But I want to put some new music on it aswell as the stuff I already knew about....
Any suggestions?
-
I just got a new second generation iPod nano (http://flickr.com/photos/jough/sets/72157594290076533/) (8Gb in incredibly sexy black) today too and am having fun adding an extra 4Gb of music to it.
What kind of music do you like?
We already have a number of music recommendation threads going...
-
I reccomend Satie's Vexations. (http://musicweb.hmt-hannover.de/satie/)
-
Well, of course, you'll need the bare essentials, those being Brand X - Moroccan Roll, Horace Silver - The Jody Grind, and Coltrane's A Love Supreme.
-
I usually tend to lean more towards a lot of indie stuff and folk.
I did look at those threads but I'll go back and look them over again to see if I missed anything.
-
Rautakoura (http://kotisivu.mtv3.fi/rautakoura/legenda/rautakoura-matkalla-etelaan.mp3) - Finnish bluegrass.
Crooked Still (http://www.myspace.com/crookedstill) - Bluegrass alt. folk band from Boston. With a voice that makes my knees weak.
Bellowhead (http://www.myspace.com/thisisbellowhead) - English folk, though very contemporary (I can't stand English folk, these guys are very much a first for me).
Jon Boden (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=48110979) - The above guys solo project, very Tom Waits... Never a bad thing.
Luminescent Orchestrii (http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=5914662) - Romanian Gypsy Punk (very folk).
I don't really know Indie... But the above I reckon are well worth a look.
-
I don't know where you're starting from so some of thse might be horribly obvious.
Mary Prankster - I recommend her to anybody at any time.
The Soviettes - fun punk
Mike Doughty - 27 Jennifers might possibly be one of the best songs ever
Spoon - Gimme fiction was one of '05's best
Kelly Bell Band - blues rock
The Weakerthans - full of Canadian goodness + a song written to the singer from his cat
Architecture in Helsinki - Wombat believes this band doesn't exist and we made them up
Adam Brodsky - anti-folk
The Boy Least Likely To - full of British goodness + a song about Panda Colo. Warm Panda Cola
-
I'll not assume anything and just suggest some bands and you can tell me if I'm close. If you like any of these I know other bands you've never heard of that you'll probably like:
Belle & Sebastian
Blur
Elastica
Oasis (fuck you, they're good)
Pulp
Travis
Radiohead
Spoon
My Bloody Valentine
Fugazi (most indie band ever)
-
Oh, and what ipod did you get?
-
I recommend as much Merle Travis as you can get your hands on.
Also, Burnt Weeny Sandwich.
-
Six Organs of Admittance - The Sun Awakens. Indie and folk, two great tastes that...well, you'll probably like it anyway.
-
Mr. *****o

I got the 30gb.

