I think Limmo underestimates the fascination that just walking around any part of LA can have for those of us from back east. You could go indoors and see Lewis Black anywhere.  Go outside and be in California!

And, the weather report says it's 62 in LA right now.  This is not balmy?  In February?  Oh my, you Californians clearly have no idea how lucky you are.

Speaking of visiting fellow Ache-Heads:

Wombat, Pedro and I will be in Washington, DC from March 4 thru the 8th.  We have a wedding to attend on Saturday and a rehersal on Friday night, but if you'll be at the Zoo Sunday or Monday we'd love to stop by and see the naked mole rats.  Any other DC-area kids are welcome to tour the zoo with us; neither of us have ever been.

Indeed!

I pretty much always work Sundays.  I don't know about Monday this far in advance, but it's not like they won't let me in the building on my day off.

I've got an assload of vacation this year so I might take that Monday off just in case.

Would you rather we came and visited you at work, or do you prefer getting together elsewhere on your day off, should that option be available?  Sunday might work better for us, but either day is really fine.  We just need to head for home by about 5 PM on Monday.  Also, at some point in the next month (golly this is well-planned) we'll need to set a meeting place and time for all those who care to come.  So all you DC/VA/MD folks, let me know if/when you're available and we'll figure something out.

Meanwhile, it's about time to split this thread.

Being a NoVa-ian I know virtually nothing about the city other than 9:30, Black Cat, Metro Cafe, MCI Center so I'm going to defer to the city-folk on this one.

But parking sucks so I vote metro-accessible.

You mentioned going to the zoo, right?  The ZooBar, on Connecticut Ave. right across from the zoo entrance on that side, might be a good spot.  Nothing fancy, just beer and sammiches and stuff, but not all that crowded on a Sunday afternoon.  Metro-convenient, yes, about three blocks from Woodley Park on the red line.

There's also my once-and-future favorite bar, Dr. Dremo's, in Arlington, a few blocks from the Court House metro.  Pool tables, good beer.

If it helps, we'll be staying on Dupont Circle and plan to do a lot of walking and metro-riding.  I love DC, but I hate driving there (who doesn't?).  I know the monuments and museums pretty well, but I don't know any nightclubs/restaurants/hotspots, so suggestions are welcome from the locals.

I've been to DC a dozen times, and it's IMHO the greatest city in the world, so I've done all the touristy stuff.  Pedro has only been there once, for three hours on the way back from a wedding in Baltimore, and I dragged him through the war memorials, the Lincoln, Washington, and FDR memorials, and the Supreme Court in that brief amount of time.  I'd like to do the monument walk again, at a more humane pace, but there's a whole aspect of DC I've never seen -- I take the field-trip approach, so I miss a lot of the culture -- that Pedro's probably more interested in than a bunch of old buildings.

Things that would be helpful to know:

-- Good, cheap, non-greasy places to eat
-- A couple of nice restaurants to go on a date -- preferably someplace known for their cuisine, not necessarily for the "atmosphere"
-- Someplace to get really good Chinese food
-- A couple of fun after-dinner things to do -- there's a really neat play running at Ford's Theatre which would serve a dual purpose: satisfying my need to drag Pedro to every bleedin' historical site and monument and his affinity for, you know, culture and the arts.

"Good, cheap, non-greasy places to eat":
If you're staying in Dupont, you MUST go to Pizzeria Paradiso, the best pizza inside the Beltway.  2029 P St.  There may be a wait, but it's worth it.

You can also take the bus or otherwise go up to Adams-Morgan where there are a wealth of good places.  If you've never had Ethiopian food, now's the time; I like Meskerem on 18th St.  There's also a great Italian joint called I Matti that is right up the street from Meskerem; I've always thought they could charge about twice as much for their food as they do.

"A couple of nice restaurants to go on a date -- preferably someplace known for their cuisine, not necessarily for the "atmosphere"":

If you're willing to drop some bucks, I'd recommend Vidalia (http://www.washingtonian.com/dining/Profiles/Vidalia.html) at 20th & M.

