I just found out that I'm going to be on Jeopardy. I supposed to be in LA for filming on 2/4.
Woo frikking HOO!
-
If this doesn't deserve a new Title of the Week for you I don't know what does.
-
If this doesn't deserve a new Title of the Week for you I don't know what does.
May I suggest "Mr. Guy", as (a) they provided Trebek's snappy wardrobe for many years, back in the moustache days, and (b) come on, it's Mr. Guy.
-
Egad! That's seven kinds of rad, at least. Do tell when it's going to be on TV.
-
Promise me that if you get a Daily Double in a category you're really good at, you'll shout "Bet the farm, Alex!" I've always wanted to do that.
-
Mega Congrats! Let us know when we should have our VCRs ready...Does this mean that the show you appear on will definitely be aired? I don't know how these things work, except that my grandparents were supposed to be on Phil Donahue for being married over 70 years and they taped it but it never aired. I can't imagine why Jeopardy! would do that, though. But I ramble.
So anyway. Let us know, and break a leg!
-
Someone has to have a capture card, and record and divx this for me to download! I never get to see Jeopardy let alone watch it when someone I kinda know is on it.
Damn, and I like Trebeck! He doesn't foil me!
-
"I'll take "Achewood Message Board Members" for $1,200, Alex."
*bling*
[ Jough ]
"Who is 'Someone Who's Rooting For Me To Kick Ass on Jeopardy'?"
CORRECT!
You can be assured that we will be giving you a new Jeopardy-themed title every few days until the show airs.
Congratulations, Monsieur August. Kick nine kinds of Canadian ass.
-
You had better kick some ass, August. I'll be rooting for you, and I will find a way to watch in this television-sparse dorm, so don't suck, okay?
If you have to totally blow a question, at least make your answer "the fermule" or "the man who invented Halloween."
-
At the very least, on one of your turns, try to pick "The c*ck Mightier" for some value.
Just to see what happens. They won't kick you off or anything.
Best of luck!
-
Hell Yeah August, that is totally bad ass.
BTW, How do you get to be on that show? I assume you have to qualify because you rarely see any dummies up there. I mean, most of the contestants seem to know their shit pretty damn well.
If I were on there it would go something like this....
I Lost On Jeopardy
Weird-Al-Yankovic
I was there to match my intellect on national tv
Against a plumber, oh, and an architect, both with a phd
I was tense, I was nervous, I guess it just wasn’t my night
[Alex Trebek] gave the answers
Oh, but I couldn’t get the questions right, -ight, -ight
I lost on jeopardy, baby (oooh)
I lost on jeopardy, baby (oooh)
Well, I knew I was in trouble now
My hope of winning sank
Oh, ’cause I got the daily double now
And then my mind went blank
I took potpourri for one hundred
And then my head started to spin
Well, I’m givin’ up Don Pardo
Just tell me now what I didn’t win, yeah, yeah
I lost on jeopardy, baby (oooh)
I lost on jeopardy, baby (oooh)
That’s right, Al--you lost. and let me tell you what you didn’t win: a twenty volume set of the encyclopedia international, a case of turtle wax, and a year’s supply of rice-a-roni, the San Francisco treat. but that’s not all. you also made yourself look like a jerk in front of millions of people. you brought shame and disgrace to your family name for generations to come. you don’t get to come back tomorrow. you don’t even get a lousy copy of our home game. you’re a complete loser!
Don’t know what I was thinkin’ of
I guess I just wasn’t too bright
Well, I sure hope I do better
Next weekend on the price is right, -ight, -ight
I lost on jeopardy, baby (oooh)
I lost on jeopardy, baby (oooh)
I lost on jeopardy, baby
GOOD LUCK AUGUST!!!
~Paul
-
I had a very starneg dream last night involving seeing an advert on TV where some kid was playing a game, and proceeded to shout out "I AM THE FERMULE".
What the fuck!?
Famous titties for $400
-
I agree with many of the above. Anybody can be wrong but when pushed into a must-answer situation it takes a strong mind to be spectacularly wrong.
"Who is Ron Jeremy?"
"What is So Long and Thanks for All the giraffe?"
-
Just hold your arms as far apart as they go and say "I told you backstage it's THIS big, Alex"
-
Good luck, Auggie. Don't pull a Clavin. The answer is always and never "Who are 3 people who have never been in my kitchen?".
I'll take "The rapist" for $200.
-
Who is gonna record this thing to CD for us? I'll burn and distribute, but I lack the ability to record it.
~Paul
-
Don't worry, peeps. I'll totally be DivXing thing thing.
Just let us know when it's going to air, AW.
-
Well I'm flying out to LA this afternoon and tomorrow's the big day.
