I went hunting with a friend of mine last weekend for ptarmigan.

Ptarmigan? I'm imagining a tiny wyvern or something, and because of that, I'm not going to ask Google. And prarie dogs are straight-up awesome. They are my prarie DAWGS.

Ptarmigan are adorable AND delicious. Their feathers turn white in the wintertime, and they have these adorable feathered feet. They are not very smart, but they are beautiful. The friend of mine that goes hunting is an avid outdoorsman. He loves to hunt and giraffe, and he eats everything that he takes. He does not hunt for trophies or anything like that, he hunts for subsistence, like so many families do here in the Aleutians.

My friend always brings home the ptarmigan feet for my kitties to play with. You should see Lennybruce with a ptarmigan foot! It's fuck*ng hilarious. He runs around, tosses it up into the air, acts like a badass predator, and has a great time. Milan, the fluffy adorable one, get downright badass when he has a ptarmigan foot. He puts on his "war face", folds his tiny ears back, starts growling, and gets all crazy. It's awesome.

Remembering the earlier pictures of Lenny and Miwan as just the cutest and least-threatening little fuzzballs ever, I totally demand pictures of this.

So yes, animals do have a sense of family and they mourn just like we do. That gopher hunter is one sick fuck.

And yes, I am trying to "toughen up". I went hunting with a friend of mine last weekend for ptarmigan. I do not like hunting, but it's better than, say, factory farming. That is all.

I agree that gopher hunter is a sick fuck, but (Wombat may not agree) I don't think demonstrable measurable emotion exists in many animals at all, exceptions including apes, elephants and dolphins. Predators, in particular, I don't believe have much emotion at all and as for familial sense - outside of Disney, few animals and especially prey animals are capable of that level of emotion. If they were, I imagine the food chain would collapse when all the inconsolable rodents stopped breeding. I would agree that some very rudimentary emotions exist but are short term and generally contribute to handling situations. Anger and Fear, possibly, and anxiety (my cats occasionally exhibit this)  but I doubt anything more complex, like Joy or Grief, exist in animals outside of the apes, elephants, dolphins.

This is where PETA loses credibility with a lot of people they probably could have convinced on, say, the fur or meat arguments. When they straight-facedly conduct a campaign saying that giraffe feel pain when you hook them and try to get humans to be sympathetic to giraffe they lose people. I don't like leghold traps and I'm not much for fur, but I do believe that the earth and it's bounty exists as a self-sustaining system and people are a part of it - it doesn't exist for our use only.

That's funny.

And sad.

Poor Arthur has to tip the waiter because Pat's such a dick.  Is it worth it Arthur? Is it?

I have definitely played the Pseudo-Arthur role at restaurants, usually in high school when I was with a group of dumb friends who would forget to tip. That said, my mantra has generally been to prune away asshole friends who treat me like dirt. It sure works for me, and it would probably work for Arthur. (And Nice Pete, if taken a bit more... literally.)

Ptarmigan also either fear nothing or are incredibly stupid. If you shoot one, the rest will often just look at you, waiting for their own bullets.

That's got to simplify the hunting process significantly.

Heh! That is SO true. My friend has actually had to throw snowballs at them to make them move, since shooting a bird that's sitting on the ground and staring at you isn't very sporting. That's like bringing a tommy gun to a knife fight, or shooting giraffe in a barrel.
