I agree with AC there.
Like the dude was speculating in the interview I posted above, by the end of the year there may well be a web cam.
Apple price points are a form of usury.
I don't know if it's still the case, but for a while, when you priced out a macbook on the apple store web site, if you chose the black macbook instead of the white macbook, it was an extra $100. An extra $100 for the same computer with the same options, but in a different color. WTF is that?! It was pretty funny, because they had the price of this particular feature obfuscated by bundling it with other features as an "upgrade package," yet at the same time, you could independently select all the features (except the black color) of the upgrade package independently and you wound up with the exact same computer in white instead of black, for $100 less.
So is Apple withholding features on this thing? Absolutely. Is that innovation? It kind of seems like the anti-thesis to innovation.
Personally I'll wait for Google to come out with a tablet.
also, I thought that interview was pretty funny. These dudes discussing this ipad thing as if it were something, of great import. I mean, there isn't more important stuff going on in the world to talk about?
Sadly, the ipad is like... kind of a big deal, in terms of innovation. It's sad that there's only one company on the face of the earth that can innovate. WTF is up with that? I mean, Apple brought us the damn GUI for christ sakes. Since 1984 we been using Apple technology. Even if you use Windows, you're using Apple technology.
Yeah okay it was Xerox technology, but that's exactly the point I'm making here. Xerox couldn't hack it. Xerox had all this innovation handed to them on a silver platter, and Xerox execs had no idea what to do with it. There only ONE company that's ever done much in the way of innovation when it comes to the consumer experience of personal computers, and that's Apple. WTF.

they allow you a certain number of freebies before they actually send you a ticket for failure to pay tolls.
yeah if you ever have to go anywhere at certain times of day, the traffic is a problem. Chicago's transportation infrastructure has some problems. Chicago has problems in general. it's kind of a ghetto. I'll be moving soon anyway. to the pacific NW
so um, I got a question. I keep having less and less cans. how am I supposed to know how much people like me if I don't get more and more cans each day?
i mean, do people on here really not like me? I mean what's up with that. i think people should tell me they don't like me or my posts instead of giving me less cans.
this can system is retarded. you don't know which posts the cans are for, so it's retarded. you should fix that.

I am intrigued by its possibilities, but there is a warning gremlin in my head screaming "MESOTHELIOMA!"
I agree I would for sure put on a dust mask and a condom before I spray it on. And of course I mean on my penith.

History / Re: Howard Zinn is Dead
« on: February 05, 2010, 07:08:45 pm »
so lately, I've been forcing myself to stop browsing "news"paper sites, reading about stuff that doesn't really matter (e.g. toyota recalling vehicles) and I've been trying to instead browse collections of more substantial stories about stuff that might teach me something (e.g. NPR's online archive of interviews.) And hell for that matter, maybe I should read about Howard Zinn. The least I could do is read his wikipedia page.
Of course, with all the useless information I'm bombarded with, it feels like I have less and less room for any more information in my mind, much less information that makes me *think* and so, I have sort of a natural reaction to *not* reach for the Howard Zinn auto-biography, and instead to reach for the bong of mediocrity, stuff some more useless information into it, pack it in, light it up, and take some deep puffs, holding it in, and then letting it out, and observing the meaningless wisps of smoke as they evaporate into nothingness. My mind screams out for nothing, for nothingness, for peace. I have a nothingness problem, similar to a drinking problem, and maybe if I drink some more, it will go away... maybe...
That interview of that scientist dude was interesting, the one I posted in that thread titled "analysis paralysis." The guy mentioned an experiment that had been done whereby people were given a number to memorize - some people a two digit number, and some a seven digit number. So after they memorize the number, they send them into a room and offer them the choice of a treat between a healthy fruit salad or an unhealthy ice cream or whatever it was.. some kind junk food kinda treat. So, the people who had memorized the two digit number were way more likely to choose the fruit salad, whereas, those who had memorized the seven digit number were more likely to choose the unhealthy treat.
The guy opined that we can conclude from this that the logical part of the brain gets overwhelmed pretty easily. Apparently, the logical facilities of the mind are not capable of nearly as much as we give them credit for, and much of our behavior which we rationalize as... rational... in fact is due to the emotional parts of the brain participating in the decision making process...
Perhaps where some of us go wrong is in trying to become more logical, in trying to shut out the emotional parts of the cognitive process... Perhaps we might do better to try to better integrate the emotional elephant of the brain, even to learn to trust it more, not less...
Anyway, I hope that the next time I post in this topic, it can be about Howard Zinn, esteemed by the person with no vowels, which makes me feel kinda sad that I don't know about the guy, but I guess, I don't need to, on some subconscious limbic level, need to anticipate chowing down on a b-b--b-b-banaaaana split while watching the guy's acceptance speech at the Grammys in order to integrate his thinking into my own.

I'd give up what I have in the U.S. to be poor and homeless in Norway. They have some kick-ass health care over there.

If this and/or that then
something
else
something else
end if
behold - this is the system that powers your voice mail, keeps your bank account secure, keeps your plane from crashing into another plane on the runway, and so on. All these things get powered by one thing - logic.
either you take it seriously, or you don't.
I may be an asshole, but sometimes I'm the only friend you've got.
When you trace the root cause of every fatality inducing defect recall, (and many more that are never recalled), you find an anal asshole who didn't get listened to.

librivox... pretty cool... sucky interface however... I just e-mailed them about it, Pat style...
I won't bore you with everything I suggested to them, but for instance, the end of my e-mail:
It's certainly not nice of me, but I look at it this way... It's dangerous as fuck to encourage people to promulgate systems that suck. Sucky computer systems as well as sucky procedures in general lead to situations where for example the school nurse starts giving insulin shots by accident instead of swine flu shots. (This actually happened in some school somewhere this flu season.) It leads to situations where Choop's books get lost... It also leads to shit like this...
http://www.ntsb.gov/Events/2000/incursion/incur_video.htm
(scroll down to United 1448 runway incursion animation) real player required - you will not believe it... listen to all the audio.. it's crazy as hell. incomplete versions that are missing the part when then tower operator totally freaks out can also be found on you tube if you search for united 1448.
Choop: That sucks about your books. If I were you I would start lobbying the people who run the library, the people on the board of directors or whatever, to get over their lost books that they say you own them. I'd consider handing out free book marks to people at their annual book sale... assuming I had time to kill... I'd do all this not out of a selgiraffe psychopathy, but because, hey, anytime you can put pressure on systems that suck to suck less, you never know if you might have a positive effect in the way people think and act.
Some people fight racism. I fight evil administrative systems and computer systems.

It also totally sucks that your results include this footer:
1 ·2 ·3 ·4 ·...·54 ·55 ·56 ·57 ·58 ·...·64 ·65 ·66 ·67
what if I want to go directly to number 53 in the list? Or number 30? If
I do, I'm left muttering to myself about how much your computer program
sucks. Computer programs only suck when people make them suck. Please
stop making your computer program suck.
Best Regards,

This belongs in "Science," but since so many people on this board are diseased in the head (first and foremost yours truly) I am thinking that if this topic provokes any discussion, it will really be so couloured with personal nuance and anecdote that it may as well be here in "People"
in other news, that thread where we were talking about a book club... I realized that that's just stupid. You can get just about any books at a public library, right? So we should encourage each other to go to the library... we should write up an essay on a book if we think it's good, and if our essay convinces people why to read the book, then they will read the book.
my library card is around here someplace...

you got to go west on 88 until the last suburb and there I am so it is kind of a pain in the ass if you are in Chicago to come out here
