Post by: MattFish on April 13, 2007, 01:16:48 am
an angel gets a plantar wart (http://www.achewood.com/index.php?date=04132007)

There's so many vaguely awesome lines. Other potential topic names include "She's so pretty, a dog barks!" and "well piss down a peppermint cane".

Oh, and AIM has a 16 character limit. I am now "EndOfTimesWigger".

Goddamnit. I hate the word wigger, my redneck boyfriend says it all the time and I always tell him to stop. Now I'll start giggling next time he says it and it will destroy my entire point.

That is why Philippe Times keeps it real all day every day 2 strong 2 long

Man, is there anything worse than forgetting the password?  I went to the bank a long time ago to set up online banking, and I've been trying to figure out the password for like six months!  Totally ruined the concept!

I love Philippe. Too classic. I love it how Philippe uses the spoilers-warning to notify people when the cusses begin and end, and then Beef just cusses up a storm at the end when he talks about laying Philippe's newspaper out in Quark Xpress or whatever he uses.

Call me closed-minded but... it is hard to reconcile, in my mind, "digging Achewood" and "dating a redneck".

Perhaps I only knew the most virulent strain of redneck in my youth, getting drunk on Coors Light and crashing ATVs into gravestones, getting drunk on Coors Light and screaming homophobic curses at people who aren't there, getting drunk on Coors Light and making things smell like Coors Light... and so on.

Perhaps there are rednecks who just sort of wear dusty denim and maybe mention NASCAR too often and other than that are Fine People. I am open to this idea. I just... haven't met them.

Where I grew up, we had the real Amish about 15 miles east of us. Not the cute tourist Amish who, like, run tours and sell butter and whatnot. Filthy paranoiacs who beat their women in public and allow their property to serve as safe havens for meth labs. Disgusting hateful shoeless freaks.

Whenever anyone would spend some time where I came from, they would always be surprised that there are other kinds of Amish who aren't... people in cute little costumes with cute little accents who make ice cream. There are Terrible Amish.

Perhaps it is the same way with rednecks. Perhaps I need to meet and befriend some Tourist Rednecks.

No offense to your guy, Rumjay, if you are dating him, he is probably rad.

But the disconnect is vast.

Actually a guy I who used to live in my apartment complex and still hangs around describes himself as a "redneck who loves all people". He is obviously a redneck; but loves George Clinton, has a black step mother and brother, hates racists, has loads of guns, drives a car with a wince, and spent the money his parents saved for his college education on cocaine (he has since stopped doing this-- this was at least 5 years ago).

He is cool to hang out with and get drunk, but his non offensive redneckdom is weird to me.  He is also in my crazy liberal religion class.

I hate the word wigger too.

The word wigger is terrible but I was mainly just confused because since it was beef I thought it was an ender's game reference somehow.

Also the Terrible Amish sound like they'd be cool folks to party with. All violent and hyped up on meth made with only the most primitive of equipment. All rocking out to religious banjo music.

Call me closed-minded but... it is hard to reconcile, in my mind, "digging Achewood" and "dating a redneck".

Well, there's a lot of disconnect in my life. I'm a weird lady.

Jason's not a redneck-y redneck. But, I'm not from the South, and he's got a pretty decent-sized accent, and his family has hell of Confederate flags (actually just three or four that I've seen, but still a lot too me) and he knows a little too much about wrestling (though he doesn't actively watch it), and he drinks a lot of beer and has seen Lynard Skynard in concert multiple times and loves Widespread Panic and he's a little homophobic and racist (though so am I, to be postmodern about it). But he knows nothing about NASCAR, is fairly well educated and capable of holding decent convos with me, and is still liberal (currently giggling at a Bush joke on Family Guy) and responded to my declaration of feminism on our second date with "That's cool!" and he's a HUGE hippie (has more pictures of Jerry Garcia than me in his room).

Redneck to me basically mean Southern. It's all in good fun though, because I LOVE Southerners and plan on staying down here forever.

