Title: Banksey Art Show a Flop
Post by: pmcd9 on October 14, 2013, 06:31:37 pm
Banksey proved that if it's art for art's sake that nobody cares about his mediocre paintings (http://www.thisiscolossal.com/2013/10/banksy-art-sale/)

This was framed as a prank and I may buy it. Something similar happened when Damien Hirst started painting traditional canvases. Nobody gave a shit (and they knew who he was): http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2012/may/22/damien-hirst-two-weeks-review (http://www.theguardian.com/artanddesign/2012/may/22/damien-hirst-two-weeks-review)

In the case of Hirst, looks like people who are really good in drawing attention away from the Art (towards the art circuit & power structure) are not that good in making just, you know, Art, to begin with. Who'd have thunk it?

I once described my taste in art as "lines converging on points." Now I have a collection of art that is all lines on points and one really rocking picture of a woman crying at a desk.

banksy proved that anybody who sees banksy prints in a vendor stall on central park probably suspects they're forgeries.

Yeah, Choop's exactly right.

We didn't need Banksy to prove that. Everything sold in a vendor stall on central park is a forgery or some guy's print. Art is bought in galleries, not from these hustlers.

Right but that means the point is - this doesn't say anything about whether this is good art. In fact the opposite, that anyone who did care about his paintings would be the last ones to buy them there.

Banksey's art has never been about the art anyway so I guess it's unfair to judge him on it.

This. There's no such a thing as Banksy "forgeries" because there were never any "originals". Stencil is all about easy reproduction, I'm too old for this shit etc.

Oh, fuck it, if this is to be our art thread you can handle this also: Terry Richardson is a walking smegma stain and everyone associated with him is, too.

I would say the "originals" are the ones made by banksy, with his stencils? As opposed to someone re-creating the image on their own.

But also fuck banksy.

You're talking about legal authentication processes, since the "original" is virtually indistinguishable from the "copy".

I'm not sure what makes what art but if we agree a verifiable Banksy 'original' would be worth far far more than these were offered to people for then I think it does make it a good prank.

But there is a lot of more traditional art that is like this. There is such a thing as an original woodblock print, for instance, even though you can make more than one of them.

I've seen numbered series only, and again, the copies wouldn't be worth much (if we're talking signature value) without some sort of certificate of authenticity. Banksy is still a twat, though.

i guess you have to find the first occurrence of whatever piece and cut it out of the surface or wall?

If Banksy has the stencil and he only makes one then that makes it a unique piece of art surely?

Who cares? Some asshole's just going to paint over the eyebrows a hundred years later.