"Someplace to get really good Chinese food":
Ooh ooh ooh.  My favorite place in Chinatown is called Li Ho Food, 5th & H.  It's a total dive and my wife hates it, but their Singapore-style noodles are the absolute bomb.  Other good joints in Chinatown are Eat First, Full Kee, and Chinatown Express, aka "Cheap-Ass Noodle Place," where we often get house-made stir-fried noodles for $5 before hockey games.

I am figuring that most other people would only be able to come on Sunday.  I work 6.30-3 with lunch 12-1. There are various options depending on how long you want to stay at the zoo.  I could show you around Small Mammals before or after lunch and have lunch with youall, and then you could go off and look at more stuff, and then we could hang out when I finished work.  If that sounds like too much zoo, we could do it another way.

If it turns out that I am off Monday, we can think about whether to do it then.  There are pros and cons for me either way so I will go with whatever is best for everyone else.

I need to think more about where you might want to eat but... There is a nice pseudo-Asian tea place in Dupont called Teaism.  R street or something, I will look it up if you are interested. The Zoo Bar is indeed convenient to the zoo but when we used to go there the service was VERY slow (one of the reasons we never do anymore.)  Full Kee in Chinatown is closed for renovations last I heard.  I second the motion that you have to have Ethiopian while in DC but I don't have an opinion on which place in Adams Morgan is good anymore, it's been too long.

You could check Chowhound if you need more websurfing to do:
http://www.chowhound.com/midatlantic/boards/dc/dc.html
In fact someone just posted a request for Dupont-area suggestions, maybe there will be some interesting responses.

Teaism = badness. At least for me because I don't like tea.

If Courthouse is doable there's a mexican place called Guajillo between Courthouse and Rosslyn that is pretty authentic. Or at least my mexican friends tell me. Lauriol Plaza in Adam's Morgan is pretty good too.

Sadly the best indian is at a placed called Bajara way out in Ashburn.

Wow, good gravy!  Thanks for all the tips -- keep them coming!  Unfortunately my midwestern tongue can't handle Mexican food or anything too spicy -- so I have to be careful of Indian and Chinese as well.  But I'd definitely love to do a zoo trip and then supper afterwards.  Let me plan the rest of my trip and we'll see how much time I have on Sunday.  It would be great if Mite and V could come down.  Maybe Doomglobe can make it, too...hey, Jough, you know you want to join us...it's not *that* far...

Who else?  Bozack, can you afford a bus ticket?

Egad.  Even Cantonese?
Title: Ache-Head DC Field Trip
Post by: jay-ell on February 06, 2004, 04:15:54 am
Cantonese is fine.  I like savory, rich foods, even highly seasoned -- especially garlic and ginger -- but for some reason, hot peppery flavors bother me.  Chili peppers, cayenne pepper, etc.  I can eat small doses of chipotles (if it's combined with something creamy or cheesy) and I use red peppers all the time, but green peppers neither taste nor smell good to me.  I do use chili oil in cooking, since it's an essential ingredient in many asian dishes, and I add cayenne to recipes when it's called for, but I start with half the normal amount and add more to taste.  Paprika, on the other hand, is fine in any amount -- even the hot Hungarian variety.

Odd, I know.  It's just a pepper thing for me.

Also, I can't stand tomatoes in any solid form.  Purees are OK, but diced, stewed, sundried, or otherwise served in slices, pieces, or chunks is a big no-no.  I used to be a highly picky eater, but spicy peppers and tomatoes are two of the few remaning bastions of my pickiness.

Also, broccoli.  Plegh.

This makes me sad.  Tomatoes are the worlds greatest food.  I love them and eat them at every opportunity.  Fresh from the vine season is fast approaching.  It's the best time of the year.  What's my favorite time of the year?  Christmas? Halloween?  Hell no, it's when the tomatoes are vine ripe.

If you want a more proper table-service place, go to Haandi in Falls Church.

