my girlfriend thinks it is HILARIOUS that I own a blow-dryer, and does not believe that I ever use it.

Yeah, you could, unless you had hair that looked like that (to say nothing of that moustache). In which case you owe it to the public to put in the time and effort.

Bah. I owe the public nothing. NOTHING, DO YOU HEAR ME!!! NOTHING!
-
I guess you're right - with rg, it's more of a gift.
-
Happy late birthday. Nice hair!

Yep. I started monk-dimin' a few months ago, and I had to give up all my efforts at maintaining my Morrissey quiff, which was the style I'd been rockin' since 17. You can't really carry that one off when you're thinnin' at the back. I just got one of those fancy globe-shaped home clippers things and did a straight number 2 over my head, which at least diminishes the difference somewhat. Feels bad, man.
I was surprised at how much of a sad little bitch hair loss made me feel. Like, I had a hard time coming to terms with it, and then I had to come to terms with how embarrassed I was at how bad it made me feel.
-
Oh, happy birthday, dude, since I just hi-jacked your birthday thread to talk about hair loss. Many happy returns and may your flowing locks never fade away.
-
It's just possible that I had a mullet and Prince moustache at 27. If I did, I'm not sure why I would have thought that was a good thing to do.
-
my friends losing their hair was pretty much the direct catalyst for me to grow it long.
like once i heard my bro talking about rogaining, it felt like i had to a duty to grow my hair for all the dudes that can't. i feel like getting a cut would be rubbing it into people who are going bald. like "look at me, i can do whatever i want, and not care!"
and now im so committed i dunno if there is a way out
-
Happy Birthday. Thanks for that clip. Very performance arty.
Is it wrong as one of the few ladies on the board that I want shout "you're doing it wrong!" and to teach you about how to use a hair drier appropriately? Please disregard the following if you don't care, because it is okay to not care about this:
If on the other hand you want to be more efficient, what you need to know is that you're using the concentrator attachment too early in the process. For wet, straight from the shower hair of your length you want to use the drier on high, with out the concentrator attachment, until it is just damp, then put on the concentrator, set the drier to a lower setting and use a round brush (if straitening and smoothing is the goal) while holding the end of the concentrator about 2 1/2 inches from the hair on the brush and working brush and drier from root to tip, section by section. I know this 1) because my mom trained (unsuccessfully mind you) to be a hair stylist and 2) because my dad taught at a technical school and I was the test subject for many a cosmetology student back in the day.
-
If you cared as much as Paul does about helping us, you would make a YouTube video.
-
Hm thanks. Why a round brush? And by that you mean the head of the brush is oval shaped, yes?

did a straight number 2 over my head,... Feels bad, man.
Mmmm. Kinky.

I had the same reaction as Smells. My hair is longer and super-thick, and I blow-dry and straighten in less than six minutes. (I think? I have never timed it.)
Hm thanks. Why a round brush? And by that you mean the head of the brush is oval shaped, yes?
A round brush is like what GKA posted, but I don't think you want that. It'll dry faster, but it will also take the lovely wave out of your hair. The vented brush you have is fine -- it's what I use on mine. But you should use it with the dryer to section your hair and dry from the root to the tip, as Smells noted. It sounds fussier, but it's actually considerably faster.
If it's a Thing, and if Smells doesn't want to, I will post a video. I think I owe it to you guys after Paul's popcorn tutorial.
Also, happy belated birthday. Facebook has burned me out on posting birthday greetings to people, so I have been avoiding birthday threads, but this one was just too damn interesting to skip.
-
My hair is nothing like ro b ot god's - not as long, and much much finer, so no I will not post a video.
A round brush is used for getting the poker-straigh down, with no waves look, but with a little more thought into it, I agree with JL - the brush you have makes it look nice and natural, rather than like Morticia Addams, which is more the effect you'd get from a round brush.
-
If it's a Thing
It's definitely a thing.
Having said that... the man has hair of the gods. His method is working just fine for him.
-

Well, sure. But if he can cut his hair-drying time in half, he'll have more time to share his godlike locks with the public.
-
Ok, I made an instructional video. But since it has my real face and my youtube account uses my real name, I don't want to post it unless there's real demand. So let me know if there's actual interest in seeing how I make my head go from wet to dry.
-
Only if you're puckering and vamping for the camera as much as RGod did.

