Hey Cort - you're the one who recommended The IT Crowd to me, right? Have you ever seen Garth Marenghi's Darkplace (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garth_Marenghi)? It looks like it would be good.
There are things like this (http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_llkppjqtys1qh6e90o1_500.gif) in it.
-
I can vouch for the awesomeness of Darkplace.
You could also check out Snuff Box (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vZDjWLwqAPY)for something that has some of the sadme people, it's more of a sketch show with recurring characters.
-
i was flipping through the channels a while ago and i came across a show on TLC called 'my big fat gypsy wedding'. i thought it was going to be about eastern europeans, but its about pikeys. i was all, "holy crap, pikeys are real!" and then i was sad because for special occasions the little girls look all grotesque and slutty like child beauty pageant contestants.

I watched that too. Did you see the one where the non-traveller girl was marrying the traveller boy?
The bride's mom made the gypsies look understated and tasteful.

I will look into that. I'm a fan of the Boosh, and I also like Nathan Barley and Time Trumpet (I wish there had been more episodes of that).
-
I will have to look into this
-
I think The United States of Tara (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1001482/) is terribly underrated. Tony Collette is fantastic. I can't recall where I first saw this show, but I do know I wasn't in Canada at the time. It's not aired in my region at all, so I've been dependent on ISO Hunt to keep up.
Also Ugly Americans (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uofQ0E7e8jU) is just wonderful.
-
Why isn't there an active TV thread?
This really is a question about some TV show I didn't just see, but I imagine some of you watch Downtown Abbey. Is Downtown really pronounced like "down-tun" instead of, you know, downtown? Normally this doesn't bug me but I can't get on board with this. It's Downtown! Things will be great! No finer place! Dang English folk, changing pronunciation of words to sound all fancy.
-
I don't watch it, but isn't it the case that the programme is actually spelled as 'Downton Abbey', without the w?
-
yeah, it is Downton. It is not Downtown. it is a big fancy house in the middle of a rural area, it is not downtown in any way.
That show rules. I watched 2 seasons and a christmas special in 2 days.
-
Oops.
In my defense I swear I've heard it said both ways.
-
Also in your defence, it's quite possible that a British place name ending with the suffix -town might be pronounced as if it had the suffix -ton.
There is really no hard and fast rule for pronunciation of British place names (probably all place names, come to think of it). You just have to be initiated. For every rule you could come up with, there will be a great many exceptions.
There should totally be a thread to talk about TV. We could argue about how to pronounce Treme.
-
I appreciate that, but there's really no
defence defense.
Treme. That's another one I somehow haven't yet seen.
-
I love Treme, though others who came to it because of David Simon's masterpiece The Wire have been more critical. There are extended scenes of musicians jamming, and if you're not keen on the type of music they play, it can take you out of the dramatic headspace, I guess.
It's not as good as The Wire, so far, but what on Earth is?
I must now go to work, delivering beer to the good people of The Garioch. 100 internet points if you pronounce that one right.
-
Same back at you if you can pronounce Jough.
-
Same back at you if you can pronounce Jough.
its easier to just not bother and call him "that dude".
-
its easier to just not bother and call him "that dude".
It's best to call him El Guapo. Never forget that he is God's Own Dick.
-
Anybody watch Justified? I'm enjoying this season so far but I feel like I'm waiting for it to coalesce or something. Probably because last season is one of those seasons that people compare to the Wire. Sure it was about a cowboy hat wearing US Marshal but it's really about so much more. Mostly I just think the characters are great and I love the dialogue.
-
Peep Show is so great. I'm glad that at least in the UK the main character can be a misanthropic, socially anxious monster of a man. It is worrisome how much I identify with Mark.
-
Walking Dead is back February 12th, and I am so looking forward to it.
-

Word. Hopefully with less talking and more sweet little girl zombies.
-
oh wow, Adventure Time. It just gets funnier and funnier so far.
-
I let my lil 4.5 yr old nephew watch that show when he's over. I guess I'm not seeing the brain rot in that one?
-
your nephew will get really into Stoner humor without realizing it, and CPS will get sent to his house to see if he is smoking pot.
-
your nephew will get really into Stoner humor without realizing it, and CPS will get sent to his house to see if he is smoking pot.
Yeah, see I work for the Canadian version of CPS, CFS, so the thing is, I'm already in the room with him. And also we do not care about people smoking pot. It is not a thing.
-
I don't mean I don't care about if my kids or the kids I care about and if they smoke pot - I mean CFS doesn't care if a kid or parent smokes pot. We are basically powerless to do anything about it in my location. I was really keen on decriminalization back when I was not directly in the trenches. Now I've seen enough young kids putting themselves and others in danger because of getting high on weed and I wish maybe things weren't so slack, at least when it comes to kids who arn't old enough or who don't have the capacity to understand risk.
-
For instance, I am not wrapped around the axle about mild violence or nudity, but I have to watch out for bad language because their language deficits are such that they'll repeat words and phrases with no regard for meaning or context. Most seven-year-olds get that you don't drop F-bombs in front of Grandma, but Danger Boy doesn't have that level of social awareness yet. So I have to be more vigilant than other parents.
We showed them the first half-hour of Star Wars for the first time last night. Pedro cried. It was awesome.
-
Oh, no I know that. I work in support of folks with different values from my own and give them respect all day long after all.
What I was asking was where do you see the brain rot? Is it the particular show and its content, or is it all TV in general? I genuinly haven't had any need to put significant thought into cartoons and their content. I was recently thinking about how that will have to change once I pop one out, and how many terrible cartoons appeal to little kids that are just brain numblingly awful, and how many cartoons appeal to hubby and I that are full off all sorts of violence and terribleness that I haven't considered when it comes to impressionable minds.
When it comes to parenting young children and TV, I believe less TV overall is best. When it comes to babysitting on the other hand, I'm all for bringing on the TV, especially when the kid is in an environment that isn't otherwise suited to his needs (ie at the home of two DINKS like my hubby and I, who have no toys). To our credit I think the TV only came on after the dog had been exhausted.
-
Dual Income No Kids? Guessing.
I'm sure the dog was grateful for the respite. When strange kids come to visit I have to keep an eye on our dog. She's very patient and tolerant of most kinds of poking, but when she's been pushed beyond her limit she gets snappy. That and when someone grabs her on both sides of the head and tries to kiss her on the muzzle. One of my daughters friends learned a very startling and scary lesson about the dog's boundaries. No blood, but teeth touched face. Normally she will retreat to a closet when she's had enough, but the kids had decided to cut off the escape routes.
-
I just try to keep my kids from watching stuff that's annoying or in which the main characters are overtly mean. I despise Spongebob with a fiery passion.
I also try to steer them towards things that are fun for me to watch along with them, so Phineas and Ferb are the big hits around here lately. My kids don't watch a lot of long-form TV but they love short (5 - 7) minute spots, so for a while the classic Looney Toons were a thing. Lots of violence and not a lot of education but it sure as hell made them laugh.
Amazingly, Danger Boy's favorite show right now is Mr. Bean. I cannot believe I have the good luck to have a kid who is begging to watch decades-old BBC specials. There was an animated series which he doesn't give two shits for, he wants the real deal.
The fun part, for him, is yelling at the TV. "MR. BEAN! Don't put your HEAD in the TURKEY! OH NO! MR. BEAN, YOU ARE STUCK IN THE TURKEY!" etc.
-

