They must have some weird school programming in Ray's old days. Ours just told us about condoms and aids. Damn Democrats (end sarcasim). Good to see he went ahead and got the Keith Moon head and the large laser as well. To bad Keith's eyes are closed, he does look happy though.
Ray is going to save the day again. I kind of forgot he was semi-responsible for all of this, what with burning some bowls, making some omelettes and watching Braveheart.
-
I'm not sure what you mean. I don't know if what you're saying means anything.
-
I am a huge fan of the fact that... there was no screwing around with this one, you know?
No insinuation, no slow-burn storyline, no dropping hints for something that will pop up in weeks:
Ray sees Insane Things he can buy on Rich People's eBay and the next strip, he is flying Airwolf and the disembodied head looks quite delighted. He flies Airwolf straight on 'til morning, directly into where it is needed for the plot.
Onstad seems to have figured out an interesting way to follow up the GOF... doing things the exact opposite way but just as well.
Airwolf is faster than any jet, Ray spends money like a rummy drinks wine purchased at Big Lots, the sky is blue, water is wet and all is right in the world.
It is as if the comic strip Achewood itself, not the artist, not the characters, not even the website but the comic strip itself is saying "Happy May Day, Comrades. May The Struggle Continue Proudly and You With It."
P.S. The concept of something shipping "Same-Day Airwolf" is pretty much the funniest thing ever.
-

That is probably the best review of a comic I have ever heard in my life. Thank you, good sir.
-
I don't know, this strip is cool but I wouldn't say it's anything special: Ray is being obscenely rich, Teodore is confused by the way Ray interacts with the world and there is a head in a jar. If I were less of a drooling nonety of a fan I might comment that it is a bit cheap to use Ray's unfathomable richness as a deus ex mechina for every situation, but actually like the bizzare ways the 'Stad comes up with for giving Ray what he needs in a given situation so really it's all good.
Although the interaction "'A pretty bad problem actually.' 'Awesome.'" is great but isn't as obvious because you have to go down a row to get it.
On an unrelated note, did you last two guys come in together or is the baseball thing just co-incidental? I see mets has 50 posts under his belt so I guess that doesn't necessarily qualify as a recent newb but it's an odd co-incidence to see the mets referenced twice one after another. That said I am in a country that knows nothing of your 'bases ball' so I guess it's more likely to catch my eye but means nothing to you, the same way people in my country like to use screen names based on our favourite marsupial crocodile wranglers.
-
I have Airwolf. This is not code language. I am flying Airwolf because I own Airwolf.
Nothing else I could say would make more sense given what I own and what I am doing at this moment.
-

