks if I had to do it over again (I'd ditch Mysterious Stranger and Here and Now for Comprehension and Swift Learner, for starters), I'm pretty happy overall with my character. Besides which, I'm looking forward to starting fresh with New Vegas (I picked up my brother's copy today, it totally sucks that I have to wait another month to play).

I took Nuclear Anomaly when I hit level 30 but I haven't had a chance to see it in action yet. (I rarely take that much damage in a fight.) Have you ever used it?

man, I am just so bad at games like this. Having to keep track of the equipment always completely screws me up. When we were playing through Diablo II my friends would have to walk over to my computer occasionally and just straight-up take the penis away and equip my guy.

even when I was a hardcore NWN nerd and played it every day for probably over a year, other people in the persistent world I played on would be like "dude, you are almost level 20, why are you still getting killed by these low-level enemies..."

I did almost perfect instead of nuke anomaly. I also like the mask because it doesn't break down, which is sorta nice. I also like the way it looks, although I don't see my guy much. IIRC, he has pink hair and a beard. I'm not usually a power armor guy, either, because of the penalties.

Hate hate hate overlords. I'd played it a lot before I got the GOTY edition, and all of a sudden 'hey, instant death over and over!' I also have problems with the searching when the folks explode. Actually, I have problems with searching even without that, sometimes - trying to find the sweet spot to pick things up and suchlike.

I'm not a fan of swift learner, because I didn't need any help getting leveled up, plus sleeping gives you +10% anyways. I didn't go for any of the bonuses to attributes through perks, for much the same reason - can just get them from books, especially if you save the books for comprehension. That's about 50% bonuses to all attributes.

I am looking forward to Vegas - especially as I've spent more time in the SW than I have around DC (as you sort of alluded to in reverse earlier). I'm going to wait to hear if it's glitchy on the PS3 though. I checked my old guy and the save is about 16mb, which explains why it doesn't play worth a shit anymore. Somewhere along the line I read something about shrinking save files to make them more playable. I might try to track that down, as I'd played through a lot of the game on ol' Iggy Ignatowski, and it was a shame to have to put him on the shelf.

My character's name is Jade (my usual handle, a play on my first and last initials), and she is heck of cute for a cluster of pixels. Green pigtails.

I've occasionally had issues where I'll change into a different suit for some reason (to get a bonus to my science skill from a lab coat, usually) and forget to change back into the stuff that keeps me from dying. But the nice thing about non-MMO RPGs are that if you fuck up, you can just take a mulligan and load your last save once you figure out what an idiot you are.

Also, did somebody add a filter for the word joystick or something?

No one has yet reassured Wombat that there ARE in fact dogs in Fallout 3. Most of them attack you viciously, and you kill them to collect dog meat.

BUT! One of them is kind and good. You meet him in a junk yard and he is your friend forever. He is named "Dog Meat."

Personally, I love having Dog Meat, but I can't stand people shooting at him, so I make him stay in my apartment.

Poor Dogmeat. He just wants to help.

Of course, you could always take the "Puppies!" perk, which allows you to get a replacement for Dogmeat if he gets killed during combat.

Yeah, I get Dogmeat early and park him as well.

Does anyone else collect useless things? My first guy collected billiard/pool balls and stuck them on the upstairs table (as well as collecting booze and miscellaneous foodstuffs and putting them in the nuka cola machine and fridge respectively). My new guy collects toy cars and nuka cola trucks and puts them on the downstairs bookshelf. Incidentally, I've never gotten the place at Tenpenny Towers - I've always stuck with the Megaton shack.

I collect Toasters, because I played Wasteland (http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Wasteland_(game)#Fallout_3).

Also, Bubblegum and Gumdrops, because they're super-rare. I still collect Quantums even though I finished the Nuka-Cola Challenge -- I have a huge stockpile. And I use the desk in my Megaton house as my trophy case for items related to completed quests -- the Wasteland Survival Guide adorns the top of the desk. I also keep a teddy bear on my bed.

I did keep all of the Lincoln artifacts instead of selling them after the Lincoln Memorial was restored -- I keep them on display in the living room of my Megaton house (pre-war theme). And I delivered a forgery of the Declaration of Independence to Abraham Washington and kept the real one (as well as the Bill of Rights) for myself.