That child is lucky to have learned that lesson the easy way - I hope she has the sense to generalize it to all dogs. No one of any age should ever do that to a dog that they don't know extremely well.
-

I was once thrown out of a dorm lounge for not being able to let go of my rage that an episode of Friends ripped that bit off without a whit of shame.
I just could not let that shit go.
Good Lord, Friends was a fuck*ng bad television show. Well, it was bad at being a situation comedy, anyway. As some kind of rare half-hour-once-a-week soap opera running in stealth mode as a goddamned sitcom, I guess it was less bad but holy shit. Holy shit, did I hate that goddamned show.
-
I try to be fair, but it's my opinion that most television shows suck so hard. There are some cartoon shows that I have loved through the years, but in my opinion Looney Tunes are the best cartoons ever made. Rivaled closely by Tom and Jerry.
-
When I think about TV and its effect on me growing up, I am surpized not only at the profoundness of the messages I absorbed, but also the surprizingly positive way it shaped me. I was watching the highly age inappropriate Kids in the Hall from when it first aired, and without a doubt, from it, I built a sense of tolerance and joyful accpetance of the LGBTQ community. I know it was TV for sure, and that show in particular, as both my parents are homophobic and I went to a Catholic school that was intensly anti-gay. I was also watching Phil Donahugh a lot and sponging up allsorts of jems there. I also strongly remember both Sesamie Street and Mr. Rogers looking through the screen at me and saying I was special and worthy, even though no one else in my life was doing that, and somewhere within me a kernal of self-esteem was planted. Likewise, I grew up in fairly intense isolation, but watching TV gave me a sense of the world and kept me company and gave me comfort. The TV was always on, and there was not much talking in my house, so it was a steady diet of the boob tube. I can't help but think that in some ways I turned out alright not inspite of TV, but because of TV.
-
hang on a sec i thought it was LGBTTQ*

Let's face it, there were a lot of typos in that last post. That's what happens when I post from work, on Internet Explorer.

Oh, my goodness. The documentary about the puppeteer who created Elmo, Kevin Clash, just hit Netflix Instant, and he says the exact same thing. Regardless of how you feel about the little red muppet with chronically bad pronoun use, it's a really interesting look at how the principal people behind Sesame Street reached out to a little black kid from Baltimore and quite literally changed his life.

Straight up made Pedro cry.
Me, I am *weeping* at Quantum Leap tonight. Seriously, why are the best episodes so heart-wrenching? As I posted on Facebook,
It's been so long since I've seen "The Americanization of Machiko" that I completely forgot how it ended. Darn near made me cry. #Quantum Leap Year
It is hard to believe how well this series has held up over almost two decades. It's just perfect, and Bakula is flawless as the world's most humble super genius. I haven't rewatched it in about five years, I'm so glad LFM posted something about Quantum Leap and Leap Year on Facebook today and inspired me to pull it up.
It's on Neflix, for those of you who haven't seen it. I think the first 3 and the last 3 episodes are disc-only, but there are tons and tons of great ones to choose from in between.
-
The final episode is one of the great guy-weepies of all time, right up there with Field of Dreams.
-
Never saw it, but I do like Dean Stockwell quite a bit.
-
The final episode is one of the great guy-weepies of all time, right up there with Field of Dreams Jurassic Bark.
FTFY.
-

My own fixit.
-
Apparently, the only movie that ever made my Dad cry was Rudy.

Sodbusters!

There isn't a baseball thread yet, so this is going here. Does anyone do the mlb.tv thing? And if so, did you end up running into weird blackout restriction changes in the middle of the season or anything like that? Luckily my team isn't included in my local blackout region but there was something about how that could change at any time. Any other common problems with the service?
-
I'm just getting caught up on Mad Men, currently near the end of the second season. The first couple episodes didn't really grab me and it took catching some later ones to get me hooked, but I'm hooked. Peter Campbell is a creepy fuck and I can't tell if it's just the character or the actor. Vincent Kartheiser really irritated me in Angel, too. Maybe if the guy grew some facial hair.
-
yeah that's all pete needs, a pervy mustache
-
I am in the same boat as you about Pete Campbell. Once you get caught up we will need to discuss the episode they aired on Sunday (Season 5, Episode 5). I can't say much without spoilers, so all I will tell you is that I got everything I wanted, but feel conflicted about it now that I got it. The writers are damn good.
-
I love this season, and I love Pete. A lot. He is just so great.
Is it because I secretly want to be married to a weird spoiled rich girl played by Alison Brie? Yes.

I was hoping to be caught up by this weekend, but I've actually been doing shit (taxes, working overtime, getting prints framed) so I doubt it. I'm gonna try though.

Jesus yes. Alison Brie. Oh yes.
But that's a perfectly good reason to hate him!
-
this season is super good so far, aside from john hamm's direcing during the premier. i love to hate pete, i can't bring myself to enjoy him any other way. good for lane is all i'm saying.
also alison brie is wins, and often the best part of community.

Gillian Jacobs has been remarkably funny this season too.
-
I really don't understand why I have so much sympathy for Pete. At this point I kind of hate all of the men but Pete.

Love me some Community.
Also, those two could make an egg sandwich anytime they want.

Took me a season to realize I like Game of Thrones. I should have waited until the series was over. Now I have to wait week-to-week like some 1980's time warp.
-

Yeah, still a creep. And deeply disturbed and unhappy. And a really good character. That's a great episode. And now that I know what you mean but getting everything you wanted, I'm curious as to why exactly you feel conflicted.
Also, because I'm totally in love with Annie Edison but can't stand Trudy Campbell (who reminds me of my most attractive yet most irritating ex-girlfriend), Alison Brie must be a pretty good actor.

It's that he got his comeuppance, kind of over and over again in this episode, and while he's read as snivelly and entitled until now and was in many ways due for a smack-down, the writer's crafted the episode in a way that hints at an identity crisis for him and the potential for him to flilp toward the sympathetic.