Also, thank you to everyone who is suggesting artists. I love getting new music. =)
-
I'm suddenly all turned onto baby gramps but suspect he's an aquired taste. Possibly aquired after concussion and heavy medication.
I also have a constant love on for barenaked ladies, but perhaps that is too mainstream for your tastes?
-
built to spill-- any of it. keep it like a secret and perfect from now on are my favs.
woody guthrie-- if you're into folk, you have probably already heard him, of course. but, you know, he's awesome. and I'm just listening to him.
Buck Owens is f-ing awesome.
mission of burma-- Vs.
um... R.E.M.--Murmur
pixies-- doolittle or surfer rosa
I suggest the following to everyone: The Talk, Elevator Action, The Sammies. all from Charlotte, NC, all awesome.
If you hear The Sammies on a college radio station, there's a pretty good chance I cut out the front sleeve of the promo CD. or put the label on the CD itself.
oh, also, this fellow named "RJD2" is coming to play here on wednesday. and I know that I should like him. right? guys?
-
Early R.E.M. is a definite winner -- Fables of the Reconstruction and Life's Rich Pageant come to mind. Sufjan Stevens is also a must-have, although you're probably well aware of him.
-
Lush "Spooky" (or anything, really)
The Sea and Cake
Mazzy Star "So Tonight That I Might See" or "Among My Swan"
The Innocence Mission "Glow"
Morphine "Cure for Pain"
Ani DiFranco (anything)
The Church "Stargiraffe"
The Magnetic Fields "69 Love Songs"
The Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin"
Jeff Buckley "Grace"
The Jayhawks "Tomorrow the Green Grass" (alt-country, yes, but heavier on the "alt")
The Lemonheads "Come On Feel" (fuck you, it's brilliant)
Liz Phair "Exile in Guyville" (and then nothing else after that)
PJ Harvey "Dry" or "Rid of Me"
Snow Patrol "Final Straw"
Whale "We Care" and "All Disco Dance Must End in Broken Bones"
James "Laid" (ignore the title track and just play "Sometimes" a few dozen times in a row)
Violent Femmes "Why Do Birds Sing?"
Carla Bruni "Quelqu'un M'a Dit" (yes, it's in French - and it's fuck*ng great)
Stereo Total (the French Smiths)
Colin Hay "Man At Work"
-
did you...
Ani Difranco?
wow. she is one of those people that... the first time I heard one of her songs, I established an entire set of associations and assumptions. until this moment, every single fuck*ng one of them has been true.
it is a sign of my respect for you that half of me is thinking "what have I missed about Ani?"
-
The Pogues, if you're into folkier stuff. They are the single best goddamn band on the goddamn planet.
If I recommend anything else, it's just going to detract from the Pogues. But seriously, get yourself a copy of Rum, Sodomy & the Lash and you won't regret it.
-
if the titleRum, Sodomy, and the Lash doesn't bring Q back, nothing will.
also: I realize that I used the Oxford (Oxonian?) comma where they did not. but... the Oxford comma is important to me.
I quizzed my girlfriend on whether she used it or not. I am not proud of this.
-
I can't be having with those Oxford commas. Wasteful is what it is. Why mince around with such a thing when there's a perfectly good 'and' there already? You are a young man full of learning an Sin master Inevitable and no good shall come of it.
-
Yea, I rate RJD2. Haven't listened to him in a long while. Also worth checking out is the only nerdcore I like, Jesse Dangerously.
But I'm here to tell y'all that if you don't like The Cat Empire (http://www.myspace.com/thecatempire) there is clearly something wrong with you!
-
Luscious Jackson - Fever In Fever Out. Or at minimum aquire the song Naked Eye if you're too lazy to get the whole album.
-
All the kewl kids are listening to podcasts these days. I recommend KEXP's Music That Matters.
http://www.kexp.org/podcasting/podcasting.asp

Or you could go to this list of lists (http://www.emusic.com/features/editorial/dozens.html) and start poking around.

After years of absolutely hating the ipod, I think I kind of like the new 8gb nano. I mean flash and about as thick as three credit cards, what's not to love? I still think Creative just works better, has a nicer sound, has a much nicer userface on the player, and is easier to use. However, that nano is looking really tempting. Hopefully Zune will be awesome and they can come out with something like it soon. Oh well, enjoy your ipods.
Plus, just so you know, some of the main reasons I hate the ipod have nothing to do with it. I think Jobs is a hypocritical douche and I think the fact that Apple prints "Designed in California, Made in (Insert favorite 3rd world Asian country here)" on all of there products is completely ridiculous. I still think the Creative line is all around better though, although I am willing to admit I may see negatives in the ipod I may not look for in other product.
-
Hopefully Zune will be awesome and they can come out with something like it soon.
Can I laugh uncontrollably?
Microsoft have destroyed the Zune already. Not only does Zune mean something like 'bullshit' in Arabic, I forget what in particular, but it is DRM'd to hell and back. Not only would you apparently have to repurchase any music you have already bought from MS (that's right, music which is now yours), but to save on some problems they were having, they will now just DRM everything you put on the player. Meaning, if you put a Creative Commons copywritten file onto your player, you will be breaking the law. Not MS, but you!
Xbox 360... fine. Vista... bring it on. Zune... appears to just make them fucktards.
-
Not only would you apparently have to repurchase any music you have already bought from MS (that's right, music which is now yours)
That really is insane. They bring out Play4Sure (or some equally dumbass name) for all the other companies then suddenly put out their own player that doesn't support it. Why could MS possibly want to do this since this will only splinter the non-iPod market even further? Although since I don't buy DRM'd music I don't really care what store affiliation my player has.
-
I still think Creative just works better
I have a Zen Micro, my wife has a 3rd gen ipod, and my stepdaughter has an ipod mini. Let me tell you, I disagree with your assessment. For a long time I had a problem where my micro would freeze on startup 50% of the time. Then the media organizer wouldn't recognize it when it was attached to my computer. Eventually I installed the latest PlaysForSure firmware, suspecting all along the involving Windows Media Player would muck things up. Yep. My computer now recognizes the thing just fine, but if I drag and drop files onto it, they are often ordered alphabetically on the player despite the fact that the id3 tags correctly identify the tracklisting. Instead, I have to make a playlist in Windows Media Player, then set it up to synch, and even then it orders them correctly no more than 80% of the time. The ipods, while not perfect, seem a lot more intuitive, useable, and reliable.
-
Hey, I'm using a red handled screwdriver!
Hey, I'm using a blue handled screwdriver!
-
Although since I don't buy DRM'd music I don't really care what store affiliation my player has.
The problem there being, with the Zune, as I mentioned, that if you try to put any files on it, it will DRM them itself. At which point you can be breaking the law so many times, and well... I don't exactly want to be made to break the law by anyone. I have no real problem breaking it myself, but to be made to just seems really fucked up.
I assume from the way they're talking that you can't even bypass this and just drop files on it. I mean, with the iPod you can install rockbox and use it like any iRiver or whatever, just dropping on what files you want and playing them (though in even more formats, which seems a plus to me), but with say, the new Sony Walkman mp3 players, you have to convert everything to ATRAC to play them. You can put what you like on them as an external storage device, but to be able to play it you have to spend twenty minutes re-encoding everything to a useless audio format. As I say, I assume from the sounds of it, this is the kind of thing the Zune will be demanding you do.
-
Hey, I'm using a red handled screwdriver!
Hey, I'm using a blue handled screwdriver!
Except in this case I'm arguing against the one I use. It's more like "Hey, I'm using the right sized screwdriver." vs. "Hey, this screwdriver kind of works, but it also kind of strips the screw and both of these screwdrivers are pretty expensive."
-

