Title: Slither
Post by: robot_god on August 14, 2006, 08:02:14 pm
You might have seen the commercial for this movie with the slugs crawling into some girl's tub:  it looked like another one of those real PG-13-teen-movie-Ring-knock-offs that are released monthly.  Naturally, this is what I figured and I did not see it when it was released.

The marketing for the movie was all wrong.  Anyway, last night I saw it, and hot damn.  It was no joke.  It was a serious, straight up, classic style horror movie.  Little bit Invastion of Body Snatchers, little bit Alien, some zombies.  Best movie I've seen this year, probably on the list of top 5 horror movies of all time.  Don't worry, none of that teen-movie-thriller-shit, just straight up A+ horror.

If you've ever enjoyed any zombie movie in any way, this movie is a MUST see.  It's got it all, I ain't kiddin' ya.  MUST see.

If you like any form of film, it is a MUST see.

I saw this when it came out, and indeed, it is horror done right. Bit 50's, bit 80's B movies, plus funny. And Gunn even manages to pull off why the romance aspect to the film works. I was really quite impressed, and is definitely something I want to see again some time soon.

Definitely add to the recommendation.

Oh, also interesting, adult characters, which is so unbelievably fuck*ng rare for modern horror movies.
Onstad can pimp that Eli Roth guy and his Cabin Fever movie for all he wants, but that guy shot himself in the foot when he made Hostel which was purely a gratuitous waste of time. Horror without a point (as far as I'm concerned, I guess I must concede) is not worth the film it's printed on, I'm sorry. Just cause he came up with a plot does not mean it did anything but what it said on the box. By contrast, Slither, while maybe not scary in the same way, has so much more going for it... I've sat down with a number of people who are into film and had intelligent discussions about the construction of a movie based on having watched Slither. It works. Even if you don't like it, it would be difficult to argue that it is not a very well made film. Everything has a purpose, even the stuff I thought he was going to forget about.

I say this, as I actually went and saw Lady in the Water the other night, and oh my word. What I just said about films working... Not the case there. It was a self-aggrandising, pretentious, wandering, futile, laughable piece of crap. Or so we, and the movie critic I respect thought. (And just watch for what he does to the movie critic who otherwise plays no role in the whole film... For fucks sake man, really!)

I guess I'm done... I ought not go on much more about Shayamalamalamalamalamalan.
*grin*

Well, yes. I hasten to add I didn't really want to go see it, but there was nothing else on and other people wanted to for shits 'n' giggles. We left the theatre laughing rather hard.

I read that as in ***** Chicken. Which I saw yesterday. Timing...
Although Shamaloomylimalam appears to like to call them... *cough* paradigm shifts *ahem*. Dear god.

It was fully intended as such (fun fact: took me a full week to realise what dance the aliens were doing and why that was the real punchline)

Although Shamaloomylimalam appears to like to call them... *cough* paradigm shifts *ahem*. Dear god.
damn, he really is as pretentious as people like to make out isn't he?

Shamalamadingdong.  He sucks and I hate every one of his movies.  You see, in my younger and more vulnerable years, I was in the CD store and I couldn't decide on something to buy.  There was a sale rack for Unbreakable, and it had very attractive packaging.  I bought it on blind faith for $22.99 and I have regretted the decision to this very day.

I contemplated seeing Slither, but the advert said it was by the same people for did the Dawn of the Dead remake, and since I hate their f-ing guts (for doing such a crap re-make) I decided against it.

But if it's as good as you say it is, and has the good plot-line etc. I'll give it a try.  Especially if it's got the 80's style, because I love 80's zombie/horror flicks.

It's by the guy who wrote the screenplay for it, but it was his feature debut as a director. The whole 'from the people who brought you' can quite often mean only the producers, so I tend to not pay too much attention to that.
As for remaking Dawn of the Dead... Whhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhy? I could certainly quite happily bitch at him for writing the screenplay, but maybe he had hopes for it. Or maybe he's just really a big schill...

If he had hopes for it, they were lost in the running zombies, newborn zombies, and all the other non-sensical bs.  Also, where'd the political commentary go?  That too was a dissapointment.

But anyways, there are some of my gripes with the remake (also, the remake of NoTLD sucked big time too).  I'll put Slither at the top of my 'To See' list.

I tolerated the Dawn remake.  It tried a few new ideas, I ain't bitter 'bout that.

Oh, let's argue again about how everyone on the board but me hates this movie.  I know we've done it before, but apparently we have nothing else to talk about right now.  I mean is everyone on vacation or what?