Been watching a lot of Bob's Burgers. They're doing the Simpsons thing in reverse: they started out with extreme, unlikable characters, and they seem to be slowly becoming real people.
Or at least, there was one episode (where Bob works a second job so they can afford to throw Tina a birthday party) that really did it for me.
I also watched every episode of Adventure Time. So good!
-

Interesting way to put it. They do seem to be adding some dimension to the characters. I hope they keep it around a while instead of giving Seth McFarlane another half-hour to do the same exact thing over again. I mean, I'm not as anti-Family Guy as LFM, but jeez, why do we need three clones of it?
-
I love Bob's Burgers, and Adventure Time is also great. I really thought Bob's Burgers would be cancelled after the first season, so I'm really happy they kept it around.
-
I'm annoyed that my cable company kept me from seeing Bob's Burgers/Simpsons/etc last night. They say you can watch TV online, but it has the same 1 week delay that Hulu does. Boo.
-
dang if i missed out on my sunday night stories i'd be mad as heck at comcast. mad men & game of thrones are too good not to watch the night they air
-
Did I already ask if anyone else is watching Once Upon a Time?
-
This season of Mad Men keeps getting better and better.
HBO, AMC et al need to invent a service where I can pay them a lump or monthly fee to watch certain shows live. If I could see Mad Men live, or pay for an immediate download, I would gladly do it. Instead I mooch off of friends with cable.

I local brewpub shows a lot of the really good cable series for free. But I usually end up spending ~$15 each time anyway so it makes sense just to get cable and a DVR.
-
Holy shit was Mad Men good last night.
-
man, it is like all of the media I consume had a meeting and said, "maybe Dan doesn't understand how shitty women have it in this world. We should try to make him overwhelmed by shame-nausea every night of the week."
-
Well, not that there isn't a lot of progress still to be made, but a lot of progress has been made since 1966... right?
What else were you watching?
-
When Lane got in the Jag, I hit pause on the DVR and said betcha five bucks that jag doesn't start but she didn't take me up on it
-
ME TOO!
-
This whole season of Mad Men has done something magnificent when it comes to showing tragedy from within. No words needed. Peggy's face when Don takes her hand, Joan's face when she's undoing her dress, Lane's face when he sees the car. Such epic emotions, yet so contained.
Only one episode left, and it feels like their season has barely begun. Only two more seasons.
-
season two of game of thrones just ended, and the fifth book has been out a while now. is anybody here watching or reading? i would enjoy discussion threads if there's any interest.
-
I like Girls very much and I do not care who knows it.
-
Good for you for being an unabashed fan of something terrible. Myself, I like Ke$ha.
-
I've watched Game of Thrones all the way up to season 2, episode 9. I haven't yet acquired the 10th.
I don't think I can wait for another whole year for the next season. I may start reading the books. But since the author hasn't finished those yet, I'll be in the same situation all over again.
-
i read the first book before the first season, and the second and third before the second season started. now that it's over, i've started from the books over before i read the third and fourth, and i'll probably read the fifth before next season begins. what excites me about the show (besides the acting and production) is how it's different from the books. sometimes the changes fit seamlessly and other times i'm disappointed, but it's an added layer of thrill.
-
We have been watching Game of Thrones here as well. We've seen the first three so far. I haven't read the books, but Pedro has, so he's been filling me in on the stuff I'm missing as the show progresses. As a result, it takes us an hour and a half to two hours to watch each episode due to frequent pausing-and-explaining.
I can't keep the character and tribal names straight, so I make up my own. Lord Sisterfucker, Queen Slutbags, Blondie McBlondsalot, the Klingon Cherokees (and their leader, Silent Cal), Sir Dances-with-Wolves, Prince Weasel#####.
-
don't put him (or yourself) through that, read the books. the first season follows along pretty directly, but the second season veers quite a bit. you'll still be surprised and pleased.
-
Oh, he enjoys it. It sounds annoying as hell, but actually we both really like it. We don't just talk about plot points; I speculate about the potential ramifications of a particular action and he coyly tries to avoid confirming or denying my suspicions. It's fun. It's a chance to engage in conversation instead of just passively zoning out in front of the telly at the end of the day.
Also, dude, I have so many books on my plate right now that I just had two e-books expire from my reader before I could finish them. One I was 60 pages shy of finishing and the other I didn't even start. And I got the first book of the Millennium Trilogy today, no way am I going to start yet another series right now. No frickin' way.
'Sides, the next series (after Larsson's) is The Hunger Games. I have decided to read the books first and see the movie after, and I would like to see the films before my children are old enough to make fun of me for not having watched them.

I say the thing about Game of Thrones that I make fun of people for saying about Mad Men. Those characters are just TOO MEAN and I can't enjoy watching it.
After the season finale of Girls, I am restating my opinion. I love that show, and I don't care who knows it. And why would I, when it is clearly a superbly made show?
-
ive been slowly making my way through ST:DS9(insta-view on netflix).
-
Are there enough of us watching/reading Game of Thrones to have a dedicated thread about it? I'm up to ep6s1 and we watch about 3 eps a week, so I should be caught up to the current season fairly soon.
-
I watched the entire second season of Louis in 2 days. That is a very good show. I especially liked the part where he fucked Joan Rivers. And the scene where he talked about shitting 4 donuts was hilarious.

Love Louie. Did you see the one where he takes the kids to see his Great-Aunt? It's the first one I ever saw. It reminded me so much of Achewood.

Yes, I watched that episode last night.
-
I could go on about GoT endlessly I think, so I'd be down with a dedicated thread. I've seen both seasons and am about 83% done with the second book according to my Kindle. At this point my plan is not to read ahead - we'll see how that goes once I actually run out of book and Season 3 remains months away. I was glad I hadn't read ahead with book 2 though; the fate of Bran and Rickon had me twisting in the wind for a week and going back and forth in discussions with other watchers.
-
i've read book three, and am rereading from the start before i crack book 4, due to timing circumstances
the author used to write TV episodes, so it must have been a fair challenge to keep, translating from one to th eother.
-
Was there a consensus on whether you should read the books before you start watching the show in this case?
-
My friends and I watched the first series together and loved it, they read the books and then watched the second and were really down on it whereas. I didn't read the books but liked the second series alright. Did the same thing with girl with the dragon tattoo movie actually. I think it might be my new policy.
-
Something about reading a story before seeing it onscreen seems to make people pickier. I think its because you invest yourself in picturing things in a certain way; hearing the characters' voices, seeing their appearance, envisioning the scene etc. You don't need to make that investment as a viewer, and when you read the story later its interesting to see how the screenwriter adapted the story (although maybe that makes it less immersive?)
-
ive been slowly making my way through ST:DS9(insta-view on netflix).
I rewatched that on DVD a few years back. It's definitely much better that way than on syndicated TV where you miss episodes and they aren't necessarily in order.
-
I have also been watching Louie, intermittently plowing through on the DVR. I think the season one finale, where he goes to the nightclub, is the best so far.
-
Was there a consensus on whether you should read the books before you start watching the show in this case?
My question on that was in re: The Hunger Games. There was no consensus on that. I am not planning on reading these books, pretty much ever. Pedro has read them and he says while the series leaves out some small details, it's involved enough without those details that I won't get much more in the way of plot or character development from the books.
Apparently, G.R.R.Martin was tired of writing for TV, so he decided to write a series of books filled with so much sex, violence, and horror that it couldn't possibly be put on the air. So he published the first book and within weeks was contacted by HBO. Apparently after he stopped facepalming and looked at the string of zeroes on the check he decided that writing for TV wasn't that bad after all.
So who's gonna start this thread? And can we agree to keep spoilers limited to Season 1 until everyone (meaning me) has had a chance to get caught up?

