“If you ask me to name the proudest distinction of Americans, I would choose – because it contains all the others – the fact that they were the people who created the phrase 'to make money'. No other language or nation had ever used these words before; men had always thought of wealth as a static quantity – to be seized, begged, inherited, shared, looted, or obtained as a favor. Americans were the first to understand that wealth has to be created."

It's a great country. I may have had no electric service for almost four days, and I still don't have my internet back, but I am using the internet on my laptop via my cell phone for only 20 dollars a month. Days of miracle and wonder, I tell you.

Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

Emma Lazarus, 1883

That, and blues music (and its various offshoots). That is mostly what America means to me. Those two things alone make it all worth it.

Went to a soccer game, Real Salt Lake vs Seattle. 0-0.  Fuck that.

Should have gone to the Salt Lake Bees (Triple-A baseball) game, where I could have seen the Tacoma Rainiers beat them 6-5. Which would have almost been like seeing the Mariners beat the Angels.

I had a good time for the most part though. And it is a great country.

Happy 4th (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mLRAbEyvyuU) everyone, and happy birthday Jaydub.

Belated but still, may God ever bless America, and all.

Watched the A's beat the Red Sox at the Oakland Coliseum, courtesy of my youngest brother and his bride.  Dinner out, then home for fireworks on the back patio and ice cream cake.  A fine way to celebrate #43.  Thanks for the birthday wishes, all.

We did a picnic (pulled pork sandwiches, corn on the cob, pasta salad, watermelon slices) on the lawn of a local amphitheater and listened to the NC Symphony play patriotic music. We chatted with friends, made paper hats and fans with the kids, read a kids' book about America's Birthday, I painted half a dozen faces, and we watched our kids' expressions of awe and delight as they took in one of the best fireworks displays we've seen in their lifetimes.

It was perfect.

As I drove home the huge fireworks display at the Arch was going on. All over the city there were people on their roofs, porches, and even picnicking in the medians of major roads, watching the fireworks. Awesome.

San Diego's premature finale

It went off 5 mins early as well, so no matter where you look on the web, it seems the coverage picks up in the middle of the...eruption?

Someone forgot to close their eyes and think of England... Or were they doing exactly that?

We watched the Nats beat the Giants, and used my club passes in the process because it was too damn hot to sit in our regular seats. Then we went home and watched people in our neighborhood set off fireworks. The folks right across the street seem to be over this--they did NONE this year, after ramping down considerably last year. We've decided we need to take the girls to a real 4th of July fireworks show--not the big one at the Washington Monument, because the girls aren't ready for the logistical nightmare that becomes, but one out here in the 'burbs.

The fireworks in the outlying areas aren't nearly as spectacular, but they are pretty dang good. and not having to deal with the big city traffic and crowd hassle makes it so worth it.

Then we went home and watched people in our neighborhood set off fireworks. The folks right across the street seem to be over this--they did NONE this year, after ramping down considerably last year.

Maybe they are having financial troubles.

Maybe they are having financial troubles.

I gather it was a family issue. Their son used to throw a big party and set off all the fireworks. He moved out, so last year his dad set off only a few, and this year none at all--apparently without the kid and his buddies around he just didn't feel motivated.

Of course, that may well be a cover for "We couldn't afford to blow up several thousand dollars worth of fireworks this year."