Agree on Teaism--I'm not into tea either.  I had the nerve to go in there and ask for coffee.

Okay, kids.  I bit the bullet and bought a DC city guide, and I'm planning our weekend as we speak.  I'll be dragging Pedro through every monument, memorial, government building, and historic site I can think of on Friday before the wedding rehersal, and Sunday afternoon we'll be hitting the Smithsonium.  (Smithsonii?  Smithsones?)  But, but, on Sunday, March 7, we'll be taking the Red Line to Woodley Park around 2 PM to visit the small mammal house and everybody's favorite Wombat.  What I'd like to do is meet at the SMH, visit Wommie, see the animals, and then, when she gets off work at 3, we can all see the rest of the animals for a few hours.  It's my understanding that the zoo buildings close at 4:30 while the grounds stay open 'til 6, so I was thinking that we could hit up Meskerem for an early supper somewhere between 5 and 5:30.  After that, Pedro and I will probably take the metro back towards the Mall to see the monuments again -- I've only seen them during the day and I hear Lincoln is particuarly spectacular after dark.  Anyone wishing to accompany us is welcome, as long as you promise not to laugh at my elaborate timetables and color-coded maps.

I swear, I missed my calling as a concierge.

I was just about to say, it's scary how much organisation you put into things.
I just go places and see what happens, but then I'm really lazy and have no memory, so I tend to even forget what things there are to do.

Well, yea...

Anyway, hope it'll be good and you have to steal me a naked mole rat or something.
Title: Ache-Head DC Field Trip
Post by: wombat on February 17, 2004, 12:05:16 am
That sounds fine to me.  In reality there isn't that much to see after the buildings close at 4.30, but if you're thinking of dinner at 5 or 5.30 you'd be leaving around then anyway.

Can anyone who's thinking of coming let me know here or by PM?  I need to make sure my boss knows the time and date and a rough number of people.

I'm going. I also took of Monday just in case (and because I have a crapton of leave this year. A metric crapton).

I think it's technically Smithsonian Institution museums or some such phrasing.

And the Lincoln is even cooler now because they triangulated the step where MLK gave the speech and put an inscription there. But that's better in the day.

I am professionally obligated to point out that you may only keep a mole rat in your pocket if your pocket is large enough to contain a couple of dozen of them.  They need to live in colonies, if they are separated from the colony they will die.

I have never seen the monuments at night.  I've only lived here for ten years, I've been, um, busy I guess.  I've seen pictures.

Hmm, according to Mapquest, ATL to DC is a 10.5 hour drive. For me, should be more like 9 hours. I'm ALL ABOUT this. Choop - wanna share a ride?

Also, is there a cheap-ass motel within the city anyplace that's not too shady? I'm really a Motel 6 kinda girl.

And the monuments at night rawk, as the kids say. Especially the Korean War Memorial. Freaked the living crap out of me when I was 15.

There are a bunch right around the Crystal City mall (in VA) which should be quite metro-accessible. In fact several hotels there are connected to it via a tunnel system.

March 7.

Woo!  How exciting!

We're taking the train from Raleigh.  It's about 5 hours by car, and the same by train.

I've just been sent a love note via network printer.  I'd best go...

It's about 8 hours to Raleigh from Philly - not a pleasant trip.  Last time I rode the train there it was the beginning of October and the leaves were all gorgeous.  I should've brought my computer with me, though.  The novel and notepad just weren't doing it for me.

The train from here to D.C. is about three hours.  Not bad, but it's only about two hours by car.  Don't ask me why I can drive it faster than the train can go.

Anyway, with the old eyes getting worse I can't really drive.  So it'll have to be the train.

Where has jldunston been lately?  Has the snow cut off her Internet access?

I am still expecting you all at 2 next Sunday.  You can all meet on the bench in front of the Small Mammal house, the one around the anteater statue.  Maybe we need to figure out how we will recognize each other.  We've seen pictures of jl and Pedro.  I will post a picture if I can find one that isn't too embarrassing, but basically I will be the wombatty little person in the zoo uniform looking vaguely panicked at meeting you all. I guess I should send you all my phone number at work in case someone can't make it.

