I love them. Especially the color -- the extensions are this great strawbery blonde, which, when combined with my natural hair, makes my head shine like a new penny.
And the answer to your question is: three hours.
-
Oh my gosh! Only three hours? That RULES.
Bo-Derek style for the summertime is so awesome. :)
They really suit you! Just make sure that you keep your scalp moisturized. Olive oil or shea butter works well, imho.
-
Very cool, JL.
Although seeing your photo forced me to dig out this old image of myself.

Freaky hair for everyone!
-
JL, I'm curious as to why you'd do that to yourself. But whatever. Have you been happily whipping your head around to make the individual braids fly around?
Is Pedro in for a new hair whipping tonight?
-
Very nifty, JL. Me, I've affected Constantly Wearing a Fedora again in time for the summer, as I spent an afternoon outside and half the skin on my face blistered and fell off. And cause I think it looks neat. The hat, not the grotesque scarring.
-
Before I saw the long parts of the braids hanging down I thought you looked like a character from the TV show Alien Nation. I mean this in the nicest possible way - it gave me a warm nostalgic feeling.
-
I thought "good God her head looks HUGE".
In a good way, of course.
-
For some reason that picture gives me a weird Rick James vibe (like there's any other kind of Rick James vibe...)
She's a very frikky gurl
The kind you don't bring home to mutha!
You're all right, JL. You're all right.
-
Hey JL, you're an alien Rick James with a massive cranium . . . in a good way.
There's really no other way to take that - I wish people thought of me as a big-headed alien Rick James. They pretty much just think of me as a big-headed human Tobey Maguire.

Don't forget to toss in the all-important Buscemi Factor.

And, lo, the board returned to pegging as a topic for the fourth time in a week.

Thank you, all, for your comments and compliments...however strange they may have been.
My mother gasped and clapped her hand to her mouth; my father slowly and sadly shook his head, as if to ask "where did we go wrong?" They are both convinced that this is "a phase." The in-laws have yet to see me.
I love them. They make me feel young. The woman who did them told me I had more hair than she'd ever seen on a white person -- it's very thick. I've gotten several Bo Derek comments but not many Jane Child (who was my hair hero as a kid). This was a long time coming, and I couldn't be happier with the result.
-
Get a bigass tattoo on your neck. Preferably the front of your neck. They will forget all about the hair.
-
They make me feel young.
That would be because you ARE young. You lousy, lucky damn kids ya!
-
JL, the cornrows are awesome. You are the cutest thing.

"I came down on him like this... his extensions was flyin' everywhere..."
-
I admire your chutzpah, if nothing else -- I don't think I'd have the patience to get this done, so I'd end up leaving with my head half-corned. But this is really quite awesome.
-

I tried to come up with a joke incorporating the phrase "welcome to the real world" in response to this, but I couldn't quite pull it off.
-
Update: I no longer feel as if I am wearing a wig all the time. The braids have loosened up enough that I don't notice them any more. In fact, I forget when I am out in public that I have an unusual hairstyle, until I notice people looking at me strangely and remember that I'm a white girl with cornrows. I inspired a little blonde girl to stare, open-mouthed, at my swinging locks as I thumped produce at the supermarket. I also had a lengthy conversation with the African-American postal clerk about where I got my 'rows done, and don't the extensions look natural? Also, I got carded for alcohol for the first time in five years.
It occurred to me today that the answer to the inevitable question -- why? -- is the same for me as it is for most black women with braids. I got sick and tired of spending hours artificially straightening my hair, and thought the new 'do would be an attractive and low-maintenence alternative.
So far, so good.
-
I went back to Felicia for another new style.
This one, I think, suits me better. Makes my head look less round. This time it took eight solid hours with two women working on me most of that time. However, single braids are far more comfortable to wear than 'rows, right off the bat.
Oh, yeah. I'm keepin' this one a while.
-
Wow, does your scalp ache after you have this done? I can't imagine haveing someone tug on my hair for eight hours without it hurting atleast a little bit.
-
Yeah, it hurts. The cornrows hurt worse, and for several days. The braids were less painful, but more exhausting. I came home at 10 PM last night with a big fat headache. Today, however, I'm fine, and the scalp achiness is significantly less than I had expected.
-
Aw, you don't look like an alien anymore.
-
Naw, instead I look like a perfectly normal, moderately geeky individual who decided to try and look bad-ass for six weeks or so.
Do you see the look on my face in that picture? That "this is my badass face" look?
I'm in denial about the fact that I had to crop out my sweat#####.
-
I think you might want to put the song "pass the Dutchy on the left hand side" on a constant loop, mon.
-
That's your badass face?
Oh come now. Surely you can look more intimidating than that. I've seen Aunt Bee look more badass than you in that picture.
-
We all do what we can.
Seriously. I'm *that* geeky.
I'll try to have Pedro take more pics of my best badass face when I'm wearing badder-ass clothing. Maybe I'll see if my leather trousers still fit.
-
Man, that photo made a mess of my keyboard.
Very good look for you, JL.
-
I can't help but mention that Jough is in really fine form today.
Carry on, our adorable little baby animal murderer.
-
I think it's pretty cute, personally; one must always suffer for one's art, but such is life.
I sympathize with the efforts to make one's face seem less round. That's sort of why I keep letting my hair grow out -- now something like braids is sort of tempting, even though my father would probably kill me and the SO's lip would no doubt tremble petulantly from paradigm shift.
-
Sure she does. The alien on Predator had little braids just like that.

I'm sorry but you can't use badass and trousers in the same thought.

This whole thread is crying out for an embedded MIDI.

He spent all week coming up with this stuff. He's probably got it all written down in a little notebook.

I can't very well say #####, now can I?

I'll bet he does. Awww, isn't that sweet?
-
There is a madness to my methods.
The best part is that my little notebook is a tiny Composition Book with the black and white marble cover like you used to write in whence in gradeschool.
And I write in very tiny letters too, so no one can read my plans for placement and duration of the Really Bitchin' Death Ray™ that I have under a "Muppet Babies" tarp in the shed behind my house.
-
And you probably have thousands of the notebooks, all arranged by date and just filled with tiny dense writing and drawings about how CIA agents are watching you.
They are, you know.
