Title: Cats: Small Mammals, spoiled as hell
Post by: linnea on November 11, 2006, 03:48:44 pm
Yeah, as we've already established, the damn moggies rule my life.

So for the past few days my gatos have been filling up my apartment with prodigious amounts of shedded fur. I typically blame Milan (AKA "The Fluffy One" or "Little Fluffy") because he is the one with a luxuriant, fluffy coat. Lennybruce is a much more svelte guy with a coat that is short and to the point. Milan has what I call "fluffy britches" on his hind legs that he hates for me to pet. Anyway, that reminds me that I have to buy some more Miele vacuum bags because I've filled most of mine up with kittyfur.

Every day that I've come home there has been a ridiculous hairball in the living room. Always on the carpet right next to the linoleum. Since the only one I've heard hacking has been the sweet Milan, I always figured that he was the miscreant with the tummy full of fur. Not so! I came home today to find Lennybruce wrestling with a hairball demon of his own. I immediately got a paper plate (I always cut it in half and find it to be very handy for cleaning up) and my bottle of Nature's Miracle and a fistful of paper towels. Nothin' like a hairball straight outta the cat (gaaaaag).  >:(

The little boys hate the Hairball Remedy, they HATE IT TO HELL. I always feel terrible about putting it on their coats, but they run whenever they see the tube. I imagine that it must feel like getting slathered with sewage, because they always run fiercely, look terribly embarrassed, and hide for a long time afterwards.

Have you tried different brands of hairball remedy? They taste different. I mean, they appear to - I say this not from personal experience but from observation of the cats' reactions to them.

Otherwise shave the little bastards. That'll teach 'em.

Why thank you.

I suppose you assumed I was some kind of bunnyhugger type.  But I suggest that if you slaved over animals all day, you'd probably feel like slapping one upside the head once in a while too.

Man, omba, you are merciless. Now I have to wash kitty grease spots off my furniture, 'cos they've got no fur to absorb their natural skin oils.

Hahaha, those are "Sphynx" kittens. Aren't they pathetic-looking? Those poor little rats. They look so forlorn without their fur.

And the thing I said about washing them is true, without the fur they leave kittygrease on the furniture and whatnot. Mmm.. cat grease stains on the sofa. Plus you have to clean their ears when you bathe them, and use artificial-tears eyedrops to clean their eyes.

A nekkid Scottish Fold would probably be the most pathetic and horrifically-genetically mutated cat ever. However, they are making the "Allerca" cats that are genetically engineered to be hypoallergenic. I think they cost about $4K apiece, though.

Hahahaha, quoted for truth. Also, *****_god's reaction of "WTF ARE THOSE THINGS" was hilarious.  Under the sweet Fluffy One's coat (Milan, my folded-ear boy), he looks like a plucked Cornish game hen.

I love the photos because I thought that the similarity in the photograph between Lenny and the Sphynx kitten on the right side was uncanny. The Sphynx kitten even has a pink/black nose like Lenny does. Same thing with their face shape, whisker pads, ears, and cheekbones. However, Sphynx cats don't have whiskers, which I think is really sad. Talk about a genetically crippled individual! They're naked, prone to sunburn, and don't even have whiskers. Poor little dudes.

Now you can call me malicious, but what made me laugh was the idea that you were so rough with shaving them that you plucked out one of their eyes!

Anyway, what about a serious daily brushing?  I highly recommend  Zoom Groom (http://www.happypetstop.com/entirely/homefamily_toys_and_treats_556513_cat_zoom_groom.html) - it works so well and takes fur off in sheets!  We have a fluffy one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/295417363/in/set-72157594371924531/) (it's hard to tell here, but you can bury your hand in her fur) and a not so fluffy one (http://www.flickr.com/photos/side_show/295425351/in/set-72157594371924531/), and one that's so terrified of everything that I have no photo to share.  We brush em but good and hairballs are not a problem.  Also, my cats love it - it's like a kitty massage!

HEH!! Yeah, I love how the "Milan" in the shaved-cats photo looks all terrified and Cycloptic. Heh.

I am checking out the "Groom Zoom" link as I type this. As long as it doesn't make any noise, my guys should be down with it. I have a hella expensive Miele canister vacuum cleaner that is extremely quiet, and they flee the second they see me hauling it out.