Actually this turned out to be a rumor, the zune doesn't do this. Still not replacing the white plastic God in my heart though.

OK, seems to be the case. But, the whole three day-three play does seem rather the Microsoft solution. iRiver have never interfered with the way I use my mp3 player, and for that I'm so very grateful (that includes dual booting firmware, as well as playing ogg, mp4, mp3, atrac, flac and the likes).

http://rockbox.org
Looks promising for alternate firmware, although I'm not sure I'm willing to risk my iPod to run it.

It's what I tend to run on my iRiver now. It's pretty sweet. Does offer a wider range of supported codecs, better UI (including choices of theme and various settings), as well as some other handy options. It also doesn't brick iRivers which is quite nice, though I do believe it can be possible to do so on iPods.
-
Sorry, slink, I am unaware of the transitive verb, "to brick."
-
To update or alter the firmware on any given electronic device (ipod, psp etc.) and effectively make it as useful as a brick.
-
My favourite indie-ish album of the moment would be "Yellow House" from Grizzly Bear... nice stuff.

I still burn CDs and play them in the car and on a stereo.
They work until I scratch them up bad!
-
I still have a cassette tape player in my car!
Although I admit that this was sort of a mistake.
-
my car has a cassette tape player. I rarely use it, though.
I mostly listened to music on burned CDs until very recently. ie, the point when I stopped having a car. Now most of my listening happens on my computer.
I am re-reading Our Band Could Be Your Life for the billionth time. So it is mostly Dinosaur Jr. and Mudhoney and the like.
Somehow, when I had to reinstall windows, random tracks disappeared from my computer. I had all of my music on a separate hard drive, so this does not make sense. But, for instance, half of 13 songs is missing. Luckily, I own the CD, so I can re-import.
My iPod hasn't worked in Ages. But every time I decide to take it to the store, it starts working again.
-
Just to make clear, I do not think the Zune will be that good. I just HOPE the Zune will be good. Probably not since it is just a modified gigabeat right now, but I just want some company besides ipod to come out with a small, large capacity flash player.
Also, DRM is retarded, I stay as far away from that as I can. If it is true that microsoft is doing that, there is no way I would ever buy that. I am just saying, maybe microsoft are the only ones with enough cash to make a player that can compare to a 8gb nano.
-
Yay! I got an iPod nano for my birthday! Guess what? My computer's so fuckin' old that I can't even charge the iPod off it. I have to charge it at work! I got an iPod, and for a full day all I could do was just hold it and think about how small it is. I could barely sleep because I couldn't wait to get to work to charge it up. Also, I put it in my purse, it slid between the pages of a pack of post it notes, and I was briefly terrified that I'd already lost it.
This is the first piece of technology that I've gotten since my computer, which is almost 10 yrs old now. I'd been using a CD walkman so old it makes weird chugging noises when it starts up playing a CD.
You've got to hand it to the iPod people. They made something so user friendly that a girl who didn't even know the difference between a mega bite and a gig was two days ago (me) was able to listen to her favorite music while walking to work today.
It's been loads of fun going through all my old CD's, and I look forward to downloading some of the music I lost the last time my computer crashed.
It's a very special time for me. Yay iPod!
-
Smells - I bought a USB2 hub for $20 that has its own power source. I use it to charge my handheld devices and my PC doesn't even have to be on.
Of course, if your 10 year old computer doesn't have a USB port, that may not matter. But you can at least charge your iPod at home.
-
Didn't it come with a wall charger? They used to come with headphones, dock, nylon case w/ belt clip, wired remote, firewire cable, and a wall charger.
No wait, let me guess. They've cheaped out and now all you get is the headphones and firewire?
-
I got mine last Christmas. No wall charger.
~Paul
-
my computer is almost brand new.
and yet,
my ipod will not charge from it. I have to charge it by plugging it into the wall. what the heck.
also, it has stopped working. the screen is blank at all times. so, oh well.
-
Firewire? Cort, come join us in 2006. All iPods are USB-only now.
They stopped including the wired remote with the 2G iPod, but you can buy one separately for most other 'pods.
No case either.
Of course, the 30Gb iPod with video is HALF the price of the original 5Gb iPod, so you can buy your own accessories for less than you'd have paid for an iPod of olde.
-
Oh, I forgot also - instead of buying a $20 USB2 hub to not only charge your iPod but also plug in additional devices, you could instead by a $19 wall charger for just the iPod. The advantage to the wall charger is that you can travel with it easily.
-