I just started and I'm already inclined to agree with you. I am also obsessively trawling youtube for episodes of QI (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QI).

I'm all caught up on Breaking Bad now. So good. What a compelling, smart show.

Crap. Can't believe I missed this. Netflix streaming has only the first three seasons. Maybe they'll do it again. I'll keep checking.
I am getting to the point where I'd rather watch streaming TV episodes than movies. In one season, you get the plot and character development of a 12 hour movie, conveniently broken up into 12 one hour bites of entertainment, most of which have a neat plot twists resulting in thrilling cliffhangers.
-
netflix just added season 4 like last week, or just before the season premier, or something. season five is shaping up nicely.
-
I'm gonna wait for season 5 to hit Netflix then watch it in one weekend. That seems to be my modus operendi for these kind of shows.
-
season 5 is going to be split into two parts of eight, with like ten months between them. they're unofficially calling the second half 'season six' due to how they're scheduling the filming. at that point, you may as well wait until the whole series is on netflix.
-
That's the strategy I used with The Sopranos. 8 years of drama compressed into a couple weeks.
This weekend I discovered The Thick of It. It uses the same theme and actors as the movie In The Loop.

Been on a Charlie Brooker kick lately. Finished up what there is of A Touch of Cloth (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qEjvI910kA), and am checking out The Black Mirror (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ke5AKVtvkdc).

Great Teacher Onizuka is excellent. It is pretty bonkers how OK they are with having so many jokes about adult men wanting to screw 14 year old girls.
When I was in high school I was extremely worried that I would grow up to be really into high school girls. Surprise surprise, now they look like children to me. No interest whatsoever. It's funny to think how "mature" and sexy I thought they looked when I was that age.
I also just saw the first episode of Space Dandy, the new show by Shinichiro Watanabe. Pretty funny! Pretty cool. Interested to see where it goes.

It's in my TiVo but I haven't watched it yet because I found the trailer really underwhelming. But Watanabe.
Also, I'm back. Currently skimming every single post since my last visit in October.

Just downloaded a coupla eps. from HBO's "True Detective". From what I gather there's a Lovecraft/Robert Chambers vibe going on, hope it's worth the hype.
http://www.hbo.com/true-detective (http://www.hbo.com/true-detective)

i've really been enjoying true detective. the pacing is slow as molasses, appropriate for the setting, and the characters and performances are rich and top-drawer. it's kind of hard to believe that in 20 years mcconaughey has never had a regular tv series role, and what with him killing it in the movies this year, he's also got this one going? a dude has a major renaissance, it's cool to watch.
-
Thank must not be the Mcconaughey (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000190/) I was thinking of.
Nope, never mind, it is. I could have sworn he was in something. Clearly, Choop was right.

OH MY GOD this anime I am watching "Welcome to the NHK," is so awesome. It's about a 22 year old college drop out and recluse (hikikomori) trying to get back out into everyday life. Really awesome. Definitely silly sometimes, but for example, this scene I just watched was about him trying to go back to school but starts having a panic attack. This is so, so good.
-
I have been intending to check "Welcome to the NHK" for ages now, will do it most promptly (speaking of anime, "Psycho-Pass" is really cool, heady mix of Blade Runner, William Gibson and assorted cyberpunk goodiness).
And yeah - "True Detective" is the shit. 3rd episode had mucho delicious dialogue. I'm "hooked", as the parlance goes.
-
I'm an episode behind on Space Dandy. I'm liking it more but still with they'd brought in Yoko Kanno.
-
Maybe the best yet. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpctdMcHhUw) This show has the coolest animation.
My roommate's girlfriend poked her head in and yelled "DON'T BECOME A WEEABOO" at me, so you can tell she's really fun to have hanging around the house.
I didn't realize this at first, but it's kind of like an anime Groundhog Day.
-
Oh yeah, that is a good one.
I just started this one (http://www.animeplus.tv/hoozuki-no-reitetsu-anime) which is a silly series basically about middle management in Hell. I am now in the middle of like three different things and can't figure out a good way to keep track. First world problem, I know.
-
Did somebody just say "weeaboo?" 'cause I think I just heard somebody say "weeaboo." (http://pbfcomics.com/71/)
-
You Might Be A Weeaboo If... (http://www.tofugu.com/2012/11/29/weeaboo/)

Yeah Inev, I'm pretty sure she wanted you to spank her.

oh man, inev, i am glad you mentioned tatami galaxy. I am watching now because of the trailer you posted, and I haven't loved a cartoon this much since basically FLCL.
-
yeah it is the BEST. This director has made some other stuff which I have not checked out yet.
-
What else? I think there was one thing I looked at and it wasn't as awesome, but I can't remember now.
-
oh man, inev, i am glad you mentioned tatami galaxy. I am watching now because of the trailer you posted, and I haven't loved a cartoon this much since basically FLCL.
That is some damn strong praise by comparison.
-
I'm only on like episode 2 (been busy of late), but so far it's been beautifully wacky and unhinged. I only wish I knew japanese because keeping up with the insane pace of dialogue via subs—all while trying to appreciate the insanity that's going on onscreen—can prove difficult.
And now, Doc, I'ma go listen to the FLCL soundtrack and weep for a lost childhood. God damn that show was beautiful.
-
My roommate and I tried FLCL yesterday and were not getting it. I will try another ep soon.
-
My roommate and I tried FLCL yesterday and were not getting it. I will try another ep soon.
I like the soundtrack but don't like the show. My understanding is that's kind of a parody but was mostly industry people blowing off steam and has lots of in-jokes that take a real otaku to fully appreciate.
-
I always just saw FLCL as a lighter take on the themes Gainax took a sledgehammer to in the EVA series: a buncha weird ***** adventures as a metaphor for adolescence. Then again, my love of that show might be just the result of a right-time right-place kinda thing.
-
That last one-take shot in "True Detective"'s last ep. Oohh yeah:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_HuFuKiq8U (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_HuFuKiq8U)

