I actually thought yesterday's was hilarious but today's was too much for me. Maybe tomorrow I'll like it?

Often the t-shirts and gear seem to highlight the misfire strips.  The bunny ambulance just doesn't do it for me.

SO true.

I actually didn't mind this strip, because it made me imagine Teodor coming up with other retarded "impressions" before finally resorting to shouting out obvious physical features.
In general I have despised this storyline, even the books off-shoot with Cornelius. It's making me worry that Achewood is going to go down an unfunny path of no return. That ... that would be Sad.

Molly is going to say no. Then what!

Sorry. I'm just ... having trouble enjoying this arc 'cause everybody in the strip seems to think Molly's acceptance is a done deal and the only problem is getting Beef to pop the Q.

I know it is just a comic strip, but I was actually angry at the other characters, thinking "for fuck sake!  Get him to a hospital!  This is serious!"  Is there a word for comically horrific?

Wait. Where do you get the impression that they aren't going to take Ray to a hospital? I mean, sure, everybody is stoned so they're not on their game, but they seem to be acting about as responsibly as one could expect (Teodor asking questions to check Ray's awareness, etc). More importantly, Beef has emerged from his plexiglass chamber to face the stoners, so he's acknowledging in his superior state of sobriety that There Is A Problem. I'd be surprised if the next strip didn't take place in the hospital or on the way. Either way, I trust Onstad to do something funny which will ultimately bring the strip back to its status quo.

Bleeding from the ears isn't THAT uncommon with head trauma and doesn’t really suggest permanent brain damage (the continued spurts are unrealistic and clearly just for comic effect). Could just be a broken nose and a concussion. If this arc strives for realism, he'll probably lose some memories of the event but ultimately be okay. I had a (human) friend in a similar situation due to a soccer ball, which I'll admit isn't as hard as a softball, but still.

EDIT: Actually, don't people usually get hit in the back of the head to get the bleeding-of-the-ears thing? I'm definitely not an expert on this. But I doubt Onstad is, either.

I am a lady and cannot remember a time in my life when I was not thrilled about the prospect of breakfast foods at other times in the day.

Nowadays it's because I get up so early and don't have time to make delicious, elaborate breakfasts; I generally just grab a yogurt and go. Thus,  bacon, eggs, oatmeal, pancakes, and waffles are more nighttime foods for me. Or Sunday-sleping-in-afternoon foods. But that's the only day I have time for them.

Breakfast foods are excellent.

EDIT: Oh, and danishes, and donuts, and cinnamon rolls - all things which I have consumed at lunch or dinner. Dannng, I love breakfast foods. Every single American breakfast food I can think of is a delicious, delicious item.

Achewood / How popular is Achewood, really?
« on: April 10, 2007, 03:15:42 am »
I have not started a new topic thread since my introductory thread. I'm only starting this because it has been bugging me for a while. Man I am really coming out of my shell here.

So it says in the Salon article that Achewood gets 10 million page views a month. First of all, I'm too stupid to know whether or not that's a lot. Could anybody help me understand what those stats mean?

But anyway, that's not really my point. I'm wondering if I just have terrible luck. I can count all the Achewood fans I know in real life on one hand, and two of them are people who I introduced to the strip. I own two Achewood shirts and I wear them plenty 'round the great city of Boston, and never once has a person stopped me to say, "Hey, Achewood! I love that strip." And one of the shirts that I own is the one that merely says "Achewood." So ... you really couldn't expect a person to miss that. (The other one is the “ass in your #####” shirt, which I’ll admit is more obscure.)
My boyfriend got stopped once wearing his "Dude and Catastrophe" shirt, but that's just one time and therefore seems more like dumb luck than burgeoning popularity.

Am I living in an alternate universe where Achewood is an unpopular comic? It's apparently popular enough for Scott Kurtz to begrudge its success (and they tell me you haven’t made it on the internets until Scott Kurtz begrudges your success). Maybe I need to wear my “Achewood” shirt for a week straight, just to up the probability that I will find fellow fans.

To be perfectly frank, the only reason why I bought the shirt with the word “Achewood” on it was so that I could find other people who liked Achewood. And … well, I guess I’m just disappointed that it didn’t work.

Why is Pat being so agreeable? Maybe next strip he'll start being anal and try to take over.

Edit: Also, I like the picture of Whimsington.

me too. I am trying a thing lately where... sometimes I type up a big ol' reply, and then I read over it. And then I delete it. Because 90% of the time, my responses are "oh man, that reminds me of (something that isn't really related)"

I do that constantly. That's why I end up lurking so much and yet posting so little.

"I'm not going to act like I completely understand it. I get it on enough of a level to enjoy it."

I don't think it takes patience to read Achewood, or even that much intelligence to "get" it. I don't understand why they think it's so abstract, random, and difficult.
It's true that sometimes Achewood doesn't have a punchline. It's more like real life where funny things happen and also tragic things happen.
But there's nothing random or Dadaist about it. And even if somebody doesn't like it and doesn't find it funny, I've never had somebody tell me that they thought it was going over their head. I've never heard so many times in a row that Achewood "doesn't make sense." Of course it makes sense, within the scope of its world.
[PvP has a troll in it, for no reason whatsoever, plus some other mythological creatures. Does that make sense? In the context of PvP, yeah, it makes sense. It's also way more random than Achewood.]

I didn't even know people like this existed, people who can't even make connections or notice patterns that are extremely evident. Especially repeated themes/storylines. Like the "Ray gets an idea/invents something" storyline, which we're just starting up again.

It's kinda unrelated, but I don't want to start a new thread just to link to this guy who made a Phillipe flow-chart.

Dannnng, cornbread is so good.

I'll probably end up trying Muse_of_Fire's cornbread recipes soonish, because I like kitchen experiments and have been known to make up recipes on the fly as well. I shall post pictures of my success and/or failure.

Seriously...I mean, who didn't watch Doug?

Me ... ::hides::

Oh, and seriously, thanks for the tiny cans. I mean, I didn't even draw a quail with a tufty thing. So ... yeah! Woo!

14
Yo Mattgiraffe. I see that you did a California quail instead of the Ohio bobwhite that I did. I totally should have done a Cali one, because, you know, settings. But I didn't realize there were different types according to state until after I'd drawn the Ohio one. And I confess I was way too lazy to do it again. You win though, because you are smart! And capable of Drawing Stuff!
Anyway, can'd.

As loathe as I am to request Achewood fanart, I very much want to see Quail Jesus.

If only Onstad was still taking commissions...

I'm not Onstad. Heck, I'm not even particularly good at art. But this was too fun to not attempt.

Apologies for poor quality b/c my scanner's broken, so I had to take a picture of the drawing w/a camera.

I based the quail's little hand motion on the pseudo-peace sign that Jesus does. See, looky:
