Hey kids,
It's all set up, using the same software as Wikipedia.
Have at it. (http://achewood.saddestthing.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page)
-
The blank page is kind of daunting. Someone else go first.
-
Hey Jough,
Is there any way we can set it up to have Wikipedia-like URL's, such as
http://achewood.saddestthing.com/wiki/Achewater
instead of
http://achewood.saddestthing.com/wiki/index.php?title=Achewater&rcid=2
to make it a little easier?
EDIT: Never mind, I'm a idiot. I first got to the Achewater page via the recent changes link, and that did it.
-
I was messing around with mod_rewrite earlier to try to get rid of the "index.php" in the URL, but I kept getting 500 errors and I'm not sure why. I couldn't seem to make the PHP rewriting and mod_rewrite work together, so I left the server-side rewriting alone and just let MediaWiki handle the URL string.
But yeah, the long URI is annoying, but as long as you can create new pages and edit things it shouldn't be a problem.
The forums are going to be relocating to:
http://achewood.saddestthing.com/forums/ too, making the URI slightly longer.

Done! It looks like Jough and I are taking turns tonight creating several pages that should serve as good jumping-off points. When you decide to hop in, make sure you visit the Main Page's discussion page. It appears Jough has been agreeable to my suggestion to make that the place to discuss questions of style in the Achewiki.

Also, if someone has more experience with Wikipedia than I do (like, almost everyone fits this category) could someone please start something on the Help page there about how to do things like make links, bold and italicize things, indent, make horizontal rules, headings, etc.
I'm sure there are more subtle things, and I know the little buttons at the top of the edit windows shed some light on how to do that stuff, but it would be nice to have a Wiki editing reference in one concise page.

I will try to make that an ongoing project of mine over the next couple days.
-
something tells me I should consult a guide of some sort before trying to screw with this any further. I think I got rid of everything I accidentally added on other people's stuff. All that remains is my un-logged-in addendum to Click *****. Sorry.
Oh my god I am so sorry
-
There is no way you can mess up the Wiki, dude.
It keeps pretty much every revision ever made - we can go back to any version of the page and restore it. We control the horizontal. We control the vertical, etc.
-
I just added on the part about the readership of Achewood. Please edit to your hearts content.
-
Oh boy I edited something. I corrected a typo in the little nephew section.

-
Thanks, Jough, this is fun!

Where?
-
To anyone who wants to play along, but is worried about screwing something up and breaking it:
Go to the main page. I have created a link there to a Sandbox, a test page where you can play around and learn how to use the site before jumping in to a live page. And like Jough said, even if you do make a mistake and can't figure out how to fix it, fear not. Someone will come along and revert to a previous edit in due time.

Well it was on the main page, but it appears that it is now gone. I guess I suck too much. When I look at the recent updates section, I'm not even listed there, so maybe I'm just techno-tarded, but when I made the update, I checked back later in the day and it was there, so I dunno.... Techno-tard strikes again!

Oh, that was you? Um... sorry about that. The update about the readership was a little bit snarky, and we'd already had a visit from a vandal on the Main Page earlier in the day. I saw the edit was from someone who was just an IP, and I thought it was another vandal. You did it right. I just thought it was graffiti and reverted it. By all means, try it again.
It also helps, kids, to create an account instead of just letting your edits get credited to your IP address. IP edits are looked at a little more carefully to make sure they're not vandals, and if you're just some anonymous person out there, sometimes your humor can come across as something different.
-
The update about the readership was a little bit snarky...
Was it? I just meant for it to be silly. There's a weird mix on wiki in general - some entry's are generally goofy, others totally serious, so in the spirt of Achewood I thought....
Anyhoo, I reposted it again, this time with slightly altered wording, and having logged on.

I made an edit on Lyle's description. At the very end, it said he lived with Phillipe, Teador, Lyle, Mr. Bear, and Chris. I took his name out of that list.

I thought he did, but you'd have to ask an Expert, I guess.
-
I always thought Lyle was Cornelius' illegitamate son.

