Title: Tippings of hats and shakings of hands.
Post by: Panopticon on March 23, 2007, 06:04:12 am
Hello, all.

I am in my last semester at the Naval Academy.  It is a pretty decent place to be for the most part although at this point I'm itching to move on.  I stumbled upon Achewood when I was a lowly plebe (=freshman) and it seems to tickle a part of my brain that had been just waiting for an opportune moment to be tickled.  It was as if I walked into a new-to-me restaurant at complete random and loved every item on the menu: "Yes, I'll start with a glass of the rabbit ambulance sauvignon.  Ocular shenanigans tartare for the main course, and I'll top it off with a slice of A BLOO BLA BLOO BLOO BLOOOO pie.  My compliments to the chef, Achewood.  Keep the change."

Anyway.  I set up an RSS feed reader so I could stop compulsively checking for updates, but it hasn't helped.  Because, you know, maybe he added some new content and the reader missed at.  At two in the afternoon.  On a Saturday.  It could happen.

my best friend, who is a freshman (I forget what this is called. 1st year cadet?) at the Air Force Academy, informed me that he hadn't read Achewood in months and months. I'm glad to know that this isn't due to some kind of anti-Achewood lesson plan that our government has going on.

welcome.

You are pond scum.

This is not the story of the guy choosing between Wal Mart and the armed forces.

This is a guy choosing, rationally, to be a hired killer.

Well you fuck*ng die.

I totally want to be friends with people who defend hired killers, so that is a good thing.

Likewise, I have this thing where I don't like people who could have done more who choose to feed themselves with the blood of others.  It is not easy to get into Academies, therefore this guy could have gone to nearly any school in the nation, but chose the one that allows him to kill.

Also, the people that defend them.

Well.  This was unexpected.  I was under the misapprehension that this is mainly a place where people come to discuss a comic written for amusement, not a vehicle through which to semi-anonymously disparage the life choices of others.

Joining the military, whether enlisted or officer, whether rationally considered or as an alternative to Wal-Mart, doesn't somehow add up to bloodlust or a callous heart.  Joining the military doesn't even necessarily mean one supports current foreign policy.  But foreign policy decisions aren't up to the military the way our government is structured, nor should they be.  Moreover, there are a multitude of jobs in the armed services through which one can help provide for the nation's defense without being anything remotely resembling a "hired killer."  You make many assumptions, Mr. Hernandez.

And no, theinevitable, there is no governmental anti-Achewood conspiracy.  Recently, though, due to some network security concerns on campus here, they set up a filter that blocks our access to "questionable" sites (pornography, gambling, illegal miscellany), and for some reason Victoria's Secret's website was apparently among those blocked.  Anyway, female midshipmen who actually wanted to purchase clothing complained and I hear they've since restored access.  I suppose the administration feared network security was at risk so long as midshipmen were ogling the models; it seems they didn't anticipate legitimate purposes among those of the fairer sex here.

First of all, not always, but in your case.

Second, yeah, I guess some people just defend imaginary lines, tell the killers where to go, develop the killers weapons and rape other countries women.

This internet thing we've got going here is pretty darned amazing.  You can effortlessly and inexpensively communicate with people across the globe.  You can share ideas and opinions to an extent humans never dreamed of a few generations ago.  It amazes me that some people use it instead to spew venom at people they've never even met.  I'd simply say "let's agree to disagree," but this seems like too much of a fundamental, core-outlook-of-the-world type of incongruity for even that.  Regardless, I came to this board because it looked like a group of smart, generally good people with whom to talk about some words and drawings of anthropomorphic animals.  I've never met another real skin and gristle and bone human being who even heard of Achewood, much less enjoyed it (despite my attempts to introduce it to a number of people), so I figured I'd enjoy a little Achewood-related discourse with some virtual folk.  I thought it'd be polite to say hello and a little about myself.  But that doesn't matter.

Cartoon.  Cats. I like the comic.  I like how Roast Beef gets all angry-indignant when he's drunk, or when he's finished hacking Yahoo.  I like the two-week Uncle Culpepper buildup, even going so far as to off a main character, only to end in the 'bots tearing around in a pickup truck.  I like Ray's Hemingway-voiced blogging wristwatch ("He read a website about Italian sports cars, and then one about loose women").  Cartoon cats.  Exchange of non-vitriolic ideas.  Let's do this.