I think that AIM needs to institute a policy where if you haven't logged on in over a year, your SN gets deleted. Because at this point, every SN I want is taken. I would be OK with this if they were in use, but I have added them to my buddy list-- no logins in the past 2 or 3 years for "theinevitable" or "the_inevitable"

If I ever incorporate a town out here in Arizona, I know damn well what I'm going to call it now.

A baby hoss is a foal.  Baby ponies just grow up to be... grown-up ponies.

I am iron_felix instead of ironfelix because that is my Last.fm account, which predates my TOUAMB account by about a month.  ironfelix (http://www.last.fm/user/ironfelix/) was already taken, by some dude with 39 tracks played and who apparently hasn't scrobbled anything in the last two years.  C'est la vie.

Also, re: "wigger."  In high school, my friends and I used the term "Whigga" in lieu of the N-word when writing lyrics for our colonial-themed rap group, the Liberty Boyz.  It was like this (http://achewood.com/index.php?date=01272003), only even more so.

That's my opinion on them, but I don't really think I have a monopoly on truth. It's a part of his heritage, and I'm not going to judge him. And you can't reduce the history of the South to one thing, I don't think. Postmodernism and such.

Being from the south, they bug me.

Being from the south, I can tell you that there are plenty (majority) of people that don't have them.

I was not trying to pass judgment or anything, just they really piss me off.  If a places tradition is racism, and you choose to celebrate it, does that make you a racist?  I think so.  The tradition argument might bug me more than the flag or racism.

relevant: no one displayed the confederate flag (which is not actually the flag of the Confederate States, but in fact the Battle Flag) until the 60s. The Civil War was not going on in the 60s. There was not a big revival of interest in heritage of the 60s (that I know of.)
Something else relevant was going on in the 60s, though.

I am about as anti Confederate flag as anyone can be, to be honest. It strikes me sort of like walking around in an SS uniform except that, y'know, there were never actually empowered Nazis here whereas, like, the Confederates ran half our country on the premise of racial superiority.

However.

What's worse than the Confederate flag is... people with a Confederate flag hanging outside their goddamn house in... central New York. Like Little Falls or Herkimer or St. Johnsville or something.

I just want to be all such as "I cannot explain how many levels this is wrong."

I want to play it as though we are comparing two slightly different pictures in the Sunday comics so as to assist a fox dressed up like Sherlock Holmes.

"Okay, first of all, Mr. Kaminski, you are Polish Catholic and Italian Catholic. The people behind the Confederacy would have hated you more than an escaped slave because at least an escaped slave worships the same Protestant God. Secondly, you are in Ilion, all right? Remember the one time you drove eight hours to go to Hershey Park? The closest the South got to here is like two hours south of THAT. Thirdly, YOUR FAMILY GOT HERE IN THE 1890s DECADES AFTER THE CIVIL WAR. Fourth, and I cannot stress this enough, YOU ARE WEARING A DONOVAN MACNABB JERSEY! If that flag had succeeded, the dude whose shirt you are wearing would be considered property like a chair or a cat. Do I need to go on?"

I... like... I at least get some dude in Georgia flying that flag. I don't agree with it but I at least get it.

But man. The saddest thing.

Another southerner here saying that the Confederate flag ain't fuck*ng cool.  I don't think it's really possible in this day and age to not know that the Conferate flag is a totally racist symbol.  So If you are into the Confederate flag it can basically mean only one of two things.  You are either straight up racist (fuck off and die asshole) or a dum-dum with their head buried waaaaay up their ass.  I'd say the latter is unlikely, but the dude is dating a woman that doesn't understand sarcasm who wants to be a cartoonist.  So I guess it's possible.

Not to derail this thread even further, but if the CSA was still around today, do you think they would still have slaves, or would they have emancipated them by now due to international and internal pressures?

Not to go on an even further tangent, but, and this is very important here, you should put the 19 in front of those 60s.  It could have been another 60's (18- civil war).

Overall though, great point.

