did paleolithic man have precision cutlery and nonstick pans, this diet makes no sense
-
It goes with Cross-Fit, to me. Yes, back in the day our ancestors used to devour sides of mammoth and run through the jungle for 14 hours a day. They also died before they were 30 (and none of them looked like Daryl Hannah, I'll bet).
-
Yeah, my reaction to Paleo dieting is this: Do you know why, after generations of eating only meat and plants, we as a species decided it was worth the trouble to settle down and raise wheat and rice and drink the milk of cows instead of just killing them for their beef? Because that shit is awesome. As soon as we evolved to the point where we could make pasta happen, we were on top of that action.
You thaw out a caveman and give him the choice between a handful of grass and berries (which is what he probably mostly ate because meat was very hard to get) and a big steaming bowl of macaroni and cheese (the most energy-dense, protein-rich poverty food in the history of the world) and I guarantee, once he decides the pasta isn't going to kill him, he will gruffle that shit. We're hard-wired for it, so if you wanna go "natural," follow your cravings and only eat when you're hungry. That's *way* healthier than eliminating entire food groups, for sure.

I think so. Agriculture is not without its drawbacks, but grains aren't one of them.
-
I lived with a cross fit trainer who was all about the paleo diet. I couldn't quite endorse the philosophy of it, but dinner consisted of throwing a piece of meat on the grill for a couple minutes and grazing on salads and berries. Going for an evening jog was a lot easier with leaves in my belly as opposed to pasta or some microwave concoction.

America's fatness has a lot more to do with the amount of time we spend sitting on our asses (driving, working, and watching TV) than it does with the particular balance of macronutrients we choose in our diets.
Paleo has two major drawbacks in my opinion: no beer, and it fails to take advantage of the human superpower mutation that evolved during the neolithic - lactase persistence.
In terms of macro economics, you can't feed the world with a paleo diet anyway. It is possible for rich pukes like us, but most people can't afford to get their calories from meat, nuts, and olive oil.

In my experience, many of the folks who are likely to indulge in a paleo diet are short-sighted enough to think it doesn't matter if the people who can't afford paleo all starve to death.

...which makes it pretty authentically paleolithic

wait, guys, for real: are paleo diet people advocating that everyone should eat this way, or are they just doing it to gain muscle/lose weight?

No - many of them just act as though its because people are stupid, lazy and undisciplined that they don't eat Paleo. See, if everyone ate that way, there wouldn't be an obesity epidemic and the health care debate would be moot because no one would get the "diseases of affluence" (heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, stroke).

Most guys on Paleo are in it to eat what they believe humans were meant to eat as opposed to the over processed science experiments that modern people stuff in their faces. I haven't heard any get all preachy and judgmental in the way that some vegans or vegetarians can be.

However, unless they're also getting the diseases humans were meant to get as opposed to the over processed science experiments that modern people inject as vaccines, I will feel free to question their commitment to the concept.
-
Also weren't we meant to die at like 30? You know nature is really not all it's cracked up to be.
-
i'd try the paleo diet but you'd have to kill me to take away my flamin' hot chee-tohs
-
...meant to eat...
Interesting. If you think you are meant to do something, does that imply that you believe you were designed, and therefore believe in a creator? Does belief in the paleo diet correlate to theism?

Urge to lock . . . rising . . .

Topic split. Take it away, boys.

Aug, you are trolling! "meant to" is perfectly easily interpreted in evolutionary terms.
Not that that makes it any less stupid. We invented civilization for a reason, even if at this point we may have taken it a little too far.

real talk:
both our digesting and craving facilities developed in a world without high fructose corn syrup, lil debbie snacks, or pasta. That does not make those things poison. What it does mean is this: our brains love these foods, because they are calorically rich and fatty and sweet. Maybe JL's idea of only eating when you are hungry and eating what you crave would work if you were on a paleo diet. In my world/body, what that would mean was PIZZA EVERY NIGHT, WITH A LIL DEBBIE CHASER. These foods are like nothing our ancestors could have imagined, which means that our dumb brains LOVE THEM and want to eat them whenever we can. Of course our cave-dwelling ancestors would have loved to eat some pizza. They would also have loved to have big guns so they could rape/pillage/plunder. They also would have loved lowest-common-denominator reality TV shows, would never walk anywhere, and would vote for whoever told them the most comforting lies.
Luckily, we have a few thousand (hundred thousand?) years of culture between us and them. As well as things like science, which tell us that eating pasta carbonara for every meal will kill you.

ive read articles and heard "experts" say that eating lots of (red)meat gives you cancer. im sure the cows have something to do with it, though....
-
that's the other thing-- that thing Wombat was saying about dying by thirty. If everyone dies before forty cancer isn't really a problem.
-
Or heart disease. But now that we have antibiotics and shit to keep us from dying young of a million things, it's a different ball game.
Not to say you should eat pizza and Little Debbie every night, but surely there is a happy medium.

You know what I love? Picking up a lamb shank bone and sucking on it until every bit of marrow is slurped up into my mouth. Fuck Yeah!
-
Is that what you kids are calling it these days?
-
She walked right into that one.
-
Nah, not to scare you guys, but that is exactly what I was thinking when I was sucking on that bone. I just didn't want to be too vulgar about it.
-
vulgarity is one of the spices of life.

Being 2 meters tall and 170lbs for the last 12 or 13 years no matter if I eat cheesecake or salad for every meal has given me a completely warped sense of food and calories. I guess it is my superpower?
Last night I put some really thick, boneless pork chops in a casserole dish and covered it with cooked stuffing and condensed cream-of-mushroom soup. 400° for 45 min. Served it with some tator tots and it was pretty much the best thing I had eaten in the last month. Bike 20 miles a day and you can eat like this at every meal!
-
shit, I need to start biking again.
today I ate leftovers of this stuff (http://budgetbytes.blogspot.com/2010/09/chicken-chili-verde-915-recipe-114.html) which were OFF THE CHAIN. Tonight I added some rice to thicken it up.
A coworker expressed disbelief that I could cook, so two random-ass lady coworkers are getting chili for lunch tomorrow. I even put little stickers on the tupperware with their names and a :) face.

The first time I heard about Paleo was in '99 when I was in college, vegan, and working at a health food store. Some douche asked me about some supplements. Somehow in the conversation, he asked me what I thought about the meat that the store sold, and I replied that I had not tried it. He asked why, I said I was vegan. He got in my face and was about as evangelical as a fundamentalist Christian about why my eating habits were terrible. Dude had greasy chi, made me uncomfortable just being around him. He said that I was stupid for following a vegan diet because we were meant to eat like a caveman and that meant meat. I just turned away and continued my work stocking the shelves. He persisted for a few minutes with his ridiculous diatribe to my back, and then eventually sputtered indignantly that I would not submit to his abuse, and he oozed off somewhere else. The worst part about that job was that a certain percentage of the customers were just batshit insane.
If your diet or any chosen part of your lifestyle is going to turn you into an asshole who berates complete strangers for not following your path, then maybe you ought to look at your life and figure out when you became such a huge asshole. If you can contain yourself to remain smugly silent in your knowledge that yours is the One True Path, without accosting random people in your path, then knock yourself out with your crazy diet.
