Title: AugustWest, I object to "reacting poorly"
Post by: yu-huang on January 14, 2006, 02:17:09 am
(feel free to delete, etc)

Let's talk about drama.

Feel free to correct on me the following points (I'll resort to memory, 'cos it's just too weary to go through all the threads to get the excerpts):

I have seen the term "drama" being used here to describe the essence of the recent problems with the newbies. To be fair, no names were given as fair as I remember, but still, I am a newbie, and the more willing I am to go all tabula rasa and start all over and over with some of the members of TOUAMB, I can't give you a point which costed some effort.

When I posted about wanting to see the joint-rolling machine strip, and then posted again about just having seen it, Jough came and told me in rather rash terms that I shouldn't have done that, and why. Now, he doesn't really have to be corteous, maybe he just doesn't like me, whatever. I was in the wrong - it was postwhoring. So even though I felt I had been unnecessarily mistreated by Jough's tone, I didn't say a thing, and promptly deleted a lot of my own irrelevant posts in that thread. I could have made a fuss, like apparently some of the other newbies are doing (I don't know, haven't been following), but I know when I should shut up. This costs a bit of self-control, and I will not have my purposeful consideration of what it's best for the board (my obeying the rules of the guy who pays for the thing, namely) even at times of personal distress ignored and distorted. I'm a bore, I know, but at least I'm being honest (gotta say that the fact that you're still letting me speak is rather cool, though =P. So... I hope that things improve, and so on and such...

When I started a topic about a strip, without commentary, AlohaDawg did the same thing that Jough had done - pointed to faults in my procedures, in a really bitchy way. This time I retorted (I should have remembered that he was a mod and just let it go, but... anyway, we made amends quite agreeably. I am trying to watch my steps, that's all I'm saying.

Dude, you and I hashed out or problems the other day but let me give you some advice.

Stop posting in the Achewood thread about non-achewood shit for one.

Two, when someone locks a thread, there's a reason for it.  If you would let it die, be cool, and hang out then none of this shit would be necessary.

So, in conclusion, you're not really getting the vibe of this place, dig?

I know when I should shut up.

No, apparently you don't. This did not need another thread. LET IT DIE.

Have you been treated unfairly?  Maybe.  Probably.  I don't know.

I do know that I'm not going to invest the time to go back and re-read a message board drama that didn't really interest me much the first time around.

Here's what I'm suggesting:

Everybody back the fuck off for a while.

Let's cut Yu a little slack.

Yu, try to grow a little bit thicker skin.

If we can make it work, it'd be great to have you as a member of the community.  If not, maybe you need to move along.

I don't intend to devote any more attention to this "controversy".  It's boring and unnecessarily contentious.  I'm not sure what you intend to acheive by prolonging this.  Vindication?  Attenion whoring?

Have you been treated with less than perfect justice?  Probably, but you aren't doing anything to make anyone want to treat you better.  Consider it an initiation if you will.

If you want to continue here, let it go and move on.

Look, rule of thumb? If you don't feel welcome on an internet site, you might just not be. If you feel welcome, you might just be.

Well, being unwelcome never stopped you from hanging out here, Choop.

Yeah, I guess You Wang isn't really welcome.  I think he's kind of a dick.  But I will give him the benefit of the doubt starting... NOW.

yu-huang,

I somehow missed all of the other drama posts, so I did go back and read them.

Honestly, honestly, what you need to know is this:  some of us have been posting on one form or other of this message board for years now.  We've been around for a while.  And I'll relate to you a story that is indirectly related to the whole issue, and will help you understand our frustrations:

I used to manage an art gallery.  It was a very small gallery, so an employee and I basically stood near the door for hours greeting people, answering the same questions over and over, and basically being bored.  In the gallery, if one wanted to exit the gallery, one had to push on the door handles (swinging the door outward), not pull.  For whatever reason, perhaps the look/design of the handles made people think they had to pull instead of push to exit, and it's easy to just ignore the small "Push" sign above each handle - the human brain tends to edit out what looks like unimportant information.  The first few times that I saw gallery patrons tugging uselessly on the doors that required a simple push to exit, I was excepting of it - it's a human foible:  If you want to exit a place, and your brain tells you the way to go is by pulling on a door handle, then there's a brief moment of confusion when this simple action doesn't yield the proper results.  Right?

