Hey kids,
I'm going offline for a week starting Monday. I'm taking a much needed vacation from computers. No, I'm not actually going anywhere, just sending in my laptop for service and after ten minutes of using the old computer have decided that it's time for a break.
I've been online every day for the past two years, for several hours a day at least, so it seems like time to kick back, do some writing, catch up on reading, go out into the world and DO things, visit the art museum, etc.
I'm a little nervous about not responding to e-mail for a week, but I'll put up a notice on my web site.
I have someone looking after the server, and hopefully the mods here can be trusted not to trash the place.
NO PARTIES WHILE I'M AWAY
-
Well. I'm all partied out anyway. One party a quarter is about the most I can muster, and that's already been.
Anyway, odd that it comes as I have been considering doing the same. I wouldn't be able to without being elsewhere however. So I am trying to find somewhere I wouldn't mind being without a computer...
Rambling...
Anyway, have a good week Cap'n. May it be fruitful and more than a little relaxing!
*puts on gestapo hat and picks up truncheon*

Enjoy yourself, Jough.
If you don't read this until after the vacation, well, hope you enjoyed yourself.
-
It is Thursday night and I've just come home from a beach-wine-candy-firecrackers-adventure. I believe that I, as well, am all partied out. Enjoy yourself, Jough.
-
Have a good week, cuz.
-
I will be "leaving" Sunday night.
And I'll be spending as much time as possible out of the house - it's like a vacation in my own city - I may even do tourist-y stuff.
-
VACATION SENDOFF FOR NUMERO UNO SATURDAY NIGHT 11 P.M.
BRING YO' GUNS 'N' MALT LIQUOR
THIS SHIT GON' GET WILD
-
Ha, Saturday night at 11 I'm gonna be rocking out with Patti Smith, Paul Westerberg and Sonic Youth. However, Jough, have a kickass internet vacation.
-
Shit dude, Sat. at 11, I'll be gearing up to watch the Olsen twins - rowr - on SNL. I'll find out if they're actually worth that "rowr" then.
Shit, they're still jailbait for another like six months. Maybe I shouldn't post this.
edit: Whoops!
-
A vacation from being online. This sounds to me as appealing as a vacation from air or water. Maybe I have a problem? I do also get out into the world, honestly, although it's true that none of it is real until I send someone email about it.
I hope we can expect a full report.
-
Bozack and Choopernickel get equal shouts of dismay from me.

Me too.
-
You think you have problems? I used to participate in Star Trek trivia contests to win more hours online. I played every single game Hecklers Online could come up with to try and win free hours. I was a Random Gamer dammit! You can't out-problem a Random Gamer.
-
My computer has been having random problems all day, and the thought of a week without the Internet saddened me deeply. Nonetheless, I hope all is fab for our Fearless Leader.
-
Saturday @ 11 pm I'll be at work. Hell, I'm off-line for long stretches all the time. I kind of like it.
-
Basically if I don't start doing something with my life that I find fulfilling I will start scoping out bridges from which to jump (based on criteria such as height, impact medium, the view on the way down, etc.).
This vacation into the real world is just Phase I.
-
the view on the way down, etc.).
If you ever played Vampire, you'd so be a Toreador. Unless you went for a Nos instead.
I always went for Malkavian when I had to play it.
I digress. I know the feeling though. I am similarly at a point where I seriously have to start getting some stuff done. The other day I was contemplating posting that I was going to take a week off from the forum. I figure it's as big a step towards not being online, and thus getting shit done, as anything else.
But I don't know that it's time yet, since I can't really get anything done right now.
So anyway, at some point, I'll either work it out so I don't have to disappear, or I will disappear for a week or so too.
I'm rooting for the former.
But yes, in light of that, it is definitely worth doing Jough!
-
I can see Jough posting that he was taking time off, as he runs the show and all. If other people are planning on taking time off, I think it's better to just bail and come back. If you leave for long enough (and you are cool enough) people will begin to ask where you are (Zartan).
Also, it was sort of fun to come back to a place that I was present at the inception of, and note that some people had nearly 2000 posts. Crazy!
The tense might be fucked in that last paragraph, but I don't care enough to work it out.
-