EDIT: Sweet! The Groom Zoom is a rubber brush. Sweet Milan will adore that thing... I have a fine-toothed brush and he goes nuts every time I ask him if he wants "Brushies". He loves getting brushed. Lennybruce isn't so keen on getting brushies, but his coat is much leaner.
Title: Re: Cats: Small Mammals, spoiled as hell

Yeah, it's rubber, and it sort of creates a staticly charged field as you rub with it so that the fur is attracted to the brush.  I was brushing them today and they get this sort of dazed/stoned look on their faces from the shear joy of it.  As far as I can tell you can get the Zoom Groom at almost every pet store for fairly cheap.  I'm not sure if you'll find one locally, but if not, it's easy to find - I just linked to the first site that had it.  It works equally well on the short haired one as it does on the longer haired one, and my SO's parents and grandma both use it too, which is how we got one.

Yes, I have been following Allerca since they first announced that they were starting research.  I assumed that someday I would be so fabulously wealthy that I'd be able to afford the $4,000 for a genetically engineered allergy-free cat.  Now that I find out that they basically didn't have to do any real genetic-engineering type work and they're pretty much just cat breeders, it makes me so mad.

Also, if I remember right, that NY Times article said that the alternate-protein gene that causes the non-allergicness is dominant, so you'd actually only need one non-allergenic cat to breed with whatever and you'd have a good chance of non-allergic offspring.  I had a roommate for several years who had pretty much the only cat I've ever been around that doesn't cause me massive respiratory failure, but unfortunately that cat is fixed.

Title: Re: Cats: Small Mammals, spoiled as hell

My parents cat is vicious, and this weekend I was home studying for finals.  I have a makeshift bedroom in the 2nd living room, which is also where we keep the tree.  I was laying by the tree writing a paper when, out of nowhere, the cat jumps on my back really swiftly, with claws out, and precedes to run away.  It ruined my favorite shirt.  It maybe a happy new hiding place for her, but it was a horrible experience for me.

The really sucky thing about this is that there are like 4 awesome stray cats that hang out in my apartment complex that I feed and let come in for rain and stuff.  My parents could have had one of those, but noooo, they had to get some asshole cat.  That is the thing about cats; they are either like a million times cooler than dogs, or complete jerks.  There is really no way to train a cat to be cool like a dog, just a fuck*ng lottery.
Title: Re: Cats: Small Mammals, spoiled as hell

See our cats are genearally cool as all hell, but are occasionally such jerks that it's mind blowing.  They're all like "oh, you're not feeling well?  Well purr, purr, purr, I'm going to lay on you will the gentle warmth and rumble of my purrs lulls you to sleep."  But then they're all "I'm going to bite the other cat on the anus!"  Bite!

Also, our cats aren't using the tree as a hiding place, but one of them totally rocks out on napping on the cozy quilted tree skirt.  However, they are all clearly disappointed that our new tree stand doesn't allow for them to drink from the reservoir.  They all came over when the tree went up, clearly expecting the regular supply of fresh, Balsam-y infused water, and then looked over at us, like "What the hell?"

This only seems like contradictory behavior if you assume that they are being nice to you when you are sick. If instead you assume that they are just using you for your body heat when you are lying down and they can get comfortable on you... then you see that they are actually jerks all the time.

On the subject of weird cat behavior: apparently the younger of my parent's two cats (Ashby, almost two years old, adopted from the animal shelter as a wee kitten after being found in a ditch, kind of cute but sort of off-kilter (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/Eiviiaru/ashby-small.jpg)) purred for the first time anyone can remember last night. He was lying on my parents' bed and was being petted, and for the first time in his history he responded to this with purring. This is quite a surprise, given that previously we had sort of put him in the category of "cats who just won't do this" (like the late, lamented Puff, who would grunt instead).

Man, I need to get a Christmas tree. My boys are sorely deprived by not having an annual, magical new hidey-place. They would love that...well...unless Lennybruce decided to climb the tree. That could get ugly.

That is why screw the stand to a chunck of plywood and weight that sucker down. A nice fluffy tree skirt helps avoid broken ornaments. It's worth it to see a kitty face peering out of a tree at you from face level, all acting out little feral fantasies.

OH MY GOOOOOOD!

Remember how much I love Daifuku? And cute things? Well there was a cute bunny named Oolong (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oolong_the_Rabbit), and his owner liked to gently balance stuff on Oolong's little noggin, and take pictures!
Here's a piccie of Oolong balancing a daifuku on his noggin!  CUTE OVERLOAD WARNING.

As wikipedia says, the head performance is actually a result of the domestic rabbit's natural tendency to cuddle with each other, other animals (like housecats) and their owners by submissively putting their heads underneath the others' chin. They seem to find the contact and light weight on their foreheads comforting. Any training involved would be minimal.

