I had no idea there was such a thing before this moment, but now I want to know why the world does not have a lot more of them in a lot more places.

A lot of areas have trained volunteer groups that run local convention security and follow a theme - I know there's a troupe of security Stormtroopers (Star Wars style) and some areas with strong SCA ties to sci-fi fandom have security Vikings.

And Doc, yeah, look for some Larry Niven. He's not everyone's thing but he's very respected.

Get Ringworld and The Ringworld Engineers.  Great books and justifiably part of the SF canon.  Most of the rest of Niven doesn't do much for me.

I've kinda read almost everything he ever wrote, but those two certainly do stand head and shoulders above the rest.

His collaborations with Jerry Pournelle (as Asherdan mentioned) are some of the best books in my library:

The Mote in God's Eye - It amazes me how long it took me to get around to reading this book, but now I push it on everyone. A fantastic, fully-realized novel of first contact. The sequel, "The Gripping Hand", is not nearly as good, mostly because the first one already had a lock on being so f-f-f-frickin' awesome.

Footfall - rompy alien invasion goodness with a bunch of scifi survivalists saving the world.

Lucifer's Hammer - The best End Of The World book, ever.