Won't you all join me in fervently hoping that I do not humiliate myself on national television.
Thank you for your support!
-
Let the mojo making begin.
Mojo mojo mofo mojo.
-
Best of luck, August. You are going to kick ass.
-
God bless AugustWest.
-
Remember to answer in the form of a question!
-
Good luck and godspeed, fair August of West. I will be hoping for you with all the power of hope I am able to conjure up.
-
Remember, if you don't know the Final Jeopardy question, your response is "Who is Jough?"
Break a leg, and if you don't, break someone else's.

-
Oh, one more thing -- when you get back, don't tell us what happens! Or, if you do, clearly mark it as a spoiler so I don't accidently see it. I want to wait 'til the episode airs, and be uptight the whole time.
-
I have a terrible memory for detail, but in case it might help, he can have the parts of my brain that deal with linguistics and mammals and Japanese stuff. He has to give the mammals and Japanese back when he's done but he can keep the linguistics.
I want to know what happens before I watch the episode. I hate suspense.
-
Well, if he's back the next day, he didn't win.
In any case, if you get stuck on a literature, philosophy, or film question, feel free to use me as your "phone-a-friend" lifeline.
-
I'd donate the "worthless trivia that's no help in real life" part of my brain but then I'd just have the stem and maybe my eyes left so that might be bad for me.
Also, I still say the board needs [spoiler] tags.

I'm pretty sure he has to sign some legal stuff that pretty much forfeits winnings if he gives the ending away before the broadcast.

Things that People Say Taste Like Chicken but Don't
Oh, this would be a really great thread.
-
Well, I'm done and back at the hotel. Hellacious time getting here last night, but I made it. More on this later when I don't have to use this WebTV crap on the room TV.
Since you don't want spoilers, I won't tell you how I did. You'll have to watch on April 27 to see.
Now, what should I do with my free evening in LA? Any suggestions? I wanted to try an In and Out Burger and I'd kind of like to see Venice Beach. Stupid?
-
Now, what should I do with my free evening in LA? Any suggestions?
You should hook up with Limmo and Ash and go get ripped somewhere sleazy.
~Paul
-
Ash is right about using the In 'n Out website to find locations, and is worth checking out. Venice? If you're staying in Santa Monica, maybe. In Hollywood, no.
Oh, wait. Since the show is a Merv Griffin Production, you're probably staying at the B...... H...... In which case, there's an In 'n Out two miles west of you on Wilshire. Cut north from Wilshire at...I think it's Weyburn, there's a Hollywood Video at the corner. It'll be a mile up on your right.
I live about a mile beyond that, but I don't think I can break free tonight. Kid and all.
-
I'm at LAX.
-
I'm at LAX.
Those cheap fuck*ng bastards. Alright, let me think of something worthwhile for you to do.
-
Venice Beach is pretty near LAX. Go see the Venice canals too. Watch the sunset. Oh, I wish I could describe where this place is that you should go eat a taco for me... I wish I was there.
-
I'm at LAX.
Those cheap fuck*ng bastards. Alright, let me think of something worthwhile for you to do.
Nah, I'm paying for my own accomodations, so the word is THRIFTY.
Also, I have a car.
-
Well, that puts a different face on things, then. I thought guests were put up at Merv Griffin's fabulous Beverly Hilton. Never mind.
Check your email.
-
I don't know, it's not particularly balmy out tonight. The Pier is a small amusement park at the end of a, y'know, pier. The Third Street Promenade is a cool outdoor mall, but it would be lame to direct a visitor to a mall, wouldn't it?
On the other hand, you could go see:
Elvis Costello at the House of Blues
X at the Key Club
B.B. King at the Wiltern Theatre
Lewis Black ( from The Daily Show ) at the Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach.
If you're in the mood for nothing more than a movie, there's a place called The Bridge which is literally a mile north of LAX on Sepulveda, in the Howard Hughes Promenade. You could see Return of the King on an IMAX screen.
That's all I can do for ya, gotta go.
-
I think Limmo underestimates the fascination that just walking around any part of LA can have for those of us from back east. You could go indoors and see Lewis Black anywhere. Go outside and be in California!
And, the weather report says it's 62 in LA right now. This is not balmy? In February? Oh my, you Californians clearly have no idea how lucky you are.
-
I just want to say to Limmo and Ash i'm ashamed of you. If any of you fine people come anywhere near Houston I'll be there for you to show you a good time, help you in anyway I can, and try to make your visit as pleasurable as possible. That's a promise.
~Paul
-

~Paul
Well, I don't know about Ash, but I pretty much get one night a week to play. That's Thursday, when I get together with my bandmates to drink a bit and bump into our instruments. So my wife pretty much knows she's got the girl for the night.