Let's not forget the times the blower goes south...
-
Only if you're puckering and vamping for the camera as much as RGod did.
Yeah, no. I'm not half as good looking anyway.
-
Oh, like anyone's going to care about hunting them down little old Joanna Lenore.
Oops! Sorry about that Jay-Ell!
This whole time I thought I'd been conversing with Julia-Louis Dreyfus.
-
Only if you're puckering and vamping for the camera as much as RGod did.
actually a lot of the puckering is drying my mustache
-
I blow dry too, though hoping for different results, so I wouldn't mind seeing it.

Okay. Here it is, for a few days. I'll take it down once you guys have had a chance to watch and learn.

I have a really muddled accent now, I think. When I go North, my family there marvels at how Southern I sound, but my in-laws tease me about my "Yankee" accent.
I have lived in the south long enough that I've picked up the more obvious things like "y'all" and "I'ma do that," but the underlying midwesterniness never faded. And when I'm in dialog with someone else, I pick up whatever accent they speak with. I think that video probably betrays the closes thing to a natural speaking voice I really have, but in conversation I often sound completely different.
When I watch too much BBC it gets embarrassing, because none of my British accents are very good but I have trouble turning them off once they've gotten in my head.

I watched 42 seconds of that and I'm pretty sure I better stop there. Oh my.
Also, I am drunk. And soon to be drunker. I am surrounded by gorgeous young ladies tonight.
-
I can't actually watch the whole thing, I have tried twice to test for sound quality and such but it is just too boring. But I don't think mine is half as sexy as RG's. I am just, you know, drying my hair and being bossy.
And midwestern, apparently.
-
Today my dad told me that as a child he had a mild Scottish accent in addition to his Boston accent. His teacher made him go to speech therapy until he stopped saying things like "bah-nah-nah" for banana.
My girlfriend claims my whole family has a weird accent that she can't imitate or place. She says it is both that we say certain words in a weird way, and that we have the same speech patterns. She has a cute Chicago accent that has mostly gone away. This makes me sad.
-
thanks for the tips jl. do you think the damage from drying thing is a myth? everyone seems to have different opinions.
then even if its damaged, does that mean new hair that grows in will not have the damage? and what exactly is the damage? who really knows?
i had to go to speech therapy because i couldnt pronounce the H sound in the word "three." would just say "tree." just thought about it the other day and now ive reverted back to 'tree' for fun. my new york accent is pretty thick and i put it on intentionally sometimes. i read this article once that said the NY accent is the only amercian accent perceived as being unintelligent and since then ive tried to use it intentionally.
-
that is completely insane. As if people don't look down on low social class accents of all stripes.
I guess the issue is that there isn't really an upper-class NY accent anymore? No one has a mid-atlantic accent. I miss that accent.
-
There isn't an upper class NY accent anymore because the upper class NY accent became the lower class NY accent, at least to some extent. It used to be the posh people who dropped their Rs.
And yeah, I can't see why you'd claim the NYC accent was more stigmatized than say a Southern accent. I think it's still true that in movies they basically give a character a Southern accent to show the person is stupid.
-
Some of the richest people I knew in New York City affected the fuck out of "street" New York accents to create the illusion of toughness and authenticity.
-

In my singles linguistics class I seem to remember them saying that this has happened in the UK as well.
-
In the UK it is still the posh accents that drop postvocal R and also insert Rs between words in some cases. It's a very neat proof that what is stigmatized or admired is not actually something about language (like that dropping Rs is "lazy" or "ignorant"), but it's how people feel about the group that speaks that way, and the accent is just how the group is identified.
What's also funny of course is that Americans basically think nearly all British accents sound fancy. People who speak horribly stigmatized British accents can come here and have everyone think that how they speak is totally cool.
-
Yes, I think Southern US accents are often used as shorthand for "uneducated" in film, absolutely. One of Pedro's favorite games, when he has to call and order theater tickets, for instance, is to adopt his best Good Ol' Boy voice and say something like, "Hey, y'all, I'm thinkin' I wanna come see that ol' Oprey y'all have goin,' do y'all have any tickets left for that there show?" He can lay it on pretty thick. Once, he had to call tech support, and he did the whole thing in Southern, asking more and more difficult technical questions until it became clear that the service rep didn't know jack about the product he was trying to sell. The tech didn't know what to do with this hick on the phone who sounded like the cast of Deliverance but seemed to really understand the ins and outs of jailbreaking a cell phone.
I don't recall the specifics and I'm not doing it justice here, but it was clever and funny, IMHO.