That is a weird question.  I don't think they would still have slaves, but who knows.  There are certainly some people that claim to still want them I guess, but, well just wow.

Another semi relevant thing that I have posted in the past:  My teachers always got into this big deal about how slavery wasn't the cause of the civil war and that instead it was economy, social, and states rights issues.  I argued that these all came back to slavery.  I don't know where this is going anymore, but was anybody else taught this?  this is wrong, right?

my teacher, if I recall correctly, said that there were a variety of issues going into the war. But that the main one was basically that the southern states felt "ganged up on". Basically, the typical southerner wasn't incredibly "holy shit, I love slavery! I will fight to the death to defend it!" However, when the Yankees started telling them what to do... well... things got ugly.

I might be remembering this really incorrectly, though. I seem to recall kids in the class arguing with him, and him being basically all "I have a degree in American History, the fact that your dad says the Yankees "attacked us" does not mean shit."

My birthday is the anniversary of the beating of Charles Sumner in the senate. My mom asked if they could induce birth a few days early so that I could be born on the anniversary of this great event.

...not really.

See what I am saying is that the Yankees were saying that they could not have more slave states, or at least not more than there were free, etc.

I am not saying this is right, though, I am just wondering.

The question of "if the CSA had survived to the modern day, would it still have slavery legalized?" is an interesting one. The issue is that, basically, the reason that slavery was considered so indispensable to the South was that their farming systems required immense amounts of labor, and thus an immense labor pool that was cheap enough to still allow for profits. If you assume that agricultural development in this alternate universe followed the same course as it has in the real world, eventually the labor-intensiveness would abate, and slavery would no longer be an economic necessity. On the other hand, it not being necessary wouldn't mean it wouldn't remain in force...

The thing that really torques me about the Confederate flag -- and, to be honest, a whole lot of Southern-focused historical revisionism in this vein -- is that it's widely popularized by the lower classes, the same people who have suffered because of the South's massively ingrained economic inequality, and focuses so much on plantation glamour and the happy slave and other ways of romanticizing their own suffering. Yes, this is a natural human urge, but at the same time I want to take the whole thing by its metaphorical shoulders and shake it: "the 'Southern heritage' you're glorifying is that of inequality and oppression -- not just of African-Americans, but of poor whites! Of you, and your parents, and their parents, as far back as it goes! The plantations you fantasize about were built not just on the bonecrushing labor of the slaves, but on your ancestors' own spirit-destroying poverty! The 'states' rights' you wax poetic about were the rights of the states and their rich to grind your ancestors under their heel, and it was your ancestors' sons and brothers and fathers who died in droves for it! Don't glorify the plantation owners' cause -- they never gave a tin shit about yours!"

... I'll get my coat.

Yes, I have written multiple things about how the people who basically led a slaves life in terms of luxuries and work load helped to keep themselves there because of their feelings on African Americans.  That is not that uncommon as far as history goes though, sadly, and it could be argued that it is still happening (not the African American thing, but various reasons; there are always new reasons).

Such is the human condition.  I think Jough said it best in another thread:  Fuck Pride.  Pride in their race is what fucked these people over.

I have very little american history so I say this with no authority:
I could completely believe that the Slave stuff was just one of a variety of issues, and certainly not the 'real' issue (see war in iraq: and Freedom or WMDs vs. geopolitical power and assured energy supplies) but it was latched onto during the phase that Inev refers to when this sort of nonsense became popular again.
I wonder how messed up our worldviews become because parents give children simple explanations that they carry with them their whole lives and never bother to question.
Title: Re: April 13th, 2007: Miracle Slice, Tennessee
Post by: KeithHernandez on April 13, 2007, 09:41:53 am
What I am trying to say is that we learned like five main reasons, I don't remember them all anymore, but two of them were states rights and economy differences.  Well, it was states rights to own slaves and the economies were different because one had to industrialize, while the other relied on large numbers of slaves.  In this situation, slavery is still the issue.

