So basically, white guys are doing the crappiest jobs? This sounds like a good approach to me.

So the women and immigrants at the meeting were not exactly volunteering to run instead of you?

Maybe they throw in extra because they know not all of them usually make it? Really, it's kind of surprising any of them do, via the post office.

But why will people pay more for the pretty pig at auction? Like I know there are kinds of livestock that people breed fancy for show. But these are just for eating, yes?

Why do you care about conformation on pigs? Is the bacon less delicious if his toes aren't perfect?

Wait how did it get dramatic if there were four candidates for four positions?

OK, more than sad. What the fuck is the matter with people who call someone who has lost their dog and lie about seeing it? That is just plain evil.

Oh yeah. So sad.

I feel we need to clarify the definition of the word "fun".

Did she get a new name?

It's entirely bizarre. I'm waiting to see if they really contact me about working freelance and whether I can get more of the story from the editorial side. Because seriously, I have never had a job interview process in my life where they talked so much like this was a done deal, and if they just changed their minds, fine, it happens, but why not just a polite form rejection email like normal?

The more I think about the "can't" the more mysterious it seems. On the one hand, Major Newspaper Company acquired Major Website fairly recently so maybe they don't have prior experience with remote hires. On the other hand, Major Newspaper has a DC bureau and it's hard to believe some of those people don't live in the Maryland suburbs.

Whatever it is, it's something they really should have figured out BEFORE the editorial side decided to put me through the interview process and really before they posted the ad. Because if you're correct, I assume there really is a difference of opinion here - editorial wants to hire me and HR doesn't want to deal with the hoops. If they just decided they didn't want to hire me, they would not have to make up such a bizarre story.

It has something to do with their tax status in different states and maybe other things, she started to use the word "liability" but I don't know the details because I cut her off, not being interested in their excuses. I have seen other remote jobs advertising that they could only hire people living in certain states, so it's a thing. What's not a thing is not realizing that you have this problem BEFORE you try to hire people. And I am not mentioning any names (yet) (I don't want to make them mad, because I may still work for them on a freelance basis) but this is NOT some fly by night company, I can 100% guarantee everyone knows their name.

OMG. So this is the news she was trying to avoid delivering...  This extremely major media company went through the entire process of interviewing and deciding who they wanted to offer this remote position to, BEFORE checking whether they could legally hire someone who lives in Maryland. Which they can't.

They still want me to freelance for them, which is great, except now I'm back to being on tenterhooks to see what happens with the health care bill and whether I will just have to expect to die of not having health insurance when the Tech Staff retires soon.