yeah goddamn, that's an incredible shot on a fantastic show. the wife and i are loving every second of it, and we just sat there agog during that scene.
-
I posted this on my tumblr (hence the op-ed-like tone, you know, like you're talking to no one and everybody at the same time). Since we had mentioned True Detective, here it goes:
Behind all the feminist squawking about “unidimensional female characters” in True Detective, it’s easy to spot the real issue: the show’s protagonists are not females. It is simple as that, after all, Commander Speece is very unidimensional too; so was Reggie Ledoux, detectives Papania and Gilbough, Rev. Tuttle, Ginger and all the rest of the cast, males and females, since, well, they are not the protagonists. Not everybody gets to be on the limelight, fellas (and dames). That something as simple as this can be overlooked only confirms to me that Gender Studies are the bane of critical thinking and artistic appreciation.
In True Detective, a female brothel owner verbally stumps detective Marty Hart re: his views on prostitution; a young female law intern shows agency while simultaneously giving Marty Hart a piece of her mind regarding men (“liars and bullies” is the gist of it as I remember it, and considering Marty’s actions, it wasn’t a far-fetched assessment), and in more than one occasion his wife Maggie shows a level of maturity, intelligence and capacity for empathy that her husband can’t even begin to imagine (her speech about having had to “navigate brute men who thought themselves clever” comes to mind — so much for not even being a protagonist, eh). But of course that is not enough. There’s a scene where Marty Hart barges into the hospital where Maggie works. The scene is played with Hart as a bumbling, sniveling brat caught red-handed and pleading for a second chance, while Maggie, shown fully in control of her environment and her feelings, proceeds to trounce him verbally, her stethoscope dangling angrily for her shoulders (“See? She’s not only a woman and wife: she’s a professional working on a physically and mentally demanding area!”). She is completely in charge, the perfect image of righteous anger. I can only imagine Nic Pizzolatto writing this scene, striking his keyboard excitedly, pumping his fist in the air and celebrating what he thought would be a clear-cut display of even-handedness. Poor bastard. It will never be enough — even if the rumours are confirmed and the detectives for the next season are females, it will not be enough.
The only thing I take from all the rethorical cesspool I’ve seen on tumblr regarding this subject is that perhaps you shouldn’t expect Proust-like depth from your weekly serial entertainment to begin with.
p.s.: It’s hard for me not to cringe and roll eyes at all the T&A going on in this series, but it’s not due to any prefab notions about power dynamics between the sexes: it’s just that I like to think myself above such easy baiting of my lower instincts (the thing is: the last I heard, sex was still selling).
-
the last I heard, sex was still selling

I predicted many years ago that Hollywood would eventually produce a really well made porno. You know, with high production values, a good script, decent budget, artful direction, etc... When I first had the thought I envisioned that it would star Madonna, so it must have been all the way back in the 80s when the thought occurred to me. Game of Thrones is the closest to what I had in mind that I have seen so far.

What I liked about the True Detective finale was that in the end the show went just human. They took a character that was trying (too hard) to be a brain in a vat, put him through the wringer, got him on the other end with something actually felt. Cohle had a near-death experience and found hope. It happens, bitches. It happens all the time.
It doesn’t matter that the Cohle he was before would have scoffed at the notion of such a paradigm shift. Experiences change people’s wiring and that past Cohle is no more. This is very much in tune with Kierkegaardian notions about the intransferability of personal experience and Wittgensteinian notions about the inexpressability of the innermost levels of perception. No one from the outside can judge faith (like the materialist Cohle did in ep.02, taking potshots at the Christians in the revival tent).
So yeah, pretty cool show overall. Gonna miss those two knuckleheads.

Is everybody watching Cosmos? With your kids, if you have 'em?
-
I wasn't that bowled over by Cosmos. All the sciencey people in my Twitter feed were ecstatic, so I guess there is something wrong with me. I love the guy when he is on other shows, but this just didn't do it for me.
-
I won't say I was bowled over by it, because the outer space special effects are old hat by this point (good lord we are soooooooo jaded), and there wasn't a whole lot in it I didn't already know. But my girls enjoyed it, and I want to make it a regular Sunday night thing with them. If it gets some people interested in science, I'd say that's a good thing, and maybe it'll help stem the tide of intentional dumb-assedness in this country.
-
I agree with that, and the problem may be that I am not the target audience, you know? Also I have to confess that astronomy is one of my least favorite sciences. Big shiny things far far away that we will never get to see close up, whatever.
I might give it another chance. I figure the first episode might not be representative, because my reaction was "they did the whole history of the universe, so what's left for the rest of the series?" So maybe that episode was more vague and introductory than it will be later?
-
I'm not bowled over by it either. I didn't watch it actually, but I am bowled over by the fact that it's gotten the right wing religious ninnys all in a stir. Good Job, NGT! Here's an actual quote from a Facebook friend "100 billion years ago on March 15th the milky way was born? Nonsense!"
-
Yes, I think the first episode was rather introductory. I gather the subsequent episodes will go in depth on various topics, like the second one is going to look at cellular biology.
Paul, that is the problem, isn't it, that people who are virulently anti-science are just going to dismiss it out of hand. I'd like to think that if you really went through the process step by step to show how we reached these conclusions, people would understand it all, but at some point, even if they couldn't deny a certain factoid, they'd just say "The Devil put that there to deceive you!"
I took an astronomy class in college and really enjoyed it. What we've been able to figure out based on what little we can get through telescopes is rather astonishing.
-

I think this point of view is losing sway with the American public which is a relief. It's more of an amusing side show rather than a serious threat these days. The right wing is going to have to accept science if they intend to win anymore elections.
-
We have been persisting with Cosmos, and it was totally worth it for the whole thing in tonight's episode about Halley and Newton and the book about giraffe that no one wanted to buy.
-
where in heck were we just talking about archer?
i haven't watched last night's episode yet because reasons - one of which is rick and morty. i don't know how i missed the first few episodes, but i caught last week's in a rerun and was pretty much immediately hooked.
"don'i give it ... don't give it a second thought"
-
cans for days dude, i couldn't catch who they were beating up when i just straight watched it. that ep was really funny.
-
That show rocked really hard! Thanks for turning me on to something new.
-
I haven't been watching since the episode with cronenberg Morty, which was pretty goddamn dark to begin with. Better get caught up.
-
Legend of Galactic Heroes. Whoaaa. Someone somewhere described this as a grittier Star Wars. Two huge galactic powers fighting epic battles in space. Moral grey area, unwilling warriors, politics, intrigue, kind of bland 80s animation. Right now, 10 or so episodes in, an invading force finds themselves on the verge of letting an occupied planet starve to death because of a supply chain problem. Damn, this show is cool.

Has anyone seen a complete list of everyone who was on Colbert's farewell song last night?
Someone on Twitter said, "If there was a Guinness record for most random celebrities in one place, Colbert just shattered it."
-
Answering my own question: http://www.slate.com/blogs/browbeat/2014/12/19/colbert_report_finale_annotated_list_of_everyone_who_appeared_in_sing_along.html
-
I regret not making the time to watch that show more often lately.
Also, I see from the annotated version that Steven Pinker was on it. So now I can also regret that I once turned down the chance to write a dissertation with someone who would become famous enough to be on the Colbert finale.
-
I love that song by the way. I listen to the original version (http://youtu.be/cHcunREYzNY) from time to time. I first came to know about Vera Lynn via Pink Floyd (http://youtu.be/_tecWmThkrY), but it wasn't until many years later and the internet did I find out who she was.
Johnny Cash among others does a pretty sweet version (http://youtu.be/KodNFsP6r88) too.