Yea, I noticed that too. Keith Hernandez was this awesome first baseman that played for the mets and cardinals, did a lot of cocaine and appeared on Seinfeld. I would have said something, but didn't want to be one of those people that acts like their username, if that makes sense. With that said, the Mets are my favorite NL team, and Hernandez is probably one of the coolest ballplayers ever.
I decided to use this name for many reasons:
1 He just said something stupid as broadcaster for the Mets. It was a sexist remark that got him negative public reaction
2 This is the year the mets win it all.
3 Cocaine is a good drug
4 The Seinfeld episode he was in was on a couple days ago.
-
Is it wrong to have laughed at this one? Because I did laugh. A great bourbon-scented wheezing chortle with all the weight of a misspent youth upon it.
I had previously been of the opinion that Phillippe, having finally achieved his dream (however briefly) of becoming a cute and friendly despot, was indeed lost to the inky depths, his coffin a nonbiodegradable testament to one of the worst libations on god's grey earth. It all seemed rather heavy to me and was not really making the amusement.
Now the cat who wears a thong and sunglasses shows up flying Airwolf. The cat who decided last week that a helicopter might be a good idea but he wasn't really sure shows up flying Airwolf. This brings with it the most delicious probablilities, ranging from the classic Wacky Rescue Attempt to the flaming and horrible deaths of virtually the entire main cast of the comic strip.
But possibilites alone do not make for a hearty phlegm-clearing chuckle. No, that came at seeing the Head of Keith Moon's Delighted Expression. Truth in advertising on eBay? Funny!
-
jesus people what is Airwolf?
also: "mom! the dang ol' eyes closed!"
"ray, you know it said that would happen! don't complain now, young man."
"yes ma'am... *walks away* shucks."
-
Whether this is a way of ending the storyline ASAP, an excuse to branch out and draw things other than cars, or just normal happenings in the Acheniverse, I heartily approve.
I mean, you gotta love the box with " 3' " hiding in the lower corner of the last panel. There is no better deus ex machina than Keith Moon's head and the world's biggest laser.
-
Man oh man... lasers... it'll be all p'tou p'tou.
All scorched earth style.
-
Correct thread title. Thank you.
-
Correct thread title. Thank you.
Was there any other way?
I just noticed that Ray responds to Teodor's problem with awesome, just so he can show off his new toy.
-
where is Stringfellow Hawk? Did he not come with Airwolf? Ray should've at least gotten a cardboard cutout of him or something.
-
There is no part of this strip that is not perfect: the drawings of the ePR items, Ray's conversation with Teodor, the concept of watching a video in sixth grade just about the transfer station, the phrase "same-day Airwolf," all of it. This strip truly is THE BEST THING ONSTAD GOT. A++++ would read again.
-
Keith Moon's eyes have closed during shipping.
-
Ray is bringing no deus ex machina. Chris Onstad simply cannot control Ray's actions. This was meant to happen.
-
This is an unremarkable, yet quite funny and nicely put together strip. I mean, it's basically just Continuing Action taking us to an eventual anti-climax, but damn it, it's good rising action and that should count for something. It's not quite Hamlet waiting behind the curtain so he can overhear a salient plot point, but then again, Hamlet didn't have Airwolf, did he?
Also, I would like to mention to those that never saw Airwolf that it was a cheesy action tv show from the 1980s, akin to Knight Rider, and pretty much a ripoff of the Roy Scheider film "Blue Thunder" (Airwolf is basically the television version of Blue Thunder).
-
(http://home.earthlink.net/~superwombat/_uimages/janmichaelcorrupted.gif)
where is Stringfellow Hawk?
-
Who called this one? Me (I did).
I hate the Mets. Hate hate hate them.
--fan of the Nationals and Phillies (and yes they both suck)
-
It should be noted that there was also a Blue Thunder TV series, yet another short-lived Movie-to-TV adapation.
I used to watch Airwolf all the time, back in the day. Watching Jan Michael Vincent and Borgnine flit about in their mach speed capable heli-craft, every week trying to stop plots by madmen that could jump start WWIII or help people being pursued by foreign agents or going up against other would-be suped-up aircraft, plus that theme music, what more could you want. Asides from quality that is? Ha.
-
"Yes, I have a problem. A pretty bad problem, actually."
"Awesome."
-

I hate all 3. Well I hate baseball as a concept but I'm also firmly against team names that don't lend themselves to funny mascot suits. Explain to me how somebody dressed up as a "national" is better than say a "radioactive meatball" costume.
-
The Nationals' mascot is a fuzzy-headed eagle.
If it's funny mascots you want, how can you hate the Phillies or Mets? The Phanatic and Mr. Met are among the all-time greats.
-

What is a Philly and/or a Met? Without ever having scene either I'm going to guess that they're just guys with baseballs for heads. LAME! Or possibly the Met is a tiny art museum that wanders around the sidelines in which case I'll allow it.

We already have the Pittsburgh Pirates, all we need now are the Ninjas. Though I'm not sure what city they would play for. Maybe they would just play for America, because wherever they go, they are the home team.
We need a team called the #####s, too.

If we're going to have a team called the *****s, you just know we're going to need a team called The Monkeys.
If only they weren't already a fake band.

As highly as I thought of Onstad, my opinion of him has just increased immeasurably because of his depiction of Keith Moon's head in a jar. That is unquestionably what Keith Moon's head in jar would look like. Kudos, Onstad, kudos.
Also, I am a Cardinals fan. The Mets are pond scum.
-
As highly as I thought of Onstad, my opinion of him has just increased immeasurably because of his depiction of Keith Moon's head in a jar.
And half of Teodor's face looking back at it. And the idea of the video about the transfer station. I am so in love today. *giggle*
Also: I was briefly a Mets fan as a youngster but I officially don't give a f*ck anymore, so carry on.
-
"I have Airwolf" almost sounds like an admission of STD. The question, though, is what kind.
-
Highlights:
- "I'm not sure what you mean. I don't know if what you're saying means anything." (This pretty much sums up what it must be like to be friends and carry on a conversation with Ray.)
- "Nothing else I could say would make more sense given what I own and what I am doing at this moment."
- "A pretty bad problem, actually." / "Awesome."
- That Video in the Sixth Grade, because apparently the Transfer Station is bad enough that it needs its own warning video in the style of films about STDs and drugs and driving while intoxicated.
- Téodor's face as he reacts to the mighty FLUP-ing of Airwolf
- Keith Moon's delighted expression; this is what really sold the strip for me.
Thank you, Onstad, for today's free entertainment. I heartily approve.
-
"I have Airwolf" almost sounds like an admission of STD. The question, though, is what kind.
The only kind you are proud to have.
"DUDE SWEET I GOT AIRWOLF!"
"Fuckin AIRWOLF dude!"
That's also a rule, airwolf is an adjective now.
-