Beyond that, I need, y'know, clearance. And if I'm going to say to her watch Audrey for me, I'm gonna go hang with someone I only know from the message board for that online comic strip that I post on, I'm gonna have to give her a little advance warning.
So, if any of you are going to be in L.A., I'd love to meet you, but I need a heads-up first, so I can clear the date and figure out something fun to do. This includes Jough, who, if he still plays guitar, is welcome to join in on drinking/instrument-bumping when he's out here in two weeks.
-
Hey, August, are you still going to be in LA tonight? This is my way of finding out if you've won or not without actually asking.
-
Yeah, I'm sorry LA people, I kinda came on strong. Not many people are as spur of the moment impulsive as I am. Also I got to thinking about it today and August didn't exactly pursue a meeting with you either. So, you know, he might have wanted to be left alone anyway for all we know. Shit he's probably right now laid up in a Chinese whore house snorting his Jeopardy winnings off an asian cuties ass. Or perhaps (more likely, but boring), since he's a midwesterner, he just didn't want to impose on you fellas and was waiting for an invitation.
~Paul
-
Hey, August, are you still going to be in LA tonight? This is my way of finding out if you've won or not without actually asking.
I think they tape those shows a week at a time. He could have won the whole week and still wrapped it up in one day.
~Paul
-
Ah, good call. Although do they still do the shows in quick five-time succession even with the same winner?
That sounds like more of an endurance test than a test of useless trivia.
-
OK gang, I'm back. Got in last night at around 1 a.m.
Sorry I didn't respond on Wednesday, but the 24 hours of TV internet service I paid $11 bucks for conked out after 45 minutes.
Lessee -- they do tape 5 shows a day on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If I had won the 5th show of the day on Wednesday (I didn't) they would have flown me back on Tuesday the 10th.
Limmo and Ash: I understand completely and am not offended or irritated in the least that you didn't drop everything on 5 minutes notice and drive an hour through heavy traffic just to entertain someone you've never met.
Although Limmo, I wish I had gotten your e-mail about ROTK on IMAX before I left the hotel room. I would have done that and it would have been better than the mundane crap I DID do.
Which is this:
I went to Venice Beach and walked around for about half an hour before it got dark. It was plenty of time to get the idea of the place. Bought some incense for myself, T-shirts for my daughters and a snow globe for my wife.
Next I drove around for a while and found an In-n-Out Burger (on Washington Blvd., in front of a Costco in Culver City). Maybe my expectations were too high, but I was underwhelmed. Not bad, but I was expecting wonderful, and it wasn't that.
It was dark by now and I didn't really know where else to go. I drove around for a while, basically on Sepulveda. I saw a Big Lots. Big Lots is one of my favorite places at home, so I stopped to compare closeout stores. The only thing different I could see was that Cali Big Lots sell wine and beer. Well, closeout wine and beer.
Big Lots was next to a Comp USA. I thought I might like to get a computer game I could play on the laptop while I waited in airports yesterday, so I walked over for a look. Couldn't really find anything (I was looking for something cheap and turn-based. Hard enough to find something turn-based.)
I noticed there was a Circuit City across the street, so I went over there. Worse selection than the Comp USA. They did have a PDA I was interested in, though. I almost bought it, but decided to do a little research first.
There was a mall across from the Circuit City, so I went in there and walked around for a while. I had some grilled Red Snapper and a Caesar salad at the food court. It was astoundingly good. Then I bought a silk shirt (well, silk blend) on clearance at Macy's. Ten bucks!
By this time it was late (8:15 or so). I was tired and I wanted to get the rental car back before 9 so I didn't have to get up early to turn it in the morning. Drove back to the Radisson, turned it in.
Still had some energy, so I went to the workout room, worked out and sat in the sauna. Then I went to bed.
Pathetically boring, I know. Sorry.
I do like the West, though. When I get old and retired, I'm not wintering in Florida. I'm coming to Cal or Arizona. Maybe I'll get an RV...
-
Welcome back, August. That sounds like exactly the kind of vacation I'd have in Cali. It's not boring, it's...restful!
I must lead the restfullest life ever.
-
I know all the places you mentioned; I usually wind up at that Costco every third weekend or so.
If I'd known you'd wind up in Culver City, I would have told you to eat at Tito's Tacos, and, well, shit.
Man. Now I feel bad for not playing Virgil to your Dante. Paul was right. Next time you wind up in town, you will wallow in sin.
Alright, all future TOUAMB visitors to L.A. need to give me a heads up on where you're staying. That way, even if I can't hang with you personally, I can make you a list of places to go so you don't wind up having dinner at the food court at the fuck*ng Fox Hills Mall.
