OK, I haven't read anything more than 5 word headlines on my.yahoo and snarky comments on Fark about the bird flu threat.  So enlighten me.

Why do we think a flu pandemic is more likely this year than any other year?

I think, mainly because we haven't had a serious flu epidemic since about 1969 and they tended to come about every 20 years before that. Also because this particular H5N1 Bird flu has recently shown more signs of crossing into the human population and there is suspicion that there has been human-to-human transmission.

And, of course, there is no vaccine.

I think some people are brewing up a 'perfect storm' scenario.
