Is Beef hitting himself in the head a la Rainman?
Also, more exposition. Whee.
-
wow what a shitty thread title. Should have been this process will
-
i like how phillippe is basically living out an episode of punky brewster.
-
I can only wonder if Onstad had this strip in mind when he originally ran the Ray dogshit strip. If so, I am impressed by his tenacity in saving the Beef strip for so long. I suppose I'll never know.
Stellar strip. #1 Cholo.
-
Phillipe likes Dale Jr. Man, I hope Teodor gets his chance to shine in this arc. Teodor is so underused!
-
hmm.
the idea that he is stuck in a loop is delicious.
-
I don't think that this has much of anything to do with Ray stepping in dog crap ... IIRC that "arc" was just a couple Ray-is-nostalgic bits, and it really doesn't tie into Beef's poopphobia.
I just hope Philippe doesn't get stuck in the fridge.
-
Is suffocation even a problem for alive stuffed animals? That said, there are thousands of ways this plan could go screamingly, terribly wrong.
I really like how, in the first panel, you can't see the dog shit at all. It's Ambush Poo, apparently.
-
Oh Beef; have my retarded baby. What can I say? I am a sucker for neuroses laden people.
Anyway is it better to be the #1 Cholo? I mean if you had to be a cholo would you want to be the best cholo? I think I'd rather be the worst one so that I could be closest to being as non-cholo related as possible. I suppose it depends on if you're using the word to mean "Peasant" as it means in South America or if it's some sort of urban gangster pride thing. Confounding!
-
Emeril runs like a girl.
-
Ten points for use of the word "poo".
-
Any character who can survive to the end of a three-hundred-man brawl on his wits alone yet fall into a neurotic loop and pass out over stepping in dog-leavings is my kinda character.
-
Beef is officially me. I get into loops like this in so many situations.
none are as great as this, though.
-
three-hundred-man brawl

I have been trapped in a fridge. I was 13, and playing hide and seek. Isn't that always the way.
Onstad, if Phillipe is going to Davy Jones Locker in a fridge, I will have your (second) baby. All 'no I'm sinking, at least the fridge is airtight'. In the next panel, his air-deprived body lies trapped in the fridge, or a submarine blows the fridge up, or something.
On the other hand, he is a stuffed animal, so he wouldn't die of asphyxiation, just be stuck in the fridge forever. ALMOST as amusing, and a good way to kill him off plotwise, not that anyone wants that. Apart from Q, but he's like that smurf who hates everything.
Can stuffed animals go to hell?
-

Oh stop it, you're just trying to entice me into my dreamworld.
(In all reality without the cuteness Achewood would lose a certain angle in that there would be no "Innocent" pawn to do horrible things to and that would indeed be missed. But I, for one, could do without seeing that little fucker dancing with a cake ever again.)
-
wait. wait.
you were trapped in a fridge only two years ago, and you're suggesting that Phillipe should die in a fridge accident?
Hey Judy, stick your finger in these little holes in the wall... I swear, my mom said it was ok.

Everyone, here is your chance one again to see how teenagers develop. In my first year of teenagerhood, I got trapped in a fridge. In my third year, I very nearly made an inappropriate comment involving inevitable's mum.
I am sorry for this, inevitable. I do not know why this happened. It was all those potentially innuendoic words mixed together. I am sorry.
-
In my third year, I very nearly made an inappropriate comment involving inevitable's mum.
*whsipers* Go ahead Judy.. you know you want to... do it do it do it do it do it do it
*titters like a schoolgirl*
-
In my third year, I very nearly made an inappropriate comment involving inevitable's mum.
I don't know how inappropriate that is, Judy. I mean, theinevitable's mum is a filthy whore, after all.
-
that reminds me of something I was saying to Hobot last night... wait... nevermind.
actually, what my mom said was "putting your fingers in those holes is like... imagine it's Judy's mom. It isn't very safe unless you use a condom."
my dad and a bunch of his friends heard. They all laughed, because come on dude, your mom is a huge slut. I heard one time she had her pu$$y wrapped entirely around this guy's head. TRUE STORY.
The stage of teenage development that I am at:
I was so close to saying one of these two things:
Actually, my mom passed away when I was 10. I was using "mom" more generally
a friend of mine actually used that one. The kid who she said this to cried. She then moved away, so I think he still has that on his conscience.
or:
Yeah, actually my parents are divorced because my mom was cheating on my dad.
so yeah, she is a slut. I hate her.
-
theinevitable's mum is a filthy whore, after all.
She's such a whore that she lives in a log cabin she built in Gina's pu$$y, and loves it.
-
She's such a whore that she lives in a log cabin she built in Gina's pu$$y, and loves it.
I once asked her how the view was but all she said was "MURFFF BURRF HURRRR" mostly because it's really hard to talk with my dick in her mouth.
(That's what you get for trying to goad me with your Hobot talk TI. THAT IS WHAT YOU GET!)
-
yeah, well, she told me about that. we were trading embarassing stories-- I told her about the time I went back in time and fucked your mom. THAT'S RIGHT, I AM YOUR DAD.
side_show: Oh yeah!? Well, I heard that you only get to go to indonesia because you're a huge slut! You... you fuck dudes! A lot of them!
-
Sorry Dan, I was using humour above and hope that you understood that I do not know anything of your maternal situation. Your mom may or may not be a total filthy fuck*ng whore. I have no idea either way. I was just trying to diffuse the tension with SONG.
Also, my mom did die when I was eleven, but I usually will not mention this if someone insults my mother on a message board.
-