The best known of Oolong's photographs was one that was widely used as an image macro. Featuring Oolong balancing a dorayaki on his head, it had the tagline "I have no idea what you're talking about... so here's a bunny with a pancake on its head."

okay, update from Alaska's Crazy Cat Lady (tm):

I went to a local nonprofit's auction tonight, and I bought a soft fleecy blanket (it was handmade and I bid a hell of a lot on it to win). Was it for my bed? No. was it for my sofa for when I watch movies? No. I bought it solely for Milan and Lennybruce to sleep on. They both like to knead on soft things, and Lenny even goes so far as to bite whatever he's kneading, just like he was a wee toothless laddie who was trying to nurse on his mama. The Megatokyo Sad Girl in Snow blanket was getting a little ratty from all that Lenny-nursing, so I figured it was time to get a new one.

*sigh*. Yeah, I know, dating is awkward, especially after dating a crap dude who dumped me via email...being the crazy cat lady is so much more comfortable.

Also: I have lost seven pounds in the past three weeks, so the Hacker's Diet and working out occasionally is going well. I hope to be down to fightin' weight in a couple of months.

Time for another kitty update.

I came home from work for lunch, and as per usual I scooped up Lennybruce to give him a kiss (I can't pick up the Sweet Milan because it hurts his back). I notice that Lenny's muzzle and face is TAN and BEIGE instead of the typical snowy white. I go into the bathroom...and he's hopped up on the sink, opened the medicine cabinet, and pulled out a bunch of shit to play with. Notably missing is my foundation brush (http://store.bareescentuals.com/on/demandware.store/Sites-BareEscentuals-Site/default/ViewProductDetail-Start?ProductRef=30931%40Sites-BareEscentuals&CatalogCategoryID=4dUKAANp0A4AAAEQXil3Tgxu&JumpTo=BrowseStandardCatalog). I look under the sofa, and lo and behold...Lenny dragged it out to play with it, and covered his face in makeup as he was chewing it. Thanks, dude.

>_<

oh well, it's the price that I pay for having adorable kitties. I about died laughing as I looked at Lenny's little smudged face.

Of course, Milan is being sweet and good, and lying on his back in the middle of the living room floor.

Cats with make-up?  Here's a couple embarrassing things:  when I lived alone, I used to put a tiny dab of pinkish tinted CUNT lip gloss on my cat's nose (which is pink already) to intensify the pink.  Also, when he'd cuddle-nuzzle me, he would be CUNT scented.  Now that seems a little odd, but when I lived alone, totally normal.  These days, our smallest cat, she loves to be dressed.  It's really odd.  The SO's buddy came over (this was years ago) after seeing some strippers and he had one of those lace garters that a stripper gave him.  Later, I realized it was the perfect size to be a kitty tutu.  I've occasionally dressed her in other things - a little doll dress, a tiny pair of pixie wings - she's very happy to be clothed, and gets upset when I try to take clothes off her.  Now if she sees the tutu, she comes running over and actually climbs into it herself.  It's a little weird, but she likes it so much.  A few days ago she put it on, and I sort of forgot to take it off and would just notice her walking past with a tutu on every so often, so she was wearing a tutu for days and days.  Then I noticed she was grooming it like it was a part of herself a few days ago.  Yesterday I took it off - it had been about a week.  This is really just a step too close to crazy-cat-person, so I won't go out an buy her an actual small dog outfit... but I know she'd love it.

My kitty, Angel (who was snow-white, and who had been my pet and companion since I was five) died six months ago yesterday, and I want another one so bad. So so so so so so so so so bad. So bad I want a kitty to name Chochacho, or Roast Beef, or something dumb and music-related that my boyfriend will come up with. I don't care. We can name the kitty Lamp, as long as I get a kitten.

One of the reasons I really see potential with my current SO: he is a mega cat person, so neither of us will be able to stop the other from adopting kitties, and we will grow old and be crazy cat codgers together.

Sorry, I know that's OT, but I want a kitty.

RMJ: Get another kitteh -- not just one, but TWO kittehs from the same litter. It will heal your soul to have a new baby around the house. Seriously. Angel sounds like she was lucky to have you as a mom, and I'm really sad to hear about losing her. Getting two ROCKS. They curl up together, wash each other's faces, and they're never bored. I highly, highly recommend getting littermates. SERIOUSLY.

smells: HELLA CUUUUUTE! I wish that my little dudes liked to wear clothes. Your cat is doing the kitty equivalent of wearing her Wonder Woman costume to the grocery store at age 4. Awesome. AWESOME!!!

