Title: TAB(?)
Post by: Thee on January 21, 2006, 08:45:32 am
What the FUCK did I just drink?  Was that DIET CINNAMON soda that I just put in my body?

That shit is staring at me from inside the refriderator, I just know it.  It's like that Poe poem with the..... fuck, body part, under the floor boards?  Eye?  Heart?  Okay I guess it's not so much like that since I can't remember what exactly I'm referencing.

Moral of the story?

Sometimes you shouldn't drink everything you see in the movie "The Zero Effect."

Did any of you bitter old people drink this swill when it was hip and new and jive?

Never had TaB, but I've pondered it.

The two worst carbonated beverages I've ever had:

Beverly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beverly_%28drink%29), which as the Wikipedia article would suggest, I tasted at the Coke museum in Atlanta.

Dr. Brown's Cel-Ray (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cel-Ray), which is as advertised - soda that tastes like celery. Which is to say, tastes like ass. Wikipedia says it kinda tastes like ginger ale. It does not taste like anything but celery ass.

They're making Tab again now?  I also saw a billboard that they are making Fresca again.  People, these things were not that good the first time around.  Maybe they died for a reason.

I blame it on the baby boomers.  Can we just not move on already people?

Here's the creepy part - they NEVER DIED.  I have been able to get TaB and Fresca constantly for very many years now - it's just that every now and then they reintroduce them in an effort to convince people that they don't suck.  In the case of TaB, they're wrong.  But one of the new Frescas (Black Cherry, I think), is actually decent and drinkable, as opposed to the "old" Fresca.

Let's be fair to Cel-Ray Tonic: it says right on the can/bottle that it is soda that tastes like celery. If you do not think this is a good idea and yet you drink it anyway, you have nobody to blame but yourself.

I have had the Black Cherry Fresca and liked it, but I like normal Fresca too. Maybe I'm a freak of nature.

This is getting off the carbonation topic slightly, but on the subject of "weird beverages I did not actually believe existed": while at the liquor store on a dorm booze run, I was amused to discover that, next to the cinnamon schnapps and peppermint schnapps, you can actually buy a pre-mixed cinnamon/peppermint schnapps. I'm sure this product has been around for a while, but can this possibly be a good idea?! It sounds ten kinds of vile.

(I realize these are harsh words from someone who, just yesterday, bought a nine-dollar bottle of dsturbingly red cherry vodka, but work with me here.)

Wow.  It's funny you should mention Zero Effect because I have never seen it and it just showed up in my mailbox from Netflix minutes before I read this thread.  De de de doo de de de doo...

Yeah, they've been making Fresca and Tab for years.  Fresca is like Sprite only with grapefruit instead of lemon and lime.  It's refreshing, and always diet.

Tab is another diet soda where there's no regular Tab and diet Tab, there's just Tab.

Is it still in those cute pink cans?

The "Tanqueray and Tab" was a popular girly drink back in the late 70s.

See, I live in a place where indeed TaB and Fresca have never gone away.  They are the items in store refreshment fridges that are always stocked on the bottom shelf, out of the place where glancing, unseeking eyes might search for them, but they are always there.

The sodas I miss are Tahiti Treat, Crystal Pepsi, and PC Chocolate Soda.

Tahiti Treat used to be a drink labelled as such when I was younger, then it was taken off the market.  Crush came out with some limited edition flavour favorites a few summers ago and one of them was Crush:Tahiti Treat, and it was almost exactly the same as the original, and I was all over it.  But it was a limited time thing, and now it's gone.  I loved Crystal Pepsi.  Loved it.  I imagine I would still like it, but I'm pretty sure that my love of PC Chocolate Soda was a childhood thing, and if they made it again I would totally hate it.  The Chocolate Soda had an illustrated picture of a chocolate bar on the can, and it looked just like cola, to the point where the chocolate taste was always a surprise to me, even though I new it said "Chocolate" on the can.

Sprite had a tropical remix that was really good but they stopped distributing it here in favor of another flavor they call Aruba Jam which isn't as good.

I like it when clear soda makers add interesting flavors.

A very similar drink to Fresca is 50/50. Anyone heard of it? I like it more than Fresca. It's the same lime and grapefruit mix. Very yumm. It came in both cans and bottles.

