So he's back to the phone calling again.
Is he smoking hash? Because this shit is just
RE-HASHED.
-
My only thought: what in the hell?
hopefully it'll go back to the former storyline tomorrow
-
Hey guys, cut Onstad some slack. He is not Shakespeare. And Ray is not Hamlet.
I mean, I took the same view,
panels 1-3. Huhn, more prank calls.
panel 4. ten inch monkey, hehe (wait a minute I don't get it)
panels 5-7. I am impressed by Ray's charisma. Ralph laps it up
panel 8. I am traumatized but I can't stop laughing. Dear god, why can't I stop laughing!?!
And now I realize that analyzing a comic panel by panel just takes all the funny out of it. Until I glance back at panel 7 and giggle about Ralph's jeans. There's always an aftershock. So I refute today's alt text...
Onstad IS Shakespeare, and you better just accept his comic brilliance. Storylines be damned!
-
Easy, peoples.
This re-hashed shit tastes good. The whole Phillipe for Pres line was battling with Nate Small for snores.
Come on. Seriously. Anybody? Anybody? No?
...and the interweb had to tell me who in the hell Drabble was, and it was still funn(i)y(er).
-
...and the interweb had to tell me who in the hell Drabble was, and it was still funn(i)y(er).
Yeah, I think that was the issue on why it wasn't funny for me... I don't get the paper (used to, but I dunno how long this comic existed) therefore didn't know who Drabble was.
-
the last panel is incredible. the thought process required in thinking how the hell drabble (i don't know about this, i'm in the uk) hasn't hung up, even by panel 7, is amazing. ray may not be hamlet, but he's certainly prospero.
-
I thought it was pretty funny, then I found out what Drabble was, and now I love it. For some reason, I found the prank-call strips to be maybe the funniest ever.
-
I'm too lazy to google, who is this guy? I just substituted Lileks in my head and that worked pretty well.
-
I'm too lazy to google, who is this guy? I just substituted Lileks in my head and that worked pretty well.
Now THAT'S funny!
-
I would have thought the most obvious next place to go would have been Ziggy or Family Circus. I was surprised neither of those got calls in the last round.
Too obvious, maybe?
-
It's funnier if it's Lileks.
Rehashed, but what the hell, I enjoyed it. There was certainly an element of ambush value -- "hey, he's pranking people again!"
Might have gone over better had the comic strip been better-known, though.
-
Yeah, I had no idea who Drabble was. He sucks enough to merit pranking, though.
What do you think Ray thinks of that Garfield live-action movie coming out?
-
Man oh man this is some gooood rehash. If ever there was a comic strip that deserved to be cranked it would be Drabble. I hope he pranks the Grizzwells next. Or For Better or for Worse. He could brag to the human characters about the time he boned Farley.
-
He needs to prank Marvin next. Sweet Christ that comic sucks so hard. That hack has fallen so far as to write his comic as if the characters were reading another comic, because he realizes that Marvin exhausted the storylines about, oh, after the first comic. And they're never, absolutely never, amusing - in any way. They periodically put the comics in our local paper up to votes - and Marvin just keeps chugging along. I'd rather our comic section was just one enormous Drabble than have Marvin in it anywhere. At least Drabble is a slightly funny name.

Surely a fair few bonus Champagne Comedy points must be awarded for the material contained within the official-lookin' Drabble website (http://www.comics.com/comics/drabble/index.html), which I am counting as part of today's Achewood because I never would have seen it otherwise, and because I'm nice. Benevolent, you might say. In any case, the comic's nothing remarkable, but it's the About Drabble page where it all really starts to shine. "The zany mishaps of his offbeat characters" is a phrase we just don't hear enough of; I'd take it over "a smart, sexy comedy" any day.
Also of note is the Cursors page, which, after inviting you to download and install Comet Cursor software (and, I'd imagine, join the internet's aristocracy by doing so), offers this stern warning:
When you select a Drabble cursor, you're agreeing that you're being granted a non-exclusive, non-transferable license to use the Drabble character only in connection with the operation of the cursor in your own personal computer, and that you won't copy or make any other uses of the character without our prior written consent.
So violently knocking your penis to the side with enough force to send the Ralph Drabble Comet Cursor through the edge of your monitor and into our world, and then, oh, I don't know, taking it outside and parading it through the streets would be frowned upon.
CLEARLY THERE ISN'T ENOUGH ART IN OUR SCHOOLS
-

What do you think Ray thinks of that Garfield live-action movie coming out?
Oh sweet jeebus say it ain't so....
I think it's interesting that noone seems to have ever heard of Drabble before.
How many comics (newspaper that is) can really make a decent movie? In the 40's there were a pile of Dagwood and Blondie movies but I don't know if the movies came first....anyone know the answer to this?