Right before i moved to NJ, I was starting to become friends with an acquaintance who happens to be a beautiful woman who loves music and anime. She told me about her favorite show ever. I decided I should watch it, and I told her on this visit that I was close to the last episode. She not only doesn't remember that conversation, she also said she has never seen the show. I must have remembered wrong (this is totally possible, so many anime shows have similar un-rememberable names) but I did a bad job of pretending I wasn't disappointed.
Anyway, anime nerds love Steins;Gate and it is not that good. It drives me nuts when sci-fi-ish things set up rules for how the sci-fi-gadget works but then don't follow their own rule.
-
I was once a nerd and as a consequence there were people in my social orbit who would host anime movie marathons. I couldn't get into it to save my life so I asked the most sane person in the room why they liked anime.
"Movies in American theaters are just too overtly artificial. Boy likes girl/world is going to end/a group of dumbasses get up in hijinks/etc. At least with anime there is no pretense. It's cartoons about characters with superpowers and they do shit with their powers. That's it. That's the plot. Sometimes the superpower is that some evil gangster murdered their mom, but it is all out there in the open and no one is pretending."
I got what the dude was saying, but at the same time he's turning his back to fictional theater in favor of something so fictional they had to make it a cartoon.
TLDR: ACAP does not get anime and no number of girls in costumes will get him to attend their conferences.
-
Yeah, I think that is why most people like anime, and that is why it's hard to find anime I like.
I'm glad to be on the side of Hiyao Miyazaki-- he said the problem with anime is that it's made by people who love anime.
My experience so far is that with every show, there is some weird/creepy/too-cutesy aspect of it that you kind of have to get over, no matter how awesome the show is. It's hilarious but there are lots of up-skirt shots, or it's a cool sci-fi show with really annoying music, or it's about a dude with depression but sometimes little cartoon monster guys dance around him symbolically. I could do without that stuff. Weirdly, the two shows I've watched that didn't have that weird aspect you had to get over are controversial in anime circles for being "weird" or "too serious" or having "strange animation." Who knows.
While I was in St Louis my old roommates and I Consumed a Substance and watched Sailor Moon and I was yukking it up, so clearly I just need to get over my hangups and watch whatever goofy shit I want.
-

I have to know what these two shows are which are so disorienting that they need a sentence with the word "weird" in it three times.
I can never figure out what to say when people ask if I am into anime. I seem to spend a fair amount of time watching Japanese cartoons. But they are never sci-fi or have up-skirt shots or characters with superpowers so I feel like we are not talking about the same thing and it would be misleading to say 'yes.'

-
Hey, I didn't know that was available in English. Do you actually watch it?
Anyway, yeah, that is exactly the question. Obviously it's Japanese animation, so yes. But when Americans talk about anime, I feel like that is not what they are talking about, they are talking about a certain kind of anime.
-
Hey, I didn't know that was available in English. Do you actually watch it?
It used to be on Cartoon Network, and I did.

People complain a lot about the animation in Ping Pong (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcSuAhbtIFg) and Tatami Galaxy (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BcSuAhbtIFg), which I think have been my favorites.

Yeah, I kinda hate that too.

I'm not into Anime, but I'm also not a Japan-ophile. I don't know if that matters. I love cartoons so by rights I should love Anime, but I haven't seen any that made me want to watch more unless Totoro counts.

I haven't seen Ping Pong but I loved Tatami Galaxy. It is definitely not the style Americans mean by "anime." That's exactly what I mean - American fans are only interested in a certain subgenre of Japanese animation.
I like this one (http://www.crunchyroll.com/yamishibai-japanese-ghost-stories), where the stories are in the style of traditional Japanese ghost stories and the animation is a sort of homage to an old style of street storytelling using paper illustrations. Go show them that one if you want to piss them off.
-

I feel like there are some anime fans who are not particularly interested in Japan, but Inev could probably answer that question better. But if someone is mostly interested in those sci-fi type cartoons, there's not much Japan in those really, so they wouldn't have to be.
I think Totoro counts as anime for Americans just because the studio is so massively successful and respected, even though the style is different, but just liking Studio Ghibli movies does not make you an anime fan. You should definitely go watch the rest of those though. Spirited Away is my favorite.
-
I just watched a few seconds of Ping Pong and if that style turns people off, they really do have narrow tastes. It does not seem particularly radical, unless it changes later.
-
I had friends in college who were super into Anime. Their addiction arc always went something like: exposure to Americanized version Macross/*****ech, Gatchaman/Battle of the Planets, and Space Battleship Yamato/Starblazers;, curious expansion to voiced-over Japanese orginal series, Bleach, One Piece, Ranma 1/2; frenzied consumption of subtitled Japanese language videos; attempt to learn Japanese so they could "catch the nuances" (about 1/4 succeed and progress to complete Japanophilia); culminating in viewing ancient roots like 3 Tales, Astroboy, and Kimba the white lion. In the early 2000's my niece recapitulated that arc almost exactly (she did not succeed in learning Japanese), but with newer titles of course. She hasn't yet gone back to the early stuff though.
-
One thing a lot of anime dudes are into (if Reddit is to be believed) is "slice of life" anime. These are basically the Anime version of Friends, but with more Fake Philosophy and with Japanese tropes instead of American ones. I have not successfully watched any of these, so I don't have any more info than that.
-
My understanding is that this is true because such anime are generally about nubile young ladies. Or maybe that is what you mean by "Japanese version of Friends"?
-
yeah, it seems like there are often anime babes falling in love with nerdy anime guys.
-

I've seen Spirited Away. I was just keeping my comment simple.
Also this (https://flic.kr/p/riW6n).

When I was home over x-mas every single night my parents were in the living room watching a show where someone was being raped or tortured. Yeesh. When did everything get so damn dark? I can't find anything to watch that isn't a cartoon. I can handle reading really heavy/dark stuff, but watching it on TV and hearing screaming/crying is not my idea of fun.
My best bet is the goofy humor of cartoons on Adult Swim, or Archer (which is violent, sure, but is animated and funny). Maybe I need to catch up on Parks and Recreation and re-watch The Office.
-
I long ago gave up expecting to watch anything on American TV but I can't find anything to read either because I don't want to read about torture, the apocalypse, etc. It's also a big part of why I can't get anything published. This fashion has become ridiculous - now even middle grade books are about people dying and post-apocalyptic civilizations.
-
This is a really interesting problem to think about that you guys bring up, actually. Lots of times Spouse and I don't want to watch the murder/torture dramas nor do we have an interest in all the sex-farce sit-com stuff.
Where does this leave us? Watching Judge Judy lay teh beatdownz on the proles, usually.
Educational, yet strangely soothing... (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9nVfalp9j0I)
-

I suppose this is part of why I like Phineas & Ferb so much.
I have started watching "Louie" again, which is depressing in its own way, but much more relateable. I enjoyed Community but it's no longer on in syndication (though it's supposed to be on Yahoo with a new season soon).