I always thought Lyle was Cornelius' illegitamate son.
Last week, on "The Young And The Alive Stuffed Animals," Cornelius Bear made a shocking revelation...
-
"Lyle lives with Phillipe, Teodor, Lyle, Mr. Bear, and Chris."
Good correction.
-
It's not like we all don't have to live with ourselves, you know.
-
What's wrong with the Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achewood)?
(Besides the fact that more people need to be watching it for errors, like changing all occurrences of "cat" to "dog".)

There's nothing wrong with the Wikipedia article as far as I can tell, other than a few errors which will probably be corrected soon.
Why do you ask? Is this like "Where's Waldo?" where you want us to try to spot the errors in the article?

Well for one, they're cats not dogs.
and for two... dude... I mean... dude...
-

Yeah. Good thing I was watching it and fixed that, then, right?

I'm just wondering what the Achewood wiki will have in it that wouldn't go in the article. But I guess there are some things...
Nevermind.
-
Ay yi yi.
-
The Achewiki goes into hella more detail than would be needed on the Wikipedia entry for Achewood. The names of all the AIBO's needn't be expanded upon on Wikipedia.
Then again, there are those that didn't think it needed to be in the Achewiki, either...
-
There are a lot of specialty wikis for stuff like this. This Might Be a Wiki (http://www.tmbw.net/wiki/index.php/Main_Page) for example.
-
Yeah, I tried to make a page about Dr. Kisses at the Wikipedia but someone marked it for deletion a few hours later.
Bastards.
Anyway, if you're curious about the types of things that are in the Achewiki, you can go there (see my sig) and see for yourself.

Not sure if this belongs here. I don't think it was set up that long ago but it's already quite extensively furnished. I'm sure that with Achewood's new fanbase there will be an entry for every champion by tomorrow.
-
I don't know if that great outdoor fight site is really needed, since the Achewiki covers the fight pretty extensively already.

GUH
ITS FAN FICTION
People I have no problem with ficiton that invites interaction with the user, but Onstad has been pretty clear in delineating that he feeds us pap and we take it quietly.

Was the GOF Wiki created by this community, or another? Me and some folks I know from a Different Place have been writing/editing articles, and I'm not sure if we're stepping on someone else's "turf" or what-have-you, and we'd rather not get into some retarded Revert War.
-
I don't know who started the GOF wiki, but I don't think they post here. The Achewiki was started by folks here, and maintained by some regulars.

Do you follow the original Wikipedia rule about not using any original research? because if you ignore it, I'd like to include my belief that Chris has in several ways based roast beef on himself. For instance, Beef being the only character to be shown quitting smoking, something which Chris made a big deal out of, and also the computer programming, and also some other things mentioned in passing in both alt-text, the paid archive, and wherever else it might be seen. There is plenty of evidence that this is at least to some extent the case.

The general consensus is that most of the core characters are autobiographical. T's food obsession and Pat's temper regarding the mundane are the two that come immediately to mind.
-
What's it take to get super powers on this thing (banning?) I've been hell of cleaning up the place.
Thanks.
-
Hello everyone. From under a tree in Washington Square Park, I have removed all spam (visible and invisible) from all pages and discussion pages.
-
Good work! Have a can.
-
Keep it up and we'll make you an admin up in that piece. The spam was really getting out of control. There was talk of making people register to edit, but I don't know.
What say you all?

Resistering could work. Apparently there's also an update to MediaWiki that helps reduce spam.
-
Wiki News:
A-CAP is now an admin. So be nice to him. ;)
The MediaWiki software has been at long last updated to the latest version. It was not a trivial upgrade, and it made me very grumpy to reset all of those symbolic links and re-upload things several times. Anyway, it's all better, now.
There are hell of extensions to this thing so let me know (either here or there) if we'd like any of them. I think the spam blacklist is rolled into the new version, and there may be other settings that Golfhaus and A-CAP (among others) can experiment with.
Good stuff. Let me know if you discover any problems or have any requests.

You know, Jough - you are a gentleman and a scholar (my sainted mother used to always say that). I, for one, really appreciate all your work around here. I haven't looked too much at the Wiki, but this mother works hella smooth, and I figure it's all because of you.
-
Aww shucks, it ain't no thing.
I've been pretty much away from the board for awhile. It's hard to find time these days.