After he gets done with Marvin he needs to move onto Fred Basset, then Hi and Lois, and to top it off he should hit BC. Now there's a comic so bad it made the news.
-
Oh Jesus BC. I hate to say it, but very likely "worst comic ever" - especially the shoving his religious beliefs down my throat every morning. Also, Comet Cursor will rape your computer. Once it is there, it can not be removed - at least that's my experience.
-
I can't believe no one wants to see Ray lay into Doonesbury or Prince Valliant.
Personally, I'd like to see Ray put the new "Opus" strip out of its misery. It's no "Bloom County" - hell, it's not even "Outland."
-
Three words:
Funky.
Winker.
Bean.
'nuff said.
-
Or For Better or for Worse. He could brag to the human characters about the time he boned Farley.
Oh, now that would be truly evil.
I actually sometimes read Drabble, sort of unintentionally, because it's next to another strip that I do read, and sometimes there's a duck in it and my eyes are irresistably drawn to it. (Because any joke with a duck in it is funny, right? Or am I thinking of a chicken?) And yet, I had no idea what was being referred to till I clicked on that link to the strip's website. That's how memorable it is.
-
Why the hate for Doonsbury?
-
I can't disagree with the idea of B.C. being pranked; it needs it something desperate. My lord.
That said, I do have a soft spot for some of the comics on Asherdan's semi-comprehensive list, most of them because I read them as a wee tot and thus thought they were funny. (And "Hagar the Horrible" because it's a comic about Vikings and thus begs the question of "who in the world came up with this idea, and why?!")
That, and there are still clipped "Zits" cartoons sitting around the V-Adore family estate, because my parents were big "Zits" fans while I was in high school. Sigh.
-
First of all, I didn't ask.
And secondly, I haven't even heard of half of those comics.
Ziggy would be impossible to put down. He already hates himself.
The Family Circus would be a good one, but who is Ray going to beat on? Billy? PJ?
No, it has to be a strip that is hatefully unfunny yet surprisingly successful enough to warrant an annual calendar, prime time teevee specials, and lunch boxes.
Are comics even that popular with kids today? I mean, I haven't seen Garfield shit in like, ten years.
-
Making fun of the Family Circus is old-skool web humor. The DFC was IT in about '99 or so. Surely I don't need to link to this, but here it is anyway. (http://www.medmeta.dyndns.org/dfc/)
-
I read the paper [Globe & Mail, we're good leftist Canadians]'s comics page with closer attention today. Drabble has much more meaning for me now, and I'll even be able to remember its name. Heaven knows I don't speak unilaterally for the Youth of Today, but I certainly don't read comics... except for Eightball et al.
As for Family Circus sucking, I agree that it's pretty old news. Even Charles Schultz ripped into them.
-
Luann: Actually, a coworker and I really enjoyed reading this comic and then making up filthy stories about her and the other folks in the strip.
Thx to AugustWest; I thought that the DFC had been permanently expunged from the internet long ago due to Bil Keane's having set lawyers on the creator much like crazed dogs. Also, after reading the DFC, the Family Circus has become slightly less unbearable.
The Anchorage paper gets the most shitty strips available. The only one worth reading is Mutts.
-

Who else reads tons of actual "comic book" comics, i.e. Hellboy, Fantastic Four, Capt. America, 1602, etc? Who actually went out and bought plastic sleeves and little cardboard sheets for all of them last week? Who organized them alphabetically last night? WHO IS A SAD, SAD MAN?
Me. All of them. Me.
-
You just bagged and boarded your comix last WEEK? Dude, how the fuck have you been storing them up until this point?
I got rid of most of my childhood comic books during my last move - but I still have some for sentimental value. The only ones I have that are worth anything are the Sandman originals, and even they aren't worth much. Maybe I'll eBay the whole lot one of these days (I still have the graphic novels).