Although, you know, I used to be a sucker for the 'imagine there are really werewolves/zombies/superheroes leading normal lives among us' idea.  But is it just me, or is every other movie this summer some kind of dopey superhero thing?  Way to ruin a good theme, guys.

But of course, I meant everyone except August who is a person of exceptional taste and discernment.  And is fortunately not on vacation or else if he is, has a computer with him.

I'm sure I said last time, but I liked the *splutter* paradigm shift *hack*. I just didn't feel the preceding couple of hours was worth it for that, as it was kinda, boring...

See, now, I can hardly sit through a movie most of the time, but I didn't find that one boring.  But boring is in the mind of the beholder, you can't argue about it.

In other movie news, who's going to go see Snakes on a Plane and report back for us?  I feel like I ought to see it, being someone who works with snakes in the basement and all.  But I am not going to be first.

Nope.  A pregnant woman is bit by a zombie, she dies but the child is born.  It's a zombie and it's all squeelin at everyone then they shoot it.  That was some grade-A BS right there, I don't know what the hell they were thinking.

I sort of want to see Snakes on a Plane, but I can't actually work up the energy to care about it enough to go to a theater and pay money for it. I mean, hasn't the Internet already oversaturated us on this damn thing? How can the real movie possibly compare? Anyway, someone bite the bullet and see it for us, so we know.

I am going to stand outside the theater and throw buckets of paint onto patrons whom buy tickets for that film.

, black paint to reflect the tarnished souls of these formerly sentient beings made slaves by the most heinous marketing rape since Y2K.

Yea, I can't quite tell how I feel about SoaP. Only that I guess, I'm already over it. The hype kind of fulfilled what little humour I think I was going to garner from it, and thus I can't bring myself to go and see it now. I'm sure I'll see it when it's considered uncool.
Could go see Snakes on a Train instead... Only saying that will probably have thigns thrown at me.

I liked unbreakable too. I read a script for it on script-o-rama a while back that had a slightly altered ending that I liked more (same twist but it didn't freeze and scroll text, in fact it wasn't explicit that Sam Jackson's character was brought to justice at all).

I'm going to see SoaP. Maybe I haven't been qutie as saturated as some of you or maybe I'm just willing to put up with more but I'm just interested to see what it will be like, since most people are obviously counting on it falling into the 'hilariously bad' category.

See, the SO and I were talking about movies last night while enjoying some Veggie Korma, and he was upset about how shitty movies are these days and saying they need to make more movies like The Tingler.  I got pretty excited by the idea, specifically in regard to SoaP - it's perfect: springy snakes in every second package of M&M's sold, Spring snakes in the cup holders, a rig that dumps snakes from the ceiling.. Then, it must have been the curry, we were both really excited about the idea of just bringing bags full of rubber snakes to the theatre and throwing them.  That would be awesome.  But no one has a sense of humour any more, and I don't want to be "that girl who got kicked out for throwing rubber snakes," or, more specifically, I don't want to be "that girl who spent $8 plus the cost of rubber snakes just to be kicked out."

FYI, "I've had it with these mother fuck*ng snakes on this mother fuck*ng plane!" is a good line to use in day to day life.  Just substitute "snakes" with whatever's irking you.  It does a body good.

Also...I'm sorry for encouraging the off topicness, since I haven't seen Slither.  I hate to say it, but shouldn't the SoaP discussion be split to it's own thread?  I'm leaving it up to you folks here.

I figured there was only so far the Slither discussion could go, what with the... three of us(?) who've seen it, and it could kind of be about how good Slither is compared to all these other shitty movies... Just my modly two cents.
(Plus it's gotten kind of tricky to split.)

Fine with me, and besides, really, so few of us actually lack the dignity to actually create a SoaP thread, and there's probably not that much to say about it either.

Well, I came back seeing as you found quite a bit.
I mean, I can't see why you'd get thrown out of a cinema for throwing rubber snakes. I've heard of worse. Not like it could be considered a terrorist threat to throw snakes during SoaMFP, surely? Too meta...
I'd do it now, were I going to go see it.

Well, snakes slither more than slugs do, don't they?  So the thread title makes as much sense for either one.

Perhaps this is the moment to confess that while I am not sure I want to see the movie, I do have Jeff Rowland's tshirt (http://topatoco.com/snakes.htm) inspired by it.  I got it because I meant to wear it to work, but then I decided it was too nice to risk getting snake poop on it.