I heard that.
-
ATTN: the wiki has been crashed
-
So, does anyone know if it will ever come back?
-
Someone who cares should probably email Jough.
-
Someone who cares should probably email Jough.
Did anybody email him? I don't want to flood him with the nine millionth "the wiki's down" email. Oh well, I'll send a PM.
-
No one ever emailed me.
I fixed the wiki, if by "fixed" you mean "TRUNCATE objectcache";
Hopefully nothing important was in there.
Also, the wiki is hell of possessed by spam. It is pretty much useless now.
But whoever cares, enjoy!
-
No one ever emailed me.
I sent you a PM about the wiki.
I cleaned up the wiki before and I guess Ill do it again.
-
Rock on. Yeah, I wasn't getting emails when someone PMed me, but I fixed that now.
Oh, I should make sure it's going to a real email address, though. I now send all my domain email into the /dev/null void and let Teh Google deal with my mountain of spam.
If there's anything that I can do to make the Wiki less spamorific without having to do any actual work, by all means let me know.
-
And there is currently a problem with memory allocation on the Wiki as well - I cannot access most pages.
So, is this wiki going to be worked on and spruced up any time soon? Because I am hell of raring to write about some Achewood.
In lieu of a working Achewiki, I may just create a new one and start submitting things.
But if this wiki is going to be revived, I don't want to create a competitor Wiki and fudge yours up in that way.
-
the current wiki has basically AIDS and no one has been able to cure it.
-
Why do we have a wiki anyway? Doesn't Wikipedia already have an Achewood wiki? How about y'all wiki lovers go beef up (pun intended) that page? It's got all of the basic information, but it could go a lot further.
-
OK, so I google "Cartilage Head" (don't ask), and I got our own Achewiki, and here's what's on the page (http://achewood.saddestthing.com/wiki/index.php/Cartilage_Head):
erotiek movie sex woman xnxx zoofi broadway theaters sexy adult video clip picture skelaxin amature xxx video state farm insurance charlottesville va free lg vx 6000 ringtones adobe premiere pro 1.5 cracks mapa de camuy
With links to the kind of crap you'd expect.
So it's basically become a big spam repository. How about we shut it down?
-
Oh man. That is the saddest thing.
-
Wouldn't be up to Jough to shut it down, if he so desires?
-
Wouldn't be up to Jough to shut it down, if he so desires?
Well sure... but nobody wants it, it's broken beyond repair and it's redundant to begin with. So hey Jough, why don't you just get rid of the wiki?
-

Or you can all just ignore it and then Jough won't have to do anything at all.
-
By ignoring it, we are enabling the purveyors of erotiek movie sex, and also State Farm Insurance. Wipe that shit out.
-
Maybe it's Jough that's doing it!
-

Yeah, so? If we're ignoring it, we don't have to see the spam. The spammers are happy too. Win/win/win.
-

In order for me to win, the spammers cannot be happy.
-
UmSpammer Lammy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Um_Jammer_Lammy): Music didn't work out, so Lammy had to get a job as a spammer. Press the buttons rhythmically in response to the icons on the screen as Lammy types soul-crushing spam keywords into the data entry fields.
-
I remember when I tried really hard to fix that wiki. The spam bomb it was then is the spam bomb it is now.
-
Oh yeah the wiki I should probably just delete that shit.
-
An Achewood wiki is a great idea in theory, but it requires a nonzero number of people who could be fucked to actually write and maintain the thing, and that simply does not exist
-
That is a thing that existed back in 2005, when this thread (and the wiki) began...back when we had more than three or four new strips a year.
So, yeah.
-
Oh wow, I just took a look. So sad, "The Achewood readership is generally made up of those who like the funny, as well as sticklers, malcontents, foodies, and those who oppose the use of the term 'foodies.'" I remember writing that part. Now it is mostly a place to go for false links to cheap Cialis and Jessica Simpson nude photos apparently.
-
I like how all the main character pages are hosed, except for Cornelius and Téodor.
-
That's 'cos those pages were created with Cony's Shropshire.
-
I just figured all those links were just you guys trading boner pill connections on the down low. The discussion and source pages also include Propecia and joint pain relief links, so it all made sense.