I guess one of those imponderables would be how do you prank call some cavemen? Maybe Ray could give a letter to that big turtle and he could carry it to BC. That would be funny. How ironic is it that the one shamelessly Christian cartoon is set a few million years before Christ? Also, I don't remember it always being that way....was it?

No, it wasn't. At least according to Cho (http://www.libertymeadows.com)
"*SEPTEMBER 13
Original: Last Panel. Ralph swears off booze and drugs, and decides to be a Born-again Christian. Ralph is baptized by Johnny Hart's BC characters. Ralph yells, "I'M CLEAR!" My syndicate really flipped out on this one. My syndicate is Creators Syndicate. It syndicates my strip, Liberty Meadows AND Johnny Hart's strip, BC. For those out there who don't know about Johnny Hart and his strip, ol' Johnny is a hardcore Born-again Christian. He became a Born-again about 10 years ago. His strip, BC, was once a very funny strip in its hey days, but drastically changed to preachy fire and brimstone Jesus strip when Hart was reborn. Anyway, Johnny Hart is Creators Syndicate's most vital cartoonist, and I'm not. The President of Creators Syndicate came down on me hard. He simply refused to run my BC spoofing strip, unless I changed it. I, of course being young, dumb, and full of sperm, didn't back down. I told 'em to go to Hell with Johnny. Well, my syndicate in not so many words then said that it was willing to let Liberty Meadows lose newspapers rather than offend Johnny Hart (cash cow). They said that it will run a completely blank strip for that day. I, of course, blinked and backed down. I replaced the BC characters with Will B. Dunn (Kudzu) and the country preacher from Snuffy Smith comic strip. The moral of this story is "Don't screw with Jesus"."
-
BC was hella funny in it's early days, but Hart ran out of ideas long before he became preachy.
Doonesbury was totally awesome too in the first run. But Trudeau took about a year off, and when Doonesbury returned the characters had aged about 10 years (they were perpetual college students for the first run of about 6-8 years) and it has sucked virtually from that point forward.

Sacred cow killing...
I think most people agree that Peanuts is the best cartoon evah!! Totally impressive 50 year run. No one wants to admit though that it sort of blew chunks the last 15-20 years or so.
Most deserving of a call from Ray Luann. (http://www.comics.com/comics/luann/index.html)
Honerable mention Nancy (http://www.comics.com/comics/nancy/). Not because it's bad; I mean it's bad alright, but did you know it has a serious cult following? (http://www.interestingideas.com/ii/nanfan.htm)
this is interesting too, a card game (http://www.scottmccloud.com/inventions/nancy/nancy.html) based on Nancy which includes this paragraph "Ernie Bushmiller's comic strip "Nancy" is a landmark achievement: A Comic so simply drawn it can be reduced to the size of a postage stamp and still be legible; an approach so formulaic as to become the very definition of the "gag-strip"; a sense of humor so obscure, so mute, so without malice as to allow faithful readers to march through whole decades of art and story without ever once cracking a smile."

I think I'm going to have to agree with Onstad (http://www.blacktable.com/finley030409.htm) on this one.
Comic strips suck, they suck so hard. They suck in the worst, most shameful way. Comic strips are such incredible formulaic garbage, with a few excellent exceptions that I will not list here.

Sadly, as with so many other things, it wasn't always so.

Why the hate for Doonsbury?
because everyone here thinks they are superior to all forms of popular culture.
of course i love all you guys, but dammit it's true.

You should see my Winamp playlist and/or my bookshelf. But at least I can play You Don't Know Jack.

What is this "Popular Culture" you speak of? Must be beneath me. Plebians.

Oh so not true. Wait'll you get my mixdisc. It's got The Dixie Chicks on it 'fr fucks sake.
Country and Western music is like Comics. Like Onstad says, "it sucks in the worst, most shameful way. It's such incredible formulaic garbage, with a few excellent exceptions that I will not list here." Well except I just listed one here.