Note that in the unlikely event that the weather stays this nice till next Sunday, you will NOT be able to find parking at that hour on a Sunday and should really take Metro.

If you start at the main entrance and follow the main path, you can't miss it.  If it is very crowded and/or you are a slow walker, 15 minutes from the entrance maybe.  Longer if you stop at the Elephant House to look at the capybaras of course.

As for dinner I think there was an earlier post where jl picked out an Ethiopian restaurant.  I will probably have to go home and come back out and meet you, but I have the day off so I don't have to get home early afterwards.  Of course, I will still have been up since 5.30 so you may have to keep poking me to keep me awake.

Yeah, we'll probably not be going to the Ethiopian restraurant with ya'll.  My umfriend has some special dietary requirements (i.e. is afraid of foreign food) so we may eat elsewhere and then catch up with you, or else eat lunch before we meet with you and dinner after.

Okay, well, we'll plan to get to the zoo by 1pm, that way we can wander around and leisurely find the group.

Ahem. An umfriend is an individual with whom is in an uncertain confirmation state -- something different from a friend, but not in any sort of official relational status. As in "this is Austin, my... um... friend."

Also highly useful in seventh grade as a term for those friends upon whom you have raging crushes.

Aw man I wish I had an umfriend, that sounds like the best.  That's like the magical time in a relationship when your having all the sex, but you don't have to do any of the icky stuff yet like meet the parents or go to the ballet.

I don't have serious relationships.  I have the peculiarity of having women fall in love with me whom I want really little to do with, and have the misfortune of falling in love with women who think of me like a brother.

And I resolved long ago not to act on my internet crushes for more than ten minutes - but I'm sure there are private places in the National Zoo somewhere...

Wow. The rock Hyrax looks like, well, if a family of gophers inbred themselves for about 20 generations, then one of them mated with a similairly genetically challenged beaver, then the offspring put on 50 lbs, then sat around never moving, eating pizza, watching Fox, and yelling in it's best hick accent 'stay off of mah damn yard you filthy yunguns'.

Oh my god.

I should warn the Field Trip patrons then all that we don't have the echidna anymore, and I never saw its c*ck in all the years I knew it so I wouldn't have been able to show it to you anyway.  The echidna has moved to Los Angeles to use his c*ck to better advantage - he was alone here, but in LA he's supposed to be getting it on with all kinds of fine southern Californian echidna ladies.

Those mole rats are profoundly unnerving. It's the teeth -- definitely the teeth.

Also, the rock hyrax appears to be what happens when the Damaraland mole rat forsakes its brave predatory heritage and becomes fat and complacent. Or possibly the adult form of the rodent of which the Damaraland mole rat is the larva -- either or.

I'm back.

I thought I told y'all I was going to be away last week?

We're on for , I'm still planning on Meskerem afterwards (that's the Ethiopian place, supposedly very good but I have to admit I've never had Ethiopian before and I, myself, find it mildly frightening).  Y'all will know me when you see me, I will be the one suddenly remembering that the reason I have internet friendships is that I'm terrified of people, and attempting to hide behind a goateed man who is desparately trying to reassure me that this message board is most likely not populated by axe murderers.  Alternatively, look for someone breathing into a paper bag.

Also, I just got new glasses.  They're purple.

I plan to hit the actual zoo at 2, which puts me at the SMH by quarter after (if Wombat is to be believed *sidelong glance*).  We'll wait 'til about 2:25 for any stragglers.  Can we get a final head count on who's in?  PM me -- it's easier to count that way.

Wombat has short legs but walks real fast.  However, she has a very poor sense of time, and has no idea how long you will be sidetracked at the capybaras.  Or perhaps you will be waiting to go see them with her afterwards.

I will PM you all with my phone number at work and my real name.  While I would just as soon be called Wombat, if anyone at work hears this, I will never hear the end of it.