-
In be in L.A. in three weeks, although I don't know if I'll be able to break free from "work" enough to hang out.
But I'm told I'm being taken to a restaurant where they use naked ladies as furniture. And may or may not be going shooting with Hunter S. Thompson. That's more than enough entertainment for one trip.
-
But I'm told I'm being taken to a restaurant where they use naked ladies as furniture. And may or may not be going shooting with Hunter S. Thompson. That's more than enough entertainment for one trip.
That is certainly more than I can offer you. If the nudity, fear and loathing don't pan out, let me know, I'll see what weirdness I can scrounge up to compensate.
-
There may be the possibility of including others in my semi-work-induced excursion. I can't really talk about it, but it involves me writing something for people who work in Hollywood. It's just a "meet-and-greet" whateverthefuck that is.
-
Ah. You are, in the parlance of this town, "taking a meeting."
As the time approaches, keep me posted on what your schedule's looking like and we'll see what can be done.
-
And to echo Asherdan's excellent, for-all-seasons advice:
Beware of dogs and hobos. And don't ask what's in a Hobo Dog.
-
So when do(es) the show(s) air?
-
April 27th.
And the giraffe at the food court was really very good.
-
April 27th.
And the giraffe at the food court was really very good.
Hey, that's the day after my birthday. I'll be sure to record it and pirate it to a downloadable form for all the message board to see.
And I never would have thought to buy giraffe in a food court.
-
And I never would have thought to buy giraffe in a food court.
I only did it because I was having An Adventure.
-
Yesterday I had a panic attack (not really) thinking that I had forgotten when the show was gonna air. Phew!!! Are we still on for 4/27?
~Paul
-
This is my first reading of this thread (being as how it was bumped and all, and I was lost when it began). Crazy! I'm looking forward to this 4/27 thing. Then I will know someone famous, although my cousin once made a guitar for Keb Mo'.
-
although my cousin once made a guitar for Keb Mo'.
That is much cooler than what I did.
-
although my cousin once made a guitar for Keb Mo'.
That is much cooler than what I did.
And if I had done it, I would be cool - but it wasn't actually me, so you have me trumped.
However, I know you (more or less) - thus my brush with greatness.
-
Here's (http://www.kentuckynewera.com/cgi-bin/view.cgi?/200404/24+jeopardy04242004_news.html+20040424+news)an article from my hometown newspaper. More than you wanted to know.
-
Hometown boy makes good!
Way to go, August. We will be watching on Tuesday and cheering you on post facto.
-
... And of course mocking you for incorrect answers (questions, I guess, considering the Jeopardy format).
-
Yay for August.
~Paul
-
I'm disappointed. I was really looking forward to seeing this, but I don't think I'm going to be able to (I'll be in Rolla, MO begging for a job). I'll have to try and tape the episode, but I won't be able to watch it until friday or so.
Can I get a promise of spoiler warnings when y'all talk about how well AW did?
-
It's funny - I'm at work, and all the tv channels come on a satellite feed out of Denver. So, all the newscasts and everything have to do with Denver. Also, all the shows are shown like two hours earlier. So I'm all figuring I wouldn't get to watch it. But just this week they re-did all the tv programming so we get feed out of Anchorage, and Jeopardy will be on at its regularly scheduled time, and I will get to see it - which basically rocks.
-
So, all the newscasts and everything have to do with Denver.
This is odd for reasons which will become apparent on Tuesday.
-
The correct Final Jeopardy question ends up being "What is Bob Denver's middle name?"
-
Maehbe.
I have tomorrow off - it's Confederate Memorial Day here in Georgia (what up wit dat?) - so I may just get to see Frankie-boy there on the small screen*! I'm meeting a fellow gov't worker for darts and beer at three, though, so it'll be a tight squeeze. I'll surely do my best!
It'll be wierd rooting for someone on Jeopardy. I usually play against all the contestants. My score kicks arse - but then, I'm not up on stage.
* It's on at 4:30 here because Oprah got Dr. Phil his own show and totally fucked up Atlanta's evening game show schedule. There are serious fights in progress with the affiliate in question.
-
so I may just get to see Frankie-boy there on the small screen!
Wait, so on the little screen in front of the lectern (or whatever the fuck) it won't say AugustWest?
-
Remember, August, if I see or hear "Who is Jough?" from you during the course of the show, YOUR CHEQUE WILL BE IN THE MAIL THAT DAY, as per our agreement.
-
so I may just get to see Frankie-boy there on the small screen!
Wait, so on the little screen in front of the lectern (or whatever the fuck) it won't say AugustWest?
Yeah, my paradigm was pretty crushed, too.