I am trying to say that maybe this is revisionist history to make it seem less bad for us Southerners, which I guess I am.  I mean, I like certain aspects of the south, but besides geography I would probably not consider myself a Southerner.

I'd say the latter is unlikely, but the dude is dating a woman that doesn't understand sarcasm who wants to be a cartoonist.  So I guess it's possible.

....Okay. Had something up here earlier about how offended I was by that, but I'd rather not go down that road. Just. Okay.

I have already said clearly that I'm not into Confederate flags. My boyfriend isn't really, either. I wouldn't have them in my home, no matter how far South I am or how Southern my partner was, but I'm not going to go into someone else's home where I am a guest and judge them for a couple of things with flags on them. It's none of my business, and I'm not going to judge. I'm pretty committed to postmodernism and the idea that everything is up to interpretation. I don't think that my boyfriend's family is particularly virulently racist (they are generally liberal in their political views), so I'm just going to guess that they are aware of the interpretation of the flag as a racist symbol, and do not agree.

I don't really have complicated views on the flag: I don't like it, I interpret it as racism, but I try to understand other interpretations and not jump to conclusions about people. I do not have a monopoly on truth. If Jason's family were flying it high, I would probably feel differently, but they're not. They have a folded-up flag that's apparently from the Civil War and a mug and a shot glass with flags on them. In the scheme of thing, I don't automatically assume that they are horrifically racist and not something I want to be associated with. I disagree with their interpretation and conclude that yes, they are probably a little bit racist, but so am I, probably.

Now I'm going down to Asheville. I'll count the flags I see along the way.

I went to school with people who could trace their roots back to the Virginia colony and I also went to school with people from the north who really had a hard on for the south. I found that the northern born people embraced the flag as a symbol of what they wanted to be and the more established southerners embraced the "its been over a century - Get over it - we lost" attitude over the flag. Never did I see it used as a symbol of some kind of race ideology but more of a regional identity and a statement for states rights (which i believe is just as much an issue today).
Personally Im indifferent. Symbols have different meanings to different people. To each his own. I dont own one.

Southerners fly confederate flags because it gets people pissed off.

I dunno... there are some actual hate groups using the image, but it seems mostly a bunch of wanna be tough guys.  I kind of think of it like a watered down version of the Sex Pistols wearing swastika patches.  1) In England Nazis are first the dudes who bombed the shit out of London and second the dudes who killed all the jews and 2) the main point is the "holy shit you aren't doing that are you?" reaction not any political statement.

If you make a symbol or word off limits or impolite, then there's a certain personality (fark.com) that's going to be drawn to it for precisely that reason.  The Confederate Flag is a regionalist dead baby joke.  Haw haw look at their butts clench.

My home state, Kentucky, was a border state.  The western part of the state was pretty much confederate, the central part mixed, and the eastern, Appalachian part of the state for very pro-union.  I always find it highly ironic when some yahoo from up in the mountains spouts off about how the confederate flag on his truck represents his "Southern Heritage".  It's far more likely that his forebears fought for the Union and would have been highly offended by the stars and bars.  Morans.

I read a book called "Confederates in the Attic" which confirmed that... a lot of people in the south don't completely understand why the confederate flag is offensive. A surprising portion of people weren't exactly sure what the flag represented.

I do not understand this at all, but it was a pretty big survey.

I am a big fan, personally, of when people with Confederate Flags on their trucks call democrats unamerican.

It represents that the Duke boys kick ass.

Basically until I was in 7th grade I thought that the flag, the name "General Lee", and the song the horn played were all invented just for the show. I was sadly disappointed when I found out the actual origins of these things.

they actually had an interview with this family that, like... their car got shot at by these black fellows, and they had a confederate flag on it... and the interviewer had to explain to them why the black men called them "KKK motherfuckers."

I will find the relevant passage when I get home in 2 weeks. A lot of them seemed to see it as some sort of vague Southern Pride symbol. Isn't it just the Lynyrd Skynrd sign?