This probably only applies to JL but the metro system has a poorly advertised Day Pass. It's like $6 for unlimited rides for one calendar day. Normally it costs $1.20 to get from any stop in the city to any other stop in the city (more during rush hour) and it goes up from there if you go into VA or MD.

You can buy them at the fancier kiosks (they are labeled "pass/farecards" as opposed to just "farecards" and usually have more buttons) or online. You one day doesn't start until you actually feed the pass into a turnstile so you can buy them ahead of time.

You might want to check the maps and consider your days. Because if you only take a couple of trips it would be cheaper to just pay the fares. But if you'll be ridin' all over the dang place sightseeing it would probably be worth it. Especially because DC cabs are a tremendous rip-off.

We have at least 3 days through which we'll be relying heavily on the metro.  I calculated estimated metro fares for these days when I made my budget, but I'll have to look them over again to be sure.  It may be more cost-effective to drop a couple of $20s in the machine tomorrow afternoon and get two farecards to use all weekend.  But I'll do the math again tonight with this new information.

Man, oh, man, I'm neurotic.

FYI since they raised the rates you no longer get a bonus for putting in $20.

Or, if that makes no sense, until last year if you put a 20 in the machine you actually got $22 or so of credit. But they took that away last summer. So now $20 is just $20.

Aww.  Well the vison in my eye has actually come back a bit on its own - it can't do anything close to what one would call "seeing" - but I can see Vaselineated shapes of light and stuff now.  Dr. Second Opinion said that's a good sign and was 100% confident that the old-school procedure should work just fine.

Meh.  I went through the five stages of grief over my cyclopshood over a few hours.  Anger is the one that keeps coming back, followed up promptly by hella depression.

So now that it's gone, I'm all for just doing whateverthefuck I can to get it back.  I mean, the failure of any future procedure could almost not possibly make it worse - so I'm hopeful that the effects can be reversed.

The docs have been right about everything so far - just that I happened to be in that 20% - it was a 1 in 5 shot of this happening - you roll the dice, you can't really blame anyone else for the outcome.

I mean, my sight was failing anyway - at least this way I won't look back 5 years from now and say "I wish I'd try to do something back when there was a possibility of doing it - now I'm a blind motherfucker like Lt. Col. Frank Slade (retired).

I've taken to saying "hoo-ha" but since I'm only out one eye I just say "hoo."

Took me until that to work out who Slade was.
Now the image of you sat saying 'hoo' at things is gonna stick!
(So it's your left eye yea?)

Even considering the outlook, and the logical and wise one, that it was best to take the chance before it was too late to, I still would have been too scared to do so. I really am about the biggest wimp in the world when it comes to things like that. Christ, I need to go to the dentist about a broken tooth I have, and it just gets worse and I still can't muster up the courage to even make an appointment. I think I need some Ativan!

My fingers are firmly crossed about the old-school technique they gonna try. Hope it sorts out. Any idea what you gonna do regarding the other one if your currently fucked up eye does get fixed up?
I feel that may be where the ballsy decision comes in!
Though again, I guess if they fix the one out, the other would deteriorate and thus the chance of fixing that would be worth it too. And the cumulative probability of both fuck*ng up is... well, probably fairly remote.

Anyhoo, at least with the number of dropouts for the field-trip I feel slightly less left out!

We're back.  We actually arrived on time, but didn't get up early enough to see the Capitol yesterday.  Actually, we got up pretty early, but it took us a lot longer to pack than we'd expected.  We did, however, spend some time in the American History Museum, which Pedro found far more fascinating than he'd expected.  (Highlights: Deep Blue, an exhibit on Alan Turing and Enigma decryption, and Julia Child's kitchen.)

The train ride was considerably nicer this time around, but we're still sort of recovering.  Pedro had to work today and I've been looking at our finances to see how much this trip has put us into debt.  (It's not pretty.)  But, I really had a great time -- especially meeting you guys -- and I hope we can have another event soon.  We're already talking about going up Philadelphia way this spring...we'll keep everyone posted.  ;)
