Damn, I was certain "No Job" would've been number 1.  Oh well, you can't win 'em all.

I'm number one!  I'm number one!

It seems like such an honor...but, well, it's not.

Yay number 7!  Except.. my salary is nowhere near that.   Well shit...

Maybe if I didn't live in a place with a reasonable annual cost of living.  Hrm...

College professor looks pretty good from here though let me tell you.

Personell Manager? I can't even fathom how that could possibly be that high. I guess the pay must be high for such a lame position.

WTF?  $81,491?  I could have stayed in my job till I was a hundred and I'd never have gotten anywhere near that, the way things were going.

Paralegal?  Sure, if you like doing endless amounts of work and not being recognised or paid for it.

Writer?  Bullshit.

How is doctor/physician number 30?  The money more than makes up for the life you sacrifice to get there.

Does it count if my eventual, ideal career is on there (number 35)?

# 10!

does "psychiatrist" count as a doctor, or as a psychologist, or what?

although, Med School is like hell. I could probably not deal with it.

I'm assuming a psychiatrist counts as a doctor/physician, since psychiatrists have M.D.s.  Psychologists are not actually medical doctors.

How is doctor/physician number 30?  The money more than makes up for the life you sacrifice to get there.

I work for a group of physicians, and a close uncle is a doctor.  It sounds like it isn't what it used to be.  I don't know about my uncle, but all five of the physicians I work for, though very well respected and competent, with growing practices, have salaries that have been declining for at least a few years (rising cost of malpractice insurance, problems with insurance companies, and normal problems with running a small business).  Many doctors, especially in certain fields of practice, live in constant threat of malpractice lawsuits.  It takes a certain kind of person to be happy and successful as a doctor, and it doesn't just take compassion and intelligence.  The money you make and the respect you earn certainly makes up for years of debt and the grinder through which one is put while a medical resident, but I imagine there are drawbacks now that weren't there years ago that makes the job less appealing.

Same is true for professoring.  It's bizarre that they give it a high grade for not being too stressful.  I assume they only interviewed people who got their jobs 20 years ago - the junior untenured faculty don't have time to waste talking to a magazine!

Wow, they're... pretty optimistic about science, huh? As compared to most of the stuff I've actually been hearing, which seems to indicate that the NIH grants are running out and the sky is falling.

Really this whole thing is very silly.  Like those lists of 'best places to live.'  It's such an individual thing.  How can they expect anyone to take them seriously when they write that that one guy has the best job in America. I wouldn't want his job in a million years.  I'd rather.... yeah, pick up animal poop, even!

I've been in the government grant game for a long time. It goes in cycles. Plus, there is a war on and that won't last forever. More disciplined spending is really what is needed here - the government doles out money for silly stuff occasionally - also, more basic science. Leave the product development to those who stand to profit.

When (and it will happen) the political winds turn the other way, the money usually starts flowing more freely.

Say that in the middle of your first LSAT Prep Course class you want to drive a foil cutter into your temple.  Is this a bad sign?

See, phooey on the naysayers.

I'm really into this whole "Sort of trying to be a screenwriter but being cripplingly inconfident and dying behind a Ralphs in North Hollywood, lying in a bed of the steaming remains of your dreams" career path thing.

Nah. Standardized tests aren't actually very much like whatever they're supposed to be prepping you to do; if you feel the same in your first law class, that's a indicator of a problem.

Did anyone else take that Strong aptitude test in high school, where you answered how you felt about a number of things and then they told you what your ideal job would be?

I still remember my top three:

Architect
Home Furnishings Designer
Ballistic Missile Technician (or something like that)

I was really into playing and studying music at the time and was dismayed that musician wasn't higher up on my list (it didn't show up in the top 10).

However, now I am kind of an architect and designer, so THE TEST WAS RIGHT AFTER ALL.  I didn't plan on doing computer design work for a living, I just kind of fell into it as a hobby that grew into a career. DAMN YOU, APTITUDE TESTS!

Mine said "Shitty Worthless Writer who will die penniless"

Or something similar.  Seriously the top 3 were all artsy jobs that I would love to have if only I had the nerve and the metabolism to do without food and shelter at random times.

So, basically being a coward, I went into computers for which I also had a strange (yet uncompelling) knack.  It's... it's kind of creative.. I... guess?  *silently weeps*

I believe mine said psychology, which was great, because I was a huge psychology wonk at the time. Then I decided Psych was too fluffy and went into Bio instead... which led me to Neuro. DESTINY?

and we can't figure it out... they just skipped a year or something. kids above and below us took it... we did not.

We never took the test at my school, because we had to sign a document with our own blood before we graduated saying that we would settle down immediately after college to a life of homemaking and childbearing.

And V, PSYCHIATRIC GENETICS is clearly the answer.

I never took one of those tests.  But I thought about what you'd have thought I'd grow up to be if you had observed me as a child.  The first weird nerdy thing I ever did was try to write a book about insects. (Insects being really the only wildlife that one can observe regularly in the Bronx.)  So I guess that since in my life I have published some things, and now am feeding insects to animals... I have managed to fulfill my destiny in a roundabout way.

I am going to be a teacher. I would like to be a teacher. My test which told us what we should do said I should teach as well. I want to teach, desperately. I cannot wait to teach. I would like to teach History or English or Music.

I would like to be a teacher.

I would like to be a teacher.

I have a daughter that would like that as well.  It must be nice to know at 15 what you want your career to be.  I surely didn't.  I think I'm getting pretty close to figuring it out now, if I can just make it pay...

Mine said I should be a scientist or a mechanic. I am a scientist (more or less), and I just changed my oil all by myself yesterday, so I think the test was right!

Hobot-- we can do it together! we can be neighbors! Our spouses will go off to work, and our kids will play together while we drink gin and play bridge.

We have to shadow someone in a career we're interested in next week. I was just dying to ask if I could follow someone's "Homemaker" mother... but... I didn't have the balls.

So instead I'm doing community service. Which will be better, because, you know... i won't be doing it just to be wierd. also: helping people.

I think my number one from that test was 'optic lens engineer.'  Whenever it asked "do you like/are you good at math," I chose the maximum positive.

Lawyer was never very high on the list for me.  I think librarian was # 1 (which I considered for some time).  Clergy member was up there, too.  The fuck?

AW, you just laid out the greatest hinch, making something you like or even love pay off enough to do for a living.

I thought I wanted to be a teacher until I found out from friends who were teaching what they faced, then I ran away. Prolly for the best. I really like most of what I'm doing currently and they just offered me to go from contract to perm, so I guess that's good enough.

As to high school testing, I remember taking the ASVAB (?IIRC?) aptitude tests for the military with my senior class jammed in the cafeteria. I guess I scored really well in the sections the USMC were interested in 'cause I had a standing phone call from a recruiter every week for like a year. He even found me when I moved. Persistent folks, they must've thought I'd make a good kill-bot.

Generally, athletes make decent military types. They're used to working as a group to achieve goals, and they're generally physically fit. Or maybe the recruiter was low on his quota or something.

'Cause I'm an over-achiever who's also over-compliant to group norms.

Well, you do fit in well around here.  Never a bit of trouble out of you...