-
I was gonna change my real life name to August West, but my wife wouldn't let me. My Dad got pissed, too.
-
Whaddup with that title, Auggie?
"daddy's little idiot" - 1211 posts
Special ür-secret-trigger title for that one post count? Or did you -gasp- ask for that?
-
I don't ask for any of them. Well, at least not consciously. They just magically appear.
-
A taste of what's to come. I'm Frank. (http://www.jeopardy.com/gena.pjw?cont=thisweek4531_4535&cat=contestant)
-
Hey! I know that guy! :)
How terribly exciting...I haven't read the newspaper article yet, because I fear spoilers. I'll read it tomorrow after the show. I'm on the edge of my seat. Really!
-
And Jough, you better remember that you promised to divx it!
I'll be real upset if you don't.
And I'm chewing from the end of a baguette, so you better know I is serious!
Now, let's see if I can find somewhere to post not berating you...
Nope :)
-
There is really a place called Bagdad, Kentucky???
-
There is really a place called Bagdad, Kentucky???
OHHOHO Yes. There are a lot of funny place names in Kentucky; if you think Bagdad is good, wait until you hear about Monkey's Eyebrow, Kentucky.
-
There is really a place called Bagdad, Kentucky???
You bet -- all two general stores, one post office, one church and one bank of it.
-
Okay, WHAT. THE. FUCK.
I've got some goddamned episode with three guys named Tom, Doug, and Richard. Screw you, Dr. Phil. Fuck you!
-
Dude, I'm not on 'til tomorrow!
-
...Now, that shit's funny!...
Looking at that Rogues Gallery link you posted, Aug - nothing personal, just a question - but what standards do they apply in the auditions to decide who goes on TV? is it appearance (like, no disfigured mutants) or poise (like, no pissing yourself on camera) or what?
-
Also, Bagdad, KY is awesome. I hope you use your winnings to erect two 100 foot high crossed swords over the main road into town.
-

What exactly are you implying here, Dawg? That I am less than studly in my appearance and charming in my demeanor?
Actually, in the screening process, after the second test, they stood us up and we played a quick mock game of Jeopardy. I think this is where they vetted us for appearance and poise.
It was either then or during the swimsuit competition.
-
Also, Bagdad, KY is awesome. I hope you use your winnings to erect two 100 foot high crossed swords over the main road into town.
I'll certainly take that under advisement.
Kentucky has lots of strange place names. Within 5 miles or so of here we have Vigo, Cropper, Pleasureville, Peytona and Waddy.
-
Ooooh. Can I be the first to say that I want to live in Pleasureville?
It beats the ##### off of Hell, Mich.
-
Trying not to say anything about Waddy.
-
Oh come on! Take your best shot. I'm sure it won't lead to a sticky situation. It'll be a load off...
-
Dude, I'm not on 'til tomorrow!
errr... Oh.
-
Oh come on! Take your best shot. I'm sure it won't lead to a sticky situation. It'll be a load off...
*squirms*
c*ck c*ck c*ck!
Sorry, I couldn't deal with all of the SUBTLETY.
-
I'm hoping to see him go on a four day winning spree, only to mess up so badly on the Final Jeopardy question on the fifth day that they take away all of his winnings up to that point.
-
I don't want to spoil it for anyone who hasn't seen it yet - but let me just say that despite the outcome, August done us proud.
Good show, good man.
I should note, though, that I'm annoyed I have to set up another fuck*ng tape for tomorrow. If you're still on the damn show on Thursday and Friday, forget it, I'm not watching.
-
I'm watching it now- Worlds colliding, etc. But yes, congratulations indeed!
-
Is somebody going to DivX this? I have the means to get it onto my computer from the TiVo (I think) but know nothing about actually compressing into a file or anything.
-
So, it's on today at 4:30 pm, and I get off at 6:00 pm. I hate my job.
-
I just watched my tape. Big, fat congratulations to August. You're the man.
It was odd the extent to which I could guess which categories you'd do well in -- I saw "houseplants" and said, (literally) "Hell yeah, mufugga." Your knowledge of Pagan gods, however, impressed me.
We have the ability to make a digital copy, but it's going to be shitty because we don't have cable. So if someone who actually pays for television service wants to do it, be my guest.
PS: Way to go on getting the first question and stealing control from the Gumby Geek.
-
It just struck me that I will be in an airplane tomorrow when it is on. Then, on Thursday, my sweetheart will be welcoming me back home after a two-week absence. If someone tapes any or all, I would enjoy watching.
-
Thanks everybody. I'm so glad I'm finally able to share a pretty darn positive moment in my life with my very favorite group of people. Also, thanks JL for using your 1000th post to congratulate me. Whether it was intentional or not, it was still sweet!