My dirty secret is that Storage Wars
Ok, that's one of ours too. Who do you know? Please say it's not Hester. Barry would be pretty cool.
-
Let's see what's on my DVR as far as murder&mayhem go:
48 hours ✔
Alaska State Troopers ✔
America's First Sport: Lacrosse
Blue Bloods ✔
CSI ✔
Hawaii 5-0 ✔
How It's Made
Jake and the Neverland Pirates
Mythbusters
NCIS ✔
NCIS: LA ✔
NCIS: New Orleans ✔
Octonauts
PAW Patrol ✔
Person of Interest ✔
Phineas and Ferb
Pit Bulls and Parolees
Scandal ✔
The Mentalist ✔
Womens College Basketball: Pac-12 (4) ✔
Other than sports and kiddie shows, science shows (not listed at them moment: Nova, Cosmos) seem to be the only breaks in the People Being Awful To Each Other theme. Plus a show about dogs and redemption. There's something uplifting at least.
-
Anybody else watching Better Call Saul?
-
America's First Sport: Lacrosse
...
Womens College Basketball: Pac-12 (4) ✔
If I was going to check one of those two as "murder and mayhem," that's not the one.
-
DVR'd episode three of BCS, watching it tonight.
I find the Breaking Bad/Vince Gilligan internet fandom pretty awful, and I'd hate to see Better Call Saul turn entirely into a fanservice delivery engine for this demographic. I already feel like Mike and Tuco's prominent roles are veering the show into this territory. Let's just hope that not every episode has some kind of in-your-face 'easter egg' casting decision.
I'm also on the fence about the editing style and self-seriousness. It feels too much like Breaking Bad in tone -- I kind of want the writers/cinematographers/whatever to let the show breathe and become its own thing.
All of which is to say I'm not disliking the show so far, and I'm happy they're making it -- I'm just antsy to see which overall direction it takes as it continues.
-
If I was going to check one of those two as "murder and mayhem," that's not the one.
I...I have no explanation for the check mark there. Pac-12 basketball...those girls do go hard, though.
-
My dirty secret is that Storage Wars show because of knowings some of the people and all of the areas they cover.
Don't leave me hanging here.
-
I found out early and often that getting into a pickup game that involves D1 lady players is straight up putting your balls on the line.
I can't believe that there are people who watch golf on TV and wouldn't think to watch women's basketball.
-
I guess this show I've been watching is pretty popular, a friend just told me to watch it…anyone seen The Jinx? I don't know why, or if, I like it? That guy is real creepy.
-
Just watched the first season of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. Expectations were low. Thought it would be a low rent Sex in the City or Poor Man's Girls, but it was nothing like that. Very funny and completely weird.
-
Re-watching The Office, damn is this show good. I will go to bat for US Office over UK Office any day. You can like mean sad-sack Gervais all you want, but it ain't my bag.
Plus, Jim and Pam, goddamn.
-
I like the American version of the Office. I never watched it regularly, but I caught an episode on occasion. I've never seen the British version, but I have seen Gervais in other things and think he's pretty brilliant.
-
Netflix's Marvel's Daredevil was watchable, but lost a lot of steam towards the end. The Kingpin was a disappointment, lots of mugging I mean acting and then the whole thing just petered out.
-
Now I'm watching Silicon Valley. I enjoy it. It is not helping with my recent feeling that I should have pursued my technology interests. I don't think I would ever be a primarily technology guy, but it sure seems like being fluent in those skills can take you places.

Netflix's Marvel's Daredevil was watchable, but lost a lot of steam towards the end.
the movie critic on NPR the other day said essentially the same thing.
-
Jesus fuck, Paul. Thanks for the Bojack call out. I watch another couple of episodes every time the family goes do some shit I ain't into. Fuck yeah, Bojack.
Maybe I'll give it another try. I got through an episode and half and didn't feel compelled to pick it back up.
We're gradually working on cord-cutting -- my buddy made me get a souped up android box for the big TV and turned me on to hell of free streaming tv and movies. It gets variable results, but it's free after the initial investment, and when I'm paying upwords of $125 a month for DirecTV I can be a little patient with its occasional oddness.
We've started watching Justified -- I think we're 3 episode in, so we've got a ways to go. Seems pretty good so far, but they do the Elmore Leonard thing where the tone of dialog can be completely unrelated to the surrounding action. Guy's all smiling and talking about meat loaf or how their dads went to school together while they're swinging tire irons at each other's heads.
-
Oh man, the boyfriend who is actually 3 kids in a trench coat is too fuck*ng funny.
-
As a mean ass piece of work trying to reform, Bojack hossman is a goddam treasure.
They keep advertising it all over the place which makes me think it's not faring well in the ratings. I hope it finds an audience so they keep making it.
-
Jesus, the Inevs of the world are probably to blame, but I would rather watch 100 shitty sitcoms with canned laughter than any more shows that are focused on rape, murder, torture, etc.
Whenever I am home in NC someone is watching a show at full blast where someone is screaming in pain or anguish or crying. Whyyyy.
Give me the sad cartoon hoss. I can deal with the sad cartoon hoss having feelings about being sad, or a cartoon, or a hoss.
-
I'll take the sad cartoon hoss as well.
-
That cartoon hoss show is so good. My sister and I watched the whole second season this week and developed a whole ritual of weirdly wave-dancing around the room during the opening theme, singing along to the closing theme, and glancing at each other knowingly whenever there was a drug joke.
"I punched a mirror because I thought it was another dog and got scared" made me laugh so, so hard.
-
Rick and Morty hasn't reached Netflix yet, but I was able to find some episodes on YouTube. It's fantastic. I kinda love the big sister. She needs to get more airtime. The dad is hilarious too.
-
I don't know how awesome I think this final scene is (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2_Mn-qRKjA) because the scale for measuring it has yet to be invented.
Heyyyyy, are they trying to sneak a positive message in there.
Hey Paul, Adult Swim has every episode up (http://www.adultswim.com/videos/rick-and-morty/) for streaming. You haveta put up with commercials and it's SD but...free...all.
Fuck Yes. Thanks man.
Also, 53 signs your boyfriend is actually 3 children in a trenchcoat (http://www.buzzfeed.com/lukebailey/the-problems-with-your-boyfriends?utm_term=.kty55rjZpV#.rcE22xAZ1). Thanks Buzzfeed.
-
33. Sometimes, even though he’s clearly not laughing, you can hear muffled laughing.
-
I can't tell if I am into rick and morty. Hmm. Gonna keep watching, though. Almost done with Season 1.
Also, just now I was talking to my new roommate and her boyfriend and I burped mid sentence and they said YOU JUST DID THE RICK THING IN REAL LIFE!
I did not realize I was a disgusting pig. oops.
-
I'd go for Mr. Peanutbutter things.
I love Mr. Peanutbutter. He's a good dog.
-
Here's my wacky take on Vincent Adultman. BoJack is the only one who can see him for what he actually is, 3 kids inside a trench coat. It's like when someone posts some ridiculously stupid shit on Facebook that is patently obvious to you that it's some made up shit, yet everyone is commenting and liking the post as if it were true.