And since I can't remember how to make linked words here are some pretty pictures.

Yes - and I went in knowing that. I just had to taste the hideousness for myself.

I googled 'wishniak' out of curiousity, and most of the hits linked it directly to some kind of Black Cherry Soda, and many noted that it's kind of a Philly thing (even Philly's wiki pages).  I did find a recipe (http://recipes.epicurean.com/recipe/15339/cherry-wishniak.html), though, and it sounds tasty.  I also found this site (http://wishniak.com/) which gives almost no information.

And there are some good sodas at that store's site (like this one (http://www.sodapopstop.com/products/detail.cfm?link=279)).  I may have to make an order eventually.

Did any of you try the Jones Soda holiday flavors?  Some of the flavors, lke Pumpkin Pie or Cranberry, sound great, but they also have flavors like Turkey and Gravy and Brussels Sprout.  I think a new round of flavors (http://www.jonessoda.com/files_new/turkey05.html) come out every year, but it's the same idea.
Title: Re: TAB(?)

Frank's sodas were a Philly tradition - very popular here.  I actually never much cared for the black cherry when I was a kid (I love it now) but their orange soda was made with the most delicious artificial flavours, and it's still the best damned orange soda I've ever tasted.

When they were going out of business the local convenience store ordered many cases of Franks soda and I bought a bunch to hoarde.  I found a can in my closet about a year later and it was basically like treasure.  You can actually still buy Franks sodas online, for around $60 per six pack, or $10/can.

It may be worth it to be reminded of winning a little league game when I was nine years old.  Every time we won we'd get a Frank's soda (the only brand the local snack bars would stock) and a hot dog.  When we lost we'd get a Frank's soda.  I still think of little league a lot of times when I drink soda of any brand from a can.

I had the sampler of those waiting for me under the Xmas tree this year, but I have yet to brave them.  I'm not sure that I should.  I did, however, try the Jones Caramel Appel they had out for Halloween (http://www.jonessoda.com/files_new/flavours-limited-editions.html).  It tasted like artificial apple and artificial caramel, way to sweet, but tolerable in the small cans.  I eventually finished off the entire six-pack, but dank the last one mostly just to get it out of the fridge.

I enjoy Fresca.  It has a nice astringent quality to it.  But then, who's the guy who bought a six-pack of Stella Artois this weekend just because a depressed cartoon cat on the Intenet recommended it (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=01202006)?  Me.  (I am.)

Anybody else remember OK Soda (http://www.geocities.com/the_dolce/ok.html)?  I don't know how widely-distributed it was, but it was available in Boston the year I lived there.  It was a triumph of packaging over content; I bought it for the illustrations by Daniel Clowes and Charles Burns, not so much for the soda itself, which tasted a little like flat Cheerwine.

I'm more discerning now (although see paragraph 1, above).

We've bought both whiskey and vodka on the recommendations of a cartoon cat, if I recall.  But Stella is poo-pooed around my house as the Belgian beer for people who don't like Belgian beer.

I really like RC Cola, and when I was a kid we used to be able to buy it here on the shelves next to Coke and Pepsi, but not anymore.  Now all shelf space in stores is owned by either Coke or Pepsi.  They've even choked out Jolt and Dr. Pepper in most places, except just around Philly where Dr. Pepper is bottled and distrubuted by the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. in South Jersey (and Mr. Pibb isn't).
Title: Re: TAB(?)
Post by: acoxcae on January 23, 2006, 09:19:22 pm
RC Cola is a weird one, because for many years, I drank one RC Cola a year.  I like it, but the only time I ever drank it was when I was driving from San Francisco to Mendocino for my family Thanksgiving, we'd stop at a giraffe shanty around Bodega Bay to stretch for a second, and buy an RC.  Then, the first time I went grocery shopping in college, I was shocked to see whole cases of RC Cola just sitting on the shelves, waiting for me to buy it.  I bought one twelve pack, once, then stopped, because it took all the special away.  I do like it though, but it can't replace Coke as my cola of choice.  It's right next to Dr Pepper, I think, as a refreshing alternate beverage, but just above Ginger Ale, which I drink only on airplanes (I have no idea why) or with vodka, very late in the evening.

