Making Coco and Oakie even more disgruntled with me: they both had a systemic reaction to the vaccinations. Weird, because usually it sets in by 48 hours, so I kept a close check on them and relaxed when they showed no problems. Then at 96 hours they both had their right front legs swell like damn sausages from the shoulder to the knee. Fortunately, they started improving after 48 hours and the swelling is almost all out by now, but that was worrisome.

It's hard to ice down a hoss, but I'd go out a couple times a day and run cool water down their shoulders to help with the discomfort. I also used the last of my bute (hoss ibuprofen) on them.

Next year I'll give them a tetanus booster, wait a week and then give them the west Nile vaccine. Splitting them up should help avoid this again.

Took the hosss out for a 2 hour ride on Easter, that was a good one all the way around. Coco didn't like letting a hoss pass her going in the opposite direction and turned and jumped up a 3 foot ledge onto some grass smooth as a bell, with Spouse on her back. I guess it didn't faze Spouse because the other rider and hoss passed and she hopped Coco straight back down off the ledge.

All I said to her was "Good seat there." I guess she didn't think about it, she just rode the hoss as she went all hunter/jumper on her. Which is a good thing, not overthinking the issue.

ALSO: went to put the band on Shep the Sheep's bozack to neuter him yesterday. Checked him a couple minutes after installation (after he'd quit hopping around) and found I'd gotten on nut above and one nut below the band. WOOPS, BIG WOOPS.

Grabbed him and stretched him out and very carefully used some side-snips to cut the band. I'll try again in a couple of days.

On Saturday's ride we were crossing a driveway and Oakie slipped and went down. I stayed centered and rode him down and at first he landed on his belly, upright. I tried to get him to stay there while I kicked off but he decided to get up and slipped some more, this time going down and rolling to his side. I got my legs out of the stirrups before he rolled onto me, so I was able to put my right foot on the saddle and as soon as he rolled a little and unpinned my left leg I pushed my shit clear and we both got up.

I led him up and down the trail a little and he seemed OK, so I got back on and rode him home, where he still seems fine.

Getting Oakie cleaned up after the ride, Rocky came over and wanted to play. He gets a little bigger and I'll ride his ass around the yard, for sure.

Poor Shep. I checked and he can be shown at the next fair as a market lamb, so we went about preparing him. Friday we disbudded him (google disbudding tool for a horror show), gave him his CD & T shot and put a band around his nuts.

The spray is Aluma-seal, it keeps things clean while they heal.

The poor guy is showing his sheep like instincts, he comes out to eat and then, because he doesn't feel well, he curls up and hides. Hopefully he'll perk back up after a couple of more days on the mend. Oh yeah, we also took his bottle away and he is weaned onto all solid food.

The little guy's week has suuuuuucked.

Oh, and we picked up Agent Number 02, the new show goat for next fair. He is a meaty little bastard that should make weight and show really well.

Neo, the black faced Boer, is getting listed for private sale this week. Someone's gonna want him for fooding.

In text conversation with a possible buyer for Neo the goat I got to use a line I always wanted to. When the guy was dickering price I responded to his first offer with "for that price i'll eat him myself."

Turns out it horrified the guy. When we agreed on price and he came to pick up, Spouse asked what he wanted the goat for. They had a just weaned bottle baby goat who was alone and really noisy sad from being lonely, being out with the chickens wasnt enough.

So Neo hit the jackpot, he gets to be a friend, not food.

Shep's stomach bloated last night so I got him rubbed out and put some oil and baking soda mix down him three different times, got his stomach to reduce by about half and put him in the pen to keep safe for the night. He swelled up again this morning and died before the vet opened.

Well shit.

We gave that little abandoned baby our best shot.