Hey, didn't your post mention Hey Ya not two seconds ago? ..I had a comment to tie the thoughts together, so I clicked back in.. of course, the link I wanted to link isn't available today (I viewed it yesterday though; it does exist!), so I will just mention it:

Well it did, but I thought of something more interesting to say more relevant to my love of pop culture. But I was going to repost it, but now you've gone and blown it.

I'll list a few.
George Jones
Hank Williams (Sr.!)
Patsy Cline
Bill Monroe
Bob Wills
Steve Earle
Grandpa Jones
OK, maybe not Grandpa Jones.

I picked up a Grandpa Jones CD at the pawn shop. I had no idea there were so many songs about hunting dogs.

Leave the banjo player on the list, August.
That is all.
-
How many of said huntin' dog songs include the much lamented death of the dog? I'm guessing more than half.
-
How many of said huntin' dog songs include the much lamented death of the dog? I'm guessing more than half.
Well let's see, we got 'The Huntin's Over For Tonight' which is really just about huntin' but the dogs play a role in it. In one verse they tree a Bear and the menfolk thought it was a 'coon. Hilarity ensued. There's 'Old Rattler's Pup' Where Old Rattler is the greatest hunting dog of all time, but he's dead from the outset. But it's a happy song about his pup who looks like he's gonna be as good as the old one. Last but not least there is 'Old Towser' who is a ghost dog. You see 'When the moon's just right in the holler at night you can still hear old Towser bay." He died of old age, but this dog wasn't much of a hunter like Old Rattler's Pup. Apparently he "couldn't catch a 'coon who was chewing on his leg."
So I guess the answer to your question is 1/2 or 2/3rd's depending on how you look at it, but none of the songs are tear jerkers. It's really hard to jerk tears with a banjo.

You only like him because he's a noted cook.
I suppose you're a big Justin Wilson fan as well.

To momentarily re-hijack this thread: best Doonesbury character? Legume, Duke's zombie alter-ego. Also, you have to give it up for Ch. Brown, what with the first comic featuring Sherman saying "Good ole' Charlie Brown . . . oh how I hate him."
Also, Flatt and Scruggs. (Note: not actually country, but oh-so-good.)
-
Grandpa Jones was really a cook?
You mean people really DID say "What's for dinner, Grandpa?"
Holy crap, I've been reduced to Hee Haw jokes.
-

I thought it was "how I pity him?" Or am I wrong?

Did you ever know about the massive Flatt and Scruggs/Bill Monroe hatred thing that went on, apparently for most of the 20th century? If you read that Bill Monroe biography (damned if I know the title right now), there's like a full chapters-worth of documentation of how much they hated each other.
I found this all very interesting. However, I not only play mandolin, but also rarely go outside, so your mileage may vary.

It's all about suspenders and porkpie hats...
I do like me Justin Wilson grub, I gaaaron-tee...
Did that Grandpa Jones Album you found happen to have his version of "I'm my Own Grandpa" on it?
And for V-Adore....it was definitely, really, "How I hate him".
-
And for V-Adore....it was definitely, really, "How I hate him".
I stand corrected. I believe I was corrupted by Andrew Farago's "T-Nuts," which used "how I pity him" as its punchline.
Mea culpa?

Look, we all have our own perfect examples of stuff-the-world-should-appreciated-never-having-existed.
My canidates for being expunged (since Jough kinda asked*):
big long list
My point here is, I don't wanna put up with Ray crankin' everything worthy of the crank. I just want to imagine that he'll get around to 'em in his own good time.
*Gotta blame someone since it can't be MY fault!
yeah, he already did nancy, and doonesbury is good (as is zits) but anyhow, the reason that alot of those comics are bad is because they are put to the test of coming up with new material every day, and after a couple years it starts getting hard. really hard. so you rehash a couple old jokes, with a new spin. Some comics do it better than others, but you will find that EVERY comic does this. you name a comic that doesnt repeat a joke after two years, and I will give you a big fat prize you can eat. seriously, everyone in the webcomic forums is always looking for something new and different, why cant anyone just enjoy something for being GOOD. I mean this alice white 2002 cabernet sauvignon is the same australian wine it has been all year, but I still keep getting it when I dont want to risk having a bad wine, because I know its damn friggin good. okay done.
edit:
oops, didnt notice those other two pages of thread. sorry to go back on topic...
