Well, the Pixies show was sold out before I even heard of it, so what's a feller to do? Anyway, Al Green in Seattle July 1st. It will be our honeymoon.

Huzzah!

I had tickets to a Reel Big giraffe/Eve 6 show here last night and didn't go, because I was the walking dead. Even having heard that it wasn't very good, I still feel like an ingrate.

Tweaker - 2am Wake Up Call - Damned fine! Tops 'The Attraction to All Things Uncertain' for sure, and is just such a phenomenally well put together album (Chris Vrenna - old drummer for NIN for those who haven't come across Tweaker).

Wonderful Days - Korean anime, not music, but looks stunning - best limited edition packaging ever!

More Trigun DVD's and Witch Hunter Robin.

Far Cry.

And got some more Think Of One and The Back Horn albums too.

Slink, I love you like a brother, but I meant things sort of along the lines of concert tix and such. The other would go in that long thread a little ways down on the page (New Purchases).

And two and a half hours later you are back on top of things - you have impressive powers of recuperation, my friend.

Well, shucks, thanks for the compliment squire, but I fear...
Having just made it through an 80 minute mix for a friends birthday tomorrow, which took about 2 hours after numerous restarts, it now being 11.30, and still having to pack, shave, shower and spend 5 hours on a train...

Yea.

Cheers though!

Hells yeah- listen to this line-up:

Saturday- Paul Westerburg, Patti Smith and Sonic Youth. God bless public radio, who makes this possible for $20.

June- Bonnaroo, where I'm going to try to see all of the following:
Neko Case, Wilco, Calexico (should I see them? I don't really know much about them), Nellie McKay (I like one of her tracks, that "David" song, but she seems too "cute" to really take seriously. Fer chrissake, the back of her CD says, "Nellie McKay is a proud member of P.E.T.A."), Yo La Tengo, Mike Doughty (thanks Jough), Gillian Welch, Danger penis, Los Lobos, Grandaddy, Beth Orton, My Morning Jacket (for the umpteenth time- HOME TOWN REPRESENT!), Sam Bush Band, DOC MOTHERLOVING WATSON, Ween, Burning Spear, Taj Mahal, Femi Kuti, David Byrne.
Okay, here's what pisses me off about Bonnaroo- at about half of these shows, I'm going to have to cut out early or leave late, because there are a bunch of other awesome bands playing at the same time. But at f-in' 8:30 every day, every stage but one shuts down so we can all hear Dave Matthews & Friends, The Dead, or Trey "SOMEBODY fuck*ng SHOOT ME NOW, RIGHT NOW, IN THE MIDDLE OF MY 40-MINUTE GUITAR WANK" Anastasio. EVERY STAGE. Why does Neko Case and Wilco overlap, when there's like 9 hours of SUCK you could move them into? Hey, Bonnaroo-organizing dicks, maybe not EVERYONE coming to Bonnaroo LIKES jam bands? Perchance some people equate them with a circle of hell? Anyway...

August- Lollapalooza, New York City, where I'll be seeing (well, these are the people I'm excited about seeing):
sweet baby jesus MORRISSEY, Sonic Youth (for the third time), Le Tigre, Modest penis, the Von Bondies, the Walkmen (who actually came in to my work the other day, with the French Kicks, the Flaming Lips, the Coup...
AND THE MOTHER LOVING PIXIES.

Dang, man....this is going to be a hell of a summer.

I barely even know how to respond to this.  If those great mixes you made hadn't proved yourself to be worthy of those upcoming concert experiences, I'd probably knife ya or something.

Down here in Texas we have an expression, it goes like this:  You'd bitch if you was hung with a new rope.  Which should mean I think, that you've got bigger problems than how that rope is chaffing, but actually means you shouldn't bitch about something trivial when you've got it so good.

Man that Bonaroo sounds like one hell of a good time.  I actually considered heading over that way, but decided against it.  All of those bands are great, but I would rather see them in more intimate [read comfortable] settings.  The festival scene is just too tiring at my age.

Now it's my turn.  Just announced, two nights of Bonnie "Prince" Billy.  As if that weren't enough, it's gonna be held at The Orange Show (http://www.orangeshow.org/)

Life is good sometimes.

Ha, point taken. Have fun at Bonnie Prince Billy, man. I live in his TOWN and I've never seen him, except for at a Sonic Youth concert where he sat at the bar, his back to the band, drinking all night.

Oh, and: Andalucia is gonna kill me for this, but...
The show line-up tonight was Paul Westerburg (awesome), Sonic Youth (awesome), Patti Smith (notable only in how lame it was, and how she turned a nonsensical statement about flossing into a ham-handed political aside) and Polyphonic Spree (didn't stay). However, in between Sonic Youth and Patti Smith, this dude comes out and is like, we've got a little suprise for you guys tonight...ladies and gentlemen, MR. JOHN CALE.

Needless to say, a little pee came out.