So, time passes - we'll skip the boring in between part - and it's two years later, and I'm still standing by the doors, and every day I see gallery patrons pull on the push doors.  Each time it's someone new.  It's not as if it's the same person every few hours coming in and pulling on the push doors.  People from all over the world come to the gallery and for many it's their first and only visit.  But you know what?  After two years of watching person after person pull on the push doors, I had a small bubbling rage, and so did most of my employees.  Why the hell couldn't people read the damn sign above the door that clearly says push?  Why the hell can't they realize that if they swung the door outward when they entered, that the door again needs to swing outward from them to ext?  Why do some people tug repeatedly and aggressively without even bothering to try pushing?  There were days where I was just so pissed off at the push door situation, that I thought that if I saw one more person tug on them that I would just go off on them, clobber them over the head and run out of the gallery screaming.  Seriously.  Why?  Because I'd seen the same damn mistake happen over and over again, hundreds of times.

And that my friend is what is happening here with the newbies.  We have had so many newbies come and make the exact same mistakes over and over and over again, that it's really hard to keep perspective and remember that they haven' heard us answering the same damn questions over and over and over.  We think, "why the hell don't these people just read a few threads before they make their first post!"  The complaint in an earlier locked thread, was that the board rules were previously unposted... and well, the thing is, a lot of the required etiquette of the board can be easily gleaned by simple observation of the status quo.  If you look at the hundreds of posts under the Achewood category, you can see exactly how each strip - related thread is labelled and hence how to name your subject heading:  list the date, month and year, a tag line related to the strip in some way.  Simple.  But nearly every newbie makes the same mistake of not bothering to notice.  Fools rush in.  Each time it's a different person making the same mistake, but this is the internet - it's just a faceless void of text when you're making that first post - we don't get any sense of who the newbie is, but the same damn mistakes glare out from these posts like red hot pokers.  And it's especially grating when we have problems, because in most cases this board is like a little utopia - lots of fun, lots of laughs, maybe even actual, genuine friendships.

Newbies all get lumped into a category of "most likely to fuck up," simply so that we can preserve our little word of goodness.  It may not be right, but it's the way it is.  It's sort of like white people in gated-comunity suburbs - it's nice, its safe, and we really only want to let you in if you already know better than to let your dog shit on our front lawn.  It's exclusionary, it's rude, it may even be close-minded, but that's how we maintain a happy message board in a world of shitty ones.  It's gotta be a tight ship.

Yu-huang, I've done nothing but enjoy having you here - I missed the things that were edited out, so I don't really know what the kerfuffle was all about.  I thought it spoke volumes that you showed up at the chat party - I get that you want to be here.

This was disturbingly rational and level headed. Moreover, the anecdote was apropos and even entertaining. You've raised the bar for this message board and it's your fault when the dick and fart jokes seem lacklustre now. Just so you know. Also you get a can of Dr. Pepper.

Yeah, can I go back and change my vote for Board MVP?

Also, up until this point we've had an open-door policy - anyone over 13 can join this board freely and if they behave themselves are mostly welcomed in.  I mean, I don't think we've ever chided someone for having an unpopular opinion (well, we may chide them, but not to the point of bannation), but only for presenting that opinion in an obnoxious or disruptive way.

In other words, if this were a house party, we wouldn't object to the loud-mouth schnook who keeps shouting "Freebird!" at the band as much as we would to the quiet guy who takes a shit on the living room carpet.

Yu-Huang came to the party and got diarrhea all over the magazine caddy.  I was going to fuck*ng read those, man!  But then he said "oh, I didn't know I wasn't supposed to unload my #3 on the magazine thing" so I guess what, all's forgiven?

But other people were willing to clean it up and he promised not to do it again, so, you know, welcome to the party.

Anyway, Smells gave me a good idea when she mentioned the white people gated community.  I've been thinking about this for a while now, after the n00b invasion of 2006, and it may benefit the community to have a moderation process for new board members, where they can only post in a sandbox and tell them about themselves before we let them in.

That's possible with the SMF system, so it may behoove us to try it out a little.