However, I am surprised that he tolerated lip gloss on his nosey. I got a really great surprise-kiss on Lennybruce's tummy today, but then when I angled in for another kiss he kicked me in the face! Lennyyyy!!! :( I don't kiss him when I'm wearing lip gloss, because it would take forever for him to wash it out of his fur.

theinev: the cat secretly likes you to call him that. Your mom just needs to make peace with the fact that she overfeeds the cats. My little dudes are pretty chunky from apartment life.

jaydub: a lot of Scottish Folds do that. The poor sweet Fluffy One has a stiff back and tail because it's a fault of the breed.

I think the issue re: overfeeding is that the girl is much smaller (not only in terms of fatness, but in general. He is like a tiger.) and he eats not only his food, but whatever she doesn't eat. We don't want to give them less food for fear that she'd end up eating less as well.
they are littermates!

the best, though, was our first cat. Luna. Weirdly, I have very few memories, even though this was when I was 14-15 years old. She was run over by the girl who lived down the road-- she never knew that it was our cat that she hit. Apparently she picked Luna up and wrapped her in a blanket, and sobbed uncontrollably, and buried her in the back yard. Her dad told us this, and begged us not to tell her it had been our cat. That cat was perfect. Because she was basically a dog. All she wanted was for us to pet her and rub her belly. She loved to snuggle. She cuddled with our dog. and then she disappeared, and we didn't know what happened until the neighbor-man saw a sign we put up and called us.

I was always bitter when I saw that girl.
But I guess her parents made up for it-- I slept at their house in Bern on my way to Brussels. And figured out how to work their oven for them.
I don't think they remembered the whole cat thing, though. That whole trip has the aura of a dream for me, now.

Mine was a see-thru case and neon water-cooling.

A see through kitty would be kind of disturbing.

I'm even a little weirded out by glass giraffe.

Although I suppose its easier to tell when its time to feed them

Oh MAAAN!! I want a Canon D80 like Malingering (http://www.flickr.com/photos/malingering/sets/1785520/). I need to be able to capture awesome cat moments (http://www.flickr.com/photos/malingering/sets/72157594509829140/) when I'm sitting around watching the kitty TV. Yes, a $1,200 camera sounds like exactly what I need to take more piccies of my little rats.

Lennybruce was over near my bunkers rooting around (they are highly expensive personal protective garments that I have to wear when I'm on a call. They're designed to be resistant against blood and other pathogens, and I keep them by the door when I'm on call so I can get into them quickly). Sometimes he tries to tunnel down one of the legs, which is hilarious. I was like, "Lenny, what are you doing? You'd better not be scratching those."

Then he reared his head with one of his many Alaskan catnip pillows in his mouth, which he had been rooting around for. Then, with the cat toy still in his mouth, he LEAPED over the heap of bunkers, laid down, picked up the catnip pillow in his paws and rubbed his face into it. I really, really wish I had gotten a picture of that.

my ex has an SLR (possibly a canon?) and she certainly does not use it to take pictures of her cat. I loved that cat so much... he was -the dude-.

She does, however, use it to take semi-nude pictures of her gross-ass self and send them to me. Ew.

ok, It's mostly that she sent me a picture of her tattoo. which was really low on her hip. So it was... a little revealing.
In an unfortunate way, as she seems to have... gotten a lot less pretty since we were dating.

I miss that cat though. he was so cool... he basically just wanted you to pet him, 24/7.
He also had some issues... she was pretty sure he couldn't see in the dark, as he always seemed to bump into things/fall off things at night.

Is it a Bad tattoo?  Whenever someone takes a picture of their tattoo, it is always terrible.

yeah. um. it was basically a tattoo-ized version of this image (http://www.roots-and-branches.com/Sonic%20Youth%20Goo%20DL.jpg) done at a scary place in new york. She was, at the time, 16 I believe. I am not aware that she particularly liked this album. She denies this, though, and says it is one of her favorites.

Basically it is in prime stretching area. Apparently it's already kind of distorted.

HOT DAMN that is bad, maybe the worst ever.

I'd sooner get a tattoo of Bin Laden's face than that.

my favoritest part:
she called me, while she was getting it, at work, to tell me she was getting it. She thought I would be really excited, despite the fact that I told her that I hated tattoos. And that I hated the concept of a tattoo of "Goo."

PS: the picture was so upsetting that... I literally blocked the memory of it after the first time I saw it. I didn't remember that I had seen it before until the second time I saw it.

Man, weird.  Tell her to get an even more rediculous tattoo and see if she does it.  Like a Wile E Coyote head with a human body or the word "Lightning" or something.

I like the concept of just getting a random word tattooed on you, like some kind of weird Anglophone equivalent of Hanzi Smatter (http://www.hanzismatter.com/) (although that would also involve randomly writing some letters wrong).

I am in no way a proponent of human scarification rituals such as these.