I've spent the day talking to old friends to let them know this would be happening and posting reminders at all the online places I hang out. There are currently no less than 4 TotalFark threads on this, so I suppose this is my online 15 minutes. Tooting my own horn is not my nature, so I've felt like quite the little attention whore all day.
Tomorrow night, you can all watch me get frustrated because I can't ring in on time! I'm facing Lex Luthor.
Also, watching yourself on TV can be difficult. I felt like I was in Achewood at moments. What the hell is up with my eyebrows?!
Again, thanks for all your support. I waited to come here until last because I love you guys best. I'm gonna enjoy a little corn juice and wind down now.
-
Your expression after writing your answer for Final Jeopardy was classic.
And they doubled the $ amounts since I watched last. I'm way out of it.
-
I'm facing Lex Luthor.
NOOOOOOOOOOO!
Much congrats, dude.
-
Congrats August. I missed it. I knew I wasn't gonna be home so I had talked about having my mother tape it since I no longer have a VCR. I was supposed to remind her when the day was. Well it must have been rolling around my subconscious because I called her three times today. I had this lingering feeling that I was forgetting something. That memory finally kicked free of it's cage about 7 this evening. Please Jough put me on your list for a copy of the DIVX or whatever that is. Also, Congrats August, you are the awesomeist.
~Paul
-
VCR.
Timer.
Press the "Timer" button, douchebag.
(Add me to the list too, please, since I can't figure out how to work a thing I had working for me just last week)
-
Press the "Timer" button, douchebag.
I no longer have a VCR.
Hello!!!
~Paul
-
Congrats, man. I's proud of you, in my stunted little way.
-
LOVED the eyebrows.
-
Can someone post a clear-text spoiler-y summary for those of us who failed to watch, please?

It's all about the eyebrows.
-
This is the most upset I've ever been from not having access to the subject of a thread.
-
Press the "Timer" button, douchebag.
I no longer have a VCR.
Hello!!!
~Paul
I think Choop was referring to himself as the "douchebag," as per his statement:
I can't figure out how to work a thing I had working for me just last week
-
Our bunny ear reception is terrible and our sound lacks stereo, but our VCR skips to the good parts. Still, you may wish to see this episode of Jeopardy as we saw it!
Warning: Ending Revealed. (70mb mpg) (http://www.x-omega.com/adrian/augustrules.mpg)

Pedro, you are the awesomest. I saw this in the production stages, and I just wanted y'all to know that there is so much love for August here it's not even funny. It's a huge file, so those of you on dialup will probably want to hang yourselves by the time it's over, but it's worth the download -- especially if you're the star of this here show.
Jeopardy: The Good Parts Version.

That's beautiful. Nicely done clip reel.
Well, my reception is perfect, but I screwed up the DVR thing in Media Center so I don't have a digital version.
Perhaps this will be the excuse I need to purchase a Firewire/USB2 external capture card.
-
Please let that not go away until I get home. I will download it early tomorrow if it is still there. Please do not remove it. Please.
-
Hey, Slink (or anyone else technically inclined), is this what I'm looking for to capture video to my laptop?
http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?EDC=243668
If so, I'm totally going to order it today - for $60, I can't say no!
Or this one, maybe, for $82:

Sure, I think I can leave it there for about a week before the evil internet overlords get wise and shut me down. Those bastards!
Meanwhile, our fearless leader seems to be working on a nicely compacted spotless full version of the episode. Laying out money for it, no less.

Thanks, JL. 'Tis indeed what was meant. No offense meant, Paul.
-
Pedro, You. Are. Rad.
That was excellent and I thank you for the effort!
-
Pedro is WAY rad. August is radder yet.
-
Radness abounds!
Thanks, guys. I only did it because I have fewer than 90 posts, and I thought video posts counted extra. So don't thank me, thank greed.
-
Okay, I just ordered one of these:
http://aver.com/products/dvm_AVerDVD_ezMakerPro_usb.shtml
and hopefully if it lives up to its promise (I particularly like that it has its own processor for encoding mpeg-2 video - which I can slip right to a DVD-R and record in real-time) I'll have videos of both nights by the weekend.
-
I, for one, will never say the word "Prosciutto!" the same way again.
-
Dang, that guy was weird. He was apparently in too much of a hurry to say "for" when choosing a category. And what's with the $100 wagers?
-
I, for one, will never say the word "Prosciutto!" the same way again.
Did I say it wrong?
-
August, all I have to say is -- if you were going to lose, at least you lost to someone wierd. It makes it less painful, somehow.
Trashy talk shows?
Pedro's comment on seeing "Dave" for the first time: "HOLY LEX LUTHOR!"