And I have a large wardrobe of civilian clothes, because I like to think that someday the Capital Wasteland will be safe again and Jade will be able to turn in her combat armor and start wearing cute little frocks.

So yeah, I guess you could say I collect useless things.

I don't like them until they're dead. Then I LOVE them.

Do you play with any companions? I let Fawkes hang around until after the purifier was started (and in Broken Steel I had him start it for me, no sense risking my own neck, right?). And of course there are some quests that require you to take someone(s) with you, but in general I don't like riffraff hanging around getting killed, and I like to fight my own battles.

Hey Jay-Ell - you know that grocery store that has the big Rube Goldberg device with the pitching machine and the explosion and the goodies that fall from the second floor? I bought FO3 on the PC the other day and I just got there and it actually worked, unlike every time I went in there on the PS3 and it all went off but nothing fell. Had a good talk with my big bro today about various techniques for taking down an Albino Radscorpion (I use the Heavy Incinerator/back away quickly/map stimpaks to a hotkey technique) while my Mom and sister-in-law rolled their eyes behind our backs. It was good bonding.

I'm trying to figure out how to go forward with that. I did break down and get FO3 on the PC and I've been playing it while at work. It's definitely more stable than it was on the PS3, which is nice. I'm finding stuff I never got to see before because I finally quit playing. I do get corpses stuck through walls or stretched out (I was at the Chryslus Bulding yesterday and there were super mutant corpses dangling from the ceiling everywhere). I need to do some research and see if people are having the same trouble with it on the PS3 that they did with FO3, because I'm under the impression you can only play it on the PC if you're online.

I have it for xBox and there are definitely some bugs. I've crashed out of it 3 or 4 times in 30 hours of gameplay, and of course there are the usual graphical glitches that I came to expect in FO3. Don't know much about the PC version, but xBox seems about the same, stability wise, as the previous xBox version at the very least.

My wife will probably not be terribly receptive to the idea of getting an Xbox, what with three laptops, a desktop, and a PS3 in the house.

I'm not saying that; I'm just saying that my experience with New Vegas on the xBox is that it was similar to the experience I had with FO3 on the xBox, and since they used the same engine I think it's safe to say that the PS3 version of New Vegas will likely be as buggy as the PS3 version of FO3, so you might want to lean towards the PC version (when you can get online to activate it; I understand it requires Steam for activation/release patching but after that you should be able to play without an internet connection).

That's all I meant.

Yeah, I get that. The PS3 thing was weird, because the bugs are well-known and Bethesda basically said "hey, fuck you". The periodic 8 meg freeze is basically SOP for all users, as far as I can tell. I'm not sure about the Steam thing and also Win 7. I'll monitor the opinions for a bit to decide PS3 vs PC, I guess.

So I bought it for the PC. I had forgotten about my concerns about Steam. It's been installing and loading and activating for about two hours now, which . . . well, it's a bit jarring. There's no evidence so far that it can be played without logging into Steam, but I haven't done any in-depth investigation, because I'm afraid to upset the apple-cart just yet.

Hey JL, I been playing this for like a week now. If there's anything you want to talk about that maybe won't be too terribly spoilerish of the endgame, I'm up for it.

Did you turn on the weird occurrences thing before you started the game? I did, but I've only had a couple weird things happen (I think).
Title: Re: Sloppy Fallout 3 Makeouts

I didn't, but Pedro did. I missed the part where you could pick 2 traits, so I only picked Four Eyes.

When you run across a "Wild Wasteland" thing, you'll get a sound cue and a floating icon in the upper left(?) of your screen to let you know. There's plenty of weird stuff without it.

Where are you, story/locationwise? There's lots of stuff I'd like to chatter about, but I don't want to throw out any spoilers. I haven't reached the endgame yet, myself -- I'm purposely trying to draw it out as long as possible. But there are some things you probably want to discover for yourself that are main-quest-related, so I don't want to start talking about stuff on The Strip if you haven't made it there (or took a different route).

I just wiped out the Khans in Boulder. I fixed the solar collector. I saved the guy hiding in the gas station in Goodsprings. I installed the protectron as the sheriff. I cleaned up the prison. I've done some other exploring but thus far everything scares me too much. I'm used to being 30th level and deathclaws running in fear at the sound of my approach. Also, the poison bugs piss me off.