Please stop being a dick, dude.  Seriously, if you feel the need to be a tremendous dick, please go where such dicktitude is welcomed and expected.  Go be a dick on Slashdot, dude.  Go to YouTube and just post "taht suxxed" for every video you see.

Just keep it out of my house, Keith.

Hi Pan!  Welcome.

You know, I was sort of thinking that us old timers should sort of think up a short intro about who we are, since it's hard to discern who's who at first.  I still have trouble keeping some people straight.

side_show:  I am a mod, longtime reader/poster.  Things that might make me stand out to you as a human (not just random lines of text): I'm Canadian, a theatre artist/writer, and I had an extensive list of insane jobs that put me through university/the first few years of establishing my artistic career, which are fodder for many story/posts of mine including: person in old folks home who put food in blender to mush it, KFC, peer sex-educator, porn video store cashier, Wal-Mart, bookstore, comic & used book store, distributor of food samples (Dunkaroos!), sex column writer, art gallery employee, asst. art gallery manager, call centre 1, call centre 2, call centre 3, actor, file clerk, journalist, workshop planner at children's theatre, playwright, director...  There's more, but I can't remember right now.

I finally realized after living in Maryland for over ten years - you know, I just don't like crab cakes that much. I am sorry if that makes me some kind of traitor.

I like side_show's idea as far as reading everyone else's intros. Writing my own, not so much.  But maybe we should split it to another thread?

I guess that's OK. I've lived in VA for 18 years and I don't like ham. Or senseless bigotry. There's no rule that says you have to like the things that your state is known for.

Welcome, Pan.

Keith's heart is in the right place... from a certain point of view, not wanting anyone to die... but that is neither the voice of progressives here nor was it the polite or sane things to do.

I'm pretty much as against the war against the Iraqi people as anyone in the worldwho hasn't had my family killed in the streets but... man, I salute your drive to serve your country directly. I think nearly everyone here does.

Do I think the motherfuckers in charge are cynically manipulating the noble service of hundreds of thousands of cats like you to settle petty vendettas, enforce hallucinatory religious zealotry and stuck money in the pockets of people already born rich?

Yeah.

If you told me that you were on the cusp of a decision to join up or not today, would I suggest that maybe you find a different way to serve your country until These Bastards are off the reigns and there are people who will respect and honour your drive to service?

Such as "maybe be an EMT or a firefighter or in the Peace Corps or something until someone deserving of leadership is in charge and then get involved later"?

Sure.

But the betrayal of your noble urge by Soulless Rich Fucks ain't on you.

Thank you for being prepared to give everything for us. Am I afraid your potential sacrifice could be wasted by people who only know for silver spoons and Bible study? Yes. Definitely yes.

But that ain't on you. In a saner America, there would be no parentheticals on your service.

Don't judge Keith too harshly, though. There is madness in every direction. Our very culture is on the verge of a nervous breakdown over their inability to reconcile their love of the people trying to defend us and the... abject horror... that those brave men and women have been forced to be involved in.

There is madness in all of us now, blood running from 10000 miles away and on through our television sets in washed-out video flickers, not stopping, nowhere near consideration of stopping.

It is making us all do and say things rashly and from passion before reflection.

Welcome, Pan. It's a fun ride, this Touamb.

Considering that my father, stepfather, both grandfathers, one grandmother, four great grandfathers, good friends, casual acquaintances of moral stripe I admire and thousands of others who I don't know and haven't met, have stood on those imaginary lines for all of us (Canadian friends included) as "voluntary hired killers", here's a virtual cockpunch to those who spit on them for their service.  There's a moral difference between guard dogs and wolves, KH.  The funny thing about the dog, is that even when the sheep piss on him, he's still watching for the wolves.

Canis lupus suffers unfairly in my metaphor, of course, but c'est la vie

I am enjoying the absurdity of the image of a guard dog sustaining sheep urination.  He has seen this before and the look in his eyes says he is too tired to reprimand the simple woolly creature.  He is jaded, this dog, in my mind.  He is bored of sheep piss.  Come up with some new tricks, sheep, he thinks.  The pissing thing has lost its luster.