Jesus FUCK.
Making eye contact with David Bowie may have made me scream, but I am nigh on positive that I would faint if I saw John Cale.  I have been in love with the man for about 5 years which is not that long until you consider that it's almost a third of my life.
I take it all back, I hate you I hate you I hate you.
It does, however, depress me how lame Patti Smith has become.  Another former idol of mine... but she'd have to burn down several orphanages or something to overshadow the amazingness that is Land.

I was always partial to Easter.

But yeah, she's been lame for at least a decade.

Pity.

Oh, and I think you missed the boat on Polyphonic Spree.  They're not so good, but they're a LOT of fun live.  There's about a thousand of them, so just seeing them all take a small stage is worth the price of admission.

Agreed.  I found the best part about watching them live was seeing the audience's reaction change.  When they were all piling out like white-robed lemmings, my friends and I were among a very few who were cheering, as most people seemed to have no idea what was going on.  But they got a standing ovation at the end of their set.  I had thought they were super lame before I saw them live, but now I've been won over.

I'm just still bitter and pissed off that my brother offering me a friends John Cale ticket five days prior to the gig didn't pay off. Couldn't get hold of the guy whose ticket it was to get it.
And it was really good too.

All this after I almost got my brother to buy tickets for him the year we saw Orbital at the fringe. So close... Twice.

I saw Fugazi once back in the day when they played this tiny tiny little club in D.C. and me and my friend were among the 25 people there.

Great show, though.

And I also was so close while seeing Yo-Yo Ma at the Academy of Music (Philadelphia) that I could tell what time it was by reading his watch from my seat.

Good times.

And not that any of you will know who he is, but one of the best performances I've ever seen was Eric Johnson at a smallish jazz club.

Aw man. I been listening to 13 songs so much lately. I'd have loved to have seen them back in the day. And I am also now bitter 'cause I was so close to seeing Yo Yo Ma in Amsterdam when I was over there last.

I think Fugazi back then are almost onto the top ten gigs I wish I'd seen. Violent Femmes way back are probably on the list too. Kyuss are, QotSA with Grohl is there but I did see them with Lanegan which was almost as fine.

The Texan knows Eric Johnson, but he's not really a fan.  His music it soo sterile.  He's like a poor mans Joe Satriani.

Yeah, I saw them a year ago or so; the really sad part is thus:
Everyone was having a really good time, and McKaye gave this little speech about how punk is sometimes about doing stupid things and having fun. Then, during the next song, somebody stage-dives, and McKaye stops the whole show for about 5 minutes to bitch this guy out about how he could have hurt somebody. It was then I realized that age makes people lame. Other than that, the show was awesome, mainly for the line-up: the Rachel's, My Morning Jacket, Fugazi. Double yewww. Teeee. Efffff.

Ha, no, the coolest people I know are well into their fourties, although that's not really that old. I'd like to think it's just Ian McKaye.

Fugazi's a band that would have been better if they all suicided about ten years ago.

We could have remembered them before they started to suck.

I think that's the appeal of Joy Division for me - live fast, die young, leave a beautiful corpse.

There's a Punk Planet interview (not that I, uh, know about that kind of stuff) that excellently showcases the deterioration of Ian McKaye.

Why do you say things like this?

Not that any of you know who he is, but I was in the sixth row for SRV and Joe Cocker, and after Joe's set the security thugs pulled out and we ran up to the stage and I was about three feet away from the man. Little pieces of his picks were showering me. It was like touching God.

Also, I had A Via Musicon or whatever the hell it's called when it came out. It's ok.

I'm way outta my league in any music discussion on this board, but I would like to share my seeing a famous musician in a tiny club story.

In 1985 a buddy and I spent 6 weeks in Europe riding the trains around.  We went and visited a good friend of mine in Germany -- he had been an exchange student and lived near the town of Detmold, which near Hamlein (as in Pied Piper of...)  Jonathan Richman was playing a bar in Detmold one of the two nights we were there.  There were maybe 20 people in the place and we were the only Americans.  I hesitate to say that we were the only English speakers, but Jonathon started BS'ing back and forth with us from the stage.  We got to talk to him after the show for about 10 minutes.  Extremely nice guy.

We saw him again a few nights later in Amsterdam, but it wasn't the same.

I sat about six feet from Eric Johnson at the The Bottom Line in NYC in the summer of 1990, and pretty much stopped playing guitar for a few years afterwards.  He was the only musician I've ever seen where it seemed at though the hand of God had reached down and touched him on the forehead.

I was also baked like a haddock, but we won't get into that.

I don't think it was the drugs - he really does play as though the hand of god were reaching down and playing his guitar.

At least, he did.  Man, that follow-up to Ah Via Musicom really sucked.

I saw Fugazi...lessee, must have been 1992 or so, at a small club in Lancaster, PA.  Great freakin' show.  I also saw them at the amphitheatre at the Washington Monument (free show)! 1995-ish.

Agreed.  However, he did a new album not too long ago which was new material, but recorded live - not bad.

Saw Fugazi sometime in 1990 at Pearl St. in Northampton, MA.  They was rockin' and shit.

Saw Wilco twice in Dekalb last week. Sloan on Saturday. Upcoming: Wilco in Chicago, Two Cow Garage if I am not at a wedding in Kansas, and yes, The Pixies.
