Yeah, the idea that Ray Rice got only two games, vs. four for Brady here, doesn't sit well with me.
I got in an argument with someone on one of the Gawker sites a while back, who was very firmly in the "I have nothing to hide so I have no fear of police searches" camp. Anything cops did that resulted in more "bad guys" getting arrested was OK with him. Didn't buy the "Better to let 100 guilty people go free than convict one innocent person" argument that Ben Franklin espoused. Seemed to believe that no innocent person was ever arrested, and if they did no biggie, they'd obviously be exonerated.
So here you go. If they want to get you, they probably will.

Comparing Brady to Ray Rice is completely irrelevant. Apples to oranges.
What the Patriots did (and Brady was at least complicit in) directly related to the integrity of the game -- the quality of the product the league is trying to sell. If the NFL doesn't crack down on cheating within the actual game it ends up with the credibility of rasslin'. Plus, it's the league's job to enforce its own internal rules. What the Pats did wasn't a civil tort or a crime -- just a violation of NFL rules, so the NFL is the only entity which can and should take action about it.
Ray Rice, on the other hand, committed a crime. The civil and criminal justice systems are there to address it. The NFL, like any other employer, should have policies about what happens when players commit crimes, and they should enforce those policies consistently. But the primary source of justice should be the state.
I think it's more interesting to compare Deflategate to the Sean Payton bounty scandal.