Anybody else watch "Better Call Saul"?
Hoboken Squat Cobbler, eh? Sounds like Vince Gilligan may be familiar with the particular fetish held by one Mr. Raymond Q. Smuckles.
-
Did anyone watch the new X-Files? I couldn't talk anyone else into watching with me, and turned out they were wise.

Yeah, I watched bits and pieces of a couple of episodes. I really don't remember the original being that hokey.

I don't recall the Hoboken Squat Cobbler. I liked Better Call Saul quite a lot. It's a step down from Breaking Bad, but I think that's the best show ever made so even a step down is still pretty dang good.

It's from the new season which just started a couple weeks ago.

Ah! I've just seen season 1 on Netflix.
-
I have not been watching much TV lately, aside from the sports. For a while there, I was keeping up with Community (in syndication) and Louie with great regularity, but that was when the kids were asleep by 9, and I could slink downstairs and watch a couple episodes. Now that the kids stay up later, any time I turn on the TV they're like "Ooh, what's this?" and want to sit down. There are numerous shows that sound interesting (Halt and Catch Fire, Mr. *****, Silicon Valley) but I just can't watch regularly. I do watch the Simpsons now and then and let the kids mostly follow along, but even that averages 1.5 kid-inappropriate jokes per episode.
The good news is that there's ample kids TV that is actually good. We quite enjoyed the recent ending of Gravity Falls. And I've started watching Adventure Time; that show is deeply weird, but has a ton of heart, and also John DiMaggio.

AT is amazing!
-
Carlos, Adventure Time is excellent. One of the former writers created a show called Steven Universe that is also deeply wonderful.
I like Silicon Valley but there are a lot of anal sex jokes.
New Venture Brothers episodes are great. I wasn't sure about the last season but this one is nailing it.
-

I hear many good things about Steven Universe, but I also hear you're better off watching it from the beginning, so I haven't picked it up yet.
There's also a lot of controversy over fan "ownership" of the show, and what groups have the "right" to be fans and such. Not that this should keep me or anyone from watching it, but it's a thing that makes me go "THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS."
-
I don't know how you feel about either of these comics, but this (http://comediansincarsgettingcoffee.com/garry-shandling-its-great-that-garry-shandling-is-still-alive) is the most poignant thing I've seen in recent memory.
-
Unbreakable Kimmie Schmidt?
I've given it a 5 episode Netflix test-run and I think...this is gonna be OK.
I mean, shit, anyone can put up with 10 seconds of anything, right?
It's in the top tier of Netflix shows.
-
I just plowed through the first season of "The Good Place" and am starting season 2. If you are not familiar, watch it from the beginning before anyone spoils it for you.
-
I've made it to the last 5 episodes of Breaking Bad, but the last couple of seasons are one helluva trudge for me. I've come around to agreeing with the Skyler character's opinion from earlier in the show and been wishing the cancer would come back and off Walt, the quicker the better for everyone he's apparently determined to drag down with him.
I mean, the quality of the writing and acting and the critical praise for it is deserved, in my opinion. But the emotional and ethical heart of the show just keeps getting deeper, darker and more repulsive.
I'm tempted to skip to the last episode to see how/how many of everyone gets deaded and call it good enough.
Yeah, it's mighty good but it's mighty dark too.

I loved that show, until the last episode. I’ve never heard anyone agree, but I think it’s sappy bullshit (though maybe dark sappy bullshit?). I’d love to hear what you think.
-
I can't watch it. Everyone is just too awful.
-
Finished off the last episode of Stranger Things 2 last night.
That was satisfying.
I didn't like it as much as the first season. They had too much money for special effects this time. But still the only American TV show I've made it through two seasons of since... I can't even remember.
-
If you already agree it only gets worse! Seriously, fuck that show.
-
Non-spoiler The Good Place highlight: Tahani's American accent. "Pass the NASCAR ketchup! I want a bottle of corn syrup and a scooter so I can ride around the mall."
-
Anybody else watch Shameless? Just finished Season 8 last night and facing a long drought until the new season...
-
Did you finish breaking bad?
-
Seriously I LOVED that show til the last episode which made me hate it. Maybe I’m an idiot and everyone else said it was great. Thanks for sort of agreeing!
-
It's in my Netflix queue but I'm not sure how serious I should take it.
Worth the dive?
Fuck fuck fuck yes.
-
Anybody watching Baskets?
-
I keep trying to get to it because it's been highly recommended.
Too much media, too little free time.
Plus, I'm in the middle of series 3 for Peaky Blinders and those murderous fucks have my attention.
Watched a couple of those, seemed more intense than what I wanted at the time, but looked great.
-

I watched the first 7 on Netflix. About to see season 8 soon. It's not a perfect show, but I enjoy it. Also, lots of titties, which is nice.
-

I loved it. Admittedly, I am a sucker for a well placed technical set up for a big hit. It's very Charles Bronson, The Mechanic in that respect.

I got real bored with that one by the end. Those murderous fucks rank very high on the poor impulse control scale.

Season 8 is good. Ian's plotline is stretching it a little, but Frank, as always, is amazing. Frank goes straight. For a while.

Frank goes straight. For a while.
Frank always has an angle.

Anyone watching "Ugly Delicious?" It's basically Lucky Peach in TV show form. They owe a debt to Bourdain, for sure. But it's quality stuff.
Also, Rosio Sanchez from the taco episode is my girlfiend now. (Neither she nor my wife is aware of this, but it's true.)

If she's imaginary girlfriend material I guess I should check her out.

I WILL FIGHT YOU FOR HER PAUL, DON'T TEST ME

Okay, okay, she's yours. I just meant, it's probably a pretty good show, right?

oh yeah totally

Season 5 of Bojack streams today. Diane has short hair. (https://youtu.be/IW3T7GEHs_8)
-
I started the first episode this morning, watched up to the title sequence, just to make sure it was there. Guess I know what I'm doing this weekend.
-
Also, pretty sure the new season of The Good Place starts next Friday. As before, if you're not familiar, avoid spoilers and watch it from the very beginning.
-
Yay, I brought good news to the board!

So great. Watched seven episodes tonight.
-
Somehow or other I have gotten drawn in to the new NBC show "Manifest," which wants to be "Lost" so badly it hurts.
Obviously I have found the overall story compelling enough to watch the first two episodes. But it's so freaking melodramatic, and I'm worried at the end it's going to be some big religious thing.
-
Has anyone watched Maniac? I've watched most of it and have really mixed feelings.
-
I watched the first two or three episodes of Maniac then stopped. Everybody at my work loves Izard but I thought the first season was boooooring