Well that's messed up. The directions for my 3G specifically say that it cannot be charged with the USB cable, even from a powered USB port. And Apple has been pushing Firewire as better than USB (especially for video) since 2000. I wonder why the about-face now. Did they also change the wall charger? Because it has a firewire port in the back of it.
The other advantage of the wall charger that Jough didn't mention is that you can buy just one wall charger and get like 10 international adapters (http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wo/1.RSLID?mco=47FFCC51&nplm=M8794G%2FB) that snap in and out which might be useful if anybody was going to say, Indonesia.
Oh, and according to iLounge (formerly iPodLounge, thanks a lot, Apple lawyers) you get a bigger charge with the wall charger than you do when it's connected to a computer.
-
Yes, the wall charger now only has a USB port in the back of it.
You get the same charge with the charger as when it's connected to a PC - the iPod doesn't know but it takes a little longer with the USB charge, which probably doesn't matter if you charge it while you sleep (and sleep more than four hours a night).
Cort, most of the new Mac computers don't have Firewire ports either. Apple lost that fight, and gave up.
Ash: what kind of PDA did spousal unit procure?

Oooh, it comes with international adapters? See 'cause at first I was like "yay! It charges through computers! I wont need to bring a bunch of extra stuff to charge it with!" then I was like "Oh fuck it won't charge through my USB port!" Now I'm like "oh fuck - does this mean I need to buy the iPod wall adapter for my iPod and a universal adapter for the digital camera I'm bringing with me?" Remember when everything ran on AA batteries? That made travel really easy. Sigh.
Yeah... how the hell am I going to keep this thing charged while traveling internationally? ... I mean, how do you charge something at an airport? Are there just... electrical outlets around that one can take advantage of? I've got a 7hr stop over in L.A. on the way out, and the flight between L.A. and Kuala Lumpur is 20 hr 40 min (yeah I know-ouch!) so at some point in the air my battery will probably die. And I've got a 12 hr stop over in Kuala Lumpur, and a 5hr stop over in LAX on the way home. Shit. I'll have to ask my travel agent about this. I'm sure there's a way to do it- I just need to figure it out. Even if it is possible, this means I'll just have to sit next to an electrical outlet for several hours while it charges, so I better be drinking a Tom Collins, and preferably posting at this message board while it charges!
-
Also, that's a fuckin' expensive adapter kit. Is there anything against just get the wall adapter and plugging it into yer standard universal adapter?
-
No, you can get the wall adapters and just plug the iPod plug into that.
The new nanos have incredible battery life - more than 24 hours. So that should help while traveling.
-
Really? The box says 14hrs, so I thought, you know that that was the best case scenario.
-
Ah, there are two different kinds of nanos - 14 hours is pretty accurate for yours.
-
So the central mystery I'm sitting with right now is if the plug-in charger I bought for my iPod needs a converter or only an adapter for my trip to Indonesia.
Electricity in Indonesia is 220 V, 50 cycles AC. My plug-in charger says "Dual Voltage USB Charger, I/P: AC 100-240 V 50/60 Hz 0.15A, O/P: DC 5V 1A 5W Max." So... as a person who knows very little about electrical currents, I take this to mean that my charger will work just fine with the higher voltage, that no matter what the out put ("O/P" right?) stays the same. If this is so, then all I'll need is an adapter plug so that I have the right prongs. Or is there something I'm miss-reading that could lead to my iPod being fried?
I'm hoping to hell I don't need to buy a step down converter, because all the ones I've seen are big, heavy and clunky.
-
Indeed, you won't need a stepdown for it. You will undoubtedly need some sort of adapter for the actual sockets though, and I have no idea what kind they have in Indonesia. There's something I'd never considered before, I only know what Europe, North America and the UK do.
-
slink! we don't see enough of you here! I hope you're rocking it out.
Thanks for the reply - with your continent hopping, I'm sure you know. The sockets in Indonesia are the same round prongs as in Europe (as several travel guides and the little wall chart at the travel shop confirmed), and this type of adapter is very easy to find here - the plain rubber ones are only about $4, and nice and small. This means there's no need to buy anything elaborate, which is great! Huzzah!
Also, I (ASCII symbol for "am obsessed with") my iPod. So much. It's been less than a month since I got it, and I can't even imagine life without it now. Is so good.
-

