There are many great Canadian musicians. You don't have to be greedy. Really, there are. I'm drunk, but I'm right.

Are we to assume that that is in fact Mr. Pat Travers with his hand on your chestal area?  Because I'm doing damn good to remember who the hell Pat Travers was (is) at all, much less what he looks like.

Actually Pat Travers is about as Canadian as Neil Young.  He hasn't lived in Canada since he split for London at 17 years of age.  He's been living in Tampa Florida for the last 20 years or so.

I just got back from partying with some real Canadians, The Broken Social Scene from Toronto.  Dammit this show punished!

I thought Starlight might come out, but she didn't.  That's too bad, but you fucked up little sister, cause the Broken Social Scene were awesome.

Heh... I replied to your PM before reading threads...
well, I would've gone if I had had further notice and a ride... it takes forever for me to make plans, yo (the tragedy of not being able to drive).

Anyway, glad to know it was a good show ..nice pictures :)

Anyway, yeah there's a few good modern bands from Canada... The Weakerthans, Do Make Say Think, Godspeed You! Black Emperor... probably there's more in my collection, but that's off the top of my head :D

Broken Social Scene are indeed rad- I hope to end up seeing them as I live about 4 hours away from Toronto... I also like Godspeed You Black Emperor!, but I think the Weakerthans are teeerrrrible.  I saw them a few years ago as the opener's opener at a show, and I used to like Propagandhi, the band that spawned them, but eeugh.  Just not an emo person I guess.

Oh yeah, speaking of Godspeed.. forgot to mention A Silver Mt. Zion which I recently started listening to.  hm... well, their new EP 'Pretty Little Lightning Paw' I got off soulseek last week is good.

and as for The Weakerthans ...I don't think of them as emo :(
...I s'pose we all have our opinion on genres though... I just call it indie in general... don't go further than that.

JorgeFabregas - yessuh, I love their new one... it's called 'Reconstruction Site' though.

I figured you would say you hated them because they are totally mainstream and no self respecting indy rocker such as yourself would be caught dead listening to corporate rock shit like the Tragically Hip.

As for me, I think their alright.  They put on a killer show at any rate.  I don't own any of their music and I only went to the show to make a Canadian Friend of mine jealous.  She's like their biggest fan, and she's seen them play like 10 times, but only ever in hockey stadiums or other such huge venues.  When they played here in a 500 capacity bar I knew I it would burn her britches up if I went and took a bunch of pictures.  Anyway, i'm glad I did because as I've stated they do put on a great show and also I met lots of fine Canadian folks.

Another vote for GYBE.

They're no Rush, though.

Rush is playing Portland for their 30th anniversary tour pretty soon. I'm hoping they'll drag John Rutsey out for a set - whatever happened to that guy?

Here's a novel idea: when someone mentions Geddy Lee, rather than listening to the Mars Volta, maybe listen to, I don't know...RUSH!  It'll be a lot like listening to the Mars Volta, except with good songs and instruments that are in tune and played well!

Rush is bad, yes. But Rush (today's Tom Sawyer mean mean brine deener neener neener)  is sweet relief compared to Styx. As long as no one starts racking on about how Styx is their all time favorite Musical Experience Ever, I do not give a single shred of a good goddamn what you claim to like or dislike.

Just know this: being subjected to all seventy-four minutes of a homemade "Best of Styx" CD is really and truly worse than you'd ever imagine it being. It's like being buried up to your neck in cement with itchy corneas.

Because, well, to paraphrase the perfect summation of Styx, listening to Rush would be similarly like being buried up to my neck in, well, sand maybe, and only my eyelids would be itchy.
Although maybe some ants might turn up.

I really don't like them! The Mars Volta on the other hand...

Oh Yeah?  How about this -- Some YAP brought in a "Best of Foreigner" CD to the workout room at our gym.  Now about every other time I go to lift, I get to grunt along with "I Wanna Know What Love Is (I Want You To Show Me)."  Meh.

While scrolling through the music channels recently, I had the misfortune of seeing Foreigner doing an unplugged version of "Hot Blooded."  That hurt.

While reading a page on Something Awful, I found this timely quote:

At the core of their beings, a lot of indie-sheep really just want to listen to Pink Floyd like their dads. However, it's seen as direly uncool among indie circles to listen to prog-rock. Therefore, the indie scene had to invent its own hideous bastardization of prog-rock in order to satisfy the dark unconscious urges of all the hipsters out there. This is the only possible explanation for the success of The Mars Volta.

I fuck*ng hate Pink Floyd. I do on the other hand like the phenomenally better King Crimson (not the more recent stuff), so it can hardly be said that I like TMV because I can't stand prog. There are other bits of original prog I dig too.
Damn.

Oh, and come on - Zappa, as prog as you can get on occasion, and one of my all time favourite's, as well as my top guitarrist of everness.

Hey, Styx was my first concert EVAR!  Rupp Arena in 1978, The Babies opened.  Of course, I think I quit taking Styx seriously in about 1979, but that's OK.

And I will admit to owning Double Vision on 8-track.  And I kinda like hearing Blondie now that it's not so overexposed.