Using the term "behoove" in a sentence gets you a tiny can.

I don't know about actually coralling the newbies into a little area is a good idea, I mean, have you ever heard of the term "reflexive biting?"

Is there any way that we can force people who sign up to actually read a set of rules and "how to post" section before they're allowed to post?  Like send a message to their email in box that they have to read and respond to of something?  Or an enforced lurking period, where someone has to have clearly read X number of posts before they can actually post?  That might work.

Can we shoot at them in the corral?

Anyway I suggest we let the cans be our guide.  Maybe a silencing feature when you hit a certain negative number.  (You can still PM but not post, etc)  And on the other side you can't take away cans until you hit a certain positive number. (That way it prevents overactive abuse of said system).

Just thinkin' out loud here people.

The system already tracks how much time one has wasted here. What say we allow memberships freely, but prevent newbs from posting until their info shows they've wasted 3+ hours reading?

Should some newb not waste 3+ hours before posting, it'll be obvious by the content of the post, and we can judge by that.

Personally, I don't find the level of bad newbieness all that obnoxious. I think it means something that we tend to have such strong memories of and reactions to Bad Newbies -- because for every bad newbie we have, we have one really good newbie, and three or four newbies who don't become board MVPs but contribute and are enjoyable. Barring truly unusual instances (like Onstad showing up and a flood of lurkers coming out of the woodwork to call us History's Worst Criminals), we've never had a flood of bad newbies, and most of the "bad" newbies have actually just been people who didn't fit in and eventually drifted away. I'm not sure that this problem is worth any kind of actual limitation system. That said, if we have to go with one, a time-loitering-based system might work.

V, maybe you missed last week's noobie flood because I was deleting/banning them as fast as they signed up, but in about two hours we got around 50 new "members" signing up and posting crap, ads for smut, etc.

So the gated community idea started looking pretty good after that bit of annoyance.

In my defense it was on a dare from AD, but the platform shoes I won were totally worth showing off my backdoor to the entire room.

Wasn't really worth having to hear Freebird though.

Uh... damn. I must not have been online for that, but damn. I had been under the impression that that crap was way down since the board changeover, but I guess I was wrong. Still, unless it becomes a pernicious problem, I'm not sure we need to code anything against it.

Out of curiosity, does Simple Machine have any coded-in options that could be useful here? That's something to consider and would save El Guapo work.

I'm certainly not in favor of spammers, but I do like the bad newbies.  Or at least most of them

Dammit, they're entertaining!  Sure they can obnoxious, but it just gives us the opportunity to rip on them and that can be great fun.

Yeah, actually, I do enjoy the bad newbies too.  I really like tearing into them when it's needed.  I do like Choop's suggestion of the 3 hr's of board lurk time = permission to post though.  Is this possible?  You know an enforced three hour lurk period, with a friendly auto PM letting the person know that the lurk time is specifically so that they can learn the etiquette of the board?  That would be cool.  Of course knowing nothing about the technicality of these things, we may be purposing something that involves a lot of work... so I dunno.

Because your name begins with the same letter. Same with the fact that until last week I didn't realize Aloha Dawg and August West were different people. I just thought of them as "the ornery guy  whose handle begins with A."

Miles and MisterQ are definitely in danger of being "The guys whose name start with M who hang out in the chat room."  To avoid this, I think both of you need to tell us about yourselves, in vivid and preferably disreputable detail, so that we can more clearly distinguish you as characters.  See, I could never confuse August West (lawyer from Kentucky who was on Jeopardy) and AlohaDawg (Our Man in Public Health who lives in Hawaii).  Now, if you were fictional, I'd go back and change your names so they didn't start with the same letter.  But since it's too late for that, you need to give yourselves some unforgettable distinguishing characteristics.

Say, did this happen perhaps in the same reality where Charlize Theron finally figures out the sensitive, caring person you really are deep, deep down, and gets excited about the messageboard you run to the point of spontaneous blowjobs?