Diet RC in regular bottles?  Where are you buying this stuff, some shady back-alley cola distributor in Colombia?  I think the worst I ever got was a completely intact, fully sealed, completely empty can, but I've never gotten the wrong soda.  I think maybe it's time for a distributor change.

Perhaps this is because that is the practically only place left where they regularly offer you that fine beverage.  I've asked for ginger ale in a restaurant and been told "We have Sprite."  Sprite!  Sprite!   Sprite is to ginger ale as, as,I don't know,  mice are to motorcycles!  There is no relation whatsoever.

My previous SO basically only drank ginger ale. A lot of places would offer her a substitute* made with Coke and Sprite or something equally stupid.

*Most certainly NOT a best-itute
Title: Re: TAB(?)

I often get ginger ale on planes. My reasoning tends to be that, in a day of air travel, I will be drinking more soda than is healthy or comfortable, and ginger ale feels lighter / less "soda-y" than cola. Of course, lately I've realized that train of thought and just started getting cranberry juice instead.

(Incidentally, does cranbery juice carry any kind of stigma of bladder infection? I just prefer it as a "drink during the day" juice, but I've started to develop this irrational fear that the flight attendants always think I am engaging in a Brave Fight Against UTIs or something.)

I've never cared much for RC, but the SO* is a big fan of RC Edge and still keeps a hoard of it that he acquired right before it stopped prduction. I don't entirely grok hoarding soda, especially since he hasn't actually drunken any of this stuff since I've been aware of it, but hey, whatever works...

* Feel free to substitute a synonym for "male object of affection" of your choice if you think "SO" is too PC-sounding.

Because Lord knows I haven't.  Nor have I had Sundrop Swirl ice cream (http://64.29.223.174/news.asp?parm=274), another softdrink-flavored frozen treat exclusively available at Food Lion stores in the Southland.  (Food Lion, you may remember, is an NC-based grocery store chain, made briefly famous (http://www.cnn.com/US/9701/23/food.lion/) for an ABC "Prime Time Live" segment that "accused the supermarket chain of selling rat-gnawed cheese, expired meat, and old giraffe and ham that had been washed in bleach to kill its smell."

I have reason to believe that you are referring to Fitz's, the best damn tiny soda maker ever.  (The sodas aren't tiny, but they're a relatively tiny presence, nationally.)  You're doing well to be looking forward to them, since they're AWESOME.  The food at the restaurant isn't much, but they have 2 bars - an alcohol-type bar upstairs with the pool tables, and the Fitz's bar downstairs with like 15 awesome varieties of Fitz's sodas.  They're all just delicious.  UPS me some after I move, won't you?

It's not even that I have specific tastes - it's just that...no one else ever offers it.  I don't really think about it until the flight attendant is like, "Coke?  Sprite?  Ginger Ale?" and all of a sudden I'm like, "Yeah, ginger ale!  Exactly!"

As a side note to all in regard to ginger ale and plane rides: I was always raised to suck on a piece of actual Ginger or a Ginger candy on plane and boat rides as it is a natural anti-nausea agent, and this is also why one is encouraged to drink Ginger Ale should they have food poisoning, as I once did.

Also, in regard to RC Cola, I have had cans of RC Cola that are half empty, and also ones that are totally uncarbonated.  Fascinating.  I haven't had RC Cola in years, but the convienince store near the first apartment my SO and I shared about 3 1/2 yrd ago had "three for a dollar" RC Cola's so my SO and I would occasionally get these and marvel at the varied quality of each can, sipping from each other's cans to confirm that they do indeed differ in distinct ways.

They also had sangria soda. I considered ordering it just to taste it but I felt really out of place. I was the only person speaking english, the two guys in front of me both ordered tongue tacos, and when I asked for no sour cream the guy looked like I'd insulted him. So I just wanted to get my burrito and go. It was sitting right next to a pineapple/piņa soda and looked almost identical but was a little lighter in color.

Good burrito, though.

Sangria soda is good.  At least one brand is, the other I tried was nasty.  It's not all that exotic, really, kind of cola-y and fruity.

Sangria soda is good.  At least one brand is, the other I tried was nasty.  It's not all that exotic, really, kind of cola-y and fruity.

