Make an appointment with a doctor for vertigo.

Last week, suddenly whenever I lie on my back and turn my head to the left (how I commonly sleep) the world spins for a few moments, and I'm left feeling sick.   The happens again when I stand up.

Suddenly I'm very nervous about my ongoing sense of balance.

Sounds like an inner ear infection Smick.  You'll need to see a doctor to get diagnosed for sure though.  I had one once and the vertigo was terrible.  Felt like the whole world had gone wonky - I remember the floor flyind up at me when I looked down, which reminded me of that scene in Fear and Loathing at Circus Circus.

When I had an inner ear infection, which was primarily severe vertigo and some nausea, I was told by the doctor that it would typically clear up on it's own over 3 weeks or so.  I wasn't able to wait 3 weeks so he also perscribed some meds that he warned me might not work at all and may cause nausea.  I didn't end up taking the meds because I found a better way of dealing with the situation.

At the time of my ear infection I was working with children and several coworkers had inner ear infections too.  One of them shared some exercises with me from the Mayo Clinic website that had cleared up her vertigo within a week of diagnosis of the inner ear infection and starting treatment.  The version she shared was a print out, and I can't find the exact exercises anywhere on line now, but they're similar to the these brandt-daroff exercises explained here, however there was a component where I held a massage bug over my ear while doing these exercises (they mayo clinic suggested using a piece of equipment that vibrated and strapped to the head, and since I didn't have that, I improvised) and the some instructions encouraged using a heating pad on each ear as well for 5-10 three times a day. For me, my vertigo cleared up within a week.  I was never sure if I just happened to heal or if the exercises really helped, but considering how bad the vertigo was and how simple the exercises were, it was well worth it to try.

If it is an ear infection, my mother-in-law swears by a few drops of olive oil, warmed slightly, in the ear canal. Then lie on your side so the oil drips all the way in for 5 - 10 minutes. She used this on all 5 of her kids. I've never tried it; we always got the ear goo from the doctor instead.

My mom says that a little cotton in the ear keeps it warm and helps relieve pain, though you don't seem to have pain so that probably won't help much.

Almost exactly a year ago I had this same thing happen.  It was annoying at first, then scary.  My brother had the same thing happen a few years back and the doctor explained to him that there are little crystals in your inner ear that occasionally come loose and drift around brushing the cilia in your semi-circular canals that allow you to sense orientation.  The false signals from the displaced crystals are confusing and cause the vertigo.  My brother is a physical therapist and happened to have in his circle of acquaintances someone who knew how to manipulate his head to get the crystals to go somewhere away from the balance organs.  I made an appointment with an ENT to see if that could be done for me as well, but the symptoms cleared up before the appointment arrived (two weeks?).

The BPPV thing Sideshow linked too is super common and if you don't have a fever or pain that's probably it. If you have ringing in your ears it might be Meniere's  disease.

BPPV normally goes away by itself but you can make it go away quicker by repeating certain actions, normally sitting up quickly and turning your head (again in SS's link), unfortunately these are the actions that also cause vertigo so most people don't like to do it. Think of it as recalibrating your vertigo sense to normal stimuli.

In doing some reading, and of course being an INTERNET M.D., I'm kind of agreeing with BPPV.

So I got some kinda crystal ear rocks boinging around off of my balance nerves.

In further reading I discovered that the guy the Epley maneuver was named after is a doctor here in Portland.   Further: He was considered a quack for years on his treatment for this issue.

From: http://www.healthboards.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-458997.html
Quote
Hughes used plastic tubing to build a model of the inner ear. To simulate loose particles, he put BBs in the coiled tubes. He and Epley flipped and turned the hand-size model as they might a kid's puzzle, to work out a sequence of moves to reposition the tiny metal balls.

That made me chuckle.

yeah.

as recently as today I was thinking "for all the tiny issues we have been having I cannot think of how anyone could be better than *******." Now I can think of a few things. Mostly involving, you know, communicating about problems and trying to solve them.

Sorry to hear about that, man.  Over the phone, too.  At least it wasn't a text message.