Thanks to all for the warm welcomes.  I do indeed enjoy the occasional crab cake.  I've read enough of the archives to be somewhat familiar with the sweeping tangentiality of many of the threads, and I have enjoyed witnessing some of the odd places the conversations eventually find themselves.  In your face, collective thread titles.  Don't try to chain us down to one topic, etc.

Most people enter the armed forces for the noblest of reasons.  They can't be held responsible for the policies of their superiors in Washington.  I'm dismayed by the fact that American military personel have been involved in way too many attrocities, but that's what happens when you give a bunch of young guys big guns and then throw them in a pressure cooker.  I don't however think that all military personnel are pond scum hired killers filled with rage and bloodlust.  Panopticon, you seem like a very non crap dude.  You like Achewood and that is what's pertinent. Welcome to TOUAMB.

Per Melanie's suggestion...  Hi, I am Paul, I am the board's picture guy.  I am the boards second eldest member and I have returned to college after being in the workforce for over 20 years.  I'm also known as the moustache guy and once the entire board but moustaches on their avatars in tribute to me.  I won the Mr. Congeniality award at the 205 TOUAMBies.  I also placed 2nd in the TOUAMBie MVP contest placing a distant second to Side Show.  I've been here since day 1 and I am member no. 12.

Keith, you should never be a dick to strangers EVER.  You have been warned!

Heh, tiny can for CJ.

Also, pan, welcome. I hope that you enjoy it here.

I live in rural Alaska and I am a volunteer firefighter and EMT-II. My day job is doing mapmaking, which I really enjoy. I have an identical twin sister back home in Colorado and a younger sister that I miss very much. You will probably hear my name on the board referenced with pegging and Marmite. I have two adorable Scottish Fold cats named Milan and Lennybruce.
(fuck you Ray, Scottish Folds are AWESOME)
Military stuff: My father is a Vietnam War veteran and ex-Marine. A friend of mine back home in Colorado went to Annapolis. My crap-dude ex-fiance was in the Army with a combat engineering battalion and did a year in Iraq. He is part of the reason why I moved up here.

As for introductions:

I'm Mike. I live in Los Angeles but grew up in a small town at the edge of the Adirondacks in Northern New York State. I'm in my  middle twenties and am trying (stumblingly) to get into writing for television and/or for film. I'm about three years into working entry-level assistant type stuff and I still sort of haven't figured out what the next step is but... such predicaments I must forge ahead. Liberal Democrat, lapsed-Catholic agnostic, Mets fan.

I live with my girlfriend, who has almost completed her masters in teaching, and my brother, who is a forensic analysis in a medical lab that tests piss for drugs. We live in a two-bedroom apartment in a part of town where we and the landlady are the only people who speak English as our first language.

A dude is into pirate radio, Adult Swim, silent movies, prog rock and rambling on internet message boards.

I'm that guy who says something that would be funny or interesting in two sentences but it takes him two pages to lay it out there. That is my role on message boards and it is a time honoured legacy that I decently carry forth into the future.

Welcome to the boards, Pan!

As for me: My name's Amanda. up until the end of February, I was a first-year Ph.D. student in Neuroscience at Ohio State, but about a month ago I decided to take a leave of absence for mental-health reasons and moved back in with my parents, who live in rural Louisiana. However, I intend to return to graduate school and complete my training in behavioral neuroscience in preparation for a career in animal research. I am a pretty big nerd, and I roleplay more than is probably healthy. I have a fairly Beef-and-Molly-like relationship with my SO, whom I generally call "The Gentleman Caller."

I'm a board admin, and I've been around basically since the split from Dumbrella, but I don't have a lot of injokes surrounding me, because I am not a terribly notable person. Actually, my injoke may just be self-deprecation, come to think of it.

My favorite single Achewood strip: THESE KNIVES! (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=12072001)

Greetings, Pan!

