Link to strip (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=03032006).
The bleakness of the snack tent is not lost on Ray. Is the brandy so vile that he can only bring himself to consume it by the sporkful?

The brandy is an scalable modular vertically integrated b2b cots alcohol delivery solution that is customer reactive, goals driven, service oriented and progresses on a go-forward paradigm in Onstad's commodity vision space to maximize marketshare and ROI while minimizing TCO and sigma DIOS MIO

Whoa, it IS ok to sleep? (I am a broken record about sleep! yayy)
I hope no one springs an attack on Ray while he's vulnerable. I guess Roast Beef has his back. And after this strip, that's made more depressing.
I'm so torn! I want both of them to win. I'm such a girl, even about the GOF.
Maybe because it's quarter to four a.m. If I sleep on this, I will know the right thing for Ray to do.
-
Why would you buy a turkey and some whiskey and then shoot yourself BEFORE consuming them?
-

Because you've only got a spork.
-

Step 1: stare bleakly at table with depressing "celebratory" turkey, brandy, and plastic spork.
Step 2: Realize that your life has fallen so far that this constitutes celebration, brandy-sporking included.
Step 3: Self-inflicted gunshot wound.
-
I suspect that Roast Beef really is that much of a dogg. Last strip he saw Ray channel one of his adolescence heroes, and he has been grooming Ray to conquer pretty well all through the GOF. They may come out of this even stronger buds, if that was non-homosexually possible. The question is, will Beef roll over for him, or will it be an actual fight?
-
I think it's time for the Son of Rodney's inevitable fall, and it comes from getting drunk. Natch. How in hell is he gonna fight on day 3 with a hangover?
I'd love it if Beef came into the tent and kicked Ray's ass while he's in this state.
-
how are you not realizing what is going on here?
ray is going to sleep through the last day of the fight.
that is how he will survive, and end this arc without having to kill 2000 or so more people.
because he is ray, he might also be rewarded as if he had killed a large portion of them.

I think you are right. Ray will sleep through day 3 awaking just in time for his big final confrontation with Beef. We've seen what Ray can do on the acres anyway. It's time to see what Beef is made of. How well will his intimate knowledge of the game serve him? At this point I don't know. Before I thought Beef was destined to be the winner, but now I feel it could go either way (fuckin' Onstad writing a Classic). But it would be pretty classic Ray to make a promise to Beef (if only in his mind) and then totally let him down leaving him to fend for himself on day 3.
I love the GOF. I bought 2 shirts.

Wow. What a beautiful mix of humour and character development. Which is I guess the trademark of the GOF strips. For some reason, Ray's sad-drunkenness gets me every time. Best alt-text, too.
I think this arc is getting Onstad to be more adventurous (read: violent) with his artwork. I don't think a couple of months ago we would've seen a retired band teacher with his blood splattered all over the wall. This is by no means a bad thing.
-
Ray and Beef both die on the third day of the GOF. Whether they both arrive at the same destination after death is anybody's guess. I can easily picture them at a dive bar in Hell the next night getting all philosophical about cigars and Asian cuisine, except that Heaven seems to be Beef's more usual destination.
-
So this is going to end like one of Ray's dates.
-
Ray was drinking the brandy by the sporkful because he wanted to control and limit his intake. As usual he wasn't able to control his baser urges.
-
MONDAY. Reenactment of the fight scene from They Live. Carried out over the next six weeks. Approxamately 675 panels.
Beef will win.
No wait, I think Ray will win.
No...
-
To me, it looks like Ray didn't get too plastered. Although he knocked off most of the brandy, he was making complete sense, even there at the end. Not that he'd slur in his own mind or anything, but he has had plenty of the booze-fueled stupids in his time.

The GOF is all about baser urges. I agree with theinevitable that Ray will, as always, be rewarded for being Ray--i.e., cold solid id.
-
brandy-sporking included.
This just turned into the Frank Cho message board (http://www.comicscommunity.com/boards/frankcho/) (NSFW) when I wasn't looking.
The first 5 panels are like a diagram of the stages of grief. They ought to use them for a brochure.

