Boston is one guy, Tom Schultz, from the original band playing with a bunch of sidemen. Dennis DeYoung on his own is as legitimately Styx as Tom Schultz is Boston. So why does one get to carry on with the name and the other doesn't? Good lawyers I guess.

No. This is not true. Boston was always pretty much Tom Scholz and sidemen. Sidemen may be a little harsh, but Scholz was clearly the musical force in that band.
Styx (in its heyday) was mainly Dennis DeYoung and Tommy Shaw, plus there were a bunch of other guys involved early on.
Hooray for cheesy 70's stadium rock!

That's true. Styx is more of an actual band than Boston ever was. I just found it kinda funny.
A better example is the case of War which has 1 original member. There is also the Lowrider Band which has 4 original members of War. Talk about getting screwed by the lawyers, they are not even allowed to mention the name War in any of their promotions, or interviews or on stage.
And what's up with Supertramp? You can't hardly find any Supertramp on YouTube. All you can find are Roger Hodgson versions. He must have the rights to all of the music they did when he was in the band.
