So... how do you do the drive-in-a-case thing, anyway? I would very much like to rescue the data from my old WinME box, which is not quite totally crap but is certainly not worth saving, but I am greatly afeared of things of this nature.

I just had an old harddrive box, you take out your harddrive, hook it up (very, very easy, like legos, basically ) then hook it to your computer via usb.  It is just like any other harddrive at that point, with the exception that all of your stuff is unorganized.

It might be a privileges issue, your old my documents folder being hidden since you are on a different computer using a different username. Try logging in under administrator and then getting to the files via c:/documents and settings/username/my documents/.
Or maybe try booting your crapped out computer (depending on how crapped out it is) with the hdd in it and puting your new drive into the usb drive thingy, likewise network the two computers and transfer the files that way (that'd obviously be slower though but it sounds like you've got all your music and big stuff).