"No way man, don't tell me she did airwolf?!"
"Damn straight man.. airwolf was on till the break of dawn."
"Bro.. you are so lucky!"
Man.. that's like... I dunno.. Fraternity Brother Theatre or something.

On an unrelated note, did you last two guys come in together or is the baseball thing just co-incidental?
I have no connection with Keith previous to being a poster on this board recently... but early spring is when each of us seem to have joined and baseball starts then, so... its not such a reach that two Americans joining in the early spring might have baseball on their minds.
In my case, the Little Falls Mets were a minor league baseball team in the town I grew up in, in northern New York State... until they moved to Western MA when I was nine. They were the lowest level affiliate of the New York Mets, the team where Keith's namesake attained his greatest succees, so yeah, that's a little bit of a coincedence but not a huge one. Said namesake has been in the news lately, anyway, for commenting that he considered the San Diego club inappropriate for having one of their on-the-field doctors, such as working in the dugout and the lockerroom during play, being a woman.
My affection for my hometown's former team is more metaphoric than just sporting, however, as... you have to understand... there were 6,000 people where I grew up, it was kind of an Insane Idea to put a professional sports team (even in the lowest minors) in a town that small in history as late as the late 1970s. Towns of 50,000 were considered small for that level of baseball, even then, and thirty years later, towns of 100,000 are smallish for that. It's crazy that we had a pro ball team for two seconds, let alone eleven years, nine of which were the formative years of my life.
They were literally the only thing to do on summer nights, going to those games, and even the players sort of couldn't believe that they were actually playing there, in this little town where there were more cows than people... that these 18 or 19 year old kids from the Deep South or suburban Los Angeles, a year or two of playing a children's game away from being millionaires living in Manhattan skyscrapers, sleeping on piles of loose women and tightly-packed cocaine... were in this town for four months of the summer, whatever it meant.
It was a weird kind of magic, that something so Big City and Important could be happening in a place known primarily for cheese, paper mills and the majority of the population being on public assistance. It was Strictly Impossible but here it was, from middle of June to middle of September, we were Somewhere and Someones. Everyone has an aunt or an older sister that were so unbelievably impressed by the idea that they... uh... got to service these strange fellows who had a half a shot at being Rich Men and Gods.
And then, just as I was getting old enough to really understand how Weird and Amazing this situation was, a larger small town lost THEIR team and a rich man from there bought ours and moved it there... and in the middle of the night in the winter, the magic disappeared and our sense of being Important and Special disappeared like candy floss in a sunburst of rain. Like it had never been there at all, maybe we just imagined it.
Anyway, I didn't mean to write a book here, just saying, my screenname's origin is just sort of my personal symbolism for mouring the longshots and celebrating outrageous fortunes in life, it sorta... encapsulates the funny sadness of life to me, even as I live in Los Angeles trying to make it in entertainment (a longer shot than becoming a New York Met from being a Little Falls Met, that's for sure) with my little hoarde of baseball pennants and cards and pins and programmes, trying to remind myself that it Did Happen and so on, that Big Pointless Miracles can be just around the corner and et cetera.
As for baseball, the key is to imagine cricket...except awesome.
But you probably knew this. You're the Doc, Doc.
-
In my case, the Little Falls Mets were a minor league baseball team in the town I grew up in, in northern New York State... until they moved to Western MA when I was nine.
That must be Pittsfield. I went to a game there some years ago. Great little old ballpark.
-
As for baseball, the key is to imagine cricket...except awesome.
I am so full of rage with that statement! So here is one of my own:
As for baseball, the key is to imagine rounders... except modified for big, macho men so they don't feel embarrassed playing it. Also, made a lot more boring. (Admittedly, there is nothing much more boring than cricket.)
See also American football as compared to rugby.
I am not saying this simply out of moronic national pride. Honest.
Anyway, awesome comic. It... is a perfect Keith Moon's head. Astonishingly perfect. If it was up for sale, I'd rob a bank for it.