I don't think I've heard the sound cues or seen the icon, but I did come across a lone wanderer with a guitar (well, my guy commented on his guitar, even though it was propped up against a stump behind a billboard, some distance from us). He was escorted by some bodyguards. I also keep seeing crows or ravens, which strikes me as odd. I'm trying to resist the urge to look any of the stuff up on the wiki (but I've done so for some misc items that I don't want to schlep back to my house).

OK, if you'd encountered a true Wild Wasteland setup, you'd know. The Lone Wanderer is regular. Remember where he was, you might need him later.

Took out the khans, eh? I considered siding with them, or at least trying not to make them mad, until I found out they're slavers. I haven't taken them out at their HQ yet like I did at Paradise Falls, but I'm waiting to pick up a particular companion for that.

The poison bugs are awful. It's the only addition to combat I don't like, mainly because no matter how much antivenom I give my companions, they will not freakin' use it. I kept losing one particular companion to wandering radscorpions because she'd tear off in a random direction and I wouldn't even realize we were in combat until the thing was dead and she'd been stung. And don't try to use a stimpack on someone who's got venom in his bloodstream -- it'll kill them instantly. (Makes sense if you think about it.)

What level are you? A word of advice about the wandering monsters: if you see a group of cazadores, RUN. Those things are BITCHES. They're venomous, they're fast, and they FLY. If you have to fight them, shoot out their wings first. They're relatively easy to hit, and they slow the fuckers WAY down. That'll give you a fighting chance as long as there aren't too many of them.

Post by: Nabubrush on January 24, 2011, 04:06:51 am
Yeah, I was meaning the cazadores - I ran into the ones behind the "do not enter" sign really early (I don't follow directions well) and I had to reload. The other ones were young, I think. I killed a few of them, and I got bit, and so did Boone - but he just kept going unconscious and getting back up until he got well, I guess. I've never had trouble with the scorpions. I think I might be tenth level or so.

I wanted to steal the Wanderer's guitar, but I resisted. I never really played the old FO3 as an evil guy, but I'm sort of wanting to do so with this edition.

I found Black Mountain but I didn't go up. I also found the deathclaw quarry but I only picked a few of them off. I have Boone and Ed-E right now as companions.

Deathclaws are fuck*ng me over as they never did in the last game. Jebus.

On a different front, in the original game I always played goody two-shoes. Therefore, I always used the Megaton shack as my base. In NV, I'm using Victor's shack, but it's kind of a pain because I go to Goodsprings and have to hike, and if I want the reloading bench or workbench it's by the general store, and if I want the campfire it's by the springs - plus it only has three containers and I'm reluctant to use an ammo box for some reason. I looked at the quonset hut by the Yangtze memorial, but there's no campfire. I was just looking at (spoiler?)the cap counterfeiting shack as a potential base of ops, but I'm not sure that it has the amenities I want, either. What do you use? Have you found anything that has everything close by, and lots of containers and a bed?

Also, randomly, I'm having a lot more trouble with rads than I was in the last game. Weird, because a lot of the water isn't irradiated. And is it just me or is it kind of a pain in the ass not to have the little air meter from the last game? There might be things related to this issue that I haven't discovered yet, though. I'm really trying to play as much of this without spoiling it as I can.

I used a motel room in Novac until I got to the strip. (I still use it as a secondary base camp, but I don't store the bulk of my equipment there.) Hope that doesn't spoil anything for you, but if you've been putting off heading to Novac because you don't want to progress with the story too fast, it's probably worth your time to head over there next.

Wait, you have Boone? You must have been to Novac already, and completed "One For My Baby." If you didn't rent a room from Janie, depending how you completed the quest, you might not have the option to rent a room fro her any more. If that's the case, talk to the guy who runs the gift shop -- he'll give you a key for free, with the right speech options. (Doesn't require a speech check; it's just sort of buried in a conversation tree you might not have expected.)

Hope that helps. Let me know how it goes.

It wasn't sexy for the woman who gave me the key, that's for sure. That was a fairly jarring denouement, and I was even expecting it.

It did not occur to me to use the Novac room. I can't remember off the top of my head, where are the closest crafting/campfire/workbench/reloading deals? I know there's either a workbench or a reloading bench in a lean-to type deal in town. I will have to do some research. Thanks for the reminder!