I can sympathize, believe me. However, doing something fulfilling with your life is not necessarily incompatible with spending lots of time on line.
Right? Right?
-
I just hope your vacation is as sticky as this topic.
-
It'd be stickier if I could get rid of this damn box o' CDs I have ready to mail you here.
How's about that PM address already, before I go offline for a week and have to continue to trip over the damn box.
If I don't hear from you by Sunday I'm donating them to ORPHANS.
Damn, it's never been this hard to give away free CDs before...
-
No! Not the orphans! Anything but the orphans!
-
Man, I thought I sent that address.
On it's way.
-
On its way.
Ditto. I don't know how much of this stuff you'll dig, but it's the best I can do for you. I'm sure you can find some rock & roll CDs a home if you don't like them.
-
Okay, I am getting ready for being offline for a week.
The last of my files are backing up, I have someone checking on the server, this place oughta take care of itself (I hardly do any moderatin' any more anyway), my other sites should be fine unattended for a week...
I feel like I'm packing to go somewhere. One thing I've noticed, limiting my online time over the past two days to ease into things, is just how much free time I'll have without:
Reading message board posts
Sorting through e-mail and getting rid of spam.
Reading e-mail
Replying to e-mail
Checking the server stats
Checking the advertising stats (i.e. how much money I'm making broken down by hour).
Checking my bank account(s)
Searching for mp3s
Downloading and installing software
Sorting through and filing away programmes and files
Burning CDs
Coding something new for one of my web sites
Promoting one of my sites
Writing a new article, essay, page, etc., for one of my sites
Reading movie reviews
Reading the news
I'll miss SOME of the above, I'm sure.
But I'll get my news the old fashioned way - from watching "The Daily Show" and listening to Leno's monologue.
-
But I'll get my news the old fashioned way - from . . . listening to Leno's monologue.
I weep.
-
Okay, as of this post I'm unplugging and won't be back for a week.
If you MUST reach me you can SMS my cell phone:
http://jough.com/text/
But be gentle.
-
If I were a little less of a nice guy, I'd make a huge schedule over the next week so that Jough would get a text message every hour. You KNOW he won't be able to turn off his cell phone as well as unplug from the computer, ya just know it!
Well, Jough, when you return and read this, if you did get messages every hour on the hour, it wasn't me, swear.
-
Suuuuuuure.
This is Jough you're talking about, when has it mattered if he has the right subject for a beat down. You may have just labeled yourself the 'warm up act'.
Not that I won't find it amusing.
I'm innocent I tell ya! Ya got the wrong man!
-
Listen, to get back on topic (vacations, etc.): I'm off all weekend for a road trip. I'll be out from tonight all the way through Monday evenin'. Just don't burn down the lounge.
-
Unlocking and resurrecting the thread to announce:
I'm gone from Friday (25 June) through Friday (2 Jul) on -sigh- another trip to Mexico.
It's good to be married to someone in travel. Since we hope it won't be that long until we're cooking for a living, we're cashing in chips and calling in favors while nobody else offline knows.
A friend of a friend has agreed to let us use his house (!) on Isla Mujeres, which is a small island off Cancún. Two-lobster dinner for USD$15 (MP$150), five beers for USD$5 (MP$50)... and we get a kitchen while we're there! We're stoked.
I'll miss you all while I'm gone.
-
I'll miss you while I'm gone.
V-Adore, andalucia, please accept my apologies for half-againning your modload for several days. I'll make it up to you somehow.
Signing off for a week, your humble moderator, and friend,
-=Choop=-

No worries, man. I
enjoy wielding my massive power over an Internet message board chunk can take up the slack.
Happy vacation!

The hell? Unlocking so we have a central locus for people to post when they depart.
Anyway, I and the missus are having a great time on Isla Mujeres, paying $5 for an hour of internet on 2 computers. The beer here is cold and cheap, and the food is awesome (when I'm not ruining it with too much picante muy caliente). I had to come in and say hey when I saw how cheap net access was! Hope y'all are having fun in the states, at work, in traffic, &c., while I and the missus deal with none of that.
Laters!
Choop
P.S. - these international keyboards are hard to type on!

Okay, back and mostly recuperated from Mexico. Here begins the trip report:
7 hours travel time there; we arrive at what has been very highly touted as a great house, but what appears to be two concrete cubes stacked on each other with a staircase cut out. The bed feels like more concrete, and the shower doesn't get hot. Oh! And no paper in the toilet. Of any kind. I'm fully aware of how un-guy-like I sound when I say this, but, Ew.
Rented a scooter for $30/day, drank and tanned and drank and ate and drank and drank and ate and drank and drank and ate some more. That was before we started drinking. Seriously, a sixer of Sol cost $5.25-ish, and that was before the refund on the bottles. The best guacamole I've ever had, and for cheeeeap.
The only snafu we had was when warming up some leftovers to save cash on dinner - we popped some enchiladas in the microwave and some bread in the toaster oven; we were just about ready to eat when *BOOM* the power died. Thank Pete the a/c was on a different circuit; we would have melted.
It was like 120 degrees in the sun at 3 p.m. there; about 90 in the shade in the evening. At least we didn't burn too bad. We saw the ruins at Hacienda Mundaca, a whole estate built by a "pirate" (actually a slave trader), who must have installed mosquito farms. I think I left there with 30 new bites. Coconut water is tasty, but no good for scaring away bugs or soothing one's skin after they come.
It turns out my 3 years of Spanish *cough* years ago isn't all lost -- I had entire conversations with people who spoke with such an accent I only understood about every fourth word. "Hable menos rapidamente, por favor" was my favorite sentence. Then on the boat when we left we met an Italian couple which just screwed me out of Spanish until we left the airport (our honeymoon was in Italy, and I almost figured out how to talk to people).
First-class airline tickets are nice, except under two conditions:
[list=1]- You're in the bulkhead and have no carry-on space
- The people in the next row are trying to "drink [their] twenty-five dollars' worth."[/list:o]
Guess what happened on our way home.
As I said in that post above, it's good to be married to someone in travel. As the missus said repeatedly on our trip, "it's good to live on the periphery of the rich."
Missed you all, glad to be back, &c, and now here ends the trip report.