I don't know about that; the switch from addressing himself in the third person in panel eight to the first person in the rest of the strip does not fill me with confidence regarding his sanity. I interpreted this switch as an alcohol-induced delusional state. We can only hope this particular cheap brandy does not have any of the alarming effects attributed to Cisco (http://www.bumwine.com/cisco.html).
(Note: I have mentioned this site before, but once you visit it, I think you will agree that it bears repeating.)
Have another spork of Christian Brothers.
-
Do it for the children
-
Either Ray forgot to take the NoDoz or someone removed it from the tent before it could be administered. That makes me think Ray will indeed sleep though the important parts of the GOF.
At my next booze party, I'm going to replace all the shot glasses with sporks.

I remember at a party in high school a guy arguing the merits of the 4-prong spork over the lowly 3-pronger. But I must say that when it comes to beverage comsumption I'm thinking fewer slots would be better.
I should probably mention this was a drama party and it was like 4am. But still.
-
The band teacher was left-handed. The gunshot wound wasn't self-inflicted. He was assassinated.

Hmmm... I suppose we all should have noticed that a feast of *turkey* and *brandy* is a sneaky move by the fight planners. By this point, you're approaching 48 hours and fear & rage are probably all that're keeping you going. Unless you're up on meth or something (my guess: roughly ~30-40% of the fight) sleep is a real danger. Downing a whole glutton's Thanksgiving in one sitting isn't a great idea at that point...

Hey, Rodney did it! Or at least I think we can assume that Rodney did it.
The longer this goes on, the more I believe that Beef will be the winner. He has done numerous, elaborate case studies on all of the other contestants, nailing down their weaknesses to one simple achilles heel (Someone mentions the pasta maker pro and your wife spreads!) and one defeating move-- and who besides the Cassandra "Roast Beef" Kazenzakis would know Ray's weaknesses better? He'll have the old boy hollering "A BLOO BLOOO BLLOOOOOO!" before the fight is over.

Keef, two days in a row, how's it goin' hometown?
I'm still leaning towards Beef mainly for the very reasons you've stated, but he possesses weakness too. My latest thinking has Ray fall on his sword giving Beef a hollow victory which would be worse for him than if he were defeated.

It's goin' all right, g-money; grad-school, workin', Austin.
See, I don't think that's true. It keeps returning to the fact that when it comes to the fight, Roast Beef is a stone cold motherfucker. He doesn't get all nostalgic over sporks of Christian Brothers and the notion that he might have to beat up his old buddy; he keeps so goddamn tight-lipped the brother doesn't even have thought balloons. He wears the shades, he shows no facial expressions, and he straight-up mowed a dude down two days ago. I know it ain't exactly ripping off the non-moneymaking part of a dude's mandible, but I think Beef's ready to bring the pain.
I just hope we don't get any more interjections from the homefront unless it's really worth it. Teodor readin' some blogs don't exactly rile the blood.

Why supply a link when three-quarters of TOUAMB's users have their entire Bookmarks folder to browse?
-
"He knows I fugue."
That line was so much bigger than the alt text. Come on.
Also, the illustration of Ray's turned head as he slowly collapses is beautiful.

Thanks, Leroy. Let me guess - Bugs Meany was the trigger man?

Encyclopedia Brown was my mentor at the police academy, but the dude's stumbled upon difficult times, what with Monk and all the clairvoyant detectives working the streets.

she is implying that we have a thing for corpulent women.

Well, look, you gotta admit: fat-bottomed girls, they make the rockin' world go 'round.
That is all.

it should now be obvious to everyone that mr achewood does steal ideas off off jough

Nah, there's no stealing. I told you, there is no Chris Onstad. It's just a nom de guerre.

This thread is sporktacular. Sporktacular I say. Sporktacular.

It's s-porkalifragilisticexpialdocious.
I can't see Ray being in any condition to win tomorrow but Beef setting him up seems far too harsh, although he could justify it in that the choice was Ray's. More likely he is planning on Ray being out of comission just long enough to set up his win.
The alternative is that Beef has been planning this for years and simply used Ray as his way of getting in and gaining enough credibility to manipulate the fight. Under these circumstances Beef could win (though it seems very un-beef) but I just can't actually picture something going that well for Beef.
Proviso: It all happens off camera and the next strip is Ray waking up at his house, Beef telling him 'Yeah dogg you were totally out such as a baby.'
No one knows the real identity of the man who won the fight, he wasn't BOC, wasn't in any preliminaries and he disappeared right after winning.
Then Beef retires to the poolshed, passing a newly aquired trophy.

I certainly hope not, for various reasons.