According to the Prima guide, there's a workbench in a lean-to shack near the water on the Novac side of the railroad tracks near the water tower. There's a reloading bench and another workbench in the Poseidon Gas Station, which is what I use -- it's closer to my room. There's also a cheap medic who hangs around this area, which is useful for your little rad problem. The biggest problem is that the tap water is irradiated in the room, but I keep some bottled water in the fridge.

According to the wiki,

Quote
The two closest Campfire's are located in a cave west of the water tower up on the hillside and Gibson's Shack north and a little west behind Gibson Scrap Yard.

This bed is considered "owned," so it heals you in hardcore mode and gives you the "well rested" perk -- yet another argument for making it a home base. And as far as I can tell, the containers are secure. All in all, it's not quite as convenient as the Megaton shack, but it's pretty decent to start with, and depending what you decide to do when you get to the Strip, even if you get another primary base camp, Novac's location makes a nice "vacation home" for those times when you just can't make it all the way back North.

I'm going to try to do all the companion quests before I get any further with the main storyline, because there are some that require me to interact with the factions that are going to be really pissed with me later, one way or another. Right now I've got a guy named Arcade Gannon and ED-E (who I missed the first time through Primm). I didn't recruit Boone when I had the chance, I'm gong to have to pick him up after I finish with Gannon. (So no spoilers about Boone, please!) I plan to take him with me when I wipe out Caesar's Legion (those slaver bastards).

I've completed three other companion quests so far, out of a total of eight (six humanoid and two cybernetic). I've located the other three potential recruits, but skipped over them for one reason or another.

Remind me: do you have the Prima guide?
Title: Re: Sloppy Fallout 3 Makeouts

No, I don't have the guide. It probably would be better, as I'm playing it at work and I'm using the wiki on my iPhone, and I can't reliably connect in my room. I'm just basically bludgeoning along right now, which is actually pretty fun. I normally spoil the shit out of stuff for myself so as to maximize my experience and looting.

Yeah, I am bad about finding spoilers, so I played the first 60 hours or so without the guide. The way I'm trying to use it now is as a checklist to see which side quests I haven't done yet and finding out the triggers for them.

I didn't have the guide for Fallout 3 at all, and while I know I missed a lot of stuff (even though I used the Wiki to make sure I visited every location at least once), it was kind of cool to be able to just wander around on my own and mess around with stuff.

In other news, I just discovered a cave that had a trunk inside with over 7500 caps. I'm rich! I'm wealthy! I'm socially secure!

I'm level 30 and took the "Explorer" perk, and have visited about 60% of in-game locations at least once. I've also completed all but 10 side-quests for which I'm eligible (some I can't do because I opted not to work with Caesar's Legion.) I'm only halfway through Act II of the main quest, but that's because I've been purposely holding off on making some important decisions so I could focus on as many side quests as possible.

I wouldn't worry about spoilers with me.

I do need to correct my statement upthread about the Khans. They're NOT slavers -- drug-runners, yes, but slavers, no. The Legion are slavers, and those are the bastards I won't work with. I met a large number of Khans recently and, for the most part, they seem pretty decent. I've opted to not piss them off, even if they did ally with the Legion. They're actually quite a separate group.

I'm vilified with the legion, but ok with NCR (although I don't think that'll last). I tried to hold off on making enemies with the legion, but I ended up having to cut a bunch of them down, and now of course we scrap every time we see each other. I'm vilified with Powder Gangers, too.

I beat the game today. I won't say what ending I chose until you get to that point yourself, but the endgame was GOOOOOOOOD. Not quite as satisfying or clear-cut as the ending of 3, but it definitely had me wanting to go back and do things again just to see them play out in a different way. I am trying really hard not to just read all the endings and ruin it for myself forever.

I think I'm going to go back to the midpoint and finish with the other 2 alliances I didn't choose this time through, and then start a new character and ally with the Legion and be a little more of a bad guy. Should be interesting.

I really want to get Dead Money now, though. Apparently, they're working on 4 more expansions already! Can't wait.

I am pretty excited about playing it evil next time, I think I mentioned. I wanted to play some today, but stupid work. I'm still nervous about deathclaws, but everyone else I can pretty much whack.