But Journey always set my teeth on edge.

Growing up and growing old are actually nearly the same thing when it comes to musical curmudgeonliness.  I got rid of Styx and Journey about the same time I routinely stood up to pee.

Hee.

Actually, I'm not even that huge a Rush fan, but I saw some of their recent concert DVD and was mightily impressed by how much ass they kicked for a bunch of guys who have to be in their fifties by now.  They've certainly aged more gracefully than, say, Van Halen.

King Crimson, of course, crap all over them from a height of several miles.   Floyd, eh,  love The Wall, enjoyed the Delicate Sound of Thunder video, that's about it for me.  Zappa's beyond prog, he's got his own thing going on.

I've seen Bon Jovi twice, through no fault of my own, and must say that they really put their all into performing.  I still don't own any of their records, but I'm not a hater.

Don't Stop Believing, JL, that's all I can say.  No matter how much anyone may criticize your tastes, just Hold On To That Feeling...

I've got very mixed feelings about The Prog Issue, as a certified indie geek.  I like Barretty Pink Floyd, but I find the rest of it embarassing to listen to.  Not that I don't, for most of my friends are hippie-ish to one extent or another, but Piper at the Gates of Dawn (despite it having the Worst Name Ever) is the only album I listen to on my own time.

And I do on occasion dig King Crimson.

And while we're on the prog-rock tip: Nursery Cryme by Genesis is quite a record.  Especially "The Musical Box."  Heartfelt and emotional, in a genre that 's not often noted for those qualities.

That is all.  For now.

A lot of people with great taste in music (This Group) are losing a lot of cred by hating on a lot of great music.

Just because you've heard them on the radio 129,412 times (this week), and you can't possibly squeeze any pleasure out of hearing any longer, doesn't diminish the fact that Pink Floyd kicks nine kinds of ass.  If you don't like them because they are the most popular band ever, or you are embarrased by their inter-band squabling, well that's just silly now.  Cos that has nothing to do with the music.

Even if you can't get into Rush, and I'll admit they ain't everybody's cup of tea, you have to at least admire their prowess as musicians.  C'mon Slink, you know Geddy Lee is a bad ass.

'79 is when Mr. *****o came out, August, everybody stopped taking Styx seriously after that.  And it's hard to defend Styx (or Journey, or Foreigner) because they aren't nearly as good as they are popular, but they put out a few pretty good tunes in their day.  Their just not that bad.

The Mars Volta is the current band that the critics loves to hate.  They've been tagged with a "prog" label.  A label that doesn't really fit them, but that is where they've been pigenholed.  I don't know how prog came to be a derogutory term anyway.  there's lots of kick ass prog rock to be heard.

These are just opinions, we all have 'em.  Although personally I'd rather hear about music you love than hate.

Think fast, which would you rather hear Foreigner's Hot Blooded or Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA?

Now if you'll excuse me i'll return to listening to T-Rex.

That would be a wash for me, to be honest with you, but at least Hot Blooded doesn't get trotted out on a yearly basis to a specific shedule. What would a patriotic laser show or choreographed pyrotechnics be without Lee's contribution to the landscape of American sentimental music? That would be like the early 90's without "Achy Breaky Heart", and bighaired women in blue jeans and red high-heeled pumps.

You damned kids today with your bling-bling music and all the rock stuff, it's a bunch of crap!  I remember back when we lived in the holler, we didn't have electrical instruments as such, we had to make do with a washboard and an old tack piano what we rescued from the fire!  There weren't no "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" back then, we played good music like "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."  Then we munched on some sassafras roots and went to bed at 6 in the pm because we had to get up early to whap the mule.

Sorry. Can't agree.
Pink Floyd, as Andalucia said, in their Gates of Dawn days, were good.
After that however, they just fell to Waters' pretension. He wasn't even a good writer! If you look at any Floyd material it's excessively boring, while trying desperately to be prog. C, G, E, Em, C, Am. What the fuck?
Now I'm not saying simple can't be good. Look at Nirvana say, or Jane's Addiction. But for prog it doesn't cut it.
King Crimson were essentially a bunch of extremely good musicians, with interest and history in Jazz. This allowed them far more freedom in what they were doing.
I fail to actually think of anything Floyd did that was interesting, post Barret. I have tried to like them, and I have tried to see genius in them.

T-Rex, I'll concede, they had their moments. They were never a classic, but they had their moments.

The Mars Volta, I see as prog, in some ways, because they are doing the same kind of thing as Crimson. They are shucking all idea of convention. They do what they want, when they want. They'll throw a song round halfway through, and then do what they want with it. That's all there is to make them prog, but there's nothing much more to define prog. It's just people doing what they want with music really. Any band who break down into 5 minutes of wailing sound and echoey feedback during a jazz riff laden song that hasn't followed the conventions of verse/chorus/verse, what else are you going to call them!?

But man, it just pissed me off that Floyd are considered some sort of musical visionaries when they did fuck all.

Anyway, don't mind me, I'm allowed to be excessively opinionated in here, 'cause I say so!
