The Pearly Gates that is. Bum Phillips (http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2013/10/houston-icon-bum-phillips-dies/) has died.
After losing to eventual Super Bowl Champions Pittsburgh for the second year in a row in the AFC Championship game the Houston Oilers returned to an adoring crowd that filled the Astrodome to greet their fallen heroes. I watched on the television as the players spoke to the crowd, but it was Bum Phillips who gave the most memorable speech when he said "Last year we knocked on the door. This year we beat on it. Next year we're going to kick the son of a bitch in." It was the greatest moment in Houston sports history. Houston never won the big game, but we felt good that our team almost beat (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/multimedia/photo_gallery/1001/nfl.playoffs.best.afc.championship.games/content.3.html) what some have called the greatest football team of all time. ESPN ranks them 7th (http://espn.go.com/page2/s/list/football/teams/greatest.html).
I loved Bum Phillips.

Two kinds of players ain't worth a damn- one never does what he's told, and one who does nothin' but what he's told.