You can call me MoF. I am a relatively recent member of these boards. I live in Madison, WI and I suspect I am some sort of female version of lfm, but way, waaayyyy less cool. Well, okay; I'm only like lfm in that it also takes me two pages to convey two sentences' worth of information. The biggest difference is that lfm is funny, whereas I am not. I try to be, but it rarely works. So I usually just end up taking life too seriously.

I love ballet, food, and languages; the order of preference changes haphazardly. I teach for a living, and choosing that as a career (well it kinda chose me) was the second best decision I ever made, the first being to sign up for Northern Shaolin kung fu lessons.

I live with my husband, Mr. MoF who is responsible for almost all of my nerdery, but I can't fully blame him: he merely optimized the potential that was already there.

Another difference: Mof's bosoms are elegant reminders of her being a lady whereas mine are evidence of my... aversion to gymnasia and my love of Hostess Zingers.

Also, she is definitely cooler than me because... not only did her husband take her name, her husband took her internet name. That is pretty much the most progressive marriage ever.

I'm Jough.  Everything I write is an injoke and you're outside of it.  Sorry.

My name rhymes with a certain part of the female anatomy.

I'm from Philadelphia and moved to Chicago in November.  I work for a web design firm here and am lead developer on the Chicago Public Library project (it'll be pretty sweet once we launch).

I play chess, write poetry, am working on a textbook about interactive design, and since I've been playing most days at work (it's that kind of place) I've become very serious about my ping pong.

I used to play guitar 12 hours a day every day for many years and recently took up playing again.

I take photos (http://flickr.com/photos/jough/) of things around the city.

I lost 80 pounds in five months, and then put twenty back on after moving here, and now am down ten of those again.  It's just a blip on the road to overall healthiness.  I'm paying it no mind.

I've recently bought a Macbook and it quickly became my primary computer.  I'm not exactly a "switcher" but rather an aggregator, but dang if this isn't one nice little notebook.  I'm using it to write this post.

I'm not very religious, and I feel bad for people who are.

I prefer vanilla to chocolate.

I prefer wine to beer and scotch to wine.

TV shows still on the air - Veronica Mars, Lost, 24, Scrubs, The Office US, Studio 60 (although not for long :( ), Boston Legal, The Class, South Park, Battlestar Galactica

I'm a 30 year old who lives in the best place on the face of the earth. (Portland: home of Pat's gay dad.)

I lurk more than I post.   If I'm inclined to post, usually it's just a couple lines of text.   Better to let people assume I'm an idiot, than to prove it.

I work for a phone company.   Some times I work 40 hours during the day, other times I work 90 hour weeks.  My job is boredom puncuated by terror.   Keeps things interesting.

At the moment, I'm posting drunk.

Roy Rogers (RIP?)

There is a Roy Rogers in the Thruway stop just outside of the town I grew up in.

...come to think of it, though, the only extant Roy Rogers' I know of exist at Thruway stops.

Perhaps the chain's name was only perserved for existing deals with truck stops and such forth?

Truckers are very brand loyal and tourists don't care, they just want to get a hamburger without having to get off the Thruway and witness rural poverty to get that hamburger.

I'm thinking he means that his name rhymes with toe. He never specified that it's only part of the female anatomy.

Roy's was acquired by Hardee's. In most the country all locations changed their name to Roy's. But there were a few pockets of resistance where the reverse happened. This is true in the DC area and apparently at truck stops.

I'm Mark. I'm in the first year of my English degree, so I basically spend my time sitting around reading some of the most awesome works of literature ever and pretending that I'm working really hard. This is probably a large part of why I'm almost irritatingly happy just about all the time. My university terms being obscenely short, I spend about half the year at home in West Yorkshire and half in Cambridge; if I lash out with pent-up rage at any point it's probably because I've been exiled to the south too long. On the rare occasions that I am neither reading things nor writing other, far less worthy things, I could really be doing anything. I'm much better at flitting than I am at hobbies. Though most likely I'll just be putting the kettle on.

Sadly, they do.  Oh sure, electricity spins the wheels on the subway, but fossil fuel powers the turbines - at least mostly.  On your coast, its probably even coal.  We burn a lot of natural gas out here, which despite being considerably cleaner - if costly - is still returning millions of tons of sequestered CO2 to the atmosphere.  Folks rhapsodizing over electric cars tend to forget that as well - they're  not cleaner - they're just generating more pollution from point sources in someone else's (poorer) neighborhood.