Maybe I watch too much BBC, but I don't think East London cockney accents sound particularly intelligent, even to most Americans. Fun to listen to and perhaps even "exotic" in a mundane kind of way, but I think most Americans with half an ear could hear the class difference between cockney and RP.
For my part, I love listening to accents in general, but my favorite lately has been Welsh. When I was watching a lot of Torchwood I loved having those sounds sloshing around in my head all the time. Apparently a lot of English speakers think it's ugly and hard to understand, but I think it's glorious. But, then, I also love listening to working-class New York accents, so what the hell do I know?
-
You may have a good ear, JL, but I don't think that is typical. Here are two real life examples that come to mind. One is that a few years ago around here there were some burglars breaking into people's houses, sometimes when they were home, and the victims reported that they spoke with British or Australian accents. First of all they couldn't tell the difference, and second, it turned out they were faking the accents and no one reported "guys speaking with obviously fake foreign accents."
Second, I knew a zookeeper from London Zoo who did a job exchange and was here for a year who had the most extreme Cockney accent you ever heard. When it was time for her to go home she was really depressed and she said it was largely because at home, every time she opened her mouth people looked at her like she was trash, but here, everyone thought it was so cool that she had a British accent and were really nice to her, because they had no idea of the significance of her particular accent.
If you start looking out for the southern accent thing, you'll see it used when it doesn't even make sense geographically, like the people aren't even in the south.
-
I meet lots of people with "Southern" accents in St Louis. Turns out Southern Illinois is pretty damn southern.
-
get out of my brain, dude.

Ha! I was trying to figure out how to make this joke work.
I know this has come up before but the single linguistics class I took was taught by David Bowie, who learned at the feet of Professor Wombat.
Also, because the class was at BYU where you basically are expected to get a marriage license in addition to a degree, it kind of was a singles linguistics class.
-
I had forgotten that! How could I forget that? It is such a wondrous coincidence.
-
Anybody who has watched Mary Poppins knows this.
Or anyone who'd watched My Fair Lady, you'd think. But as a matter of actual fact most of them don't.
Some people just don't have an ear for it and an hour and a half movie doesn't exactly work as training. Like I can't for the life of me remember bird songs or frog calls, even though I am trained as a musician and you'd think it wasn't all that different.
Also, you know, some people just use language, they don't spend a lot of time thinking about it, like posting on internet messageboards that get into arguments about prescriptive grammar.
-
What happens to people who spend too much time arguing about language. (http://xkcd.com/1010/)
-
Well, and Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady and etc represent pretty extreme examples of accents. I suspect the zookeeper probably wasn't babbling in rhyming slang all the time.
-
No, and that's an interesting point because if she had been, then you couldn't give anyone credit for identifying her accent anyway. That's vocabulary, not pronunciation, so if that's what people take away from those movies they haven't actually learned anything about the accent.
-

Rhyming slang is fascinating. There's such a strict pattern to it, but sounds so utterly random. I can't follow it at all, because it's rarely used on TV, and only then to display how incomprehensible it is.
But it seems like it's no worse than any other slang system -- how many people outside the US would be able to parse, "I blew my stash on PBR, so I was totally buzzed, but there was this knockout at the bar and she was game so we went back to my pad." Especially if it was uttered with a thick accent of any kind on top of it.

I love that movie. Yes, it's a film I've actually seen! I think Brad Pitt is only hot in movies where he gets his ass beat. Snatch, Fight Club, totally shaggable. Legends of the Fall, not so much.
His character in Snatch reminds me of Fenster in The Usual Suspects. That's some high-quality acting, right there.
IN OTHER NEWS: Hot Cockney Action (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbeMw7D2Y7Y). You guys probably know all about this, but I'm behind the times. My BFF introduced me to her music this past weekend, seemed apropo.
