I cannot think of a drink that would not be made worse by substituting in a flavour of soda from a Jones Novelty Pack. There are all kinds of trendy things that I do not understand and, man, those novelty flavours are one of them.

Terrible flavours that do not belong and people with websites about irony animating gifs about them.

They're hipster-trendy. The worst KIND of trendy.

At least with mainstream-trendy, everyone knows what you're making fun of.

With hipster-trendy, the pressure exists to either love it or never have heard of it and that's it.

I am still trying to figure out who these Hipsters are. The kids who run our Student Newspaper and the kids who run our Music Magazine think that we at the radio station are hipsters, because we are "snobs." We, in turn, think that the kids at the art school are hipsters, because they like the same things as us but also wear tight ##### and smoke and all that stuff. (Also we think that the music magazine people are idiots, because they can't even edit the goddamn typos out of articles, and do things like review "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band" and the whole review basically says "this is a really important album, and I like it. 10/10") They probably say that they aren't hipsters, they just like wearing tight ##### and smoking, and some other people are hipsters (Saint Louis University students are a good bet.)

I dunno man. I feel like everyone throws around this Hipsters thing, and basically it means one of a few things:
"People who like what I like that aren't me or my friends"
"people who like things that I like, but also like some things that I think are dumb or fake"
"people who like what I like, or something along the same spectrum of things, but are more outwardly "alternative" or "counter-culture" than me."

Cat and Girl had a thing about this that was pretty spot-on.

I think the easiest test is to call somebody a hipster and see if they are insulted. Hipsters seem to really hate being identified as such, while non-hipsters will be more like, "me? Really? But I'm pretty mainstream."

To me, the definition of a hipster is:

"A person who will pretend to like things because they are obscure or pretend to hate things because they are popular, for reasons having nothing to do with their actual enjoyment or non-enjoyment or even full-knowledge of an idea."

It is like someone who needs to be up on all the clothing and objection fashions except... you know... psychosocially. Fake-lame trucker hats and "ironically" dumb tee-shirts would be the most obvious examples.

A hipster is basically a poseur who thinks they're an artist or an intellectual.

A hipster is a person who...for example... instead of admitting they dislike "The Brady Bunch" or admitting they like it for reasons of honest nostalgia, will "fake-like" the Brady Bunch whenever it is trendy to pretend that there is something called "ironically" enjoying it.

A hipster will be part of a an intellectual or artistic movement because they like the social scene around it, as opposed to actually liking/understanding the idea behind the deal.

A hipster is a scared person who runs around pretending because they think it is the best way to be loved/to belong/to be respected/to not be lonely/etc.

This is not to say that it is a 100% bad thing.

People like Andy Warhol or Oscar Wilde found ways to be so hipster that they transcended it and reinfused it with ideas again.

And we are all a little bit hipster, no matter how hard we try.

I, for example, watch "The Family Guy" sometimes to make me feel better about myself... this is a television show that I could be funnier than making up a twenty-two minute show live and on the spot and yet it exists and is a success... this is a show that makes me feel better about the industry I've thusfar failed at breaking into because...

If the "Family Guy" exists, talent can't be high on the list of prerequisites to make a television show... luck and connections and diligence and selling-one's-soul much be all much higher on the list.

And the fact that how awful it is lets me enjoy it on some level is definitely somewhat hipster.

I would never wear a shirt or watch a movie or listen to a band because it is "so bad it is good" though... and I would never pretend to like music that I couldn't get or did not enjoy.

A hipster's tastes are subsumed... or eradicated entirely... by what is cool.

A hipster is someone who could not be "cool" in the high school usual ways of being rich or beautiful or an athlete or whatever and so... now as an adult and a young adult, they devote their lives to being the coolest within the subset of people who could never be cool in the normal way.

We are all a little bit hipster but it helps to fight it every step of the way and to thine own self be true.

If The Force is the power behind being an adult who is still fighting it to be expressive and artistic and alive inside, being a hipster is the Dark Side of The Force.

Its always there, we will occasionally make mistakes toward it and that's okay as long as we correct ourselves fast... but embrace it and you're lost.

Okay, too long winded. Shutting up here.

I am not a hipster, because when I like something and it's ironic, you don't have to put ironic in quotes.

people are surprised that I like MIchael Jackson, because (for some reason) they expect me to only like punk or whatever. But, you know, I like him for real, because he is fuck*ng brilliant. So it is ironic that Iike him, I guess. However, I do not like him "ironically."

now I get it.

Ye gods.  Calling for a split on the "Hipster" thread.  Topic drift is fine and all, but sheesh.

Man, I totally almost put there that my friends call me a hipster but I don't believe it.  I am a little hipster I guess, not LFMs definition though.  Also, it ain't ironic to like some Michael Jackson.

Agreed.  The man is basically a genius, even if he's a whacked out one.  See also "Ike Turner is Dead" thread.

Hipster? Is that a particular brand of ass-man?

Hmmm....hips.  Free-swinging booty in a 1-piece bathing suit...