However, if you're gonna do it, do it right.

A heart with the name of... either a broken-up band that will never get back together again in it or the name of a famous woman who is in no way considered a sex symbol inside the heart, such as Madeline Albright or Leni Reifenstahl or something similar.

OK, let's be honest. now I want the word "Lightning" tattooed somewhere on my body. I will accept suggestions as to the font-- something Sans Serif, I think.

Like this? This might work.
But I was thinking more like... basically the font which is on iPod screens, except bold. That is the closest I can find to the font I am imagining. unless I go through microsoft works and copy/paste Lightning hundreds of times, trying out every single font...

Chicago (which is, IIRC, the iPod display font) is also an excellent choice for tattoos. In general, I would go for something sans-serif or otherwise relatively unadorned, assuming you actually want your tattoo to be readable later.

Alternately, I must admit that I find Garamond the classiest of the serif-having everyday-use fonts. It's really very nice and understated.

I use Garamond in my email templates.  I've liked it since I first read Harry Potter.  Nothing to do with the story, I just like the way it looks.

Candy Bits (http://www.fontfinder.ws/10094/Candy-Bits.html). Or Free3of9 is always popular for that distopian future look.

Back to los gatos:

God, I am going to leave tomorrow for Denver for a couple of weeks. I'm already getting anxious about leaving "the little boys" (Milan and Lennybruce) behind for 2 1/2 weeks. They will be with a qualified professional catsitter with excellent references (http://www.theonion.com/content/node/36656)...but damn. I am going to miss them SO MUCH.

Everyone says, "They're CATS. They will be just fine without you." Milan is very social and loves everyone, so I don't worry about him. Lenny, on the other hand, is my special little guy, and he gets sad when I leave. My mom said that when she used to catsit for me that he would just pine while I was gone. He would be so sad. My catsitter up here says that Lenny mostly hides from her for the first week or so. Then after that I guess he gets sad and lonely enough that he will come up to her for petties. Plus he recognizes that she feeds them.

*sigh* I wish I had a digital or tape recorder so that I could record them purring. Of course, it's a pale substitute for Milan and Lenny curled up next to my head an purring... but dammit. :`( I love going on vacation...but I also hate going on vacation because I have a hard time sleeping when the little rats aren't there.

How pathetic am I?? Jeez.

I talk to my cats on the phone when I am here at work - and they go crazy. They get really excited and nuzzle the phone and purr and everything. Pooey will even start drooling. You might see if that's workable if you call your cat-sitter while you are gone.

Suh-weeet! Kellichou had a Zoom Groom(tm) at her house that her cats did not like. She brought it over and I got POUNDS of fur off the Fluffy One (Milan). Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn. Milan sheds quite a bit, but I was astonished at the huge volumes of loose fur that the Zoom Groom wrought. Crazy. I should have taken a photo of it. Anyway, I'm really glad that I got it. More brushies for the sweet fluffy Mi-wan.

A yes, the SO's grandmother was visiting today, and we were brushing our cats and I was giggling about how the rubber nubbies on hers are practically worn off from brushing her giant orange tabby.  Our cats get a quizzical facial expression when we brush them with the Zoom Groom.  Sort of like "I like the way this feels, but I'm not sure if it's okay to like the way this feels."  With three cats, you can get a cat-sized mound of fur per brushing.

I got so upset in my film class on Friday... we were talking about Umberto D, and people said things like "why is he freaking out so much? it's just a stupid dog." and "I mean... I feel like De Sica makes the dog too much of a character. Dogs don't have personalities like that!" and the like. "it's so pathetic... why is he so upset that he lost his dog? what... because maybe it's dead? I feel like I'm missing something."

I am going to name my future dog Flike after the dog in that film. oh goodness, that dog. We watched the scene where Umberto is looking for his dog at the pound like 5 times, and every time I got a little veklempt (sp?).

I'll reveal my ignorance by saying that I have no clue what film you're talking about, but damn.  Just damn.

Anybody who's had a dog (or any pet) that they've developed a relationship with would understand.  Anybody with a pinch of empathy or human feeling should get it.

You should make them watch Jurassic Bark. snuf

Today, I got a kitten. The people at the convenience store down the road were trying to find homes for a litter, and we just couldn't resist, so... now there is a tiny animal living in my room. He's black and white and around six weeks old. He doesn't have a name yet, but I'm leaning towards Saburo, although Peregrine (for the plaintive tiny-falcon-esque mews) is kicking around as well.

Have (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/Eiviiaru/heclimbs.jpg) some (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/Eiviiaru/prettyboy.jpg) pictures. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v221/Eiviiaru/hegotseyes.jpg)
