A lot of people with great taste in music (This Group) are losing a lot of cred by hating on a lot of great music.

Just because you've heard them on the radio 129,412 times (this week), and you can't possibly squeeze any pleasure out of hearing any longer, doesn't diminish the fact that Pink Floyd kicks nine kinds of ass.  If you don't like them because they are the most popular band ever, or you are embarrased by their inter-band squabling, well that's just silly now.  Cos that has nothing to do with the music.

Even if you can't get into Rush, and I'll admit they ain't everybody's cup of tea, you have to at least admire their prowess as musicians.  C'mon Slink, you know Geddy Lee is a bad ass.

'79 is when Mr. *****o came out, August, everybody stopped taking Styx seriously after that.  And it's hard to defend Styx (or Journey, or Foreigner) because they aren't nearly as good as they are popular, but they put out a few pretty good tunes in their day.  Their just not that bad.

The Mars Volta is the current band that the critics loves to hate.  They've been tagged with a "prog" label.  A label that doesn't really fit them, but that is where they've been pigenholed.  I don't know how prog came to be a derogutory term anyway.  there's lots of kick ass prog rock to be heard.

These are just opinions, we all have 'em.  Although personally I'd rather hear about music you love than hate.

Think fast, which would you rather hear Foreigner's Hot Blooded or Lee Greenwood's God Bless the USA?

Now if you'll excuse me i'll return to listening to T-Rex.

Preach it, brother!

Re: Mr. *****o -- That's it exactly.  And I will admit to still liking "Blue Morning, Blue Day."  But I've always hated Journey.  Even in '77.  You can't convince me on that one.  They are teh sux.

That would be a wash for me, to be honest with you, but at least Hot Blooded doesn't get trotted out on a yearly basis to a specific shedule. What would a patriotic laser show or choreographed pyrotechnics be without Lee's contribution to the landscape of American sentimental music? That would be like the early 90's without "Achy Breaky Heart", and bighaired women in blue jeans and red high-heeled pumps.

You damned kids today with your bling-bling music and all the rock stuff, it's a bunch of crap!  I remember back when we lived in the holler, we didn't have electrical instruments as such, we had to make do with a washboard and an old tack piano what we rescued from the fire!  There weren't no "I Can't Get No Satisfaction" back then, we played good music like "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."  Then we munched on some sassafras roots and went to bed at 6 in the pm because we had to get up early to whap the mule.

AND WE LIKED IT!  LIKED IT!  YES WE DID!

Sorry. Can't agree.
Pink Floyd, as Andalucia said, in their Gates of Dawn days, were good.
After that however, they just fell to Waters' pretension. He wasn't even a good writer! If you look at any Floyd material it's excessively boring, while trying desperately to be prog. C, G, E, Em, C, Am. What the fuck?
Now I'm not saying simple can't be good. Look at Nirvana say, or Jane's Addiction. But for prog it doesn't cut it.
King Crimson were essentially a bunch of extremely good musicians, with interest and history in Jazz. This allowed them far more freedom in what they were doing.
I fail to actually think of anything Floyd did that was interesting, post Barret. I have tried to like them, and I have tried to see genius in them.

T-Rex, I'll concede, they had their moments. They were never a classic, but they had their moments.

The Mars Volta, I see as prog, in some ways, because they are doing the same kind of thing as Crimson. They are shucking all idea of convention. They do what they want, when they want. They'll throw a song round halfway through, and then do what they want with it. That's all there is to make them prog, but there's nothing much more to define prog. It's just people doing what they want with music really. Any band who break down into 5 minutes of wailing sound and echoey feedback during a jazz riff laden song that hasn't followed the conventions of verse/chorus/verse, what else are you going to call them!?

But man, it just pissed me off that Floyd are considered some sort of musical visionaries when they did fuck all.

Anyway, don't mind me, I'm allowed to be excessively opinionated in here, 'cause I say so!