Damn man, way to bum everybody out. If it wasn't so close to your Birthday I would chide you.*
*Really, I am very sorry to hear about your mom.
-
dang. My maternal situation is actually good. I was just being silly. I did not particularly take offense (Q's comment, on the other hand, will earn him some vengeance.)
I am sorry that I said people's mom's were whores.
Jough, that is such a sad thing.
-

So help me, I am not fighting man, but if you insult my dear mother one more time I will rip your arm off and beat your skinny ass. WHITE BOY
I feel sorry for this thread. From a nice discussion to mum insults. This is the kind of board we all peruse.
-
At least no one has threatened to shank someone and leave them in a ditch yet.
-
Don't get me started.. I will stab some jaws if need be... but there are a lot of people here, I may have to outsource some shanking to Ash.
-
Christ, forget shanking, I'll rip yer fuck*ng ankles off!
I will walk away now. This thread has been raped for long enough.
-
So mom-talk aside, did it take anybody else several panels to realize that Beef meant "dog shit" literally and not just as an exclamation? I thought he'd pulled/torn a muscle. After all they went running after Philippe without stretching first.
-
Three Thousand.
Yeah, definitely no longer post before my morning coffee.
-

Yeah, I definitely thought this for a while.
I totally missed the mom-insults part of this thread. What a shame. This is what I get for sleeping in. Why did I get mentioned, though?
-

TI was attempting to goad me, I wouldn't worry about it, because, as usual: I win.

I'm kind of intrigued at the "junkie darts" idea. Do they throw Teodore at the dart board, or do they throw darts at him? Only time will tell.
-
#1 CHOLO, BITCHES
¡NUMERO U-N-O!

No, because 'SKLURCH!' is clearly not the sound of twisting your ankle.
-
No, because 'SKLURCH!' is clearly not the sound of twisting your ankle.
If you twisted it hard enough, it would go SKLURCH.
I find it odd that I consider Roast Beef's mishap as the 'side bit' of today's comic and Phillipe's choosing as the 'main bit', despite having many less panels. Not many comics can do this.
-

They throw their heroin needles at him. JUNKIES. Get it? It's klind of a sly joke.

I can only wonder if Onstad had this strip in mind when he originally ran the Ray dogshit strip. If so, I am impressed by his tenacity in saving the Beef strip for so long. I suppose I'll never know.
Today's strip puts that one under a totally different light. Was Ray taking snapshots of his foot sunk in dogshit just to freak Beef out? And all the while he kept talking about "old times" Beef was going god ohhh god ohhhhh this... juuust... ruuuuuude on the other end? We'll never know...
Anyway, I still can't figure out how one can get stuck in a fridge, to be honest. I too grew up under this parental anathema (especially since my uncles owned a grocery store and I enjoyed playing in the parking lot behind it where there was always an old fridge or two lying around). But even then I thought "come on, if you don't need that much strength to open a fridge from the outside, how hard can it be to do it from the inside, where you could even use your legs to kick it open?". But still, I never dared to put my theory to test.
Unless the whole lore comes from the days of those really old fridges with that lever-thing kind of handle that actually seemed to make things more complicated.
-