You had said that you didn't want to hear about Boone, because you were going to get him - did you do so? I know there are quite a few other companions, and I'm pretty sure I saw some info that says that I've already wrecked at least one of them this playthrough, but I'm just wondering how you feel about them. ED-E and Boone pretty much fuck up everyone I come across - I'm happy with them. On the other hand, during 3 I got Dogmeat a few times but rarely ventured with him, and then toward the end of the last playthrough I got Fawkes and he rains terror down on everything.
Title: Re: Sloppy Fallout 3 Makeouts
Post by: jay-ell on February 04, 2011, 04:24:56 am
I did end up recruiting all the companions except one, and finishing their quests. I opted not to recruit the last one because he had a free quest instead of a regular type side quest, but I forgot at the time that there's an achievement for getting all potential companions, so I think on my next playthrough I'll pick him up and finish that.

I thought Boone was OK, but he wasn't my favorite. ED-E rocked as a second companion, especially since he's impervious to radiation as well as animal venom. I think you'll be able to figure out who my favorites were when you meet them. I mean, I'm pretty predictable in that regard, I think.

I think when I play through as a bad guy, I'm going to skip companions entirely. A lot of them won't hang with you long if you're allied with Caesar anyhow.
Title: Re: Sloppy Fallout 3 Makeouts
Post by: Nabubrush on February 04, 2011, 05:07:50 am
There are several things that bug me about Boone, as opposed to ED-E. Firstly, when ED-E plays his little tune, he's pretty much going to kill something, as opposed to Boone dicking around taking out his weapon and running in circles and then putting it away. Another is that Boone keeps talking about how he's this sniper, but then he often (really often) yards out his melee weapon. I suppose I can solve that by taking it away from him. I do, however, enjoy giving him a bunch of dynamite and standing back (except when he throws it at me).

Bethesda is notorious for putting out fairly buggy stuff. My FO3:NV locks up periodically when fast-travelling. I save early and often. My PS3 version of FO3 ended up unplayable when the save files got too large for it to handle (a known, unpatched bug) - about halfway through, maybe.

I know I've played at least one game where the only way to get certain unique items is by gambling (or maybe a different mini-game) but I can't remember what. This was pretty disappointing - brahmin steak and vodka and shit like that. They could have done a lot more with it.

I'm all about the shooting, too - that's one reason why I rarely had a companion in FO3. I want to kill everything myself.

New Vegas isn't a sequel, per se; it's a new story set in a new place with new characters in the same game engine. New Vegas has a few additional features -- most notably "hardcore mode," which requires you to eat, sleep, and drink water -- but the essential game mechanics are identical. So I'd suggest that if you're not interested in playing both, choose the one whose setting you prefer (probably the real-world city you've visited the most) and play that. You're not going to miss any plot points by skipping FO3 because the player-characters are totally different.

However, if you plan to eventually play both games, I'd suggest doing FO3 first simply because I've found that when you go back to FO3 after playing FNV, FO3 feels a little stripped-down without the additional features. (I get so frustrated at not being able to aim down the sights in FO3 now).

But if your gametime is limited, there's no need to play both unless you're a die-hard post-apocalyptia fic fan. There's at LEAST 60 hours of gameplay for a first-timer, and that's if you don't do too many of the side quests. I put 95 hours into my first playthrough and I didn't even visit all the locations on the map. I fully intend to go back to a previous save and put another 15 - 20 hours into my first character before I start my second playthrough. And New Vegas is very amenable to multiple playthroughs -- it's simply not possible to do everything there is to do in a single go. (Some of the choices you make close off other paths.)

So if you're just wanting to find out what all the fuss is about, New Vegas will do that for you just fine. You know where to come if you get stuck.

I read this today at notalwaysright.com:

Quote
(A man and woman with a 10-year old kid came up to my counter to rent Grand Theft Auto 4.)

Me: “You know, this game is rated and M and generally not considered a good choice for young children.”

Parent: “Yeah, so?”

Me: “Just saying… some parents don’t know I just wanted to make sure.”

Parent: “Pfft… like I care about that. You’re going to be a boring parent!”

And realized that someday I'm going to have this encounter:

Me: “You know, this game is rated and M and generally not considered a good choice for young children.”

I've been thinking a bit about that recently. My Dad still plays computer games (not FPS or anything, but games) and he's 78. I'm looking forward to FO6 having Hardcore mode and also old people mode, where everything moves slower. my dad is into strategy games, and plays one scenario over and over on progressively harder difficulty settings until he thinks he has mastered it. (IE, he has beaten it on every difficulty setting.)

