Title: 11 Sep 2006 - Ich habe gesellschaft (I have society)

I really like the idea of Teodor blowing his brains out onto a monument of himself and then laughing about it, and then probably going to listen to Arcade Fire.

I guess Onstad ran out of ways to torment Philippe so he's been picking on his second favorite whipping boy Teodor.

Funny strange.

I love this! Teodor's statue has a vaguely Cabaret Emcee feeling about it though.

According to Babelgiraffe, Teodor is saying "Dogs do not like fruit... dogs may [bumsen] and sleep!"
Paralink gives the last part as "Dogs may thump and sleep!" while FreeTranslation.com says "Dogs like to bang and sleep!"
Suspicious, I asked Urban Dictionary and odge.info what "bumsen" means. And yes, it's a slang term for sex.

I once had a dog who liked fruit... she was spayed, though, so that might explain it.

Edit: I hate to ask, but it looks like someone either doesn't like me or likes me enough to have somehow found out I don't drink Dr. Pepper. Nothing bad happens due to lack of tiny cans, does it?

No, but I remeber the thread that is the reason why this is happening.  I believe you said something bad about Pat's cock or something.

The visual reference for Teodor's statue is this album cover by the 70's avant-garde singer Klaus Nomi:

It is not impressive that I know this. I am only aware of Nomi because I'm the type of Morrissey fan who owns his Under the Influence compilation CD, which is to say, the type of Morrissey fan who is going to hell.

dict.leo.org (http://dict.leo.org) is the place to get German words translated. Bumsen comes out as about ten different earthy synonyms for copulation.

I guess this strip isn't aimed at the German audience. Otherwise... 'Dogs don't like fruit' should be 'Hunde mögen KEIN Frucht' ...

and Löwenbräu is a pallid mass-product that no self-respecting Thuringian would drink.

Try Köstritzer Schwarzbier: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/648/1774 (http://beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/648/1774)

I was all set to not like this strip until issacs_law pointed out the Klaus Nomi reference.  Old friend of mine was a Bowie completist and bought the Nomi albums because at one point Bowie worked with him.

It's been 24 years since I heard it, but from what I remember... kind of industrial 80s pop songs with this totally bizarre-looking flamboyant German guy launching into an all-out totally operatic soprano falsetto at full lung, sung in English with a gruff German accent.  Most people ran screaming for the volume knob.

Despite your protest, that was a remarkable catch issacs!

As I have said before (it is a recurring theme), I am always pleased by the unexpected reappearance of one of these recurring themes.

The little "OH, JA!" in the last panel was the best part.

I noticed that in the third panel, Téodor is making the same face as he does in this (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=01192004) strip.

For maximum points, Teodor needs to do that "Hor hor hor hor hor!" laugh. I'd make a voice clip but that would be overstating the point.

This strip made me laugh, not particularly on it's own merit but by bringing back the image of Deutsch Ray's reflection saying "Nein". Damn, it's hilarious. Here. (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=04292003)

If your cans stay negative for more than 90 days your account is deleted and you owe the board the amount of cans of Dr Pepper that you're in the red for.

Also, I threw you some cans due to your scholarship on today's strip.

Keep it up and you'll have spendin' cans in no time.

I'm a pretty big Morrissey fan, but I didn't get the visual reference.  Good on you.

So what you are saying basically is Nomi makes you appreciate the good work that Yoko Ono did in the 60's.

I looked up Gesellschaft and I came up with over a dozen meanings. From "association" to "body" to "enterprise" and so on. Could Ray be saying "I own property" on the first panel?
Also, I was expecting him to return in the end of the strip saying Now's the time in Sprockets when we DANCE!"

EDIT: Just after posting I realized that the Gesellschaft line was the thread title. Translaten-fün included. Who's stupid? Me (I am).

So, after watching that video, I have to ask...

Is Klaus Nomi related to the bots?

Note the gloves, and the rounded box chest.  Perhaps Klaus was created in the bots image.

Anyone notice the alt text (or whatever you'd call the comments in the bubble over the cartoon) changed to a Klaus Nomi recommendation/reference?  Earlier it said 'click for translatenfun' or something similar.

(Yes I read the strip several times a day at present.. it helps keep me sane at work)

You got a problem with countertenors, buster?  Some of my best friends are countertenors.

Well actually... I do have a couple problems with them.
Firstly, some of them are just plain awfull, but people just accept that "that's what a countertenor sounds like". There is no reason to sound like a cat being strangled, no matter what type of voice you sing in. Good countertenors proove this.
Secondly, and more importantly, they've more or less hoaxed the whole opera audience into thinking they're good replacements for castrati. Castrati were boys castrated before puberty so that their voices didn't drop when they became adults, countertenor's are men who's voices did drop, but choose to sing in falsetto ( our beloved Klaus Nomi being an example ). Now put that way, you'd think most people would get that these are not the same thing, but nowdays all the old castrati parts are automatically given to countertenors. Women's voices are much, much closer to castrati voices than countertenors. The vocal chords are the same, the castrati just had more powerfull lungs to perform the vocal stunts they did. Sure, they're male roles, but castrati looked like women minus a few features and taller. So give women the roles! Besides, everyone loves lesbians.
I should say that I do like some countertenors, and many have nice voices. Like this guy. (http://www.tp4.rub.de/~ak/jw/ombra.mp3)

I was wondering about that, I thought my memory was playing tricks on me.

Well, some sopranos make me want to stick rusty nails in my eyes if it would make them stop singing.  But you can't go blaming them all for that.

Anyway, my countertenors sing music from before opera was invented.  So we do not have to have a fight about this.

Back on topic:  People, don't you think it's supposed to be pidgin German that isn't quite grammatical and doesn't entirely make sense?  Beating your head against what it really means spoils the joke.

Apparently the most common excuse given by the parents was that their son was "attacked by a boar". Considering that at the height of the castrati's popularity 4,000 - 5,000 boys were put to the knife each year, I'm suprised kids didn't develop an instense fear of pigs

P.S.  I should add that the excuse given by The Church was that women shouldn't be allowed to sing in the church, thus, if there just happen to be some male sopranos around, they'd have to have them sing in the choir. A case of the left hand not acknowledging what the right hand is doing...

Hah! I spewed my cola at that ( and that's no hyperbole: I've just finished wiping it off the monitor ).
Actually I'm never quite sure how one seperates the church ( as in catholicism ), from the church ( building down the road ) in terms of capitalisation. Perhaps I should just say the Catholic Church.

Anyway, you seem to know a lot about this castrati thing. A lot.

Have you thought of a career in opera, young man?