For what I remember, Jough, you were being antagonistic, and a cock, to the point where someone at the Achey-chat even mentioned giving me a tiny can of Dr Pepper just for how well I was handling all the hazing. This to say: people were noticing, you see, as the events were unfolding. People might not always speak, but they do see what happens. The only small adjustment I would make to that person's remark would be changing "hazing" for "pointyheaded fuckwit bullying", since "hazing" bespeaks for some sort of worthy outcome in the end of the probational process which I cannot for the soul of me discern here. Whatever. The thread was closed (something I was cool with, since I had decided to let the whole thing die) and someone opened it again, which I think means you guys feel like talking, and stuff? So here it is. Jough? Remember that fine piece of civilized interaction when you said that Onstad had "left some on my face"? Guess what, I didn't even had to build a message board for him...

Bullying? Verbal online bullying from people thousands of miles away?

If you can't take that kind of 'bullying' (which it isn't) then take your punkass somewhere else, maybe somewhere where you are wanted. Try an AOL chatroom, like maybe "neglected housewives". That should be right up your alley. Unless your more of a M2M Teddy Bears kind of guy. But you can find that there too.

Ha ha, I guess we found a compromise, then? You keep your farted-up (I don't even know if that's a word, but whatever) slandering nonsense like "yu-huang was a cock to strangers first"* to your private forum and I will have no reason to complain anymore. Really, this is me trying hard to shut up right now.

Okay dejavroom, for a second I'm going to look at your unhappiness seriously, and respond thusly:

The problem is that you are not understanding some very simple nuances of this message board, and in a totally honest and unsarcastic manner I am going to try an explain this to you.  (seriously here pal, I am not secretly giggling while I type this, and I know how hard it is to discern the difference between sarcasm and earnest tones, joking and mocking, etc.  -so I stress that I am not mocking you or making fun right now).

Never mind that jough runs this board.  Never mind that he spends hours of his free time making sure that when you click a thread that something is actually there for you to read.  Never mind that he has been consistently and intelligently adding to discussion on this board since the moment of it's insemination.  What you need to understand is that jough is intentionally a shit disturber, one who insights situations that will cause responses, that anyone who becomes a regular on this board knows to read all his posts as if they are absolutely dripping with sarcasm and that his high-falutin' ways are fully earned and deserved.   You call jough "antagonistic" like it's a bad thing, but you know what? Everyone else loves jough for being antagonistic.  Infact, if we had a board where everybody was all nicey- nice all the time, I wouldn't want to post on it or read it anywhere near as often.  Jough has directly mocked each of us at one point or another, but you know what?  We don't take it personally, and most of us find it funny and enjoyable, and also enjoy mocking, joking and ribbing everyone else.  That's the way it is on this message board, so basically, if you don't like it, why are you wasting your time and our time?

dejavroom, I have been especially nice to newbies lately, but basically I take it as my personal job to rip into them full force.  Before I do that with you or anyone else, I do want to make sure that you understand that this board is all about the making fun and the having fun, and I think I've now set this out full and clear for you, so either learn to say "thank you sir, may I have another," or go find some Dora the Explorer board where everyone will be your friend.  Seriously dude, full out mockery has been the tone of this board for years now, you shouldn't join a cockrub club if you don't like cockrub warriors.
Title: Re: AugustWest, I object to "reacting poorly"

I take each of your words in good will (I always have, and I'm good at detecting sarcasm, that was what got me in this situation in the first place), and am grateful for your previous inputs on this matter. I know you cannot be expected to write frigging essays on board etiquette everytime there's a problem with a newbie. I'm also gonna be honest: As soon as this thread is locked, I won't be around anymore. I only returned because someone re-opened it - I felt like my input here in this thread was justifiable, since there were people still trying to treat the whole case in a manner which left me in a bad light when I still am pretty sure that... whatever. Not going down that path again. But - as soon as the thread is locked, or forgotten, whatever, that'll be my cue. I'll eventually lurk here, but really that's all I'll be doing. I don't feel the drive to share whatever would be my oh-so-important opinions with you anymore, and frankly, no one is gonna be the worse, right? You had your years to get used to whatever is the Joy of Jough and playing rough. I could get there, eventually, I don't know. I'm sort of a "digital country pumpkin" as your old folks used to say - minus the "digital" bit, of course - and I like foreplay and the intimacy that comes with knowing each other for some time before the rough stuff begins. But it's all over, and again, it's better like this. My initial plans didn't include actually *saying* goodbye because that's one of the easiest things to deride, but here it is. Goodbye (and thanks again for taking your time twice to answer me in a human tone. As Caleb Garth says in "Middlemarch", which I just finished and had me in tears for a good part of the ride: "The love of a woman shapes many a rough fellow".)

vroomie: as i said before, if you don't feel welcome at an internet site, you might just not be. if you feel welcome, you probably are.