He won't try Civ V, though. I want him to play it and like it.

Does he play other Civ type games?

I would say so. He likes strategy board games (Risk, Stratego), and games like Age of Empires. He also likes sim city, and once made a complete model of LA in the game. You know, so he could try to un-fuck-up the bad parts. This seems like a thing I would like to do. I remember he was impressed that he did a good enough job/the game engine did a good enough job that the right parts of LA turned all fucked up and burned out, prosperous, etc.

Now I'm wondering if he'd like Small World. I'm guessing no since most people like to describe it as "like Risk, but fun." So to anybody who actually likes Risk I'm sure it SW would be a dumbed-down crime against strategy.

OMG, so excited, just have to share.

For my brother's birthday, which isn't 'til May but which we'll be celebrating when he comes to visit in April, I got him a collector's edition metal Vault-Tec lunchbox, six authentic Nuka Cola bottlecaps, and a Vault Boy bobblehead!

I'm so pumped right now that I could take down a Deathclaw with a pocket knife! He has an extensive collection of sports (hockey) memorabilia, it's his main hobby (other than video games), but he loves collectibles in general (always has had what we call "Poke-brain" -- gotta catch 'em all) and since gaming is the main thing we have in common, I think this will really mean a lot to him. Plus, I was able to snag all of it on eBay for just about $50, which is the limit we decided on years ago.

(I was clever and bought the lunchbox and bobblehead from the same person even though the price+shipping was higher, I got them to combine shipping and dropped the price significantly. I thought I was going to have to pay $50 for the bobblehead alone. Win for me.)

So I am totally stoked and can not WAIT for this stuff to start arriving in the mail. Now I've just gotta figure out how to get a copy of the New Vegas collector's shwag for less than $80, I'll have Christmas covered, too.

Hmmm, the PC version is $10 cheaper. Inev, if I buy the collector's edition of New Vegas and keep the stuff, you wanna buy the game disk for $20? He's already got it for xBox, so he doesn't need the disk.

J, that is fuck*ng awesome. If I had those items, I would put them in a case in my bar.

In lieu of that, I'm finally going to get my Boilerplate (http://www.bigredhair.com/boilerplate/bp.gifts.html)* print and Bear Boy (http://www.pbfcomics.com/?cid=PBF037-Bear_Boy.gif) original framed, so I can hang them before our bandroom-warming party.

*For some reason, I can't find the specific print on his site. It's a cross between Boilerplate and Dreams of a Rarebit Fiend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreams_of_a_Rarebit_Fiend), by Windsor McCay.

Holy crapsticks, the arrived today. She actually sent the original clear molded plastic piece that holds the bobblehead in the lunchbox. It's pristine -- it looks like I went to a store and bought it off the shelf.

Fantabulous. I'm so stoked.

Oh, by the way, I've finished the main quest for New Vegas, Dead Money, and Honest Hearts. Let me know if you want me to post a mini-review of either of the DLC for you. I enjoyed them both, but they could not be more different from one another and still belong in the same game.

Old World Blues comes out in 7 days. I don't think I'll be able to play it right away, though, because my kids' last day of school is Friday. I won't really have any time to play until after the 4th of July, and by then it'll be almost time for Lonesome Road, which is the one I *really* want to see.

I'm not sure if any of those are out for the PC - that's the platform I ended buying it on, since my PS3 version of FO3 was so buggy after the DLCs came out. I'll maybe wait for the full package.

The Fallout wikia tells me they first two were delayed-release for PC, but they are both available now.

I just meant, you know, if you were interested in what they were about so you could decide if you wanted to buy either of them. They're $10 each (on XBox at least), which is pretty cheap compared to the expansions for FO3, but they are also not as comprehensive.

Wow, I never saw your post and now I feel like a dick for never getting back to you.

I am novelizing the DLC, starting with the last one (because I thought of doing it after I'd already finished the other 3 and it's easiest to capture when I can play a bit, write a bit, play a bit more). It is chock full of terrible spoilers so if you don't want to read it that's cool, but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

I mean, it basically tells the story as I experienced it so if you don't reading the book before you see the movie then you're not going to want to read this at all.