Was he that wierd in person?
P.S. I don't think you mispronounced "proscuttio," but it was funny to hear Alex Trebec echo it with a lilt in his voice...hee hee...makes me giggle just thinkin' 'bout it.
-
Oh man, that was heartbreaking. I wish we could all get together and take that weird guy outside in the alley and beat him up.
Unrelated question: Are the women contestants always in last place? I never watch Jeopardy but I remember the women were almost always last when I used to watch Win Ben Stein's Money. The spouse claims that this is due to the superior male testosterone-driven button-pushing ability (his second theory after being pummeled for suggesting it's because men are smarter.)
-
He wasn't really that obnoxious in person, just kind of dorky.
Although I cannot imagine going on national television and telling people my hobby was watching Jerry fuck*ng Springer. I mean really -- some people just have no shame.
-
Aug - definitely, it's Alex' sort of perky, lilty, excited sounding 'Prosciutto!'
It sounds like a toast, or a group affirmation....
"I love you all and I thank you for everything you've done for me... <raises glass> prosciutto! <drains glass>"
Like that, except said by a dorky looking canadian guy.
-
I fast-forwarded through the non-AW chat parts. I'm guessing that made weird guy even weirder.
The woman who was on tonight seemed to be shaking like crazy.

The woman who was on tonight seemed to be shaking like crazy.
Pedro noticed she was compulsively pushing her buzzer while she was answering her questions. (Or questioning her answers, as the case may be.)
Both of them.
Ooooh, burn!
-
Curses, I missed it. He was really weirder than Gumby-guy?
-
The woman was pretty darn weird, too. But she was nice.
After we lost, they basically hustled us off the set. She said she was getting a cab to her hotel and since I had a rental car and am basically a well-mannered, chivalrous fellow I offered to give her a ride. It was (theoretically) easy for me because I knew I'd passed her hotel on the way to the studio that morning.
She was a nice lady. But she was a repressed, old-maid, bureaucrat librarian who'd worked for the Feds for 25 years. And I am, well, who I am.
We couldn't find her damn hotel. We drove around Culver City for 45 minutes looking for a building I knew I had passed on Sepulveda Boulevard. It approached high comedy as we both struggled to retain our manners while we desparately wished to be rid of each other. Finally I stopped at gas station and asked directions (Radisson? Yeah, it's right over there. See it?) and dropped her off. Just another little adventure in my Jeopardy journey.
Oh yeah, my Dad thought Lex Luthor looked more like Mussolini. Now I'm thinking he looks kind of like a shaved Dr. Phil.

I was too, but I guess I was just too smoooth to show it. That damn Duce, he was quick on the draw. Wouldn't surprise me if he wins some more games. Shithead.
-
It's pronounced "pruh-shute."
I was a little disappointed that you didn't write "What is Jough?" since you didn't know the question to the Final Jeopardy answer, but whatever. No cheque for you. You'll have to contend yourself with the thirty large.
I knew the FJ question, but the way they phrased it "Red Dawn" was actually incorrect. It was the first PG-13 film released, but the first film to be given a PG-13 rating was "The Flamingo Kid."
I'm glad no one put "Gremlins" or "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," though - those were the two films cited as the precedent for a PG-14 rating (it later became PG-13 before it was assigned to any film).
Anyway, a tough question. But the Color Purple?
I look forward to sending you a DVD next week, August - although my local station didn't show as much of the show's ending as JL and Pedro obviously taped - my station showed the stupid give-away products and then showed commercials until Wheel of Fortune came on. So no shots of you standing there with your hands folded awkwardly as you make small-talk on my disc.
Sorry.
-
It's pronounced "pruh-shute."
Jough, you are a font of childhood nostalgia for me lately - now you are speaking the dialect of my ancestral home town. Although as gramma said it, it's closer to 'bruh-shute.'
But be careful, my native-Italian-speaking dad was flunked by his college Italian teacher for speaking that dialect. They might do the same on Jeopardy.
-
Unrelated question: Are the women contestants always in last place? I never watch Jeopardy but I remember the women were almost always last when I used to watch Win Ben Stein's Money.
I have noticed that JL's not as good at trivia games as I am though she has an uncanny grasp of history and literature. My most recent theory is that men store random facts about a subject when learning while women remember relationships between people, things, and events. So while flipping through a history book, the dialogue goes like this:
Pedro: That's a picture of Hitler. He was a failed painter with one testicle.
JL: That's Mussolini beside him. At that moment, they're good friends with big plans, which is why your German grandfather lives in Argentina.
Pedro: My German grandfather smells funny.
In conclusion to this ridiculously broad generalization, men are good at Jeopardy, and women have a better idea of how the world works.