That said: you seem welcome by this board (though perhaps not by jough specifically, and auggie by extension), and you probably are. I've been a mod, and even as such have felt less than welcome at times on this board, but i stick around because i just know jough's a dick, and I shouldn't take it personally because he probably can't help it. AlohaDawg, too, has felt less-than-welcome at times (certain arguments best left recalled and not redredged), and has also stuck around.

Stick around. You might find more here that you like than the opposite.

Hey, no hard feelings.

Next time you attempt that colloquialism say country 'bumpkin' not country 'pumpkin'. Pumpkin would be incorrect usage. Just sayin' is all; I come from a long line of Country Bumpkins. Do not confuse this with Country Blumpkins.

Also, no one even knows who you are so worrying somehow about your reputation or your honor online is pretty unreasonable. For the same reason that bullying is impossible. All you really need to do is lighten up, respond in a measured way and move to the next topic.

Hey boys, can you, like, clear something up for me?  Why is it an insult to call a man a dick?  Of all my experiences with boys and men, they have all seem to exist on a gradiated scale from "liking" their dicks, to "really liking" their dicks, to "loving" their dicks.  So why is it an insult to call someone a dick?  I wonder how and why "being a dick" became an insult in the English language.  Don't you boys like your dicks?   I've never seen any sentiment to counter this, though I know Bozack has had some issues with his testicles...  Wouldn't then, the transition from having a dick, to being called entirely "a dick" be a good thing?  Why oh why isn't this so?

Anyway, I had no idea that yu-huang and dejavroom were the same person, so now I feel like a big pu$$y (whose pu$$y?  Gina's pu$$y!).  That said, it seems the dejavroom understands that to not love the jough is to not love the board, so come on folks, let's stop tonguing the sore in our mouths and get on with talking about barbed c*ckes.

Most women I know not only hate being called a cunt but they generally just hate hearing this word. I know my girlfriend hates it if someone says cunt, even in a non mean way. To her it's just a gross word for such a great thing.

I just sort of figured that was because 'pussy' as an insult derived from the cat rather than the Business. This is supported by "pussyfooting", which makes more sense as "treading as lightly as a cat due to fear" than "walking as if your feet were genitalia".
Title: Re: AugustWest, I object to "reacting poorly"

"pussy" as an insult derives, I think, from declaring a man has no masculinity.

For the sake of inclusiveness, maybe  I'll just call people "asshole". It works both ways and I like and appreciate my dick and pussies in general, so where is the insult there?

Ark, with your blessing, I NEED to steal this quote as a sig.  Is SOOOOO good.

man, the last thing you need in life at this VERY MOMENT IN TIME and quite possibly the
near and or distant future is a blessing from ME unless by blessing you mean curse in which
case my guess would be that you would have chosen to have used the word "curse"
rather than "bless" (regardless of tense) and that is clearly, or so i percieve, not the case.

Furthermore,
how is your login name pronounced?  is it pronouncable? is it a word?  is it a noun?
is it PROPER?  what does it, if it is a word, mean?  if it is not a word, what does it mean?

Having actually read this thread, because I LOVE DRAMA AND DO NOT GET CABLE SO I CAN'T WATCH LAW AND ORDER,
i have to say that i object to "reacting poorly".

this one time, i did this thing, and the person reacted poorly.  jail sucks, nuff said?  nuff said.

so, noone should ever react poorly again, they should react richly,
BECAUSE FRANKLY (oooooh, is it a pun? is it? is it? ooooh, FULL CIRCLE) I COULD USE THE MONEY.

so, from now on everyone react richly.

That said, perhaps the solution to a problem i do not understand is to follow my ill-informed advice:
drink more.

lot's more.

My name is Alex.