Word. Until we find a way to boil the oceans with geothermal heat, were gonna need to burn something and most things make CO2 when they combust.

Which means that I not only choose fonts for a living, but I also make them move around your TV screen.

I'm not a frequent poster, but once I was nominated for the Most Disturbing Avatar award at the first, and so far the only TOUAMBIES Awards. Not for the current, rather friendly-looking Comedian Fry – back then I used to sport the Polish version of the ALIEN movie poster. It looked great with a mustache.

I can't help but think whoever invented these Smiles fries was a sadistic bastard. They're not even as good as regular fries, being made of some kind of molded potato paste. But when I eat them I try to deal with each one in one big bite, just to avoid the sight of a face with half its head chopped off… still smiling at me.

That's the whole reason I like eating them in more than one bite. :) It's also the reason I enjoy eating Peeps (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peeps), my favorite preparation being Peeps Brulee. Everything about Peeps Brulee is deeply satisfying: from threading them on the skewers, to holding them over the open flame and watching their little eyes bubble and melt, to biting off their little heads.

Easter approaches.

It's even more fun to just throw a Peep into the barbeque coals and watch till it vanishes into ash. There is no Peep left to eat at the end, of course, but it has always seemed to me that that was an advantage.

I actually thought it was some kind of cake device, possibly with raspberry sauce. I've never been a big potato-man to begin with, and frozen fries usually taste only marginally better than their packaging so I generally avoid the the frozen potato region of the local megamart.

Although I will say that whatever counter-service establishment to first create "our specially seasoned fries" by adding Old Bay deserves a freaking medal. That is awesome.

Torgo is a character in the movie "Manos, the Hands of Fate".

He is a... possibly retarded satyr-man who speaks in a stilted voice and guards an abandoned farmhouse for an immortal Satanist who mostly hibernates in the basement with his harem... because whenever the harem is awake, instead of awesome orgies, they argue over which lady is the leader of the harem. Torgo is jealous and figures he deserves one of those ladies, at least.

We only know he is possibly a satyr-man because, through his #####, his knees look all WEIRD.

After this movie was parodied on MST3K, they loved the character so much that he would occasionally recur in the host segments, being played by Mike Nelson, as though he had been fired by the Satanist and was now the world's most incompetent pizza delivery-man.

Mostly due to the fact of how slowly he talked.

It is a lot funnier when it isn't explained out like this. I'm pretty wacked out on sleep-aid, to be honest.

The deal with Torgo is that a lot of the character got mangled in post-production, and later in the MST3K cut. The actor actually built himself an elaborate set of satyr-leg prostheses, but Shadowrama presents you from seeing the feet in the MST3K version; also, apparently the original actor's performance was more or less destroyed by voice overdubbing in post-production of the film, so it's pretty much impossible to know now how he really did his character.

I know this because the Gentleman Caller is, er, a "Manos" aficionado.

I'm not proud.

Well, to be fair, though... Manos was shot silently to save money with the PLAN of dubbing in all the voices later. That is how naively conceived the entire project was. It was El Paso in the early Sixties and a fertilizer salesman thought it would be fun to do a drive-in cheapie flick independently... back when there wasn't "independent film" as we know it today or... more accurately, knew it in the late Eighties and early Nineties. That independent film hasn't existed in a decade, either. Different conversation.

Even in the non-MST version, though, which I own, the leg prostetics are really only clearly visible a couple of times.

And... the visual performance of Torgo is all facial-ticks and weird limping, overdub or no overdub.

A performance that could've been competent in a completely different movie but... not in what Manos ended up being.

In the context of Manos, it is completely fuck*ng hilarious. Manos is one of those rare movies where the non-MST version has more comedy replay value than the MST version. There is something added, in the fullness of its start-to-finish innocence, in watching it unspool as what is supposed to actually be a feature length movie.

Some of the higher-level absurdity is lost in seeing it broken up and framed, as opposed to an entire heartbreaking failure.