That must be Pittsfield. I went to a game there some years ago. Great little old ballpark.
Yep. And they pretty much only stayed there long enough for the Mets to build a ballpark in Brooklyn and move the team there. This is sort of an important thing to understand how crazy it was that we had a team. In the '80s, we were a town in a league where the towns were, like, 30-60,000... such as Utica and Watertown and St. Catherines, Ontario. The Mets moved to Pittsfield, a town in that range, and within a decade, they were moved to... Brooklyn, which has a million people.
It's a league now wherein the two "biggest" teams represent two bouroughs of New York f'in City. Albany, the state capital and a metro area of 400,000 people is now one of the "small" teams, so small that they don't even call it "Albany" they call it "Tri-Cities" for "Albany-Schenectady-Troy".
Still, here's the thing about being a New York Mets fan. In the Northeast, you can be a Yankees fan, a Mets fan or a Red Sox fan.
To be a Red Sox fan is to be a self-flagellant, enjoying the pain of almost always failing by just an inch... digging on it, making it your personality, the sick pride of always being stepped on and almost feeling betrayed by success because you're not so special anymore.
To be a Yankees fan is to be completely obsessed with being The Best, to the point of not caring to understand any of the minutae of anything, only caring that you're destroying everyone else and... when you're not... being bewildered by it, as though up was down and in was out, to the point where you're asking why God has forsaken you.
And then there's being a Mets fan. The Buddha's Middle Path. Mediocre, just enough to not quite be in the playoff race, most of the time... some of the games are exciting, some are awful, a few stars, a few goats, the whole range of the experience and... every once in a while, every five ten fifteen years, they get it together enough to be the Best or quite near it. And that's nice but you sort of have the full view of the experience because you've spent the last ten years dealing with the depth and breadth of the experience of being So-So.
It's a balanced healthy kinda fan experience.

also: you FOOL the Red Sox are the only team that matters in professional sports.
Ironically, I am a Red Sox fan. I feel I need to come clean. I am from the middle of the country, with the closest professional sports teams being the ones in Dallas. I hate Texas, so I had to pick my own teams. My dad is from Boston, so I have been a Red Sox fan for the last 20 years. However, one of my roommates is in the same situation, but his dad is from New York, and a Mets fan. Therefore, I watch a lot of Mets and Sox games. I have always dug the Sox, and still do. However, while still good, the team has a lot of lame players on it this year. I mean besides Varitek, Ortiz and Ramirez I really don't like anyone on their team. Well Coco is alright, but I hate Schilling and the new players they got from Florida. Their middle infield is lame as well. Plus, after they won the Series, alot of "fans" around my campus have been wearing Sox hats. Not cool.
Now, the Sox are still my team, but in the NL I am now a fairly new Mets fan (last two years). Reyes, Wright, Floyd and Delgado are all classic, and I will always love Pedro. I really like their minor league outfielder Diaz, who got in some games last year, and, really, the only player I don't like is Wagner. I guess I route for the Red Sox and a team from the NL with the coolest players. It just so happens that it is the Mets this year. RED SOX JUST SCORED ORTIZ RBI- Anyways, Keith Hernandez is one of the coolest first basemen ever, and I played 1st base in high school. Plus, liking the Mets goes along with another thing I hold true, hating the yankees.
As previously mentioned, Hernandez saw a woman who is like the team masseuse in the dug out. He then said:
"Who is the girl in the dugout, with the long hair? What's going on here? You have got to be kidding me. Only player personnel in the dugout." After Hernandez was informed later in the broadcast that Calabrese was a club employee, he maintained his position, stating "I won't say that women belong in the kitchen, but they don't belong in the dugout."
He then apologized by saying:
"You know I am only teasing. I love you gals out there — always have."
Hernandez was also a cocaine user and a chain smoker. He smoked two and a half packs of cigarettes during game 6 of the 1986 NLCS (where my signature comes from). I am also a chain smoker, and have had a past with the white, so it makes me like him more I guess. He also does broadcasting for the mets nerwork (where those quotes above came from) and always talks about getting drunk and whatnot.
Classy guy.

