Okay, so I just noticed a quote from JL over on the thread about Pearce in People & Places:
(Men with sisters) are not, however, less likely to wear black (trousers) with white socks and brown shoes.
This has inspired in me a great concern. See, I recently realized that, while I own a pair or two of black trousers, I don't own any black shoes. (Or black socks, but that's another issue entirely...) All of my shoes right now are either navy blue or various brown shades; while one of the brown pairs has a black accent, that hardly seems adequate. As such, I am at dire risk of looking like a total loser whenever I go out. How do I remedy this? Just suck it up and buy some black shoes? Accept my dorkitude?
-
I think it depends. Some womens' trousers and shoes are such that the two could be combined successfully. However, if you've the least bit of doubt, buy some black shoes and socks.
-
I'm sorry but I can't believe anyone really cares about this. Come on, I can wear black and brown if I want to, goddamn.

For the record, I don't particularly care, but I know someone does, and I don't want to risk people who may have impact on my career assuming I'm incapable of correctly dressing myself.

Oh man, see, I am the sort to feel very uncomfortable in my own skin should I enact what I believe to be a fashion faux pas... but then I would probably never notice if someone else was enacted said faux pas. In fact the only times I really have negative thoughts about others' dressing choices is with teen girls dressed like hookers who are smart enough to know better, and old men wearing plaid suit jackets over plaid shirts with plaid ties and plaid #####, all of which are different types of plaid (I'm not kidding, I saw this at a small town funeral... The guy was sitting right across from me chatting it up with my SO at the wake, and the plaid suit jacket was polyester and mainly mint green. And he was not goofing around.)
But really V, black shoes go with almost everything, and if you get your self a really neutral/simple pair of a decent quality, you will never lack appropriate footwear. I'd go for a simple pair of mary janes - classic, yet feminine, or hush puppies - classic and sensible.
When it comes to your #####... it also depends on the cut of the pant - are they dress ##### or casual? If they're casual, you can probably get away with just about any shoes anyway.
-
V-- or, get a pair of Black Doc Martens. Come on!

... and old men wearing plaid suit jackets over plaid shirts with plaid ties and plaid ******, all of which are different types of plaid (I'm not kidding, I saw this at a small town funeral... The guy was sitting right across from me chatting it up with my SO at the wake, and the plaid suit jacket was polyester and mainly mint green. And he was not goofing around.)
that cat sounds soooo fly. if he was in vice it would be under do's for damn sure.

I would die before I would wear anything but black shoes with black trousers. And trust me, my standards for dress are extremely low.
However, the relevant question is really, would I notice if someone else wore brown shoes? I don't actually know.
-
my standards for dress are extremely low
Apparently not low enough.
The ##### side of my wardrobe consists almost entirely of black trousers and the two pairs of shoes I wear most of the time are black leather and black & white suede respectively but I wouldn't see a big deal with switching it up with some nice brown leather shoes. I think if you are wearing white running shoes or something you've gone off the wrong end but if you are wearing running shoes anyway you probably aren't in a situation where it matters what you are dressed like.
-
I actually don't own any blue ##### because I can never remember what shoes/socks one is supposed to wear with them. So my ##### are either black or khaki. Although I usually just wear blue jeans and sneakers every single day.
-
let me just say, I adore the fashion which is acceptable in College. The other day, I jokingly wore a tie over a polo shirt. I was complimented about 10 times in 30 minutes.
then we went out in public, and the staring began! oof.

The Rule Of Socks: Match your socks to your trousers, regardless of color. (If you match your socks to your shoes, it looks like you're wearing boots; if you want to look like you're wearing boots, then wear some boots.)
Ladies, though, can get away with something most men can't: black trousers plus red heels equals sexy on a walk. Especially slingbacks.
-
Am I the only guy ever who has never understood how red heels are sexy? Heels in general can be nice for how they accentuate a lady's legs but the really high ones just make me think 'ow what are you doing to your arch woman?' and the bright red ones make me want to give you an eye exam to make sure your obvious colour blindness is not going to endanger others while you are driving.
-
Well, for starters, you're 16. When you're 19, chicks in birkenstocks and dredlocks might float your boat. Things change. When you were 11, did you like girls in shorts? Did you care? How about skirts? How about now?
-
I've always kind of had a thing for chicks in the one piece dungarees.
-
Perhaps you do not have the responsibility to wear black #####. Dark ##### are a privilege, damn it, not a right.
-
I actually don't own any blue ****** because I can never remember what shoes/socks one is supposed to wear with them. So my ****** are either black or khaki. Although I usually just wear blue jeans and sneakers every single day.
I own blue #####. I wear black shoes with them. And blue socks.
What Choop said about socks.

I think we're missing the point of my previous post, here. The problem was the triple threat of brown on white on black. Black on black on black is ideal, of course, but black on black on brown would be acceptable. Black on white on black could even be considered stylish, if, for instance, one were Michael Jackson. But the trifecta was just a bit much for our senior prom.
And by some miracle, the shoes and socks both showed up in the photos.