The three extra initials are essentially meaningless anymore, but they mean that I can get this name on whatever service I want - it's never taken.

It is probably not pronouncable unless you segment it as I do - a-cox-c-a-e.  This is the proper way.

My name is Alex.

My last name is Cox.

I knew this instictively (http://touamb.com/index.php/topic,2440.msg52472.html#msg52472).

see I always read it a-cox-cat, cause basically if my brain doesn't understand, it just makes meaning, and well, we do talk about the cox of cats often here, so it fits.

Change your name!  Change your name!

I always assumed it was a-cox-kay.  Never thought there was an issue.

Now that I hear it from all sides, *I* had no idea there was an issue.  Unfortunately, owing to the right hemisphere of my brain being occupied with moving my left hand and whatnot, I have not ever had the time to come up with a newer, wittier nickname.  Unfortunately, this has hindered me in more ways than one, apparently - your confusion as to the meaning and pronunciation of my current name, and my inability to think of a new domain name after that film-producing ASSCLOWN stole my rightful property.

Also, some other jackass with my name stole alexcox.net, which was my clear second choice.

I guess I'll have to change priorities on this matter, now that I know there's so much public confusion about it.  Good thing I've got time.

While I never considered myself dyslexic, I find that I always want to transpose the c and the x, making axocae (AX-o-kay).

This information is of no use to anyone.

This is an interesting factoid, which I will file away in my brain and recall at such a time when it seems to have importance.

Thank you for this memory.

Did you just use "assclown" in a sentence? I've never heard that in a non-wrestling context.

Andalucia was shocked (shocked!) when she found out that my name is pronouncable.

Actually, I used "assclown" in the Office Space sense, as in, "It was OK, until I was about 10, and that no-talent assclown became famous and started winning Grammys."

I had no idea this word was part of the popular Wrestling Parlance.

edit:  I don't know why I have this urge to put apostrophes in things.  I hate it when people misuse them, and consequently, I hate it EVEN MORE when I do it.  And yet, I still do.

I've heard it used by Howard Stern.

Yeah maybe that's where I heard it.  Somewhere juvinile at any rate.

Oh man, it is IMPORTANT that I stop using this word now - I had no idea what connotations it had picked up.  I apologize to everyone who is confused, I meant it solely in the "Damn, Michael Bolton sucks" sense of the word.  I did not mean to connote wrestling, Howard Stern, or any other such cultural medium which may have chosen to adopt this word without my consent.

Man, that word was one of my offbeat favorites, too - nobody ever expects the assclown.

And as far as I know, it was coined originally in Office Space - that was the first I had heard of it, way back in 1999.

In wrestling Chris Jericho used it all the time. I can't say for sure if he beat Office Space or not. But it's so associated with him that no other wrestler would even think of saying it unless they were actively trying to reference him. Kind of like "pencil necked geek" and "Classy" Freddy Blassie

Pencil Neck geek predates any wrestler come lately.  I know of it being a song on Dr. Demento back in the 70's, but it was a common slang way before that even.

"Classy" Freddy Blassie repeated claimed to have invented the phrase after seeing an actual geek at a carnival with a tiny tiny neck. In fact his autobiography was called Listen, You Pencil Neck Geeks and he recorded the song of which you speak. He started wrestling in '35

You know, I'm really tired of seeing this thread title.

I don't have a problem with the actual thread contents, but the title is making me feel persecuted.

I stand corrected.  Obviously not a wrestler come lately.

On the Office Space special edition DVD they said they used "ass clown" because they were afraid of getting sued for calling Bolton an asshole.  I don't know why ass clown is any less likely to spark litigation, but evidently it was an adlib on the day they shot the scene.

Thanks Jough - I feel....vindicated.

Still, wrestling and Stern have ruined future use of this word for me.  I am inconsolable.

The only reason to be afraid of that is if somehow, Michael Bolton had sued someone previously for referring to him as an asshole.

Which I think would completely fulfill the requirements for someone to actually be Quite the Asshole.

Rewind to comments past: I am fully aware of what the "e" stands for in acoxcae's screenname. I am also fully aware that if I share it here before Saturday, I may be minus an Alex...or a hand.