-
Oh yeah, my Dad thought Lex Luthor looked more like Mussolini. Now I'm thinking he looks kind of like a shaved Dr. Phil.
By the end of the show I realized that guy wasn't really Lex Luthor. He was instead Brad Garrett (http://imdb.com/gallery/granitz/1687/Events/1687/BradGarret_Grani_652853_400.jpg?path=pgallery&path_key=Garrett,%20Brad%20(I)) playing Lex Luthor.
And by the by, way to represent old school sci-fi to the nation. While Lex was all, "Sometimes they fight," you were keepin' it real.
-
Wombat: Your gramma was Sicilian, then. That's pretty much how I say it, too (I'm not Sicilian, but all of my Italian friends are). But try asking for it at the supermarché
-
Gramma was Southern Italian but not Sicilian. I can't remember the name of the town. But equally low class according to the Northerners and all those who pronounce the vowels at the ends of the words, I think.
I like Pedro's generalization. Although it worries me that it's the sex that's good at Jeopardy instead of that other stuff, that gets to be President all the time and all.
-
The woman who was on tonight seemed to be shaking like crazy.
Pedro noticed she was compulsively pushing her buzzer while she was answering her questions. (Or questioning her answers, as the case may be.)
The Mighty Mighty Bosstones were there?
I routinely spank my S.O. at You Don't Know Jack and can retain the random factoids from Good Eats, etc. but she generally wins Trivial Pursuit. Maybe it's the time factor, or the pop-culture-ness of YDKJ.
And if that guy was Lex Luthor don't you think he would've gotten Smallville right? Come on, people.
-
Man, I asked for spoiler warnings, people. But, it's ok since I forgot to set my VCR (why yes, I am a dumbass). Sorry I'm so late on the congrats, AW, but good work in any case. How much of the money is going to Ancient Age?
-
Hey, Slink (or anyone else technically inclined).
Sorry about that. Just got back from a conference full of lawyers.
Very nice lawyers really. And I guess I ought b careful what I say about lawyers here... Nah fuck that!
But anyway, back again til Saturday when I have to go to Birmingham again. I shall set that downloading tonight though.
-
Although it worries me that it's the sex that's good at Jeopardy instead of that other stuff, that gets to be President all the time and all.
It makes men good in a pinch. Ask the male President which nation to bomb, and he'll quickly respond, "What is Cragslapistan?" To the same question the female President may respond, "Oh dear, the communist one that doesn't care for Castro."
Of course, in Madame President's defense, she probably would have been able to put together a diplomatic solution with Cragslapistan that alleviated the need for bombing. She also wouldn't automatically phrase her answer in the form of a question.
Besides, our current President exemplifies the fact that not all men are good at geography and other 'trivia.'
-
Pedro: That's a picture of Hitler. He was a failed painter with one testicle.
JL: That's Mussolini beside him. At that moment, they're good friends with big plans, which is why your German grandfather lives in Argentina.
Pedro: My German grandfather smells funny.
I'm really starting to enjoy your witty banter, sir.
-
Sorry to continue attention whoring, but after this I will let this subject die a merciful death. However, I just have to gloat a little bit.
Jeopardy films a weeks worth of shows a day. I was there with the 12 or so people you saw on the preview page. We arrived a little before 9:00 and filming started at 11:30. In the meantime the contestant herders warmed us up, asked us questions, rehearsed our little promos, talked about the anecdotes Alex would ask us about. We got to know each other as much as you can in 3 hours or so.
Now, I'm not the most competitive guy in town, but I do have my moments. That being said ...
I made the most money! I made the most money! I did best! I did best!
In yo' face, fellow February 4th contestants! N'yah N'yah N'yah!
Mmwwwahahahahhahahahaha!
Let us never speak of this again.
-
I made the most money! I made the most money! I did best! I did best!
It's funny - with all that money, the ol' tip jar here sure is pretty empty.
*ahem*
Anyway, my dang video capture device won't be here until Wed. or Thursday - but I will be testing it by encoding August's Jeopardy clips - and trying out the Ulead editing software on cutting out the commercials.
Should be fun.
-
I'll remember that when I get the check in August.
-
Lest August's head grow any bigger, I didn't drop $150 for a video capture device and USB 2 card just to encode his clips - but this was kinda what pushed me over the edge from thinking "I'd be cool to have..." to "oh goddammit i got to get me one of those..."
Plus, I did promise divx files, and I'm a man of my word.
-
Courtesy of Asherdan, I have a videotape of AW's two days on Jeopardy - complete with some "Malcolm in the Middle", but that at the start, oddly enough. If anyone would like it, PM me with details and I will send it.