I would love to go to a place that has tongue tacos but I assume you're going to tell me it's somewhere in Northern Virginia, where I never go anymore?

Indeed. It's in Arlington on Washington Blvd diagonal from Talllula, a really good place for wine. I went because I had yesterday off and one of the GOG's in the Post said it was a good place for a cheap counter-service lunch and he was right.

No, there are 4 black people in Utah.  The hispanic population is probably well over 10% of the total population.  It was like 9% in 2000.  It's the only minority we got.

On the subject of "vile beverages I tried for inexplicable reasons":

Today, at the collegge juice bar, I got something called "Jammin' Juice Ginger Party." It claimed to be a Caribbean-style pineapple/ginger mix, with "sweet spices." I was curious, so I went for it... and HOLY SHIT. Yes, Virginia, pineapple and ginger mix exactly as poorly as you'd think! I passed it around tonight, and I got several very precious reactions from friends:

Friend 1: "Oh my God, it smells like antiseptic. Like a bad Chinese grocery store!"
Friend 2: "It smells like a dog!"
Friend 1: "... none of these things smell anything like each other."

Anyway, if you like beverages that suck, I recommend it highly. I took one swig and the taste stayed in my mouth for 20 goddamn minutes. Eegah.

I mean, hell, we even call the transitive verb "to looksomething up and post a link to it" to CortJstr or just CJ it.

I should just shoot 1000 cans your way, my good man.

One of the most disappointing things about Utah...OK, who am I kidding, it all sucks here.  But one thing that does suck is 40 oz. bottles of OE are only available in liquor stores.  You can find really shitty and weak stuff in 40 oz. bottles at gas stations and grocery stores, but if you wanna be gangsta, you can only do it between the hours of 10 AM and 10 PM (sometimes 7 PM), and never on Sundays, election days, and holidays.

Which means there is one Starbucks for every 2,294 square miles in Utah.

By compasion, there are 208 Starbucks in New York City, or one every 2.25 square miles. Although I believe the general rule is that you are supposed to be able to stand at a Starbucks in the Big Apple, turn in a circle, and be able to see at least one additional Starbucks.

Most of those Starbucks are probably in the Wasatch Front/Park City area (just checked, all but one, it looks like.  The other one's in St. George).  So it's not as bad as it seems.

Here's a map.

That bigger circle up top, that's the area I'm talking about.  I live somewhere in that black dot, in Draper.  Paul, that black dot Southeast of me, that's you, I think.  And St. George is at the bottom of the map.  Nothing besides polygamists and anti-UN nuts exists outside of those two circles.

Since the board is all about education, and since it's somewhat related to the discussion, here is a fun fact about Canada:  liquor can only be purchased from the Liquor Controle Commission (aka the LC), with the exception of wine, which can be purchased at either the Liquor Controle Commission or a private wine shops.  The private wine shops can only carry wine - absolutely no beer or hard stuff.  There are many LC's around but there is no such thing as a grocery store or (god forbid) convenience store that carries booze in the Great White North.  Larger grocery stores all tend to carry non-alcoholic sparkling beverages, non-alcoholic beer, the non-alcoholic mixes for booze (Daiquiri mix for example) and sometimes even beer and wine making kits, but the booze itself?  Nope!

This makes more sense to me than Indiana's rules - in Indiana, you can buy beer or wine at a grocery store, and you can buy liquor at some grocery stores.  The prime rule keeping liquor stores in business is that for some reason, you can't sell *cold* beer at a grocery store.  This, apparently, crosses the line.  The defense of this rule is that drunk drivers are enabled by being able to buy cold beer at the grocery store - apparently having to go to the liquor store lessens their urge to drink, I don't know.

I hate Indiana.

In Utah you can only buy liquor and wine from State liquor stores, and in Washington it's the same with liquor.  It was so weird the first time I stepped into a grocery store in Tucson, AZ and saw the liquor aisle.  Did I say weird?  I meant divine.

Wow acoxcat, that totally sucks the big teat.  It's basically silly.

When it comes to the cost of booze, all I know is that wine is definitly significatly cheeper in the U.S. as your country has many climates a kin to actually growing grapes (okay, there are a few places in Canada that grow grapes, but really.  Really.), and that when I was a kid, my parents always stocked up on huge amounts of booze at the duty free shop at the border.