Welcome to my world. A world without an i-pod is a world I don't want to live in.
~Paul
-
damn, don't get all up in my world, then. iPod all being broken, all suddenly working on the day I decide to take it to Apple... all breaking again the next day... screen all blank, all telling me that This USB Device is Not Recognized...
-
I will deny the possibility of this happening until it happens to me.
Also, I was disgusted at the exorbitant price of skins, and so I made my own out of craft foam based on this (http://www.sneakmove.com/2005/09/diy-ipod-nano-case-with-urban-camo.html) template. It only vaguely looked like an 8 yr old made it until I put the glitter glue on... But at least I have the template, so I can remake a better one now that I've had practice. I found the semi-rigid plastic packing makes and nice screen cover... but what about the click wheel? Any suggestions as to a material to cover the click wheel with that wont bar functionality?
-
oh, no, side_show, the reason mine is being a bitch is... it's kind of old at this point. And I am against my two options: "Daddy, I want a new iPod! This one is so... old!", and "I am getting a job, for purpose of buying a new iPod, which... I don't know how much I'll use it. And I'd rather buy shit for my guitar."
-
Man, those things got tracking devices and the new ones, microphones.
Stick with CDs, they're virtually free.
-
Cort, most of the new Mac computers don't have Firewire ports either. Apple lost that fight, and gave up.
Not so. All current Mac models still ship with standard Firewire. There was a big kerfluffle when the rev.A MacBook Pro shipped without FW800, but that's been remedied in the latest revision.
Firewire is still the de facto standard for digital video and high-speed external storage. Apple dropped it from the iPod to cut costs and size.
</>pedant
Personally I'm not happy about the switch. I use my 3G iPod as a boot drive more often than I use it for playing music, and as far as I know you still can't boot from USB 2.0 drives. When I replace this thing next year I'll probably go for the oldest refurbished unit I can find.
-
You may not be able to boot from USB2 via the Mac, but I can on my Windows box.
It's a BIOS thing, it has nothing to do with the OS.
-
I'm all for booting anywhere I can get it.
-
S'truth. I actually used my old 40Gb iPod as a lifeboat when I ran a linux live cd on my laptop and copied files to it when the hard drive crashed and it was unbootable otherwise.
Sure, some of the disc sectors were corrupt, but I saved probably 85% of what I needed to.
Thanks Linux+iPod!

As I might have mentioned before, I got one of the 10-G second generation iPods when I was in grad school. Being a Windows user and trying to deal with Firewire is a huuuuge pain in the aorta. And the Firewire cable that was shipped with the unit was total crap -- I finally had to buy a new Firewire cable just to be able to load music onto it.
I can't fuck*ng wait to get one of the new USB iPods. My iPod is so old that it only supports MP3 format music, which blows because the AAC lossless format takes up much less space. Also making playlists on the fly would be nice.
EDIT: Also joughy******, the new rich editing in posts in Firefox 2 is great. highlighted misspelled words in red is super-fabulous.

I'm a fan of any technology that makes me look less stupid.