Should we retitle this thread "Why Little Falls Mets loves the Mets?"
Can we, can we????
-
oh, geez.
I actually know nothing about Baseball.
I've just grown up with a family of diehard redsox fans.
-
The Red Sox are fine by me, I love watching them beat the Yankees, I just think being a Red Sox fan would be too painful... I root for them unless they're playing my Mets. As a Mets fan, I am preprogrammed to hate the Yankees and the Braves and there's really no one else that's hated, not even the Phillies or the Marlins or etc. When the Yankees played the Braves in the World Series, however, all I could really root for was an earthquake of some kind.
My apologies for kinda hijacking the thread, however. I was asked and answered but... I can be superlongwinded at times. Mea culpa.

If you switched Red Sox with Mets those are my feelings exactly. I hate the Braves as well, because all of the rednecks here like them. I also kind of hate the Phillies, just because of the early 90's teams.

Once in awhile during Met games, Keith will give his advice on hitting as if he is Ted Williams. Is good.

It appears that foreigners believe that baseball is a lot like watching Matt Damon play poker.
Which, actually, wouldn't be such a bad idea. Any sport would be improved by the possibility of a half-naked Minnie Driver barging into the situation, screaming like a loon.

I was reading the thread from friday, and didn't realize you were the one that called out that Vonnegut quote.
Do you play bass as well? Are you my twin?
Sorry if this is off topic, or bad to say.

NOTE: I will always have a soft spot for the Mets 'cause they were stupid enough to draft me in Piazza-territory and I was stupid enough to sign.
It was a nice summer/fall in rookie league, once the mosquitos and booming gopher pitches were erased from memory.
Of course, if I had made it up with that era's high flying Mets I'd look like Keith Moon's head now, I'm certain.
That's awesome. You got a decent signing bonus though, right?
-
Of course, if I had made it up with that era's high flying Mets I'd look like Keith Moon's head now, I'm certain.
Yeah, yeah. We all wish we looked like Keith Moon's head now.

At this level, the market demands non-linear value.

My dad is from Boston, so I have been a Red Sox fan for the last 20 years.
So you become a fan of the Red Sox the year they were embarrassed unforgivably by the Mets, then several years later become a Mets fan, while remaining a Red Sox fan? There's something weird going on here. But, you're a Mets fan, so you're OK.
I'm a Mets fan, and will be going to Shea Stadium to see the Mets play for the first time ever on August 19th. I can't wait.
I'm also a Mariners fan. So, like you, I have double the reason to hate the Yankees.
Anyway, I'm not troubled by the quickness of the shipping, but how did Ray pay for all this stuff? You can't possibly paypal $27,300,000. I bet he has an American Express black card.
-
I would concur, though, that I would be hell of interested in the story of your year in pro baseball... though, of course, I'm still new enough here to not quite know if going that far afield of On-Topic would be kosher or not.
I've never known anyone who actually got some time in where they were paid to play ball, even the practically-a-stipend you got in Rookie Ball. Kinda like how I'm not gonna call myself A Writer until someone pays me, until then I'm just an f'n hobbyist, you know? Let alone as a ballplayer... closest I'd ever get to pro ball would'a been people paying to laugh at me, embarassing myself in the Sherman Oaks batting cages.
A 6'6 320 pound man taking the slow pitch in on the fists over and over again because he has no coordination is The Saddest Thing.

You see, if you or I put 'WHAT'S THE BEST THING YOU GOT' into Paypal it wouldn't really do us anygood. But they already knew Ray was a multimilionaire based on earlier purchases (i.e. John Lennon's Rickenbacker) so they unlocked that option for him. All he had to do is find it. Ray saying "non-trivial" as though he had just heard the word on a law-advice radio show and decided to try and use it at least once that day is... one of those little ways where the distinct dialogue for these characters is so good. It's not a lot of comic strips where you can tell when a character using slightly out-of-character phrasings means that they're trying to sound different that day and not a sloppiness in that day's writing.
In spoken words, you can so clearly denote that through tone that... like... it's almost over-the-top to do so... but to do it in bare text with no signifiers, that's something else entirely. No smilies needed, you know?
-

I am not a true Mets fan, they just have hell of cool players, so I like them now. I may be becoming more of a Mets fan than a Sox fan slowly though, which scares me.