I think that's it exactly. Which is why you don't see fridges with door latches anymore, despite the fact that they are probably more efficient at keeping the cold air in.
-
For a second, I thought Beef had somehow soiled hiimself, then I realized he had stepped in dog poo.
Is the rest of the storyline going to have Phillipe trying naively to decide between bad options?
"Maybe I can use that old box full of rusty nails to climb up to the next level of trash! Or that rusty drum leaking the glowing blue liquid!"
-
oh man. Judy, I am sorry. I was making a joke about your mom giving birth. Because that is a thing that occurs during birth.
I saw it in a movie. I thought you would get it. sorry.
Hobot: you were mentioned because I was being rediculous. also, because you are my Oedipal Mother.
Jough! Jough! I was reading old posts and I saw this!
Personally, I don't think the end will come until we see a sticker depicting Calvin peeing on Hobbes.
goodness me!
-
I totally can't even keep track of all the trash-talkin' in this thread. Good show, boys, good show.
-
To revive the inappropriate trash-talkin' thread: this actually happened to me last weekend, when a few friends of mine and I went to dinner due to my hell of depression. Things inevitably turned to "your mom" jokes, at which point this conversational gambit hit the table:
A FRIEND OF MINE: Yeah, your mom's mom's a whore!
ME: ... my mom's mom has a brain tumor.
FRIEND: ... ... ... ... ... oh my god I'm a terrible person.
Hilarity! Except not.
-
See my bleak and cynical side is basically waiting for either you or jough to reveal that indeed both your moms are fine, and that they have tea and danties together every afternoon. I am actually afraid to express sympathy, because it has gotten to the point where I assume everyone here is not opposed to using your mothers as a point of creating humour.
I tend to think of you, V'Adore, as basically not being a cunt, so in that case, I'm really sorry to hear about your mom. That is bunko. Boo to tumours, boo! Having been through hella' depression, all I can tell you is that it is good to force yourself to go out socially.
I tend to think of you, jough, as the sort of guy who would lie about the premature death of you mom as an elaborate set up to a joke that's punchline is not yet delivered, and have bassically been waiting for you to dick slap us all in the face. If I am wrong, I am sorry, if not - BRING. IT. ON!
-
Yeah, sorry, no joke here.
As far as depression goes, I tend to hole-up and work (which incidentally is what I also do when I'm not depressed).
Someone asked me after I launched Plagiarist.com how I was able to manually scan, OCR, and edit 4,000 poems (it's like 10,000 now) in about six weeks (in which time I also taught myself PHP and built the rest of the site) and I told them that it helps to have a really bad breakup with the love of your life, and then do nothing else but build a huge web site for six weeks.
Incidentally, I launched Plagiarist.com on 10 September 2001, and then took it down the next day to put up a black page with a link to the Red Cross for a week before finally launching a week late. Thanks, terrorists.
Anyway, the day it finally went live I also took an IT contract that required me to show up on site 9-5 as though I were a regular employee (and I pretty much was, except in how I got paid and the fact that I got no benefits). The work wasn't very interesting but I did enjoy the social aspects of it.
I think I had a point when I started typing up there, but now I forget what it was.
-
Well, that's not a bad response to heartbreak, I think. At least its better than hitting the bottle and going on a drunken fugue for a few days.
-
I think I had a point when I started typing up there, but now I forget what it was.
Dick slaps for all?
-
Oh? What are you telling me here, side_show? Because to me it sounded a lot like "I have too many tiny cans of Dr Pepper. Please take some away, Daddy."
Anything for you, sugar.
-
Hey I said "for all!"
That's okay. I basically deserved it.
-

My grandmother, actually -- my mom is fine, albeit stressed from family matters. The brain tumor was removed, but it was cancerous, and there's some evidence that it may have metastasized from elsewhere, so I think they're putting her on "make sure there's nothing left" chemo, on top of her rehab for the cognitive symptoms associated with the tumor.
I don't mean to be The One Who Goes On a Message Board To Tell An Uncaring Crowd About Her Problems, but yeah, life sort of sucks right now. With luck it's on its way up.
-
I'm sorry to go off the topic of moms but yeah, alive stuffed animals can suffocate or at least asphyxiate (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=04282005).

Nicely CortJstr'd, my man. Also, I had forgotten the alt-text, which made me laugh. NO ONE SURVIVED... BREAST ATTACK ON FUCK MOUNTAIN!

Activate the captioning!

That strip was the first new Achewood strip I ever read after two days of reading through the archives. It seemed very uncharacteristic of the comic at the time.
-
hm. the saddest thing: i do not remember the first Achewood I read. But I do remember the first "Real Life" I read.
actually, I probably didn't even read the newest one, and went straight to the archives.
just for the record, my "senior prophecy" ends with me living with an otter named Phillipe, living on a steady diet of empanadas and sopaipillas.

Yeah, chemo seriously, seriously sucks. It seems so counter to everything intuitive to attack someone's body so hard to make them better. May she be better, and may your days be sunny.

Thanks.
This is why cancer is such a bitch -- it's your body's own cells gone mad, so the only things that can kill it also kill healthy cells in droves. Ergo: painful, scary, somewhat inevitable, and difficult. Brain cancer conveniently combines the normal terror of cancer and the refreshing, tangy zip of Alzheimer's-style cognitive impairment, thus making it easily the most frightening of all possible ways to die.
-
goodness. cancer is terrifying.
all I can think of about chemo is from "Star Trek IV" (the whales).
mostly because my grandfather who had to have it lives in Chile. So I didn't see him during it.
but I do know that it is horrible. damn. I am so bad at expressing sympathy in a way that sounds genuine.
I am sorry that you have to deal with this. cancer, I think, can make all of us appreciate how amazingly complex our bodies are. the sheer number of things which go right each and every second is mind-boggling.
I think what side_show has said encapsulates it best. I hope for the best for your grandmother and your family (as well as plenty of sunshine.)
-
Thanks.

Oddly, this is analagous to war, too. I hope your grandmother fares well.
-
I'm astounded by the progress cancer treatment has made. My mother had a tumor in her colon, stage 2. Chemo and radiation downstaged it and they did surgery to remove it, and she's been fine since. Really amazing.