I believe they can--when I tended bar in PA many moons ago we sold six-packs of wine coolers.  (Or I should say, we had them available for sale.  Didn't actually sell that many.)

To sell carry-out beer, your establishment had to do a certain percentage of your business in food.  I am quite sure that our bar routinely falsified the books to make it look like we sold more food than we did in order to meet this requirement.

Yeah, bars can sell packaged beer, wine cooler, and malt beverages (Smirnoff Ice, Mike's Hard Whatever, &c.).

And delis and such can pretty easily (although EXPENSIVELY) get a liquor license that enables them to sell beer, malt beverages, wine coolers, &c., but not hard liquor or wine.

Resturants and bars can of course serve all manner of spirits, but cannot sell packaged hard liquor or wine.

Also, we have some small wineries in PA that can sell their own wares on the premises.

Virginia indeed has rules that pretty much prohibit "bars" as the rest of the world knows them. And it was recently big news when some of the ABC stores (state-owned liquor shops) started opening on Sunday. But not the one near my house. Dammit.

I am reminded of my old friend Tara, who argued (quite seriously) that closing the shops on Sundays was good because it gave people one less reason not to go to church (which was something EVERYONE should have been doing anyway), and furthermore that in addition to the holidays they currently close for, they should close for Valentine's Day, because (again, she was serious) people who were single might be tempted to drown their loneliness in alcohol, AND THE STATE SHOULD NOT LET THAT HAPPEN. And St. Patrick's Day, because there was "already enough debauchery associated with that day."

Tara had a unique worldview.

Tara had a unique worldview.

Not that unique.  This was the exact argument I heard in Alabama, where as I recall:

No packaged alcohol can be sold after midnight.
No alcohol can be served after 2 AM.
Establishments which serve alcohol must get at least 50 percent of their revenue from food items*.
Except in 2-3 counties which have legalized it, no alcohol may be served or sold on Sunday outside of private clubs, and then only after noon.
Grocery stores can sell beer, wine, and "coolers," but not hard liquor.
Gas stations can sell beer and "coolers," but the vessels can not be larger than 20oz.
Liquor stores can operate independently, and sell any form of alcohol.
State ABC stores sell any form of alcohol, and generally more cheaply, but I don't believe they are open on Sundays.

A church in my college town successfully prevented an Outback Steakhouse from being built by lobbying to refuse to grant them "private club" status (and thus preventing them from selling alcohol on Sundays).  This was because the proposed site was just down the block from the church, and I guess all those eight dollar Aussie-ritas would entice their loyal flock into lives of excess and debauchery.

I heard stories from parties at Mississippi State that you couldn't buy cold alcohol there, so any party would include a large cooler (or bathtub) full of icewater to quickly cool it down.  Mythbusters in action!

*A mini-expose about the creative bookkeeping involved in maintaining this ratio was interesting.  For instance, any non-alcoholic portion of a drink (the orange juice in a screwdriver, the coke in a rum and coke, a wedge of lime, soda water) would be tabulated as food, AND its price would be based on the proportion of that mixer to the drink as a whole.  So if you bought a $5 Jack and Coke and the Coke was 4/5ths of the drink, $4 would go on the food budget.

And thus was the world made safe for democracy once more.

I'm sure that this action seriously made the Outback people sit down and really THINK about what they were doing to civilization, causing them to realize the path to destruction they were leading everyone to, and immediately pulled all offensive beverages and other substances from the menu, and further to close down on religious days and make their employees volunteer to take people without transportation to the church of their choice.

Either that, or they said, "Balls to that city, mate*" and reopened fifteen miles down in the next town, making the residents of your college town drive twenty minutes to get a Bloomin' F'in Onion.

* As I understand it, the real crime Outback is guilty of is marketing their restaurants as some kind of Aussie cuisine when in fact there's nothing Australian about it.

It's even better than that -- I've heard rumors (note: I have never tried this) that you are allowed to have an open container as long as it's the passenger's. This conjures many images of wonder and delight:

"Sir, why are you drinking daiquiris out of a beer helmet while driving?"

"Hey, these aren't mine! They're my passenger's! See, he's got the drinky hose."

"Ah, all right. Carry on, sir."