My first thought, on starting to play FO3 that I borrowed from a friend, is that this game is a lot creepier than Skyrim. In Skyrim if I got overloaded with adrenaline from fighting zombies in a crypt or something, I could bail and walk around a pretty field for a while.
Title: Re: Sloppy Fallout 3 Makeouts
Post by: jay-ell on March 29, 2012, 12:56:33 pm
There are definitely some creepier parts. I had more than one nightmare about FO3.

New Vegas is a bit lighter, overall. It has dark parts -- especially in first expansion, Dead Money -- but there is some silliness and humor that is a little harder to come by in FO3, and you spent about four times as much time outdoors. However, I prefer the story and setting of the Capital Wasteland, and Three Dog (have you heard of Three Dog yet, Inev?) is much more fun than Mr. New Vegas, IMHO.

Awww. I loaned out my copy last week, otherwise I would be very tempted to start another playthrough. But, I still haven't finished LA Noire. I think I'm close to being done, but it's hard to tell because they just threw me a major curveball.

Do you have any of the expansions? I highly recommend Broken Steel if you can borrow it -- that way you can continue indefinitely after you've completed the main storyline, which is nice for getting all those side quests done.

I'm grateful to Bethesda for basically saving the series with Fallout 3, but I much prefer New Vegas to it in almost every way. Hopefully Obsidian gets a steady gig doing Fallout games while Bethesda focuses on Elder Scrolls.

Me too, also.

I like the story of FO3 best, but I really liked the combat tweaks in New Vegas, and hardcore mode is awesome. Also, a lot of people didn't like the factions in NV, but I really did. My brother complained that it made it impossible to get 100% of the achievements and quests done in a single playthrough, but I think that's part of the fun.

Ok, how the hell do you survive the feral ghoul onslaughts in Vault 34?  They're too fast for grenades, and so tough that by the time I've knocked the first guy down with either the plasma rifle or the 5mm assault rifle that his mates are snacking on my brains before I can re-target.  My Guns/Energy skills are both right around 50, explosives 40, and level 15?  Am I just not tough enough yet?
God that place is a nightmare, with no lights, radiation steadily burning away, random blocked routes and the screams and hisses of the ghouls echoing through the hallways.  I'm surprised I didn't have nightmares last night.

Ohhhhh yeaaaahhhh! I looked it up on fallout.wikia.com to jog my memory and holy crap, I remember this vault well. Are you down by the armory?

I think I was level 18 or 20 when I tried it. I play a stealth character, so I eventually got past it (after numerous replays) by creeping in and lacing the hallway with mines. Then I'd blast the first ghoul to pieces with a plasma grenade and let the rest of them chase me (I had Light Step so I didn't trip any of the mines) all the way down the hall until they were all blown to bits. I think I used about twenty mines of various types spaced strategically down the corridor.

I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but I may also have let some of them out and then quickly closed the door behind me so that I could take them on a few at a time. I don't know how you'd play it as a tank-style character, but I'd suggest maybe leveling up a time or two and trying again. Do you have the armory key yet? No point rummaging around in there 'til you have it, really.

I'm not pure tank - I emphasized brains and quickness in the character creation (at the expense of Endurance mostly) and put the early skill points into science, lockpick, speech, and repair.  Plus guns, energy and explosives.  Melee, unarmed, and medicine I'm still weak in, as was sneak and barter until I figured out how important they are.  I've been dumping points into barter recently to be able to finish some quests that are dependent on your ability to negotiate.
Was the armory key on a drowned body in the flooded area?

Was there any way to save the monorail?  I tried a couple different ways to get there and it always pulled out of the station just as I was getting to the train door.  Had I made it, I doubt there would have been time to get to the bomb.

I had to look it up on fallout.wikia.com, because I don't remember. There are two passwords on submerged bodies; one gets you in to the Overseer's office and the other will get you into the armory. They key I was thinking about is actually to the gun case, it is given to you by a woman named Pearl, who you may or may not have met yet. I hope I did not spoil that for you.

Was there any way to save the monorail?  I tried a couple different ways to get there and it always pulled out of the station just as I was getting to the train door.  Had I made it, I doubt there would have been time to get to the bomb.

Yes, it is possible to save the monorail (and to use it as transportation throughout the rest of the game). Again, it's been quite a while since I played, but I know that I used the monorail several times as a convenient way of travel (before I thoroughly pissed off the NCR and they stopped letting me on). But it's probably not worth going back for if you're very far past that point -- it's not mission-critical.
